My favorite mic in the world
I use this for acoustic instruments and my drum room, this is one of those mics that sounds better than what your ears hear in real life. Everything has a very sweet sound that is intimate and ridiculously clear. It captures all the good and almost none of the bad. This mic literally is better than what it sounds like in your ears live in the room. Incredible.

Amazingly easy to sound amazing!
I've used this mic for over 20 years as a main "stage mic" in the recording of acoustic concerts and small live shows. It is absolutely true what another reviewer said, that this mic hears sound better than your ears do. It works so well on strings, whether it's a full size orchestra positioned high above the conductor, or a small chamber ensemble only 4 feet away. I am always amazed at how this mic sounds.

It's also an excellent drum overhead mic for things like jazz, or a room mic for more harder hitting rock drums.

I've used it in the piano as well, to get fast, easy, and phase coherent sound without the hassle.

It sounds good on acoustic guitar too, but I've found the position is very critical, as the left channel can very easily pick up the boominess of the sound hole. Because of this, I've found better luck mic'ing an acoustic a more traditional way up close with a spaced pair, and the VP88 back a few feet to get a more roomier overall sound. I find this can really glue a sound together.

This mic is one of my secret weapons. Don't spread the secret around to too many people…

Looks great
This mic has worked for years for me and I am sure the new one will do the same. It has not been one that got to work every night or every month but when it came out it did what was needed. I know the new one will do the same.

Beautiful Microphone
I go to a recording school and we recently got this microphone. I have been using it as an acoustic microphone and it is absolutely fantastic. It give a very warm, accurate sound that makes the guitar sound fantastic. It has very quickly become my go to microphone for acoustic MS recording.
Music background: Student Recording Engineer and Live Solo Musician.
Highly Underrated Microphone
I have used this microphone from drum overheads to stereo location recording and I cannot think of another microphone I would rather have to do the job. Used on an acoustic guitar, it's like taking blinders off. Even the Shure representative was surprised I used it on an acoustic guitar. You truly hear the entire instrument. This is definitely a "desert island" microphone.

The VP88 is one of the most unique microphones I've ever encountered. The M/S encoding function is breathtaking and you can simply dial in the stereo width right there on the mic. As a studio recording engineer, I was excited to get my hands on one of these; as a sound designer, I'm impressed beyond measure.
