Excellent Variable Pattern Mic for Studio Recording!

The Neumann U 89 studio microphone presents improved acoustical and electrical characteristics and better high end response when compared to the U 87A. The U 89 has a dynamic range of 123dB, five polar patterns, a 6dB pad, and a 2 position LF roll-off switch. The U 89 also has little or no off-axis coloration.

Famous for broadcast use, the Neumann U 89 is recommended as a general orchestral microphone and for narration and vocals. All of the Neumann U 89's high impedance components are protected against contamination, making the U 89 highly reliable and stable over long periods of operation.

Reviews

Fantastic microphone.
Bought a U89i in 1990 and I have never needed another condenser. It does everything.

Best vocal mic I’ve heard
Two of my fellow producers told me that their go to vocal mic is the U89 over the U87 and many other high end mics. I didn't believe it knowing the popularity of the U87. However, after some research I saw that the U89 was meant to be an improvement of the U87 but somehow didn't receive the marketing and attention it deserved. Again I was skeptical until I did a shootout myself - on 2 seperate occasions.

I've personally used the Sony C800-G, U87, U67, Lauten Atlantis and more.

The shootout was U87 v U89 v TLM103 v Lauten Atlantis

The U89 was the clear winner by far - beautifully low mids especially. No harshness or push in any frequencies like the u87, just a perfect clear and rounded representation of the vocalist.

Second was U87, then TLM, then Lauten.

I've now upgraded to the U89. Couldn't be happier.

Amazing Microphone
I have had a U89 since 1984 when I bought my first one. There is nothing this mic can't do except sound bad. It has a very flat frequency response. I have used it extensively recording acoustic guitars and vocals. I have an acoustic that sounds thin with every other mic I have tried on it. This one makes it sound huge. The U89 takes EQ very well without sounding harsh. A great addition to any mic locker.

Best mic I’ve ever owned
I"ve had a wide range of high end mics from vintage Neumann"s to modern Ribbons by Royer and AEA and this mic takes the cake. Like most people I was well aware of the u87 and u67 but never really heard of the u89 until I did an orchestral session in a studio packed full of these mics. I was astonished. I had to get my hands on one and when I did I was equally blown away. I had been struggling for over a year to get the piano sound I wanted out of my baby grand. I tried everything from classic 414s to km84s to Ribbons and I was always disappointed. I figured it must just be the room. Then, when I put up a pair of u89s I instantly got that sound I had been looking for. These mics are amazing. They seem to just work in any room and on any instrument and sound great. If you can afford one of these mics and are on the fence get one.

A must have for the price!!!!
I bought this mic used, but wanted to post a review on sweetwater since I normally order from them. This mic sounds amazingly clear and even if you use it in a room with piss poor acoustics this thing filters the echo right out of the room. I still have to do minor 2db editing to fix level issues, but it's very minor, especially when compared to the cheap shure ksm27 mic i was using before the U89. The difference between the two mics was not even funny once I compared them. The clarity you'll hear when you use the polar pattern filters is top of the line on the U89. It almost sounds already E.Q.'d before I even begin mastering the track. I still suggest using a mastering E.Q. with it though, in order to get that real big studio sound everyone's looking for. I would recommend this mic to anyone looking for that big studio sound at an affordable price. It'll make you sound good even when your not performing at your best. No other brand comes even close to neumann when it comes to microphones. It's just that simple.
