Boutique Tone in a compact 2x12

I've been down the boutique amp "rabbit hole" starting 2008 with my first Carr Hammerhead, Dr Z Z-28, then a 65 Amps Stone Pony (of which I sold 2 amps to get) A pleasure to own all but sold them off as my needs have changed to a clean platform. This Fender ML is very special, produces clean tones like a classic Fender should and having dual clean channels is genius..This is a sleeper amp, a bit heavy but compact for a 2x12, it's all you'll ever need as you'll likely be mic'd anyway. Well designed and put together, it handles all pedals well (modulation, clean boosts alike) cannot say enough good things about this amp which rivals many boutique offerings, this one is a keeper.

The ML Hotrod Deville is an Amp for Real Musicians

Full disclosure: Before we begin I am demanding and hypercritical about my musical equipment and will only accept the best available on the market, so my praise, extolling the virtues of the ML HotRod Deville is not lightly given. After almost a half century of experience that includes building, repairing and customizing guitars and amplifiers I speak from the authority of vast experience.

If you are a musician who uses pedals and processors to accent your sound, rather than disguise poor musicianship, searching for the holy grail of clean tube amps with sweet tones that has great break-up and overdrive at any volume that sounds absolutely fantastic plugging a cable directly from the guitar into the amp without any pedals or processors, your search for an amp about as close to the holy grail of sonic perfection possible without buying a far higher priced, high-performance boutique amp, your search is over.

The first ML Hotrod Deville I purchased had some issues with static interference, damage likely caused by careless Fedex Shipping. However, aside from the interference, the tone was superb so I returned the amp for a replacement. So far the replacement is far better, in fact, I will say, the ML Deville is one of the 3 best amps I have ever owned, the first being a 1980's Fender Twin Reverb and the other being my Roland Jazz chorus 40 Which sounds far better than the JC 120 I returned.

I have owned and played through many great amps through almost a half century playing guitar for the sake of comparison, I will concentrate on guitar amps, as I play bass as well and have a world class bass rig.

Over the Years I have played through a British Made Marshall Major 200 watts, with 2-100 watt bottoms, owned a 1960's 100 watt Ampeg, a 1980's Fender Twin Reverb, Fender Tonemaster Twin and Roland Jazz Chorus 120 both of which I returned because they were nowhere near as good as advertised a 50, watt Marshall, Fender Hotrod Deluxe, a Roland Jazz Chorus 40 which is infinitely superior to the 120 I bought and returned.

My only real complaint about the ML Deville is the weight. While the stock Celestion speakers are absolutely fantastic, I will probably change the speakers with high output neodymium magnet speakers, simply because they are significantly lighter. Again, I am completely satisfied with the sound quality of the stock speakers. Which leave nothing to be desired.

My favorite amp I owned before I bought the the Michael Landau Hot Rod Deville and Roland JC40, was my Fender Twin Reverb. While the Twin was a beast that screamed at low volumes, was relatively clean with good break-up, it also had an annoying high pitched background noise and was so loud, with the volume set at 2, I felt I was going deaf.

Once a former friend of mine who had resuscitated Buddy Miles career before he died (Drummer on Hendrix's Band of Gypsys) called me up to ask if he could borrow my amp for a gig at a bar around the corner from where I lived. While Buddy was not as widely known as a guitar player as a drummer, he had been playing guitar from before his time in Band Of Gypsys and claimed to have taught Jimi some licks and techniques, which I don't doubt because when he was on, he was really good and sounded like Hendrix.

Having seen Buddy play several times, I knew he could run the gamut from soaring brilliance to waffling confusion in a single song. However the real point is that he loved the Twin Reverb so much, the day after borrowing mine for the gig he bought one.

The Fender Twin has 25 more watts than the Michael Landau which is the equivalent of about 3db louder, which while audible is insignificant because the ML Deville is screaming loud if you turn up the volume. I bought a JHS little black box that serves as an attenuator, so the ML Deville sounds great at low "apartment" volumes and I can always turn the volume down on the guitar while turning the drive up which is unnecessary because I prefer crystal clear and clean.

Over all, for me since I am more interested in clean tones, the Michael Landau is a better amp than the Twin Reverb because it is beautifully, exquisitely clean with a warm and full bodied tone that is clear as a crystal bell. I Love this amp and Would buy it again and recommend it to anyone interested in one of the best production tube amps ever made.

The Hot Rod Deville

I believe this amp is better than advertised! Nice cleans and Smooth over drive nothing like my old HR deVille. I'm seriously considering buying a second one to run stereo.
Music background: Playing guitar professionally since 13 years old and I am 69 now do the math.

Best Tube Amp For The Price

This amp has all the classic Fender sound you want. Nice cleans, nice tube break up and amazing reverb. Takes pedal very well and has an effects loop if you prefer post effects. Only thing I would have to say is that 60 Tube Watts is VERY LOUD. Its awesome and if you leave the volumes around 2 its totally quite enough. Tons of clean head room for players looking for a clean sound that is loud without break up. Totally recommend this amp. The speaker upgrades are also a huge plus.

My Last Amp...lol...

This is probably the finest amp i have ever played...Its loud..its sparkly and its clean all the way to 12..Will i buy another amp...Im sure i will..But this along with my princeton reverb is the top of the heap..The JHS little black amp box will tame the volume or you could plug into input 2 since it has a pad..or just change a preamp tube for something a little less hotter...It is the perfect pedal platform and the reverb is right out of the 60's..The Celestion v type speakers are great..They are also loaded in my Blackstar artist 30..A great amp in its own right..Everything about this amp great...Its a keeper!!
