We’re finding that many people like to install their own SIMM chips into computers, samplers, printers, etc. Often times this voids the manufacturer’s warranty, but if you decide to do so, here is a list of tips for avoiding chip damaging static electricity:
- Before installing, be sure that you are grounded with a ground strap attached to your wrist.
- Avoid movement (i.e. rubbing your feet on the carpet) that may generate static.
- Keep SIMMs in their protective packaging until they are installed. Don’t handle them unnecessarily.
- Avoid touching SIMM connectors; handle them by the edges only.
