Yamaha's Next-gen DGX Portable Grand

Yamaha takes their acclaimed DGX series to the next level with the DGX-670 portable grand. If you want Yamaha tone and touch in a feature-packed 88-key digital piano, Sweetwater has your ideal instrument. The Yamaha DGX-670 gives you the natural feel of Yamaha's GHS weighted action — heavier in the bass, lighter in the treble range — that incorporates matte black keys to absorb moisture for a supremely comfortable playing experience. Sonically, the DGX-670 raises the bar with Yamaha's cutting-edge CFX Stereo Sampling, which delivers the inimitable, majestic sound of the company's flagship CFX concert grand. Plug a microphone into the Yamaha DGX-670's mic input and sing along with your playing — you'll hear your vocal through the onboard speakers and you can record your performance to USB memory.

Your musical journey continues

You'll rediscover your love of making music with the Yamaha DGX-670. Yamaha's You Are The Artist library makes it enjoyable to learn the songs you've always wanted to play, using sheet music from Hal Leonard, or just by reading the scrolling notes on the DGX-670's onboard Score Display. Explore the world of Yamaha music apps for iPad with the optional UD-WL01 wireless LAN adapter (available separately). Yamaha apps such as Chord Tracker will advance your piano playing like never before.

Packed with high-tech features to fit whatever sound and style you desire

The DGX-670 is packed with the latest Yamaha technology to help advance you on your musical journey. Professional-quality grand pianos are no longer reserved for the concert hall, thanks to the DGX-670's Yamaha CFX voice, which conjures all of the power, clarity, and room-filling resonance of a genuine piano. This impressive arranger's 88 weighted keys will have you forgetting it isn't the real thing, perfect for beginners and veterans who seek a shockingly realistic feel from their instrument. Where the DGX-670 truly shines is with regard to its style and voice options, with over 260 styles to choose from and a staggering 630 high-quality instrument voices at your disposal. The highly advanced Adaptive Style accompanies you like a seasoned musician would, analyzing your playing in real time with all of the appropriate accents and dynamics. Simple Style works similarly to Adaptive Style but focuses solely on the rhythm and bass sections, a great tool when wanting your notes to shine through the arrangement. The DGX-670's Unison & Accent function interacts with a foot pedal seamlessly, adding a doubled voice to your melody line and accenting notes with rhythmic "shots" when playing with more force. Smart Chord mode rounds out this incredible instrument's high-tech offerings, making it easy to play sophisticated chords by expanding simple triads into 7th and 9th chords, for instance, with just a few fingers.

Sonic superiority

Yamaha has been building acoustic pianos since 1900 and the company has been on the cutting edge of digital technology for decades. Under the hood of the DGX-670 are proprietary digital audio technologies such as Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM), which meticulously models the limitless number of factors that create the sound of a concert grand piano to impart vivid and richly varied expression to your music. For non-keyboard instruments, Yamaha's Super Articulation Voices intuitively reproduce natural expressive nuances, allowing keyboard players to achieve stunningly realistic renditions of orchestral instruments, guitars, and more. To inspire you further, Dual Mode lets you combine two Voices together, such as piano and strings, to create totally new hybrid sounds. Of course, the DGX-670 also features wireless Bluetooth audio that lets you connect your music player, so you can listen to and play along with your favorite songs!

The finest digital piano ever made:

I have been performing on and recording keyboards for 55 years. I am a solo piano performer and have played the best and worst stage pianos in the world. But at home in my tiny apartment, I must practice with headphones on a digital piano for the love of my neighbors when I practice from 4:00am to 7:00am every day.

I bought the first digital piano about the end of 1980s, it was in a Roland module, the U220, and I played it from my Juno analog synth keyboard. This first sampled piano was so much better than I could make on an analog synth. And so began my 35 year wait for a really great digital piano. When technology for digital pianos would advance, I would buy a new one, this was about every 5 years. Each new piano was disappointing, with short decay rates, no sympathetic resonance and no, or little tone control of the piano. So, practicing has always been a cringe ordeal, so when I had the time I would go the university to play their acoustic practice grand pianos, (always out of tune and voiced all wrong). Each time a new digital piano would come out I would hope for a great advancement, something software pianos already had, but I won't play a computer.

I've had about 10 digital pianos over the years and this DGX-670 is my 11th. What a piano it is, a fantastic sample evenly voiced across the 88 keys, a keyboard with good enough action, but more important the relationship between the mechanical action and firmware and parameter adjustments is perfect. Absolute complete control of the piano. Add to this the 3pedal system is also perfect, with the only soft pedal I have ever heard that sounds like it should. The half pedal sustain works perfectly AND is firmware range adjustable! Now add extensive editing possibilities of the sound, parameters that truly function for piano and getting precisely the piano sound you desire. Now add adjustable details like sympathetic resonance of keyboard and sustain pedal, and much more, including lid openings. A complete package of perfection and finally my 35 year wait for a GREAT digital piano has ended. It is a great joy to play this piano.

(NOTE) All the incredible sound adjusting does not come from the "Piano Room" function of this piano. You have to dig in and really build your own piano, but only need to do this once. The "Piano Room" function is an extremely abbreviated beginner's way of adjusting the piano sound, which may be just enough adjustment for most musicians to be happy, and no need to go deeper. For me, I am extremely critical of sound and need the tone/sound deep adjustments.

For the first time I am enjoying playing a digital piano with headphones. BUT wait, the speaker system on this piano is also very, very good. Every speaker system I have ever heard on portable pianos were horrid, and I NEVER used them. Using headphones all the time I didn't care, but you should never judge a digital piano sound by the built-in speakers, always use a good set of headphones. The DGX-670 built in speakers are acceptable and all beginners will be ecstatic with them. For everyone else good near field monitors will be necessary to capture the full fantastic sound of the DGX-670. (I suggest the JBL 5 inch monitors for about $150 each. Always use stereo listening source for this piano sample, NEVER use one speaker!)

(NOTE): The DGX series has been around a long time, 20 years I think, DO NOT think the previous versions were as good as this latest version. This new version (670) is completely different from the older versions in every way. Do not buy a previous version.

Included in this review is a sound audition published on YouTube. This recording was done from a deeply edited piano of the DGX-670. I designed a soft felt ambient piano for the video, custom made to my playing style and a tribute to this Yamaha pianos editing capabilities. Then it was audio recorded on the USB recording feature of the DGX-670. No additional processing was used, so what you hear is only the pure DGX-670 recorded to a USB drive and placed directly into the video.

Yamaha finally came through in the digital piano market, something I thought Roland would have done. I also own a Roland RD-2000, but it is having a problem with the V-Piano, hope to resolve this so this expensive keyboard can be used in my studio. Every keyboard (organs, acoustic pianos, digital pianos, synths, samplers) I have bought over the last 55 years has always had at least one problem, none were perfect until now, this Yamaha DGX-670 is as perfect as I could ask for. It may take 20 years of technology before Yamaha can improve on the piano! Yamaha has brought a piano even masters like to the masses at a price that is truly incredible. Make sure you buy the complete package of piano/stand/pedals.

Sounds G-R-E-A-T!!!!

I owned a DGX-660 piano sounds were excellent! I could not see how yamaha could improve on the not only the piano, guitars, strings, drums, bass guitar, but they have! With super articulations, mega voices, even the stand and pedal in new and improved. I primarily use my dgx-670 for practicing and as a midi control. I like the arrange keyboards. I use to write and record music for streaming services. I also, own a clavinova cvp-709 and yamaha psr- sx900 arranger piano and keyboard for composing and recording new music into UA Luna from my apollos. I thing the DGX670 CFX piano sound better than my PSR SX900 version which is crazy! I liked my DGX660 but it did not have a color screen. Well that is no longer a problem. The dgx670 is has many of the features of my CVP.

Disapointed

I got the white one, beautiful! I love the drums and the four variations, awesome ... but then the Piano sound. I considered this 670 because of a 660 that was loaned to me and I was sold! I figured one of the selling points is better sounds with the 670 so how can I go wrong, but I did. The sound coming out of this 670 is muddy and muffled. Actually the low end is loud and sounds nice and the high end is nice also, but middle C and an octave higher or lower is junk, sounds terrible. I did get into the Master EQ, didn't help. I did get some help from the tech guys with Sweetwater and we could not figure it out. They suggested sending me another one but I believe I will just move on to another keyboard. I so wished this was going to work out and be better than the 660. Yamaha, please look into this.
