Two Flavors of Classic SSL EQ in One 500 Series Module

Put legendary console equalization in your rack with the SSL 611EQ 500 Series 4-band EQ module. In fact, you actually get two legendary EQs in the 611EQ. Early ’80s SSL E Series consoles had the “Brown Knob” EQ, and later consoles used the “Black Knob” EQ, each with distinct sonic characteristics. The 611EQ lets you switch the midrange bands between these two flavors of EQ, so you’ll be equipped to shape any material to your liking. Add a preamp module and a dynamics processor, and you’ve got a superb custom SSL channel strip. Sweetwater’s advice: for an EQ you can rely on for virtually any task, look to the SSL 611EQ 500 Series EQ module.

Legendary SSL sound quality and vibe

Since the early ’80s, producers, engineers, and artists have revered SSL E Series consoles for their huge sound and distinctive character. A big part of the sound came from the E Series channel strip, and you get the same circuits in the 611EQ module.

“Brown Knob” EQ: the original SSL EQ, sweet and musical

Early SSL E Series consoles sported the “Brown Knob” EQ design (named for the color used on the LF section’s knobs). You get 15dB of cut/boost, and a special design that ensures the 3dB up/down points for each band fall at the same musical interval from the center frequency. Said another way, no matter where you cut or boost the 611EQ, the results sound natural and highly musical.

“Black Knob” EQ: a more aggressive EQ for modern styles

In the mid-’80s, SSL worked with the legendary George Martin to develop the 242 EQ circuit, or the “Black Knob” EQ to be found on later E Series consoles. It’s more aggressive than the “Brown Knob” EQ, with up to 18dB of cut or boost, and a different control circuit layout that gives you much tighter reign over low frequencies.

SSL 611EQ 500 Series EQ Module Features:

  • Mono 4-band parametric equalizer module with two distinct flavors of legendary SSL EQ
  • “Brown Knob” mode is the sound of early-’80s E Series consoles, with 15dB cut/boost and musical response
  • “Black Knob” mode is the sound of later E Series consoles, with 18dB of cut/boost and a tighter sound
  • LF and HF shelving bands can be switched to a bell-curve response for maximum versatility
  • The perfect way for project studios to get the sound of a world-famous console, affordably
  • Requires compatible 500 Series chassis

Great sounding EQ
I liked this EQ so much that I bought a second one to have a stereo pair. I've got many of the popular SSL 4000 E channelstrip plugins but wanted an outboard signal chain that sounded as good. This module delivers and as with all my hardware, sounds a bit better than plugins.

I analyzed the EQ curves and found when doing a low shelf boost, it adds a small dip right before it flattens out for the mids and highs. This immediately reminded me of the shape of Pultec curves when doing the popular cut/boost thing. It was a much smaller dip than a Pultec but it was the same idea. Plugin emulations should have that as well which makes it different from a surgical plugin like the standard low shelf in FabFilter and others. That dip means you're tightening the low while boosting it. The high shelf knob did the same thing in reverse, a small dip right before the high shelf boost. Very nice and is probably what defines the SSL EQ "sound". Nothing that I couldn't dial in with 2 bands on a surgical EQ plugin but it's nice to have it there in hardware while only needing to use one band. It's got a very low system noise floor so even drastic boosts in the top will only give you your track and not a bunch of hiss or hum along with it.

I've never used and tested a real SL 4000 E-series console so I don't know how authentic it is to its big brother but it does all I need and sounds great.

SSL 611EQ Review
Excellent product and effective on any track... like you'd expect anything less from SSL. After using their Plugins and others for years, the low end can be more controlled with this 500 series, than the plugins, which are especially good for high end sounds. Bottom line, SSL is a brand you can trust without exception, and this product is no different. Use it to better your tracks, use it in sound development, and you're results will not be second rate. Highly recommended.
