TC Electronic BH250 Compact Bass Amplifier Head at a Glance:
  • Everything a bass player could ask for in a bass head
  • TonePrint technology opens up a world of killer bass effects
Everything a bass player could ask for in a bass head

Ditch the bulk without sacrificing functionality. With the BH250, TC Electronic tosses aside the notion that you only get full-sized control from a full-sized amp. Seriously, photos can hardly convey how portable this little amp is. We're talking about a mere 4 lbs. in a unit that's easily small enough to fit in your gig bag. And when you see what TC Electronic managed to pack in the BH250 bass amplifier, you're totally going to flip. For starters, the BH250 has two gain modes, accommodating both passive and active pickups equally well. A standard 3-band EQ circuit also lets you tweak your overall tone, allowing you to dial in the perfect sound for any venue. Another great thing about the BH250 is the handy built-in bass tuner, which you can use to tune 4-, 5-, and even 6-string bass guitars. There's a balanced XLR output for running direct, and a headphone jack for silent practice. And as a final special touch, TC Electronic designed the BH250 to play well with any cabinet or combination of cabinets with at least a 4-ohm load, so you practically never have to worry about what you hook up to it.

TonePrint technology opens up a world of killer bass effects

By now, practically every serious guitar player has heard of TC Electronic's TonePrint technology. The BH250 takes this same super-flexible effects concept and applies it to bass. The way it works is simple. You just go to TC's website find the bass tone you want, and download it to your BH250 bass amp head for instant recall any time you want it. Choose from chorus, flanger, vibrato, compression, drive, or even a super-cool octaver effect. There's a handy blend knob that lets you control the wet/dry mix of whatever TonePrint effect you grab. Switching TonePrint effects on the TC Electronic BH250 bass amp is also a breeze, particularly if you have a smartphone. Then you just go to the TonePrint app, and browse for tones from there. You'll find all sorts of cool tones from top bass players such as Nathan East (Eric Clapton, Fourplay, Toto), Charles Cave (White Lies), Michael Shuman (Queens of the Stoneage), and many others. When it's time to load up your new tone, you just hold your smartphone's speaker up to your pickups, hit play, and let it do its magic. It's that simple.

TC Electronic BD250 Compact Bass Amplifier Head Features:
  • An ultra-portable bass guitar amplifier head that packs full-sized amp features into a compact frame
  • 250-watt amplifier that's capable of powering any speaker cabinet with at least a 4-ohm load
  • Onboard TonePrint bass effects let you load up chorus, flanger, vibrato, compression, drive, or octaver effects designed by many of the hottest bass players in modern music
  • TonePrint wet/dry knob lets you blend in clean signal to taste
  • Select the ideal gain staging for either active or passive pickups
  • Shape your basic tone with the 3-band equalizer control

What's the best way to say that the BH250 is working for me?

I guess that would be to say that I bought another. I had a single BH250 driving a pair of Ampeg SVT210VA cabinets. When it came time to move a little more air, instead of starting from scratch, I bought another BH250 and another pair of SVT210VA cabinets and ran them in parallel. Got compliments on how clean it was. Another thing I liked about the rig is that I can run two separate Tone Print models with the amps. One has a bit of tube saturation model and the other has the octaver running just a tad. Fattens up the sound nicely.

TC Electronic BH250 Micro Bass Amp

I have a reoccuring gig (1 @ month) at a Casino of which I only wanted to make only one trip for load in/out. So, I decided to invest in one of the Bass Micro Amps currently available under $ for that particular gig as well as having access to a tiny 'back-up' amp that takes up minimal space. The topography of most micro amps seemed about the same, but the BH250 offers a built-in tuner and the ability to switch between TWO (2) downloadable special effects (TONE PRINT). So not only have I reduced the size/weight of the amp head I will need for the gig, but I can eliminate the need for my FX pedalboard as well.

The amp performance at the Casino gig went as well as, if not better, than I had hoped for. Since the PA system was only ceiling speakers (no FOH or subs), I had to push the Master Volume to about an '8' setting to get the 'feel' that Im used to at this gig. The speaker (Ampeg SVT-12HE @ 8 Ohms) and amp held up just fine. No overheating issues, no blown speaker. I had to frequently adjust tone controls for certain songs, but that's just to be expected as I was discovering the subtleties of the DYNAMIC TONE CONTOURING FILTER SECTION.

The second gig was a more traditional PA set-up with on-stage monitors. But because I had room for my FX pedalboard, I didn't use any of the TONE PRINT effects. I had my master volume down to about '6' most of the time. My instrument is a Fender J-Bass w/ passive PU's and Hipshot 'D-Tuner'.

Overall, the volume and tone of the BH250 seem to be very acceptable for most any gig. Nor did I experience any AC 60Hz noise/hum when using the DI output. The special features are a real treat as well. If you're a gigging musician, be sure to get the remote footswitch and TRS cable. With it you can select either or both special effects (factory default is a DRIVE and a CHORUS) and MUTE (for silent tuning). This may not ever become my main 'go-to amp' for every gig, but as a backup spare amp or when size/weight matters it fits the price point and will not dissapoint in performance.

Bought two of 'em and...

Couldn't be happier. All the power necessary to amp my Acme speakers with a built in tuner, tone print versatility, XLR output and it only weights 4 lbs. An A+ from Sweetwater!

Best little amp

I'm still getting used to this little beast. I'm currently running it through a 2-10 Ampeg cabinet where we practice. I haven't tried it yet in a venue or will I even try. It's just nice waking into the studio with this little guy instead of hauling in my 1-15 Ampeg combo.
