Finally On The Bandwagon

I've owned this rig along with the Kabinet for well over a year. When it first arrived, I found a few amp profiles I liked, added some of the Kemper stomps and rehearsed it a few times. I thought I had it dialed in enough and attempted to gig with it. After hearing it at that gig's sound check, I panicked and called a buddy to bring me an amp. When we got back to our rehearsal space, I placed the Kemper rig in the corner and there it sat until recently.

My tube amp collection has ballooned over the decades so I decided to finally profile some of my amps. I followed the profiling instructions to a T and was generally very happy with the results we got from my Two Rocks, Fuchs, Fenders, Marshalls, Friedmans, Magnatones, etc.,

After playing back some of my amps, it was then that I understood what I was working with. I needed to treat the Kemper like a real amp and not a modeler. I put my pedal board in front of it and left all the Kemper modeled effects out of it. I quit trying to dial in other people's amp profiles and used only my amps.

The difference was night and day. The Kemper really does respond closely to my real amps. But the best part is that it captures a somewhat idealized, best version of the profiled amp. When you're dealing with all the variables of real tube amps in gig situations - line / wall voltage, tube conditions, warm up time, etc., - this is a godsend. The Kemper is in the sweet-spot as soon as you turn it on.

In hindsight, I was treating the Kemper like I would treat a modeler and calling up what was obviously someone else's version of a Fender 6L6 or Marshall EL34 type amp and twisting knobs or adding effects trying to find my interpretation of the ideal version of that certain amp. That's not what this is. This really is a snapshot of an amp in a certain state - and when I stopped trying to make major adjustments like I would on a modeler, to clean it up or make it dirtier, it finally started working for me.

Will it replace my real amps? Probably not. But it will definitely get used in situations where having a few different basic, starter tones are needed. Where it goes from there will depend on what Kemper develops next and, of course, my expertise at using this thing. If you're on the fence about buying one, there are certainly enough profiles out there that you'll likely find a few that are perfect for you. But the real treat is profiling your favorite amp and building on that.

One tip while profiling. I use an AmpRX Brown Box voltage regulator on my amps. If you're not familiar, I highly recommend checking it out. Sweetwater sells them. I think they make a difference in the final profile's tone. They definitely help my amps sound better.
