A Superb 88-key Controller from Studiologic

Over the years, Studiologic has earned a sterling reputation for their high-quality Fatar keyboard actions. Now the company extends that legacy with the SL88 Grand, a superb 88-note MIDI controller keyboard featuring Fatar's latest fully weighted keybed technology. You'll delight to the touch of the TP/40WOOD Graded Hammer Action with Ivory Touch, which delivers the authentic feel of an acoustic grand piano. You will also appreciate the quick setup and navigation afforded by the SL88 Grand's intuitive user interface, as well as enhanced performance, DAW, and plug-in control via three X/Y stick controllers. If you're a serious pianist who needs a portable 88-key weighted controller for stage and studio, the Studiologic SL88 Grand should be on your short list.

Studiologic SL88 Grand at a Glance:
  • The unmistakable feel of a concert grand piano
  • The ideal gigging controller
  • TFT color display for total access
  • X/Y stick controllers for real-time control
The unmistakable feel of a concert grand piano

The Studiologic SL88 Grand uses Fatar's top-of-the-line TP/40WOOD Graded Hammer Action with Ivory Touch and wooden white keys to give you the natural expressiveness and playing feel of a perfectly balanced grand piano. For superior performance, every key provides three contacts to accurately convey all the nuance of your performance. From delicate pianissimo to bombastic fortissimo, these keys translate every minute detail of your playing in a truly inspiring way.

The ideal gigging controller

It may sport a fully weighted 88-note keyboard, but the Studiologic SL88 Grand is quite portable, weighing in under 46 pounds - which is very much appreciated by gigging Sweetwater keyboardists. The SL88 Grand is also thoroughly professional caliber and built like a tank with a rugged all-metal casing and impact-resistant synthetic endcaps that protect the keybed and provide a sure grip when transporting.

TFT color display for total access

The Studiologic SL88 Grand features a bright, easy-to-view TFT color display that, in conjunction with a high-quality 6-way controller knob, lets you quickly and easily navigate through all SL88 Grand functions - a very intuitive setup. Three push buttons to the right of the control knob bring you back to the top level from any location in the system with just a single press.

X/Y stick controllers for real-time control

Studiologic spec'd the SL88 Grand with three X/Y stick controllers for expressive performance and direct manipulation of sound parameters. Stick 1 (which you'll typically use for pitch and modulation control) is spring-loaded in both X/Y axes. Stick 2 is spring-loaded in the X axis only. Stick 3 is free in both the X and Y axes, which is perfect for crossfades, pans, and parameter control.

  • 88-note TP/40WOOD Graded Hammer Action with Ivory Touch and wooden white keys

Best keyboard I've ever owned.

This is, without a doubt, the best keyboard I've ever owned, or layed hands on. It is replacing my Fatar Studio 90 which recently died. It controls a Yamaha TG77, a Yamaha MO6 and is connected via MIDI on an Eleven Rack into our studio PC where it controls virtual instruments and MIDI and virtual instruments in Pro Tools. It feels amazing. I could not stop playing for over 2 hours after it got set up here. I'm looking forward to getting a long enough USB cable to hook it up to our PC and use its software control panel in the near future. Thanks again to Jon for amazing support.

Love the Action

I had to upgrade from the terrible Arturia Keylab88 since the action on it was horrendous. The SL88 Grand is quite heavy all around but I don’t mind since it sits at the center of my music production studio.

The only thing I’m not completely sold on is the 3 small joysticks for the controllers. They’re all assignable you whatever you need but they appear to be a little fragile. Not sure how well they would hold up if they were accidentally bumped or tweaked.

I bought a couple magnetic computer/accessory trays and you don’t really need to screw in the brackets unless you think it might tilt with heavier accessories. If you do use the brackets you’re stuck placing them in only certain locations because you have to line up the brackets with the existing screws on the back in the slot. I’m just using it with the magnets so I can position them exactly where I need them.

I would prefer to have the single knob NOT in the middle of the keyboard because I like to have my wireless MAC keyboard there for easy access. But I’m using it just to the left. It does cover the display but it really doesn’t matter since you can configure your controls thru the desktop app anyway.

The action is smooth and seems to register more realistic velocity reading for piano playing. You can literally play super soft passages and full on loud. It’s very quiet especially compared to the Keylab88.

This is definitely a quality board with helpful features and software configuration via your computer. So far I’m very happy with this upgrade.

Musicality

Though I feel confident that all of us have thoroughly enjoyed any review by Jacob Dupre, this one stands out because of the uplifting composition that he shares at the end. Long live the music…

Solid Action Avoids Triggering Mistakes

Okay, I am not a serious piano player, but I have had an opportunity to play Steinways and high-end Yamahas. I wanted to replace my small midi controller with something that I could use to trigger various VST's that would help me avoid inadvertant triggers caused by my heavy-handed clumsiness. This keyboard is my solution. The action is much firmer than the typical plastic, spring-action keyboards and certainly cannot be mistaken for a cheap toy. I use it only in my home studio, as I no longer do anything on stage (that was only from the 60's through the 80's). We used to lug a Hammond B3 organ with a Leslie speaker to gigs, and while this is much less awkward, it is still heavy enough that I wouldn't want to drag it around.

I have read a lot of negative comments about the action being too heavy, but that is purely a matter of preference. I would recommend this to anyone willing to put in the work to get used to this more realistic piano action, otherwise you would be better to stick to something not weighted or less weighted.

I used it straight out of the box and have not done any reprogramming. It worked great, but remember, I am only using it as a midi controller and not exploring any of the many other features.
