50th anniversary Though Gibson's Flying V is an immediately recognizable, sought-after instrument that graces stages and studios worldwide these days, it wasn't always such a popular design. In fact, when the V first left the drawing board in 1958, many in the guitar world dismissed its "futuristic" design as gimmicky and inefficient. The line was discontinued in '59, but luckily for us, Gibson revived the Flying V in 1967. The guitar was championed by artists from diverse musical backgrounds, and the V has been flying ever since (especially in heavy metal circles).
