I'd like to retract my previous Review

It works fine with multiple units in one room. Turns out it was User error. These are well worth the money. If you don't have one, buy one! You will love it.

Cut the Cord

By Gary Benson from Argyle, WI on February 15, 2024 Music Background: Professional Armature.

As I prepare for my first public appearance with my Telecaster, I wanted to stand and play like the pros do. I'm an beginner, but think it is much easier to play sitting rather than standing. After getting tangled up in my chord more times than I could patiently handle, I looked into a wireless system. Now I can move around as I learn how to play in the upright position!! Man, what freedom this provides without any compromise in sound that I can detect.

There are many systems out there, but my amplifier is a Boss Katana 50 Mkii EX and I knew that the Boss WL-50 would be a perfect match. I always look at price and features. So, for my simple needs this hit the middle point for all the benefits at a very reasonable price.

I have used it on both my Fender Telecaster and a Yamaha acoustic. It works great on both guitars, and I really like the feature that "kills" the power to the transmitter when you remove it from the instrument. You don't need to shut the amp off to switch between guitars.

I highly recommend this product, and time will tell how long the battery lasts. It is not replaceable according to their website, but battery technology has come a long way and I would expect it to last at least a couple of years.

Thanks always to my sales pal Jason!! Thanks also to Sweetwater. You are a great company.

Works like it's supposed to.

By Sweetwater Customer on December 8, 2023 Music Background: Church guitar player, playing since 1971.

No cut out issues like I had with the WL-20L I bought earlier. I don't know what the difference is, but this one works as desired. The other one works fine in a different setting, different church; probably interference from the multiple hand held mics.

Works wonderfully with minor flaws

By Chris Yohn from Cleveland on March 9, 2023

I use this system for my acoustic violin pickup and have been happy with the sound and performance. No drop outs, even with multiple other wireless systems on stage. It also has excellent battery life.

I'd replace it only if Boss offered a version 2 with the following improvements:
- allow for an elbow joint between the receiver's 1/4 inch input and the body so it can fit more compactly against my fiddle. That'd be freaking awesome, man.
- also wish I could power the receiver AND recharge the transmitter with my pedal power brick. To do both requires the BOSS power supply (not included) and I'd rather use one power cord instead of two.
- when the receiver is off you can't fully insert the transmitter into the receiver for storage without draining the transmitter's battery. I solve this by not inserting the transmitter all the way into the receiver so no big deal, but still…

Overall awesome product, as is usual for BOSS. There are far less expensive options on the market but I've had good luck with BOSS products in the past so the premium was worth it for me. Also nice to have it in pedal format.

I love going to Sweetwater for stuff that I can't buy at my local store. Customer service rules. Within a half hour of buying this thing I received both a text and voicemail from what-I-assume was the real dude packing my order. It brightened my Saturday just a little.

Excellent Wireless

Boss WL-50

By Kenny Karr from Houston, TX on November 10, 2021 Music Background: Performing "Country with a Roots-Rock Chaser", playing live for over 40 years

I used this for the first time at a 3 hour gig the other night, along with my wireless mic set up for me and my female singing partner. Everything worked flawlessly with no dropouts etc. I don't roam around on stage, so the distance factor doesn't matter to me. I use wireless set up from another brand, but if Boss made something similar, I'm sure I would give them a try as well.
I haven't tried it outside yet, so that will be something to review once my next outdoor gig comes up.
Very happy with the Boss WL-50 overall.

No better way to cut the cord!

By Geoffrey Hazard from Phoenix, AZ on June 11, 2021 Music Background: Several decades as playing and performing musician.

Have had a few wireless systems before that were good and worked as expected. The range was the only issue. After about 30' the sound would start to fade a bit. This one is cable-solid sound up to 60'. There is no hiss, distortion, or signal bleed from other wireless devices. The sound is clean and pure. Charging is easy and can be done 2 ways. Only drawback was with my Traveller Guitar. The leg rest makes the plugging in almost impossible. But it is a guitar that I would not normally use in a performance setting. Every other guitar sounds just like a high end cable is in use. So far I have charged it once, and played between 3-4 hours. There has been no issue with battery life at all! If you need a seriously solid wireless for your guitar, get this one! You will not be disappointed!

This is my first wireless system. Played guitar for 30 years and always dreamed of ditching the cables. Ordered it last week and it delivered on Sunday, mothers day (those FedEx drivers are working overtime). Kudos to FedEx and to Sweetwater. Sweetwater has been great to work with every time. This unit works really great. I was concerned if I would be able to notice any latency.... I can't notice any delay. It does seem to affect my sustain by such a tiny amount that it's hard to even complain about it. The only negative thing I can think of is that it sticks out from my Les Paul a few inches and I worry I might break it off one day. It seems to be built fairly sturdy so I'll just have to be careful not to break it. I gave this 5 stars because it really is pretty awesome. Can't wait to play it some more. Good job Sweetwater you came through again on this recent purchase and I'll definitely be giving you my business again.

Works flawlessly

By Sweetwater Customer on April 2, 2021

Always wanted a wireless, and took a chance on this. So far no glitches, good range, decent charge life. The only thing I would like to see changed is to have the plug at 90 degrees so the body of the transmitter doesn't stick out from the jack. Always great to deal with Sweetwater.

Works with EMG'S

By justin charles from Fla on February 7, 2021 Music Background: pro for many moons

This is an addendum to my initial review . There is this rumor floating around that states you can only use this wireless system with passive pickups. Let me dispel this. I am using the WL50 with active EMG pickups ( 85/85 set )with no issues whatsoever. Another plus for this unit !

Freedom !

By Justin Charles on January 25, 2021

To be honest, I have only used the WL 50 in my studio, but, I'm loving the freedom from a cable. No issues with signal drop or guitar tone at all. After looking at all the options in the $ range, I think I made the best choice!

Get it!

By Monty Naffke from Asheville, NC on December 12, 2020 Music Background: regional cover band

So simple, so reliable, SOUNDS GREAT! No noticeable latency. No more doing the 'cable dance' - in rehearsal or on stage. Don't know why I waited so long to go wireless.

Boss WL-50 wireless

By Brett from Kansas city on December 1, 2020 Music Background: Old wanna be

Zero noise / ground loop / dropping / tone loss!
I was worried after watching some reviews that the tone wouldn't be as good as the line six. Well without the line six to compare it to, I can tell you it sounds brilliant! And that's through three true bypass pedals before it hits the front of the amp, no buffer! Alex Mattingly is an amazing guy to work with! Super patient and helps you find what you need, and doesn't try to push you into what you don't!

Wow

By Metz on October 29, 2020

A very good experience from someone who has all odds against them

By Troy Lytle from McMinnville, TN on January 7, 2020

Let me explain my setup first. I use an active guitar through a Peavey invective that powers this wireless unit and 3 other pedals off the built in 9v outs on the head. I should have an issue with active pickups. I should have an issue with not using a dedicated power supply with this unit. I have no issues. You can split the 2 9v outs on the invective to power multiple pedals. I also had to rewire my guitar which sounds awful, but it's actually only the output. When I first hooked this up I got the really annoying rhythmic thump sound and very little guitar. After troubleshooting, I discovered on the Boss website why some guitars are not compatible with these. The grounds are backwards. If you take your 2 output grounds on your guitar and wire them the other way (no difference in operation) it works flawlessly! I'm thrilled! Even the cable distance falloff works! If you have the know-how or take your guitar to a technician, rewire so you don't have this issue any more. 100% worth it for this awesome wireless unit.

The Cat's Meow

The Boss WL-50 is fantastic. I like the fact that it uses the standard Boss power supply and it has the same footprint as a Boss pedal. It comes alive immediately, no fooling around.

Love it

Does what it is supposed to do

By Meja from MI on July 17, 2019

I've had the WL-50 for a little while now and it does what it's supposed to do. It doesn't drop the signal unless there is a physical obstruction such as a wall... people don't seem to affect it.

You can use a cable in case the battery in the transmitter goes dead.

You can unplug the transmitter from any guitar silently which is really nice... I do question the longevity of the little detent switch on the transmitter that mutes the output but time will tell on that. It's not clear if you can get a replacement transmitter either.

I don't use the cable tone switches built into the unit so I can't really comment on that.

Probably the only negative thing I could say is that I don't particularly like that the transmitter, depending on the guitar type, can stick out of the bottom of the guitar when plugged into the jack which seems like asking for you to break it off on something. With my Stratocaster it's a non-issue, but with my Les Paul I'm worried I'm going to break it off. I'll probably buy a small instrument cable for it and just put the transmitter in my pocket or attach it to the strap so it's not hanging out there.

I initially wanted the Shure GLXD16 because a friend of mine has it and it's a nice unit but the boss was literally less than half the cost. To me the price is what makes this a five star piece of equipment.

Free at last!

AMAZING... GAME CHANGER

By Jason from Chicago on June 20, 2019 Music Background: Play for fun

This thing is an absolute game changer. I love this.. came in yesterday and I noodled all night... no cords and only chords is amazing. I put this as the first pedal on my board going into my tuner and everything works amazing.. I love that you can still charge the transmitter with a usb cable through the wall if you dont want to keep your pedal board on charging the transmitter. Make sure to not push the transmitter all the way in so it turns it on and runs your battery out! I have a PRS silver sky and it was a little tough at first to get it in.. but once I did it once it got easier the next time. You have to slide it in perfectly with minimal force and it is perfect. I love it.. and I will forever play wireless now. I dont hear any delay at all. I went upstairs on the 2nd floor and was playing guitar and no tone change.. and sounded great! i went in the bathroom downstairs and had absolute no problems. I am a lover of this. The long and short cable modes really make a difference in tone. I like the short cable.. it made the tone super nice.. I also love that you can plug a cable into this pedal and still play connected if wanted too.... Highly recommend this!

Great wireless system

By Rick from KC MO on June 11, 2019 Music Background: 50 years of rock and blues

Considering the comparative cost and features of the Boss WL-50 I think it is a great wireless system. My brother, and fellow Sweetwater customer, started using one and liked it, so I took the plunge. I have noticed no colorization of tone and the 2ms of latency is not detectable. The 65 foot range is not as large as some systems but most players don't venture further than that from the stage or their pedalboard. It charges quickly, is easy to set up, easy to use and I love that it's the same size as most pedals and fits on my board. I don't think you'll find a better system for the price. I considered going to wireless for quite some time and I'm glad I made the switch. Now I'm FREE! Shout out to my Sales Engineer, Matt Zuleger, for his consultation.

Freedom!

By Sweetwater Customer from Colorado on May 26, 2019

Freedom from tripping, tangling, moving the cord out of the way. Forgot how much I enjoy being cordless. Especially with such an easy plug and play unit--NO strap pack! No buzz/click when switching guitars. Not a single dropout yet. Excellent charge time. Haven't noticed a difference using the the cable tone myself, others may. HD sound. Best purchase in a while.

awesome wireless system!

By KK from New York on May 15, 2019 Music Background: Heavy Metal band

very easy to use. just plug and play.
it says 12 hours of playing time once charged.
also, I don't feel any change in tone.

only concern is if your guitar is stratocaster, the wireless sender may interrupt arming control.

other than that, it's almost perfect!

BOSS!!!

The more I use this thing, the more I absolutely LOVE it! It works exactly as advertised, and the switching between guitars is utterly SILENT! The tone is clean and pure, and it couldn't be easier to use. And NO bulky body-pack transmitter. Would I recommend it? Oh, yeah. Would I ever buy another? In a heartbeat.

Good So Far

By KLE on April 23, 2019 Music Background: Weekend Warrior stuff. Country, Rock, Progressive. Covers, originals, etc.

Hard to give an in-depth review with only 2 uses. But I can say both uses were successes. Once at rehearsal, then at the gig that weekend. No coloration of sound. No perceivable latency. Had someone familiar with my rig in the audience. Didn't notice anything unusual about the sound/rig, other that a blinking light on my guitar. I'd say that is successful.

Had two other wireless of two more manufacturers on the stage with no issues between all 3 of us. That's a plus.

I like that the receiving unit fits nicely on the pedal board. A bit taller than the other "pedals", but still fits in the gigbag. The battery cover could be better placed for adding velcro/dual lock - kinda eliminates adding/changing batteries if you want enough lock to keep the unit on the board. I'm using a dedicated 300mA outlet from my Truetone CS6 to power the unit. No issues. Also using the WL-50 to power some lower mA consumption devices (2 - total about 70mA). No issues there, either.

All in all, first impressions are pretty good. Giving it a 5 Star for now, since it's performed well. It's how long it'll last that is hard to judge.

Boss WL50

By Mel from Southern Idaho on April 22, 2019 Music Background: semi-pro

My first wireless system. Did a LOT of research before buying this one. I simply could not be happier. I appreciate that I can change guitars without noise, simply by removing the transmitter, and plugging it in to another guitar. Give it a couple seconds to reconnect, and there ya go. Absolutely silent! The tone is all I could ask for, it actually sounds better than playing through cables, to MY ears anyway. Money well spent, in my opinion. And the fact that it is compatible with pedal boards is a real plus, even though I use minimal pedals. And last, but not least, NO BODY PACK!!!!! My Sweetwater rep, Shelby, did me right with this purchase, as usual. Would I recommend this item? Oh, yeah. Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat. Just don't forget to get the recommended power source for it.

Very Reliable

By Chris from California on April 4, 2019 Music Background: Classic and hard rock, metal

To start with I got this product as a fan of Boss products, and I have to say that I was not disappointed. This product successfully does what it says it does with no flaws. The signal stays strong, and allows the musician to freely roam around. Even with walls or obstacles in the way the Boss wireless system stays strong with no signal cutting out until I get down the hall of my home and into my kids room (accross the house). The sound quality does not diminish at all. The Line 6 unit may sound a bit clearer when standing right next to the signal base, but within several feet the sound diminishes and signal cuts out.

Free as a bird now

By Joshua C. from OR on April 1, 2019

I have wanted to get a wireless system for sometime now. After reading the reviews on this one I decided to pull the trigger and it was worth the wait. It works perfectly. Just plug it in and walk around. I'm still getting used to the fact that I don't have to stand right next to my amp. I played a show last week and I was walking around the whole bar and dancing with the audience as I played. It fits right on my pedalboard and runs on two double A's.
I have also plugged it in to my one spot with other pedals and had no issues.
It kills the signal when you pull it out of your guitar eliminating any buzz.
The cable tone switch on the back barely makes any noticeable difference so I just leave it off.
I play Ibanez guitars through a marshall so it might have a different effect with different amps or guitars.
The boss WL-50 is awesome. Get one!

Good Rig

By Sweetwater Customer on February 20, 2019

I used this for one show so far and it worked perfectly. I walked off stage about 30 feet from the base station with no problem.

The base station fits on my pedal board nicely and the transmitter is a good size and shape.

The unit has a couple of design issues (battery door placement where Velcro will cover it) and transmitter drains if left in the base station after charged, but those are minor issues. Time will tell the rest of the tale.

I had the line six one and I paid a fortune in disposable transmitters with quickly dying batteries before I decided I was done with line 6. Their original base station only had usb mini power connection which was inconvenient.

I'll follow up if there is any issue with battery life!

Incredible (don't use a ONE SPOT to power it though)

By John Younkin from North Richland Hills, TX on January 5, 2019

This thing is perfect with one exception. Here is a question I never saw answered or asked so I'm going to share my experience with one tiny issue. If you use a One Spot 9v to power your pedals it will work with the boss wl-50 but it will cause a very harsh high pitched whine through your amp. I ended up using a separate 9v adapter charger from my one spot and it totally got rid of the high pitched whine. Whatever you do, be prepared to purchase the PSA that boss recommends and steer clear of using with the one spot. It really needs to have it's own power supply to be as clean as possible. I honestly have to say that this is one of the best ones I've used and I love it. Make sure you leave power to it while your away and plug in the receiver so it stays ready to go. This is honestly one of my favorite things I've bought in a long time because we move around a ton on stage and now I'm free.

Amazing

By John Younkin from North Richland Hills, TX on January 4, 2019 Music Background: Signed metalcore artist.

I'm a signed touring musician and have stayed away from wireless because I didn't want to mess with it. I recently just got this new boss wl50 unit, and it exceeds every expectation! I mounted on my pedalboard and leave it plugged in charging while I'm away. when I'm ready to use it I unplug it then put it in my guitar and wham, no issues and perfect tone! you must own this... If you have a pedal board just get this one don't mess with the wl20's. just put the receiver in the transmitter and leave your power strip on for it to charge so it's mostly always ready without any worries. honestly, this is one of the most amazingly simple products that works that I've ever bought. And by the way my sales rep Jason is amazing!

Great Wireless for the money

By Ed Reader from Middle Tennessee on December 22, 2018 Music Background: Weekend Warrior Musician

I've used wireless in the past and some were fine, but decided to try one of the latest on the market. I liked the fact this was compact, would fit on my pedalboard, plug into existing 9vdc supply and has built-in charging dock station for the transmitter.

So far I have only used at home and practice. Works great. Is very transparent to signal. Of course I go through a pedalboard which impacts signal slightly anyways, but it sounds no different than when I run a cable.

Only time will tell on battery life, but so far it's been great. I haven't kept actual time of use, but am sure to unplug from guitar during extended periods of not using.

One tip: I had an intermittent problem with my Telecaster. Worked fine on my Stratocaster. What the issue was on the Tele was the jack nut was well down the threaded barrel that you plug into. Therefore contact with the switch on the transmitter was not solid. I solved by adding a second nut to give the wireless switch good contact. Problem solved and works as it should.

One suggestion for Boss: Make the hard wired input jack usable for a second guitar simultaneously. (presently it disconnects wireless when in use). Would be great for my backup guitar on a live gig. (Yes, I can plug in if needed on the fly). I guess I could run a second wireless too. (Wonder if I can pair a second transmitter to this WL-50)?

I would definitely buy again. Plus Sweetwater is the best to deal with.

FREEEEEEEDOM!!!

By Sweetwater Customer from Santa Rosa, CA on December 19, 2018

All the reviews were right about this one. Simply flawless unit and sound. No more cables to trip on. No more standing in one spot. And the ability to wander the room and hear the sound from all angles is a huge bonus. There are no pops or hisses when you disconnect as the button on the transmitter kills the signal and the power (brilliant!). Works fine on my Telecaster and my ESP with active EMG humbuckers (no mono adapter needed). Will I use this for a live show? That is still to be determined. My plan was just to use it for home use and boy does it work well for that. I waited months for this and I'm glad I did. Well worth the price. Buy It Now!

Great wireless unit for bass

By Erik Johnson from Portland, OR on December 10, 2018

With just a few weeks under my belt with the WL-50, I can already tell it's going to be a winner. I use this for bass, and it is super convenient and sounds great. The design of the unit is ingenious, where the remote is always being recharged when not in use, and the setup is brain-dead simple. I've not experienced a single problem with the unit; it just works.

Despite some of the light criticism this unit has received about the high-end not being as sparkly as its Line 6 equivalent, well... I couldn't be happier with the sound. Though made of heavy plastic, this pedal is stout and will provide a long life of service. Really, the only ding it gets is the position of the battery door on the bottom of the unit -- it is located exactly where you would expect to put your Velcro hook or Double-Lock for mounting on the board. I was able to do some creative cutting of my Double-Lock to get around the issue, but it is a very minor design flaw considering that this is intended as a pedal (ostensibly bound for a pedal board).

Fantastic system that works perfectly with bass guitar. Five stars!

There is a whine sound when using active pickups that use a stereo guitar jack to power on the pickups. The whine is really noticeable when using high output active pickups into a very high gain guitar amplifier.

U need to use a "mono" patch cord (mono 1/4" male plug - mono 1/4" female jack) between the guitar stereo jack (which is often used to turn the active pickup [9-18] volt circuits on) and the transmitter. This is because the ring (between the tip and ground) on the WL transmitter is the charging contact for the transmitter. The mono jack on the patch cord 1/4" female jack that u plug the transmitter into will de-couple the ring when u r playing ur instrument.

Or u can rewire ur guitar, replace the stereo jack w/ a female mono jack and use a separate toggle switch to turn the active pickups on and off. Or replace one of the guitar pots with a combination pot (volume or tone) that also has an on off switch function if u just want to plug the transmitter straight into the guitar.

I have made the short patch cord (1/4" male to 1/4" female jack) so that I can use the WL transmitter on all my guitars that r equiped w/ Seymour Duncan Blackouts and Live Wires) which r active. I made the patch cord long enough to put the WL transmitter in my pocket This method works for me. U might try other methods that work out for u.

I hv also seen writeups of guys doing this w/ other similiar wireless systems when using active pickups.

Questions: Call Dave at Roland support in Los Angeles Ca.... Giving a shout out to Dave. He's been a great help to solving this issue.

System works as advertised.

Fantastic Wireless

By Gus L. from Canoga Park, CA on August 4, 2018 Music Background: Been playing guitar for 30+ years, semi-professional

I've used/owned several wireless guitar systems before from way back in the 80s. I used the Nady and Samson wireless systems and they were very expensive compared to the Boss WL-50 and they did not perform as great as the Boss WL-50. The latency is very low even at 100 feet away from the receiver. There is no lost in tone. I recommend this wireless system indeed.

WL-50

By Dave from Virginia on August 2, 2018

I had systems by Shure and Nady for very short periods of time back in the early 90's. Both of which were absolute tone-sucks. I swore I'd never waste my money on a wireless system again. But this right here is the golden ticket. I sure do wish this technology was available 20-something years ago, when I was gigging at least once a week. I've gotten up to 30' from where it sits on my pedalboard and haven't noticed any latency. Boss advertises "65' line of sight". My amp is in the basement, and I have to walk upstairs before I get just the slightest bit of noticeable latency. And the best part, no significant coloring of my amp's tone. I got this just to mess around with, as my days of playing out are long over. But, if you gig regularly at venues that have a larger than usual stage, I would imagine this just might be worth it's weight in gold. Special thanks to my sales engineer, Matt Masek. The guy is top-shelf and has taken great care of me on every order I've placed over the last 7+ years.

What a treat it is to walk around and not have the ball and chain!! FREEDOM!!!!!!! I love this so much. I was hesitant on ever going wireless due to the high cost and crappy signal quality. This remedies both in smashing fashion! 5 Stars all the way. I will be doing an outdoor gig in 3 weeks and I'll be doing my own sound check.

Boss is Boss

By C.N. from TX on August 1, 2018

In short, the WL-50 is everything I hoped it would be for a wireless system in this price range and it has a new home on my pedalboard. Thank you Boss and Sweetwater!

I've been on the lookout for a convenient, affordable wireless setup for some time if for no other reason than I hate being restricted by wires as I play and move about my practice space to tweak controls. I play a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, and in both cases I enjoy playing out through my pedalboard and amps which I've carefully honed over time to support both types of instruments. The one major thing that's kept me away from the competition was the fact that they have a reputation to not work well with active electronics and most of my instruments are of that type, so I mostly shied away from them. That and most of the high-end units are a little too bulky (not to mention costly) for a home setup.

I'm a long time Boss/Roland user and can't recall a single quality issue with any of their products I've owned. So, when Boss announced they're releasing a wireless product I knew it was going to be good and preordered it right away. And I'm glad to say I have not been dissapointed by that blind faith. The unit works well with active electronics and is truly ultra-low latency. I also have a set of fairly high-end wireless headphones which I use to practice quietly without having to worry about tangling up in wires running to headphones. Those have something on the order of 20ms latency, but I'm still able to play out through them even with whatever minimal latency the WL-50 adds to the equation. In this way I can have a truly wireless and almost silent practice setup when I want to play with effects and not disturb others. It's also nice that it does not pop the speakers when you plug/unplug the transmitter from your guitars.

The convenience of having the receiver/charger right there on the pedalboard is great. However, I will mention that I decided to run a dedicated Truetone 1-Spot to the receiver unit so that it will remain always-on to keep the battery charged since I do shut off the board's main power supply when not in use. Another option would be to charge the transmitter separately using a USB wall charger if you really need to run it off of your board's main supply. But to me, that defeated the convenience of having the cool pedalboard charging dock.

The range of the unit isn't going to break any records, although it works just fine for my purposes. I'm sure it works the advertised 65 feet line-of-sight, but I can get it to break up slightly when I walk into my living room which is about 30 feet or so from my practice space. Of course that puts at least 3 walls between me and the receiver which is also in the same room with my wireless router, so I suppose that's not bad. Just don't think you're going to be running it inside your house and jamming out glitch free from across the street or anything.

The different models were a bit confusing to me at first, so for those in the same boat I'll highlight that the WL-50 gives you the functionality of both the WL-20 and WL-20L with one additional cable tone simulation not available on the WL-20. So, if you play several types of instruments, then you'll appreciate the functionality of both the WL-20 and WL-20L in one unit which makes the WL-50 a no brainer. Even so, the WL-50 is probably the best option for most people since you can simply plug the base unit into power and set it near the amp which gives you a convenient place to dock and charge the transmitter when not in use. I'd say the only reason to get the WL-20 or WL-20L would be if you truly do want a minimalistic "virtual cable" that will fit in your pocket. It's just a bummer you have to choose between cable tone simulation or not on those units.

Nearly Perfect

By Colin H from Austin, TX on January 29, 2024

I bought this to replace a Relay G30 I had for nearly 10 years, and was looking for something compact and rechargeable to make going wireless really painless. The WL-50 is attached to my Templeboard and powered by an output on a Cioks DC7. I've used the unit for a few weeks now, in both live and home studio settings.

As long as the DC7 is powered on and the receiver is plugged in to the transmitter, it's charging! This means that while I'm setting up or waiting to go on it has time to get some extra juice. When I play at church, I'll get through rehearsal and the first set with no issue, then it has another hour to recharge between the two additional sets. This charging routine works really well for my setup and has been much less stressful than burning through AAs.

The transmitter works well enough for my needs. It easily disconnects from the pedalboard and works with both side-mount jacks and top-mount Strat jacks. I haven't done a ton of range testing—for church it's no problem since I don't really move around, and for my band I think it's sufficient for the amount I move around. Latency is good, and I haven't had any dropouts. I knew that a unit like this wouldn't have the same capabilities as a larger body pack, but I was willing to take that loss in order to remove as much intrusive cabling and packs as possible. If I needed something more stable I'd probably lean towards a rack unit instead of a pedalboard unit anyway.

Unlike my old Relay, the cable tone switch on the WL-50 is very dramatic. It dumps a ton of high end in the "Short" and "Long" positions. Since I usually roll some high frequencies at the end of my signal chain, I'm usually setting the WL-50 to "Off" or "Short" at most.

I'm glad that the WL-50 has a physical input you can use to bypass wireless. This makes it more flexible to where I can always plug in as a backup option or if I just don't feel like going wireless. On the Relay this would have required unplugging cables to remove the receiver from the chain. My one complaint about the WL-50 so far is that plugging anything into the input jack bypasses wireless functionality immediately. I wish this was selectable, or that it would prefer wireless as long as the transmitter was in use. If that were the case, I could route the input through my Templeboard and connect it to my 4x MOD, so that when I wanted to go wired the input would be in a more convenient position. Not a dealbreaker, but not as flexible as it could be!

Amazing tone!

By Michael Dufault from Bessemer City, NC on May 12, 2022 Music Background: Live music

It has a cable tone selector and it definitely sounds like my long coil lava cable. Also, the range and the battery life are hard to beat. You cannot go wrong with this unit for this price. I have owned this about 2 months and done several live gigs in several different rooms. Buy it, it does the job!

Great wireless

By Rob from New Orleans on June 25, 2019 Music Background: 80's Metal

Aig wireless crapped out on me. Seen some YouTube videos on the Moss WL-50. Working really good for live performance. Easy set up. Fits in the corner of my pedal board. \m/

Very compact useful Wireless System

By Scott Douglas from Texas on January 19, 2019 Music Background: Rock/Jazz

I play with an extremely clean, plunky Strat settings at times. At regular stage volume (the amp turned up loud because I turn the preamp down to get really clean sounds, this wireless guitar unit is very quiet. It is also compact, with the footprint of a slighty larger than normal footpedal.

Other people have remarked that you can't leave the transmitter plugged in to the unit when the power is off, and that's true. However, the transmitter has a micro USB jack, so it can be powered anywhere at anytime. If I haven't charged it recently I can power it up on the way to a gig while driving in my car.

The last remark I will make is about a comparison I saw on YouTube between another wireless model that uses a fragile micro USB power jack, and this unit. This unit is more rugged (especially the power jack). There seems to be a slight amount of artifact in this unit compared to the micro USB wireless (of which I am a previous owner). I could tell a subtle difference, but in a real life application, on stage, you cannot tell. And who would insist on using their wireless in the studio?
Just to be clear, I didn't sell my micro USB wireless because of any short comings. It still worked great and I had the micro USB jack facing an area of my pedal board where it couldn't be accidentally stepped on. I had an unsolicited offer to sell it to an amatuer player friend, and chose to trade off that slight difference in artifact for a much more robust unit.

Good Little Wireless System

By Bill Leavitt from Callaway, MD on February 6, 2024

Works great for me now. I did have an issue with signal loss at first but Sweetwater's Customer Service (Jalen Floyd) and Support team (David Seanor) quickly contacted me and helped me fix the issues I was having with my system. Sweetwater's level of quality customer service is so rare to find today and I love it.

Works well!

By Sweetwater Customer on September 15, 2023

Works well so far!

Works great but sticks out a little

By Mark A McGrath from TX on April 6, 2021

Works as described, plays clear without interruption and no noticeable latency. Only issue is that it sticks out from the guitar plug at a straight angle which makes playing sitting down a bit of a challenge so you don't break the transmitter. Tried and angle plug but that does not really help. If you play standing up all the time not an issue I suppose. One more star for an 90 degree angle plug.

Works excellent..I'd highly recommend getting one

Excellent, with some room for improvement

By Nigel from San Jose on October 5, 2019

I also have the Boss Katana Air, which uses the same transmitter. The feature I love with the Air is that the transmitter is put into a mode where it powers off and on in response to motion. E.g if you put the guitar down for a, configurable, period of time it powers off, and the moment you pick it up again it powers itself and the receiver/amp on.

With the WT-50 the transmitter is put into a mode where power off/on is based on output from the guitar, and there is no way to make it switch to motion based control. The problem I have with this is that, unless I remember to turn the volume on my Fender Strat down to zero, the transmitter stays on and the battery discharges. I’ve confirmed the same issue is present whether using the transmitter that cane with the Katana Air or the transmitter that came with the WT-50 (transmitter model is identical), so it seems to be a general issue. These are passive pickups, so it’s odd the power on/off sensitivity is set to that level.

The other problem is that the receiver won’t keep the transmitter battery trickle charged at full charge once it’s reached fully charged. At some point it stops the charge and the transmitter battery will begin to discharge. If you leave it plugged in and go back a week later the battery is empty, and you need to unplug/replug the transmitter to start the charging process again. As a result you need to remember to slightly unplug the transmitter from the receiver once charged. It would have been far more convenient to allow the receiver to periodically top up the transmitter to keep it at full charge.

Aside from these usability issues though, the WT-50 is excellent. I love the wireless freedom, and the immediate response and low latency.

Great accessory

By Sweetwater Customer from Gurnee Illinois on April 25, 2019 Music Background: Less than 2 years

I purchased the wireless unit to use in my practice area at home. The basement area where I practice is small. A lot of times the cord from the bass guitar would get entangled with chair and when I would stand up to set the guitar on the rack, I would step on the cord and get an intense jolt across the shoulders. This would frustrate me and also, cause unnecessary wear and tear on bass.
When I received the unit and hooked it up the issues were resolved. No more stepping on the cord. As a test, I even went upstairs on the outside patio and played with no interference.
The only concern about the unit is it should have included the power adapter. The receiver stayed charged about 4 hours. However, with several days of practicing each a week, you can go through a lot of batteries!
This was a great buy! The Sweetwater staff was great and I received the item in several days. I purchase all of my gear from Sweetwater!

Solid unit

By Marc on December 11, 2018

I haven't been able to really put the unit through the paces as yet but, super easy to set up, sounds as good as any of my cables and no latency problems that I, or any of my band mates, could detect.

So far I've only used it at one rehearsal and one gig but it worked flawlessly at both..... the only time I got any noise was when I had my pedalboard plugged in to a power outlet that wasn't on the same ground as my amp... once I got that sorted out it was perfect....

I would definitely recommend this to anyone that wants an affordable, simple to use and great sounding wireless system that integrates to your pedalboard

Needs a firmware update for sleep

By Richard from Washington on October 31, 2018

If you are deciding between the Line 6 Relay G10 and Boss WL-50, the Line 6 goes to sleep when not in use while the Boss battery runs down if left plugged into the guitar. Otherwise they seem nearly identical in performance.

Being pedalboard powered, the WL-50 needs to be plugged in charge when not in use and means you need to power it separately from your pedalboard if you want to power off your pedalboard with a master switch. However, the transmitter has a micro-USB port so can charge it anywhere you have USB power to charge other devices.

I would like BOSS to issue a firmware update that allows the transmitter to sleep when there is no signal from the guitar so you can leave it plugged into the guitar jack just as I do with the Line 6 relay G10.

Almost perfect

By Ken Masten on May 24, 2022

Works great. Easy to use. Just wish they had designed the part that fits into the guitar to fold and stay closer to the guitar body itself.

Stable wireless in a convenient form factor

By BCBEAK on September 17, 2021

Have used the Boss SL-50 for many gigs big and small. It is far more stable than the Line6 2.6 ghz products that I have tried, with fewer dropouts near routers and FOH systems using the 2.6 ghz band. A great feature is the 1/4" jack for a fast wired connection if you run into trouble (always keep an instrument cable nearby). I am partial to these new wireless products with the transmitter that plugs directly into the guitar. The ones that attach by cable to a belt transmitter are less convenient when making fast stage changes. The base unit fits nicely on a pedal board, or tucked in the back of an amplifier. Only issue I have run into is running (2) WL-50 units near each other. You have to be sure to re-synch each transmitter to the base, otherwise it can lock onto the other unit. All in all ... solid performer. You still have to be aware of nearby routers and setup as far away from them as possible.

WL-50

By mathew j elser from locke, NY on January 9, 2024

The WL-50 is awesome, but...you can't use more than one in the same room. Even if you follow the instructions that came with it. Not happy about that at all! It says you can use multiple units. But no...no you can't.

Works well, but extremely susceptible to interference

By Steve Sisson from Wyoming on August 3, 2023 Music Background: More than 20 years in rock cover bands

I've had completely mixed results with this over the past two years. In some cases it has worked flawlessly for four hours. On others it hasn't worked at all... I've even had it work well on the first night of a 2-night gig, and be nothing but trouble on night two. It's happiest when there are no other wireless devices nearby, which is pretty rare on most stages. If you have a WiFi board or anything like that, you need to be a good 20 feet away from it, and if you have two of these on stage, it's almost a given that only one of them will work unless the stage is large and they are on opposite sides of it. When it does work, it's fantastic... completely unintrusive, imperceptible latency and more than adequate range, but my success rate with it has been less than 50%.

Great Wireless

By Chuck M from SD on April 16, 2022 Music Background: Playing Guitar

Great wireless system easy too use, no issues in the house and no interference from our in home router. I use it with my tube amps or my Helix floor, I like the 10' cable setting on the receiver the best. I don't know about being around other people with wireless system, since I haven't experienced that. I know of others that use it on stage with no issues. I will explain why I gave it a 3 rating. When I ordered this, I thought I could power the receiver off my power brick on my pedal board, which you can or 9v battery, but those will not charge the transmitter in the receiver, you have too buy the (Rolland PSA120S 9V 500MA power supply) this power supply has something in that works with the digital. I contacted my Sales Rep. Jordan Clohessey about this and he did his research through Boss and it was confirmed and they did change this on the listing of the WL-50 on the website Great service from Sweetwater

WL-50 Lackluster

By Tony Gagnon from CO on November 28, 2019 Music Background: Guitarist for Gary Russell Band

I made a trade for this a few months ago. The first few gigs seemed to be great. But as someone else said it started having issues due to other wireless systems in use. I noticed intermittent signal popping while not noticeable to the average person unless you really focus on it I could hear it constantly. There is also a volume issue with it due to other wireless systems including Wifi systems, wireless routers etc. I use a Sennheiser wireless in ear which never has any issues with other systems since I can select my frequencies manually.

Overall I am greatly disappointed with it. It works best when no other wireless system is present. I'll be looking into a different system

Issues Abound

By Paul Deyo from Altona, NY on June 22, 2023 Music Background: I have been playing bass on and off for over 20 years

I bought this unit a little over a year ago and right out of the gate I encountered issues with it. It was throwing a significant amount of feedback and providing signal even when my basses volume was turned all the way down. After contacting Rolands tech support I was informed that they have known issues with active pre-amp and pickup guitars and basses. I was told that they suggest adding a TSR 1/4" to 1/4" adapter to defeat the noise issues. While this did work, for the price, you would think I wouldn't need to add accessories to make it work as expected.

So a year in to using this unit and having overcome some weird issues out of the gate I play my first gig. Playing a small bar with 50-ish people in the place. To get out and mingle with the patrons, I start wondering away from my rig and no more than 20' from the pedal base I begin to cut in and out. Range, for me, was far less than the 65' as listed in the specs.

Not a bad unit if you have passive electronics and are using it in a small space or for practice, but wouldn't recommend for a live setting if you like to wonder around the stage or venue in general.

Line of Sight means Line of Sight

By Brian Nelson from San Antonio, TX on October 4, 2022

This device works as advertised. But only if line of sight is not broken. And I mean if your back is to the receiver as you work the stage, you WILL drop signal. So if you move and sometimes have your back to your pedalboard, do so with caution.

Interference

By Ken on October 21, 2019

What can I say? It works great as long as you're the only wireless user. Boss looses the battle in a 1v1. My signal started to cut in and out, and his stayed strong. I call my rep, Roq Martin, to return it. He was great! He went above and beyond to help me out. He suggested the Line 6 Relay G10s because you can select the frequency, and that's what was used that destroyed the Boss signal.
TLDR:
Any other wireless system user will kill your signal.

Great if used alone

By Sweetwater Customer on March 15, 2022

Sounds great by itself. When more than one unit is used or other wireless systems are used it simply doesn't work. Constantly getting interference from the other units. Followed all the docking instructions with no luck.

Worked Well Until It Didn't

By Sweetwater Customer from MI on December 20, 2021

I've owned this unit for about two and a half years and it's worked as expected for that time. Sound was relatively clean and range was acceptable.

Unfortunately the unit recently had some issues which is why I chose to come and write a review. Basically what happens is the base unit stops recognizing that the transmitter is plugged in. This causes two problems: first is the transmitter no longer charges, and second is that the unit will no longer perform it's auto channel search function that's intended to find the cleanest channel available for the room you're in. The transmitter can be charged with a USB B phone charger but this does nothing for the channel search function, which is a deal breaker for me.

After doing some online research, turns out that this is a problem that many have experienced with this wireless. I therefore chose the two star rating as Sweetwater denotes this as the "needs improvement" rating. I'm trying to be fair in that I did get 2.5 years out of the device, but I purchased it partially due to Boss' stellar reputation of building pedals that last forever (I have several boss pedals that are 20+ years old and still work great) and this unit clearly failed in that area. It seems clear that this is a design problem with the unit that causes the WL-50 to fail in this particular way for multiple customers. Maybe the most importing thing to be aware of when considering the WL-50 is that this pedal falls under Boss' 1 year warranty, not their 5 year warranty for compact pedals, even though it's made to the compact pedal form factor.

Overall, I would not buy this unit again.

Not built to last

By Eric from Danville Ca on March 30, 2021

Worked great for about 8 months - totally loved it aside from its footprint on pedalboard (where space is a premium) - then it just died. It appears to be fully charged but there is no output signal. I'd be interested if I got a fluke or if anyone else had problems with it after several months.

Product failed two weeks after warranty expired

By Franz Domotor from Norwalk, CT on February 17, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist

I normally don't write reviews but felt the need to in this case I am an avid boss supporter and have been using their products for 35 years without fail I own two of these units for two different systems unfortunately one has failed literally two weeks after the one-year warranty expired and it seems to be a common problem that this unit has. The docking station base no longer recognizes the transmitter when you put it into charge so not only does it no longer charge the transmitter but it also does not sync the transmitter with a channel which is a problem in itself I have seen online that many people have had the same issue and I'm rather surprised as boss generally makes really great stuff like I said I have boss pedals that are 35 years old that still work flawlessly unfortunately boss missed with this one

Lasted Ten Days Then...It Died!

By lawrence h breiden from Pennsylvania on October 16, 2019

Bought this based on Boss's reputation for quality. When I first got it I thought it was the answer to my prayers. No more belt pack! No more changing batteries! And it sounded awesome! Then, yesterday it started dropping out on me intermittently. When it did function it was low and muffled. Tried different guitars, amps, cables, power supplies, with and without pedals...all with the same discouraging results. Returned it for a refund. Looking at the Behringer AirPlay for about 40% of the price of this unit.
