AKG D 112 Dynamic Microphone at a Glance:
Kick drum mic with astoundingly high SPL capacity
The D 112 has earned a well-deserved reputation worldwide as the best kick drum microphone ever made. Heavy-footed drummers won't faze it, because the D 112 handles up to 160dB SPL with no audible distortion.
Specially engineered diaphragm for excellent low-frequency response
The D 112's specially engineered diaphragm with a very low resonance frequency maintains solid and powerful response below 100Hz, while a narrow band presence rise at 4kHz punches through dense mixes with little or no added EQ. The result is a kick drum sound that ideally balances precise definition and forceful impact. The D 112 is also an excellent choice for use with bass cabinets, trombones, and other bass instruments.
The D 112 comes with a built-in windscreen. An SA 60 stand adapter is also included.

"THE" Low End (signal) Mic
by Christopher Paglia from Byfield, MAAs a prior reviewer said already this is THE kick drum mic - indeed it is. This has also been my main mic for bass cabs as well. I am principally a bass player and therefore very picky about my tone. ... read more [+]For electric bass I often mic a 4x10 with a D112 and blend in a direct signal. This gives me a very flexible tone when it comes to mix down. Indeed there are other low-end (signal that is) mics, but this is one of those work-horse mics that follows me from the studio to live gigs. close [-]

Great! But needs EQ treatment
by Graham from Lakeville, CTThe AKG D112 is my go to kick drum microphone. It has the low end you need for most recordings when used as the sole microphone on kick drum. For extra low-end goodness, pair with a subkick mic (homem... read more [+]ade ones can work great!). I've found this mic gets nice and agressive when you boost the highs a 3k and cut some mud, don't be shy about boosting the highs, it will help it sit in the mix. Don't think twice, use the D 112! close [-]

This is THE kick drum mic
by Dean Drake from Bellingham, WABefore I bought my D 112, I tried different types of mics, but none of them could deliver the punchy low frequency that I needed - but none of them were designed for kick drum either. Once I put this... read more [+] mic up to the sound port on my kick drum, I knew I had the right mic. It gave me the low end I was looking for, but also transferred all the energy that went with it.

To me this mic is rather finicky though. You have to position it just right to get the sound you want. I haven't tried other mics that claim that you don't need to find the "sweet spot" though. After the experiences I have had with microphones, I am still skeptical about those claims. So, with what I know about this mic, I like it and will continue using it.
This mic is great for bass cabs as well. Once again, you need to position the mic properly. Then again, it all depends on what sound you want too. Maybe you WANT a different sound for a change. close [-]
