A Must-have Addition to Your Mic Locker

Miktek gave their venerable C7 a refresh for 2014, with a newly retooled zinc die-cast body, more reliable switches, and a new shockmount. The C7e still gives you the same outstanding performance that has made the original a studio essential for many Sweetwater Sales Engineers. This large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone is the sort of mic you can put up, turn up, and call it a day. Plus, thanks to the three selectable pickup patterns (cardioid, omni, and bidirectional), the C7e is as versatile as it is sweet sounding.

  • Three polar patterns give you amazing versatility

How does the Miktek C7e manage to sound so good?

The C7e's head amplifier has been designed around the AMI T7 transformer, coupled with high-quality components and hand-selected transistors. The goal? To get as close as possible to the tone of the most desired vintage microphones. For even more versatility, the C7e features a unique circuit that lets you switch the capsule's bias voltage from +48-+60 volts. That means you get two microphone voices in one. Use the +48 setting when you want to capture even the slightest of performance nuances. Switch over to +60 for an extremely articulate, accurate sound. However you use the C7e, be glad you spent so little for such a big-deal microphone. Miktek nailed it with this one.

Three polar patterns give you amazing versatility

The C7e is amazingly versatile. Its three polar patterns (cardioid, omni, and bidirectional) make it an ideal choice for a range of mono and stereo recording techniques, including Spaced Pair (A/B), X-Y (including Blumlein), ORTF array, and Mid-Side (MS). Read on for a few examples to get the creative juices flowing.

A few examples of what you can do with this incredible mic

Two singers, one mic: grab the C7e, set it to bidirectional, and you're good to go. Record a sax solo overdub with natural "slap": position the C7e (again, on bidirectional) between the sax player and the control room window; adjust mic position to taste. Ginormous Val Garay-style toms (two racks and a floor): three C7e mics on cardioid, fairly close-in - just don't let the drummer hit the mics! Full symphony orchestra, Bob Fine's Mercury Living Presence technique: Three C7e mics, set to omni, across the proscenium arch; record to three tracks panned left, center, right. Set your levels for peaks, then leave those faders alone and let the conductor balance the orchestra. We could go on, but you can already see how the C7e can be used in any number of ways to produce incredible-sounding tracks.

Another Review

I first offered my thoughts on this mic way back in 2014 after I had purchased it from Sweetwater. It is now 2019....five years later and here are my thoughts: I truly believe if you need a true workhorse mic....the C7e is it IMHO. It the ensuing 5 years this mic has done almost anything and everything in my studio, from vocals to drums, from acoustic guitar to miking my guitar amps. For vocals I lean in favor of my Mojave MA200....but sometimes for certain songs this mic gets the call. It lives along with my Shure B52 in front of the kick....blend them in the mix for a killer kick drum. I tend to lean on my Miktek C-5's for acoustic guitar if the acoustic is playing a feature role in a tune, but don't hesitate to put the C7e up when I am layering guitars ( acoustic and electric). My go to for miking amps 95.5 % of the time is a 57 and a Royer 101, but once again, for layering ,this mic can be yet another stylistic musical "paintbrush" if you will. If something happened to this mic (God forbid) I would not hesitate to get another one.

I LOVE THIS MIC ! ! !

This is an awesome mic ! I am using it to record classical vocalists with piano in figure 8 / omni about 6-10 feet away from the piano and vocalist. The sound may include more highs than expected, but it's easy to just taper them down in EQ.

I thought that the noise was coming from the mic initially, but later realized it was the interface settings and DAW that made the difference. I now use the C7e with an Apogee Quartet running through Logic or Studio One.

Thank you Miktek!!

AWESOME CLEAR MIC

Beautiful mic running through Apogee Quartet into LOGIC PRO / STUDIO ONE!!

It's very crisp and clear. For voice it may be a little bright for some ears : )

All you have to do it cut some of the highs and it's all good!

Thanks Miktek!

My Oh My !!

Been jonesing for one of these mics for a while. Vacillated between a Mojave MA301 fet and the C7e. My SE Matt recommended the C-7e, was he ever right ! Put this thing up on my D-28 12th fret 12" out....Wow! Not sure if I liked it better than my C-5's, but I could live with either one, the C-7e might have been just a tad more "open" and clear. Tried on my vox thru my Grace 101..... Hmmm, made me second guess if my MA200 sounded better ?! This is an amazing mic. Can't wait to try it in front of a drum kit.
