AKG C 3000 B Condenser Microphone at a Glance:

  • Newly-designed 1" diaphragm delivers high-end performance
  • Switchable pad accommodates loud instruments and amps

For vocals and solo instruments onstage or in the studio
The smooth, clear and open sound of AKG Acoustics’ C 3000 B has made it one of the world’s most popular studio microphones. The C 3000 B was designed as a studio and stage microphone to be used for both vocal and instrumental recording applications in which large diameter capsule excels. Used for vocal applications as well for solo instruments, the C 3000 B can be custom tailored for almost any stage or studio task.

Newly-designed 1" diaphragm delivers high-end performance
The earlier model C 3000 has had a large fan club in the project studio and home recording worlds for years. For the new C 3000 B, AKG designed a special 1-inch large-diaphragm transducer that closely approximates the vibration performance of top-class studio microphones, but can be made at much lower cost. The six-micron-thick active-mylar diaphragm that has been precision designed for the ideal frequency response. Inside the C 3000 B, the latest generation of Surface Mount (SMD) Technology ensures the microphone's electrical and mechanical stability. The features and performance of the C 3000 B make it at home anywhere, from your project or "high-end" studio to your live sound applications.

Switchable pad accommodates loud instruments and amps
Due to its surface area and special capsule tuning, the C 3000 B large-diaphragm transducer produces an exceptionally pleasing, smooth sound. An improvement over the original mic, the C 3000 B's switchable -10dB preattenuation pad immediately follows the transducer in the signal path, thus increasing the C 3000 B's SPL capability by a true 10dB. Loud sound sources are therefore no problem. An acoustically optimized cardioid polar pattern makes the C 3000 B an excellent choice for both recording and live sound applications where high gain before feedback is important.

AKG C 3000 B Condenser Microphone Features:
  • Large-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone

Pretty nice mic

I'm using this mic home for acoustic intruments (guitars, ukulele, banjo, percs etc) and voice.

Good mic

by a soundman from Ohio

The C3000B is great for female vocalists. I used an Audio Technica Pro 37R for the lead vocalist of a female trio that I recorded, but just could not get her track to sound good during mixing. Too muc... read more [+]h low-mid that I couldn't take away from the mix.Her mid's between 1-4 Khz were brittle and harsh. As a last minute effort, I had her redo her vocal part on 2 songs with the C3000B, and the difference was IMMEDIATE. I used the mic without the -10DB pad, in cardioid pickup mode, and with the low cut switch on:she sounded wonderfull! Unfortunatley, we had a deadline for the project's release that would not allow me to redo her part on the whole CD. But I know what to go to first in the future!
However, I would NOT recommend this mic for recording male vocalists. I have a baritone-bass voice and cannot dial in the sound I need live or tracking. It gives me and others that I've used it on a "grainy" texture that dosen't fit with the voices I've used it on. close [-]

Decent Mic for Some Sources, Not Recommended for Vocal for lack of Low-End Extension

by Justin from USA

Music Background: Engineer, Producer, Vocalist, Pianist, Project Studio Owner
OK here's the deal.. for the current price there are better choices for a vocal mic than the c3000b. The main issue I have owning this microphone is even with a stellar preamp (when I do use it, I ... read more [+]use it with the Great River NV) , it's severely lacking in low-end response. Also there is a bit of the tinny, overly hyped, Chinese-built sound to it. ~$400?? For that I can think of a couple of other mics (lots of decent Audio-Technica mics in that range) that kick its proverbial rear end. Overall, 2.5 / 5, speaking as a vocalist with long term experience with this model. close [-]

Good alternative to chinese mics

by BS from
May 21, 2006
Music Background:
The AKG C3000B is a good microphone in its price range. It doesn't have that hyped high-frequency sound like you know from many cheap chinese condensers (MXL, Studio Projects, etc.), so there should be... read more [+] less problems with sibilance or shrill vocals. A Studio Projects B1 sounds very harsh in comparison to the C3000B. But microphones will always be a matter of taste. I like the unhyped sound (especially for higher voices) of the C3000B and for the price of 200 Euros there's nothing to complain about.
Recommended (in its price range) for "thin" male and female voices. Especially if you're on a budget and have problems with sibilance. close [-]

Go for something else!

I have used this mic for 2 years and I don't recomend it. Not because it is a bad mic, but... Just save a little more and you will get a big step up than the thin and harsh sound of this one.

I can talk to my Sales Engineer about any piece of equipment, and he always steers me in the right direction. He truly knows what he's talking about, and he never tries to over-sell me on anything. If he worked in the Nashville area, I'd probably owe him about 20 dinners by now!
