Four Mic Pre Sounds in OneCovering the range from classic 1073-style vintage tone to ultra-clean modern sparkle, the Slate Pro Audio Fox QuadTone 2-channel microphone preamplifier is one of the most versatile mic pres out there. The way the Fox shapes tone is brilliant. There are two completely independent microphone preamplifier circuits in each of the Fox's channels. The Vintage circuit calls up the sound of the legendary 1073-style preamp - warm, fat, and full of lush harmonics. Conversely, the Modern setting gives you a sparkling clean sound that's perfect for capturing acoustic instruments in picture-perfect detail. What's more, the Fox QuadTone features two Combo modes, which combine the input and the output sections of both circuits, giving you a pair of completely unique preamp sounds.

I recorded slide gtr through an Orange Tiny Terror using mid-side mics, an FET condenser for mid into the Fox vintage normal, and an active ribbon for side into the Fox modern combo and cranked the input to about the 4th detent and output at unity (wide open). I gotta say the results are STUNNING !
The Fox on drum overheads (and on anything else) is a joyous event. That is if you like your your tracks to behave in a fashion where they need little or no further treatment. close [-]

The Slate Pro Audio Fox is a brilliant idea that has been really well executed. Not just one or two, but FOUR very distinct (and very usable) microphone preamp 'colors' to choose from on each of the two independant channels of this unit. Ranging from the pristine clean sound that reminds me of Grace or Millenia preamps, to the fat warm sounds of a Neve front-end, with two extra variations that combine these two characteristics in different order. Instrument inputs on the front panel complete the well thought out facilities on this twin mic pre. I'm not sure why no one else has thought of this before, but Slate Pro Audio have got a winner with the Fox!
