A Modern Mic Preamp with Vintage Sound!

The MP-2NV is a Great River Electronics preamplifier that takes the classic circuitry and vintage sound of the 1073 module to a new level of modern sonic fidelity. Accuracy, transparency, and vintage "tuning" amplify this design goal. The circuitry allows for brilliant transformer saturation or the soft distortions of a single-ended amplifier. Extreme pushing of the unit will augment the sound of electric guitars, sound modules, and drums to add vitality, presence, and real punch.

Vintage Sound

The Great River MP-2NV features iron in the signal path for that big vintage sound. Its no-latency output monitoring provides a buffered sound feed to your DAW workstation. The MP-2NV's hi-Z input is ideal to shape the sound for bass, electric guitar, and sound modules. Dual metering provides visual monitoring of gain staging. The ultra-quiet noise floor delivers "stealth" performance for rich, textured vocal sounds. Finally, you'll hear an enhanced stereo image when using both channels of the MP-2NV.

Great River Electronics MP-2NV Preamplifier Features:
  • XLR balanced in and out connections
  • 1/4" -10dbV output for 'no-latency' DAW monitoring
  • hi-Z input on front panel
  • Adjustable gain in 5db steps to 60db
  • Output gain from -25 to +10db; maximum overall gain 70db
  • Input and output monitor meters on each channel
  • 2 or 3 stages of single ended solid-state amplifier gain blocks
  • Gold plated switching contacts
  • Front panel polarity, phantom power, input impedance, and output loading switches
  • High quality, custom wound Sowter transformers
  • Output transistor and transformer with heavy 70ma Class A bias

Reviews

Solid piece of gear
Great preamp! Definitely overkill for home studios but does have a nice vintage sound.
In hindsight I'd recommend saving some money and going with the 1nv, which is the single channel (half price) version.

Make sure you have a nice interface with quality ad/da conversion BEFORE looking at preamps, or you wont even hear the difference! (Pictured on my setup is the babyface pro fs. Definitely should've been my first purchase)
Full time
Previously, I owned an API 512C pre amp, and a distressor and that was my vocal chain. I added this Great River pre amp, and tested it against the ultra clean API. The Great River added a grit and some color that made the vocals better. It's just a great vocal sound - and I never take it out of my signal chain. Every vocalist that records in my studio is run through this thing. Yes, with varying levels of gain depending on style and vocalist volume, but it flat works on every recording. I don't think I've used the API on a vocalist since buying this. I know it's impossible to describe but I'll try: Some slight distortion that is extremely desirable and smooth on a voice.
Winner !!!
Truly an amazing piece of gear ! This pre sees a lot of action in our studio and it's well deserved. The character ranges from fairly clean to quite aggressive! Turning up the input gain and dimming the output trim will yield the most colored sounds from the unit and vice versa. The tone of the amp is VERY powerful, punchy and solid. You can't go wrong with this one !
Worth every penny
This pre is acoustically beautiful. It's really easy to quickly dial in the amount of saturation desired given the fact that it has input and output gain controls AND input/output meters. Want that classic nicely saturated iron transformer thick bass sound? Look no further! Plug in to the DI and be very happy (OK the bass/player matter some too..). The loading control is interesting - subtle, but there. Works great for overheads too! If only it had a line in - I keep wanting to reamp through it.

Great Preamp
This preamp is a studio workhorse. It is one of the best general purpose preamps out there. Sonically it's fairly clean, but the tone is variable because there are separate knobs for input and output levels in addition to a button that switches the impedance. Also the DIs are fantastic for synths/basses/guitars and have rock-solid low end.
