From POD to Helix

From the minute their kidney-bean-shaped POD hit the market at the end of the '90s, the ease at which guitarists were able to nail the classic tones of a wide variety of even more classic amplifiers changed the world of guitar forever. Plug in, pull up a tone you like, plug in some headphones, and you were rocking with the roaring tone of a cranked Marshall stack, the swampy goodness of a spring reverb-laden Fender Twin, or coaxing the famous chime of a Vox AC30. And you were doing it without having to keep a collection of amplifiers or deal with ear-pulverizing volume.

The POD also changed the way electric guitar was recorded. For the first time in history, you were able to record direct to your device without the need for a properly miked amplifier in a treated environment. It was this ability to achieve studio-quality tones on your desktop that helped launch the home recording revolution we all enjoy today.

The POD line has gone through massive evolution over the years. And it's this evolution that brings us to Helix, Helix LT, and Helix Native, all top-of-the-line amplifier and effects modeling products in the Line 6 canon. With extremely deep editing, pristine tone that goes toe to toe with any tube amplifier, and the ability to control your whole guitar rig, Helix is to the POD what the POD was to everything that came before.

Modeling Amplifiers

Players who needed Line 6's flexibility in a live environment immediately adopted modeling amplifiers for their performance. Even before POD, Line 6 had released a few of these well-received modeling guitar amplifiers. Like the POD, this Flextone line of amps offered guitarists a bevy of classic tones at the twist of a knob.

Line 6 then saw a need to bring these powerful tone machines to beginning guitarists and players looking for at-home practice solutions. They went to the drawing board and the ubiquitous Spider series was born. These budget-friendly modeling combo amps and heads harnessed the tonal flexibility and ease of use that had come to define Line 6. And because of their lower price tag, these amplifiers quickly became some of the best selling amplifiers in the world, while simultaneously blazing a trail for the vast array of modeling amplifiers that have emerged since.

Today, the Spider series continues to evolve in quality, tonal options, and sonic tools. You'll find app-based editing, USB recording, onboard looping, and much more waiting in these value-packed amps. Though they achieve budget-status price tags, the Line 6 Spider line would be a welcome addition to any player's rig.

Legendary Effects Pedals

Line 6 has even been able to notch a few popular stompboxes along the way. By cramming their powerful modeling technology into these pedalboard-friendly designs, they've crafted delays, overdrives, modulation, and multi-effects units that are considered classics.

No Line 6 pedal - or any other delay - may be as legendary as the green monster known as the DL4 Delay Stompbox Modeling Pedal. This super pedal's ability to access multiple great-sounding presets on the fly as well as utilize a genre-defining looper function found it placed on thousands of pedalboards throughout the world. In fact, every popular mega delay in production today owes a debt to the DL4 and it's pioneering design.

And you can't discuss Line 6's contributions to the pedal community without mentioning their M5, M-9, and M-13 multi-effects processors. These three devices are possibly the first multi-effects pedalboards to ever be widely adopted by professional touring musicians as well as veteran studio musicians. By focusing on detailed models of a huge variety of famous effects pedals, such as the Phase 90 phaser, Tube Screamer overdrive, Dyna Comp compressor, and hundreds more, the M series are still one of the go-to solutions for players who need a massive array of tones in an easy to transport rig.

The Future of Line 6

Line 6 continues to push technological boundaries every day. From their line of digital wireless guitar and microphone products, their highly tuneable PA equipment, instruments that are able to model a whole collection of guitars with stunning accuracy, and their work in DAW-based plug-ins, the company shows no sign of slowing down.

Every few years it seems that Line 6 have released a product that completely changes the way we interact with music. The original PODs, the Spider series of modeling amplifiers, the DL4 that launched a pedal revolution, and their iconic Variax line of guitars all back that up. So what will be the next game changer from this digital pioneer? Who knows? We just know that everyone here at Sweetwater can't wait to find out.
