Unbelievable sound at an astonishingly low price!!

First, a quick word about Sweetwater, I've read tons of reviews about how great they are when it comes to customer service and support. However, I never had the chance to experience it first-hand until now. I have to tell you that Mitch, my sales rep, treated me as though I was buying a $15,000 recording rig...when all I was doing was buying a set of cheap headphones. Amazing!! Thank you Mitch! Sweetwater definitely lived up to the hype!

Okay...now let's talk about the headphones. I do graphic design and am in front of my computer all day long, and usually have Pandora playing in the background. I've been using earbuds for the longest time, but after a while, I find myself bothered by the "fingers in your ear" feeling that earbuds give. So I wanted a pair of headphones to trade off with periodically. I have two pairs of high-end Sony headphones I used to use for studio monitoring and recording, but they're in a box piled high out in the garage, and I didn't feel like going through tons of boxes to find them. Instead, I decided to just order a cheap pair online to get me by until I found the ambition to go find my others.

The reviews for these were surprisingly positive, and I thought "What the heck? Why not try them?" Basically the cost of a Venti Iced Mocha from "you-know-where". So I've had them for a few days now, and I'm keeping these things until they literally fall apart! When I first got the box they shipped in, I couldn't believe how light it was. It almost felt like nothing was inside....and that pretty accurately describes how light these things are!! You can barely feel them on your head at all. They fit me perfectly, even though they don't have rotating or swivel cups like my Sonys do. These, however, are MUCH more comfortable because they're so lightweight (the Sonys are very heavy). The HPM-1000's earpads are feathery soft, and although they're "over the ears", they are certainly not as large as AKG K240's for example. They're almost a hybrid of an on-ears and over-the-ears set, but extremely comfortable and I'm 6'4". They are perfectly snug against my head, allowing for a complete seal without being so tight as to cause pain like my most expensive set of Sony's. Those things (Sonys) are like vice grips, and can definitely cause fatigue after a while! These, however, are perfect for listening for hours and hours without hardly being aware that you even have them on!

Now let's talk about the sound. When I first put them on, and fired up some music, my first reaction was "Hmmm...too flat". The bass seemed slightly lacking, and the high end seemed muffled. DO NOT LET THAT SCARE YOU! PLEASE KEEP READING! I opened my trusty equalizer and boosted the low frequencies...along with tweaking the high end a bit. The typical "V" shape. Okay, cool...they now sounded better. And then, something interesting happened. After about two hours...I noticed that the bass had become a bit boomy, and the treble started sounding harsh. This could have been a result of the drivers breaking in and loosening up a little.

I turned off the EQ, and they are now PERFECT!!! The bass is prominent, but still very tight. I'm listening to some jazz right now as I type, and the stand-up bass is IDEAL!!! Sounds like you're sitting right next to the bass player in the best way. The drums are perfect with the cymbals and snare nice and crisp, and the toms and kick drum punchy and resonant. Horns sound like they're in my living room, and the vocals couldn't be any better! Everything is perfectly balanced, and these sound as good if not better than my Sonys which cost $250 ten years ago.

Yes, these headphones are made of plastic (hence the light weight). I imagine they'll last a long time, as long as you're careful with them (not too many drops, etc.) LOL!! The cord is the perfect length at 6 ft. If you're the slightest bit hesitant to buy these, don't be. I'm enjoying the heck out of mine!! And using them exclusively now (my earbuds haven't seen the light of day since I got these).

Hope this review helps! : )

Behringer HPM1000-BK

Excellent, for the price.

I burned them in a couple hours before listening. They sound a bit scooped to me. For music listening, easy to adapt to. For piano practice (using a Roland FA-08), usable but a bit muddy in the mids. I A/B checked them with AKG K240's, and they comparatively sound a little muffled. BUT - they are one-sixth the price! For an extra pair, or a pair in an exposed location (these will be in reach of the cat, who likes to snick cords), a very good value. These sound pretty close to a pair my wife bought that was about three times the price.

Since the ear cups don't rotate, fit will vary based on your head and ear shape. On me, they don't seal completely, so I get a little less bass.

The attached cord has an 1/8" plug, with a 1/4" adapter. The molded end behind the 1/8" plug is a bit thick, so it would not insert into my phone's audio jack unless I removed my phone case (in case that's an issue for you).

Overall, a good value, would buy again.

Crazy cheap and not bad

The oval shape is a nice fit for me. To me the low end seems a bit muddy although it is quite strong for a cheap set of cans. If you like the low end a little heavy these might be for you. Personally I prefer the sound from the HPS3000 and better still on the HC200. But get a pair and try them, keep 'em as a spare pair is what I'm going to do.

Sound quality is only “OK”… it lacks good highs.

Won't throw anyone under the bus for a $ pair of headphones… if you are looking for a low cost pair, then this is it! But, was a bit disappointed based on the brand name… that these have a roll-off at the high end… didn't measure it, by my ear thinks roll-off starts about 6-8khz… you loose much "room presence" at that and above… HOWEVER, they are fairly well constructed, these could probably be "abused" better than a pricier pair… and AGAIN, for $… they are FINE. Just manage your expectations at $… can't beat Sweetwater's sales guys - they are UNMATCHED ANYWHERE, so treat them nice!
