OS X behaves slightly differently than other operating systems when it comes to installing MIDI drivers and you’ll be doing yourself a big favor by following this procedure when you unpack your newly purchased USB MIDI controller.
- Always check the manufacturer’s website for the newest drivers and download them.
- Be sure that you DON’T connect the keyboard to the USB port. For OS X, it’s generally best to install the driver first and then connect the keyboard.
- If installed correctly the driver will appear in “Audio MIDI Setup” under the “MIDI Devices” tab even without the controller being connected. If the driver is not there, that probably means it didn’t install correctly. What you’ll want to do in this case is remove any residual files from the previous install attempt. They’ll be found on the hard drive under Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers (example: RDUSB0025Midi.plugin). Remove the folder you find there and then reinstall the driver without the keyboard connected. That should take care of it!
