Big, Full Sound for Amps and Percussion

Larger than the ND44 but similar in application, the Electro-Voice ND46 large-diaphragm dynamic mic has a complex voice and extended low range that excels at close-miking guitar amps, bass cabs, strings, and percussion. The round bottom end is great when you need big bass without boominess - like a cajon or cello - while the top end is exceptionally articulate for a dynamic mic to keep transients from getting lost in a mix. A push-to-lock pivot mount makes positioning the ND46 in front of a speaker or on a floor tom a breeze. And side and rear vents give this mic a tight supercardioid pickup pattern to reject room noise - which the engineers at Sweetwater find is great for loud stages and untreated recording environments. Finally, an internal shockmount helps to prevent sympathetic vibrations from eating up your headroom.

The Electro-Voice ND series picks up where N/DYM left off

For years, EV's N/DYM series of live and studio dynamic microphones have been a beacon of hope to us low-enders and live-sounders. And now Electro-Voice promises to deliver even better performance with its EV ND collection. This line includes eight new vocal, drum, amp, and instrument mics to cover a wide range of stage and studio needs. Beneath the dent-resistant Memraflex grilles are redesigned large-diaphragm capsules with humbucking coils and internal shockmounts to capture a rich, musical sound with low noise - all on a budget. When you need dependable performance on a workingman's income, Sweetwater sound professionals encourage you to check out Electro-Voice ND microphones.

Electro-Voice ND46 Amp/Instrument Microphone Features:
  • Large-diaphragm dynamic mic with powerful bass and controlled mids
  • Great for guitar/bass amps, rotary speakers, cello, cajon, and floor toms
  • Locking pivot mount helps for precision-miking drums and guitar cabs

Reviews

Easy Articulated head Design
So this mic we shot out against its little brother the ND44. While I felt that this mic didn't have the bottom end the 44 had, this mic still sounds great on rack toms. In comparison to the Austrian Audio OD5, this just blows it out of the water at almost half the price. The curve on this mic is just perfect for percussion. I could see it working for other instruments as well, but its doing such a good job where its at on my congas, (replacing my RE20 for the job) I doubt I'll be using it for much else any time soon.
Great vocal mic
I took a gamble on this as a vocal mic and wasn't disappointed. If you want a mounted vocal mic that doesn't require the real estate of an RE-20 or SM7, check this out. Clear, clean and unassuming.
EV ND46 - A new favourite
This mic replaces EV's N/D-468 which in turn was the new model of the 408. I've been using the ND46 in the same applications, toms, brass, bass drum for jazz drum kits and general percussion and it's been excellent on all of them. Also very good for voice-overs and commentary so long as you use it off-axis. I had my doubts, I think just because it's cheap! But it's truly a worthy successor. It's a dynamic mic with a large yet light diaphragm, so the large diameter has rich lows with "body" yet the lightness retains transients and highs for excellent detail. I think it may have just slight more HF than the old 408's but that's fine. It's very durable with a solid feel and should last longer than the old model. It's actually larger but the design allows flexible mounting options. The 408 was the only dynamic I would use for something like a choir in a concert hall thanks to the smooth highs, and being supercardioid and dynamic it was less prone to feedback at high gain in that application. I haven't tested the ND46 for feedback but its tone and response are certainly suitable for that. This is a very impressive mic and on tom toms for rock it's a total secret weapon; my toms sound has great LF and body with terrific clarity and is honestly my favourite for that role in 30+ years of live mixing. For the price, performance, quality and durability I genuinely cannot find any reason to give less than five stars; it's actually that good. On the first couple of gigs it was obvious I'd be using it all the time from now on. Doesn't suit everything (I prefer others for guitar, vox, certain others) but it's a go-to for a lot of stuff now
Music background: Live concert and club mixer, PA/audio/production technician
Mic Your Guitar Amp!
A fantastic full sounding mic on a guitar amp. I bought this knowing if it didn't compete well on an amp, it'd be great on floor tom. Now I need another for floor tom, and maybe a 3rd for snare (the other guitar player in my band bought one too).
Great mic
This sounds as good as any studio mic I ever used to mic an amp. Just solid, simple, good fidelity.
Music background: Professional musician for 20 years.
