Used Music Gear & Audio Marketplace - Gear Exchange

Avoiding Fraud and Scams

Online scammers are becoming more sophisticated and often target buyers and sellers of high-value gear. They may pretend to be legitimate Gear Exchange users, trusted musicians, or even Sweetwater staff to gain your trust. With awareness and a few simple precautions, you can recognize suspicious behavior and protect yourself.

Here are key warning signs to watch for:

Too-good-to-be-true deals

If a listing is priced far below market value or a buyer offers significantly more than your asking price without negotiation, be cautious. Scammers often use unrealistic pricing to create urgency and bypass your instincts.

Requests to pay outside Gear Exchange

If someone asks you to complete payment through PayPal Friends & Family, Venmo, Zelle, wire transfer, gift cards, or any method outside of Sweetwater Gear Exchange, this is a major red flag. Gear Exchange protections only apply when transactions are completed through our platform.

High-pressure tactics

Be wary of anyone who pushes you to act immediately, claims there are other buyers waiting, or creates urgency to rush payment or shipment. Scammers rely on pressure to prevent you from verifying legitimacy. Often they may ask you to leave a review before your item has been delivered.

Unusual or inconsistent communication

Watch for poor grammar, generic messages, refusal to answer specific questions about the gear, or excuses for why they can’t use Gear Exchange’s normal checkout process.

Requests for personal or account information

Never share passwords, verification codes, or personal financial information. Sweetwater will never ask for your password or request sensitive information through private messages.
