Crazy good mic- get 5 of them!
Allow me to let you in on one of the best kept secrets in the studio... these mics punch way above their price! If you know, you know... if you don't know- let me tell you:

These are truly incredible microphones, regardless of price! I have much more expensive small condensers at my disposal, but these are always the first pair that I reach for unless i need a bright/ hyped sound. I will probably get another pair soon because I am loving these on snare bottom, hi hats, ride, overheads, AND as coincident room mics for drums. In mono, they are detailed, pretty flat/not hyped, and more versatile than most other small condensers I've used. In stereo (like a coincident pair) they present a really nice center image (bass), and the sides don't feel artificial or hyped. Other small condensers have too little information on the sides or they don't center the kick (low end) as well as I would like.

I recently did a shootout on acoustic guitar and the P 170 beat a KM184, KSM137, SM81, and AT4021!! If AKG doubled the price of these microphones, they would still be a crazy bargain.

The sound is pretty flat- typical for a small condenser. They don't hype things up, but they also don't beef things up. They give you an honest capture of your source, and they can handle very high SPL. I find them most useful for close miking drums, but that being said, the majority of my sessions are drums. I kinda wish there was a -10db pad as well as the -20db pad, but thats a super minor gripe and I've gotten by just fine without it!

I'm really digging these on snare bottom- give it a try instead of a 414....

Worth well more than its price
On the recommendation of a well-known record producer, I picked up a P170 for recording hi hats - and boy, was he right! Very clear and clean, maintains the pitch and clarity extremely well.

Great mic's
I use these mic's in my studio. I have a hybrid drum kit (e-drums, but use Acoustic cymbals). I have the hi hats, two crash cymbals and ride cymbal mic'd with the P170s and they work like a charm and provide crisp clear sound. I do have each one on its own channel on the sound board. Love these mics.
AKG 170
Surprising little Condenser Mic acoustic or electric guitars shine, I play through my little El Dorado Teisco amp what a combo,

Thanks Sweetwater
