A rest or silence with a duration that equals 1/8 of a whole note (assuming duple meter). In time signatures with an “8” denominator, the eighth rest represents a silence lasting for one beat in a measure. In both standard Western music notation and tablature, an eighth rest is represented by a black symbol somewhat resembling a stylized “7.”
