Great Little Amp... when turned up

I've had my Vox AC4 for a little over a year. I bought mine at a huge discount (around $190, new) at my local store. I needed a low wattage amp because I had just moved to a tiny apartment and my other amps were just too loud.

This amp rocks when turned up! It can get very gainy, but still clear enough for you to hear everything that is going on with the guitar. It can also do the great Vox clean tones that everybody loves.

That being said, I struggled a lot to find good tones from this amp. Specifically at low volumes.

For starters, it lacks some low end. This proved to be a problem since I could only use it at very low volumes, and with a strat with particularly low output pickups. That meant that the amp felt very sterile and lackluster. Turning the amp up, or using it with humbuckers does a lot to aliviate this problem.

The EQ controls were also weird for me to get used to. That's because the treble knob removes a lot of (much needeed) low frequencies when you turn it up. And I found myself sorely missing a mids knob.

The other problem on it is the Celestion Seventy-80 speaker. I found it sterile and a little bit boring to be honest, specially at lower volumes. I've tried the AC4 into a 2x12 with V-Types and it was much better. I haven't gotten around to changing the Seventy-80, but I'm looking forward to putting in a G12H-30.

All problems aside, once I got out of the tiny apartment and into my studio, I started really loving my AC4! This amp really shines when cranked!

Turning the volume all the way up and with the gain knob around noon, the amp goes into a beautiful british crunch. Turning the gain higher can get you into fairly distorted territories. The AC4 has more gain that what I need! Fair warning: this amp, even at 4 watts, gets very loud!

At higher volumes, low end is no longer an issue. In fact, when recorded, the reduced low frequencies and present highs work great in a dense mix.

Clean sounds are also great. With the volume all the way up and gain around 9 o'clock, the AC4 delivers an awesome chimey clean sound. The only problem there is that loud clean tones are not achievable with only 4 watts.

I would personally like a version of the AC4 with the normal channel of an AC30 instead of the top boost channel (which is what it has). I would also like a G12M-25 on it, or an Alnico Blue.

In conclusion, I recommend the Vox AC4. It is a great little amp. However, if you need to use it at low volumes, I would go with some humbuckers.

Incredible tone

I've had this amp for a couple months and absolutely love it. You can't beat the tone of a Vox. Even though it's marketed as a practice amp, I plan on gigging with it when playing smaller venues.

Wonderful Buy

I purchase a Vox Pathfinder for bedroom practice a couple of months ago. I was really impressed with it. So much so, I pulled the trigger on the Vox AC4 for use in my studio. Again totally impressed with quality of workmanship, sound and above all simplicity, It does not have all the voices and gimmicks that others do. It is similar to a Fender Pro Junior but at less cost. They put the money in the sound and performance. Mine was a black face grill and was an incredible bargain. ...My strat and tele love it as much as I do.

Great Little Amp!!

I purchased the Vox AC4C112VB. Mainly purchased it to practice around the house. I waited until I had a chance to play it at a full band practice before reviewing it. When it arrived I played it for about 1 1/2 hours and thought it sounded very nice, I had an old Vox Silver Bell, so I replaced the original Celestion. With the original speaker, I had the treble around 9-10 o'clock, with the silver bell, I'm able to use the treble a little more. I keep the bass around 2-3 o'clock. Love the sound of this amp! It kept up with a drummer and bassist no problem (classic rock tunes). Kept the gain around 1 o'clock and the volume around 11 o'clock. Takes pedals great. I also own an AC15HWX(my main gigging amp) - when comparing them through an A/B, the Handwired sounds smoother, but this amp is well worth the price I paid... I think it's an excellent deal at $... Mine came with zero quality issues - very happy with it!
