The wireless works great for me. I only play my bass at home and being relieved of leads that get tangled around chairs and wound round my feet is a true blessing. Rock on.

Great wireless system!

By Jeff Dean from Berea, KY on March 15, 2023 Music Background: Worship leader guitar, vocals outdoor/ indoor ministry.

I love these Boss WL-20 transmitter and receiver. We do an outdoor music ministry and play/ lead worship at church. They have worked great. Our bassist uses the same model so at times we have to re-link them. But once they are linked they have not cross linked between the two. They have a great time with my acoustic and my electric guitars. Highly recommend these. I love Roland equipment especially the Boss.

Boss WL-20 System

By Sweetwater Customer on December 8, 2022 Music Background: Amateur

I purchased this system to get rid of the cord and be free to move around and not be worried about the cord. This system has worked flawlessly for me and the sound is just as good as being plugged into the amp. I really love it and I've never run out of power.

Great product, works like it says "BOSS"

By Jeffery Edge from Oxford, MS on October 6, 2022

Very well pleased, when plugged into my guitar it sounds as good as a cord. It's plug and play once it's charged, no contols just instant playing. Ordered it and received it in two days, very well packed and even a bag of candy. Sweetwater had done it again, they set a higher standard for customer satisfaction. My sales engineer, Tyler Henry is the best, he stated that this was a great product and it is. Again my hat's off to Tyler Henry and Sweetwater. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!

It does it's job and does it well

By Buzz Gohman from Bronte TX on May 11, 2021 Music Background: Praise and music ministry

The way I see it, this device's job is to make your guitar work with your amp without wires. It should be unobtrusive, it should be plug-and-play simple, and it should work every time without fail. That is what the Boss WL-20 does. Bring all your wireless connections up while the transmitter and receiver are connected together and let the device find an open channel. Plug them into the guitar and amp and you are good to go. Simple as that. Connection to my amp is now one less thing I have to think about before a gig. Nothing succeeds like success. Good job Boss.

Couldn't be any more pleased with the Boss wireless transmitters they work very well indeed. Once charged it's just plug and play no button or controls and the connection is instant and strong. Sweetwater sets a higher standard for product delivery and customer satisfaction, in my 40ish years I've not ever encountered a business that takes such care of the customers. Far from my last purchase from Sweetwater!

Boss WL-20 Digital Wireless Guitar System

By Laurent Soucie from Lodi, Wisconsin on August 12, 2020 Music Background: Singer/Songwriter/Musician

Sweetwater Sound Sales Engineer, Mitch Dazey, recommended the Boss Digital Wireless Guitar System to me last year for my electric and acoustic guitars. This system has made gig setups and performances so much easier without the hassle of stepping on cords.Just charge both transmitter and receiver as you would your cell phone and the system easily lasts longer than any gig.I plug the transmitter into my guitar input jack and the receiver into my effects processor. Then I'm good to go. The Boss Digital Wireless System works well when plugged directly into an amp or PA mixer.

Easy set up and sounds great!!

solid, no problems, and fun

By Chris from Dallas, TX area on June 19, 2020 Music Background: worship band musician and home recording enthusiast

I was recommended these by someone on a guitar amp group, and I've been loving them. No latency, good range, great sound, and decent battery life. I use them the most at home and on rehearsal night at church. I could use them on Sundays too, but I don't trust my church's other wireless gear and didn't want to risk interfering with it. The main cool use at home is that I can tweak various equipment around my music room and move freely without getting caught in cables. Also, paired with a Katana Mini on batteries, it's a great patio jam tool. The only negative, which is similar with most units, is that it won't fit into certain odd-shaped guitar input jacks. For me, it was great with my Strat, but I have an Iron Label Ibanez that it didn't fit. Luckily, I was able to by a small 1 foot extender cable from Sweetwater that solved that issue. I give it a thumbs up for sure.

Plug in and play! No wires. I've been playing almost 60 yrs. I still play out. I play every day. It doesn't get any easier than this. Can't use it on my Ibanez bass as the plug access on the guitar won't accept the plug. I use this with 2 Taylors, Strat, Ibanez Prestige and parlor, and NS Design NxT4. Works and sounds great. Easy to charge and carry.

SIMPLE & NO HASLE SET UP

By STGBLTZ from Anchorage AK on September 3, 2019 Music Background: Gospel music

I tried going wireless for the first time with the new Shure GLXD-16, And I was not at all impressed with the tone loss, however the Boss WL-20 suited my needs. I was very impressed by the tone and it sounds like my cable. Very simple and easy to set up.
If you play on a small stage as I at church then I would highly recommend it.

I"m very happy very impressed and makes playing even more enjoyable.

I'm happy so far!

By Phil from Tallahassee on May 19, 2019

Very easy to use and I've had no dropouts. I recently did an open jam where four other musicians were using wireless systems, three of which were different brands and the fourth was another WL-20. No problems at all.
The only issue is that you may need to put another washer or nut on your amp/effect pedal input jack to insure good contact with the little contact pin on the wireless receiver. This is no big deal and doesn't diminish the usefulness of quality of the unit.
So far, so good!

This is the easiest way to free yourself from cable tripping! It is quick and reliable... and for my use the 50" range is more than enough. Sound checks are a breeze when you can get off the stage and check the mix for yourself! I would recommend this Boss to anyone who plays small to medium venues like we do...I would think even larger in or outdoor gigs would have a place for the WL-20...Get one NOW!!!

Boss's Killer Wireless System!

By Swen Zell from Sound City on April 3, 2019 Music Background: Live/Studio Musician

Been playing professionally for 35+ years and have used numerous wireless guitar systems and most that cost far more than this new Boss WL-20. Totally blown away by the WL-20 system and have been using these since they first hit the market. Numerous shows and all kinds of venues and have never had an issue! I play numerous electric/acoustic guitars and electric mandolin live and I really dig how you can unplug the transmitter in performance and it automatically mutes the signal. No pops, shorting sounds, squeals, nothing...Totally quiet. Plug into next instrument just as quietly and paired within 5 seconds. Unfrickingbelievable!!

Technically the sound quality is very, very close to systems costing far more and it's ease of use factor is off the charts. Battery life is amazing and the form factor and charging system with a basic USB cable is stellar! No obscure wall warts or cables needed.

Disregard the few negative reviews below of which most don't even really apply since they are having issues with the physical "fit" of the transmitter and their instruments or the user is attempting to pair it with a device that has a TRS input connector. No piece of electronics made is going to work with every conceivable rig out there, but these should work with almost all.

Boss WL20

By Sweetwater Customer from California on January 15, 2019 Music Background: Gigging Musician

This thing is awesome, I don't know why all the bad reviews in the previous posts, but for me this thing has done wonders. Every member in my band uses these now as they are far easier than carrying a ton of cables these days. I will say however, that it changes the tone just a hair, and for me in a good way. It is quieter than a cable(Vovox, Klotz, Mogami) and cuts the highs just a minuscule amount. It still nonetheless expresses a tone from your guitar that is clear, transparent, and full within the band mix or whether playing alone. It also goes up to a fair distance, and it is fun to experiment the max distances where you can still be heard. I have used it for various gigs ranging from an hour to more than three hours without fail. The tone doesn't change as it looses battery life as well. I feel Boss knocked this one out of the park, and the only changes I'd make is probably either the size or perhaps a changeable battery.

Finally!

This has got to be as easy as it gets with a wireless guitar system! A battery operated, rechargeable, transmitter and receiver. No wires, no strap-pack, just charge, plug, and play. And it"s a BOSS product! And the price doesn"t "break the bank." And I can" Wait to use it this weekend.

Great system

By Gibson Fenderstrat from Virginia on August 19, 2018 Music Background: Full time pro. Retired military musician. BA in music.

Used it for the first time last night. Worked perfectly and sounded great. Left it on through breaks just to make sure the charge held up. No problem. First wireless I've owned in 30+ years of professional playing. The battery life is a bit of a drag, but for the price, ease of use and Boss name it is worth it if I have to replace it in a couple of years.

Highly Recommend

By Ronald Koch from Wadsworth, OH on August 16, 2018 Music Background: 50 plus years as a working musician, producer and sound engineer.

Got these yesterday (Aug 15, 2018), read the directions, charged them up and headed out to a our gig.

Now I'm mostly a bass player and I've tried numerous wireless systems over the years, but, unless you spend many, many hundreds of dollars, most do not have the band width to properly handle the low end of a 5 string. These worked perfectly. I did a quick comparison between wired and these and there was no discernible difference in tone or feel. Our sound man said he didn't have to change a thing on my bass channel ... a powerful recommendation!

Part of our set is just acoustic guitars (no drums, no bass). Making the transition has always been a bit of a hassle. With the Boss WL-20's, I merely unplugged the transmitter from my bass guitar and plugged it into my acoustic guitar. Then I moved the receiver from my bass amp to my Fishman acoustic amp. Easy, clean, fast and it worked perfectly. Also, I drive a couple of pedals (compressor and delay) in front of the input on the Fishman, so the receiver was plugged into the compressor and the delay wired to the amp input. Again, no discernible difference it tone, feel or quality. Impressed!

By far, these are the easiest, quickest and most hassle free wireless units I've used. The club has "free WiFi" and of course everyone has a smartphone these days. Between the neon lights, the massive speaker magnets and all the other RF Noise, I played these for over 4 hours and never experienced a drop-out or unwanted noise. Excellent!!

As for the LiPO batteries and their life time, every thing said is true ... however, to put that in perspective, your $700+ Smartphone probably uses non-replaceable LiPO batteries (.. that suffer from the same issues) and yet I'd bet that those issues were never a factor in deciding to purchase that very expensive piece of tech.

Bottom line:
These are a great piece of tech, they simplify my life and (so far) have done everything they said they would do.

One of the best purchase decisions I've made and I highly recommend these.

The Boss Wl-20 is what every kid guitarist dreamed of since angus yougn strapped on that famous satchel. 179.99? If the battery lasts the entirety of the 2 year warranty it was a purchase well made. Charge it up as soon as you get it and its plug and play from there. Great range and no damage to my guitars natural tone.

Boss Wireless

By Jeffrey Crook from Highland, IN on August 8, 2018 Music Background: Rock and Blues 43 years.

Already own the XVive and it works great but it would not work on one guitar I own out of 14. Bought the Boss hoping it would work on all my guitars and it does. Both the XVive and the WL 20 sound great. Both are very easy to use. Now I use the XVive from my pedal board to my amp and the Boss system from my guitar to the pedal board. I am completely wireless.

Super Sound - Super Easy

By David R from Humboldt County, Ca on July 30, 2018

I've only had these a few days, so I haven't field-tested them at an actual gig yet, but during practice sessions & just noodling around they're amazing! Doesn't matter if they're plugged into 60-watt Fender or a 10-watt Cube, the response is incredibly fast; the tone clear, & clean. So far, no conflict with other wireless systems either. Amazingly simple to setup & charge. Super easy, & fun to use.

Works as expected!.

Easy to use and sounds great!

By Brian from Las Vegas on August 22, 2023

Really easy to use, sounds great, and the battery life is good. It's nice to be able to play without worrying about the grandkids tripping over cables.

I had a problem with the first unit I received pairing. My sales engineer James Wroblewski and Sweetwater were really awesome taking care of it quickly. I texted James on a Sunday and he got back to me very quickly, got me in touch with the support team and they pulled a new one from stock, tested it, and offered to overnight it to me. I couldn't ask for better service. It's really nice buying from a company that stands behind their products and takes care of you when there is a problem.

Cut the cord with low latency

By Robert Gass from Upland, California on September 17, 2022 Music Background: I’ve played electric bass and double bass for many years in bands.

I've only used the WL-20 twice so far, with my bass guitar. The transmitter/receiver worked flawlessly; no drop-outs, hum, or discernible latency. I have not done a A/B tone comparison with the WL-20 versus cables. The receiver can go into an amp or a pedal. I've only wondered 20 feet away, so I can't comment on longer distances. The only negative is that the devices must be charged before each session or gig. The charge lasts hours, but not days. Keep a cable in your case as backup.

Works well and charges easily.

Love 'em, but...

By Manny from Cape Cod, Ma. on August 11, 2019 Music Background: 45 year pro

This product works perfectly, and I am thrilled with them, but... I just wish that they folded up, like almost every other product of this type does. I've only had them a few weeks, but I have already done several gigs with them, including 3 outdoor gigs. The gig yesterday ended in a rain storm, and they got soaked, but still work fine. A few days before that, a little kid stepped on the receiver, which was plugged into my pedalboard, and they survived that, as well. But they would not have been stepped on, if they folded up, and I always worry that the transmitter will get broken, because it sticks out so far from the guitar. I am constantly changing between sax and guitar, and I have to be more careful not to bang the thing. But I do love the fact that they have worked perfectly, easy to charge up, batteries easily last a full gig, shutting themselves off when not in use, and absolutely no interference with other wireless tools on the job.

Great for the price

By John Latch from Texas on August 26, 2018

Works well with acoustic & electric guitars. True sound & tone.

The only thing I would improve, is to have a 90 degree angle plug in the instrument receiver, so it doesn't hang out so much.

But all in all; well worth the money.

WL 20

By Robert Rodric from 30740 on August 23, 2018 Music Background: Guitarist..not professional

Used the WL 20 wireless system several times and it really performs . Latency is undetectable, ease of pairing and setup, a snap, and have experienced no loss of data transmission. I would not hesitate to use WL 20's on a big stage. Boss/ Roland has developed a device that has raised the bar on wireless systems. Looking at the WL 50 now. Great product, would buy again and recommend it to any of my musician friends..

Xvive vs. Boss? Boss hands down

By Sweetwater Customer on August 14, 2018

I was interested in a simple, small wireless solution that wouldn't break the bank so I got the Boss WL-20 and the Xvive and did a shoot out during a lazy tech rehearsal.

FORM FACTOR: I did like the Xvive form factor a bit more. The boss is beefier in size and doesn't have the swivel the Xvive does. However, that's the ONLY thing the Xvive has on the Boss unit

SOUND QUALITY: The Xvive had tons of bad sound issues. Lots of high microphonics. Just garbage. Both my venue techs were thrilled when I unplugged it. Then I tried the Boss and I was really impressed! Nice clear sound! Did it sound like a cable? Actually it's a little brighter and cleaner since there is no capacitance roll off. I will say it did have a SLIGHT high pitch hum that was only noticable when I wasn't playing and I turned my gate off. But I always use a gate so that's not a problem and my guitar has a stereo jack, not a mono jack so that may have contributed to hum. Besides that minor qibble it was great.

RANGE: The boss was great! definitely enough range for a decent size stage. It says 50 feet of range and I think they are right on the money. I started getting dropouts at maybe 60ish feet but I had to go around a wall to get that. With line of sight you could easily expect 50 ft, maybe more. The Xvive..... honestly it was so terrible sounding I didn't even do a range test. Yuck.

RELIABILITY: I've used 2.4g systems before and notice when the receiver/transmitter happened to be in close proximity to a WIFI source (phones, router, etc.) I'd get drop outs or other forms of interference. So with this test I tried to really throw it a curve ball. I purposefully placed a small travel router night next to the receiver. The Boss got a Warbly sound, almost like a tremolo but definitely not one you'd want in a show. The Xvive was worse. Crazy statics, ghost notes, dropouts. With wireless, you really do get what you pay for and these units are super cheap. I didn't expect zero interference. I do think the BOSS handled it better though because it only displayed the warble when the router was right on top of it where the Xvive had problems with more distance between the receiver and router.

CONCLUSION: Get the Boss. Is it a repalcement for a dope 400/500 megahertz system? Nope, but you shoudln't expect it to be. If you judge them on what they are trying to be, a small and inexpensive wireless solution, then the BOSS is a great choice. I only took of a half a star because of the slight hum in the high end but again, throw on a gate and you'll never hear it.

One more thing. I have a stereo output from my guitar and since this has a TRS plug I was hoping maaayybbbee this would receive/transmit stereo..... but it doesn't. Wasn't too upset about that though since it wasn't advertised at all.

no more cables

By Jeremy C from Maine on November 9, 2022 Music Background: multi- instrument player and part time guitar and drum tech

Best wireless of this variety - except for one thing

By Robin Cox from Upstate New York on March 4, 2021 Music Background: Lifelong musician

I've tried other wireless units in this category and the latency in the Boss WL-20 is far better. Minus 2ms latency vs. -6ms latency is a big deal. I would notice -6 on my fist note, but after that playing wasn't an issue, but I knew it was there. With the WL-20, I experience no latency whatsoever.
What I don't like about this unit is the "cable emulation". I have never experienced high end loss like this with any cable. With Strats and teles I don't notice it, but with a Les Paul I notice the high end cut immediately. I have since adjusted to the high end cut tonal cut on all instruments, but if I had it to do over, I'd buy the Boss WL-50, it's just $21 more, but you can cut out the "cable emulation".

Great for Rehearsal

By Blano from New England on March 2, 2021 Music Background: Orchestra to pit bands, rock, blues, big band

I've had these dongles for about two years now. I was unfortunately unfaithful to Sweetwater and had a GAS itch during a trip to Nashville and ordered the system from a competitor (that has customer service nowhere as great as Sweetwater's Customer Care). I'm sorry Sweetwater!

After I finally got this wireless system, charged it and plugged it in at home it was amazing. I was really blown away! I have a 'big' wireless system that I was using for gigs and I figured if I could downsize, why not, right? First gig was a resturaunt. Got there, set up - long story short, my signal got crappy about four bars into the first set. I re-mated the receiver and transmitter - same result. Fast forward a year, I talked to the Boss folks at NAMM about my issues with this system. They told me the unit was not really designed for gigging, it was more of an 'informal' wireless system. So... I use this for home practice and rehearsals and it's great for that. As far as gigs, I'll be using the Shure wireless system (which I DID purchase from Sweetwater ) which has been amazing on the road!

To be sure, this is a cool product, but if there is minimal interference from a router or anything else, it was my experience that the signal got really spotty really fast.

Good option

By Sweetwater Customer on September 17, 2020

Great option for clearing out a spahgetti laden small studio floor of cables. Its been nice not tripping over cables and the freedom to move around is great. There may be a slight degradation of tone, I just have'nt quite decided yet.sometimes it seems so and at other times not so much. All and all its worth it.

GIGGING REVIEW

By cristian donald from FL on March 25, 2019

Used this product twice this weekend both at outdoor shows.....It performed reasonably trouble free.
A few times the signal was broken up and the blue signal light was blinking but only for a second or two.
Also I unplug my bass during break so I had to re pair the device every time I plugged back in (took less than 10 seconds)
Other than those few issues i really like this...especially at the price point

Attention Ibanez Guitar Users

By Andre from Fayette IA on February 28, 2019

As an Ibanez guitar / bass user, the flushed input jack DOES NOT have ample space to fit the transmitter entirely (modifications required to push the input jack a bit further out of the hole). Other than that, fantastic piece of modern technology!

Ibanez owners beware!

By Chris on September 29, 2018 Music Background: Working Musician

This system is absolutely fantastic. The only issue I have is that it doesn't fit into the recessed jacks on my Ibanez Jem, Universe and S series guitars. I'm hoping to find something to attach to the end, either a rigid male to female 1/4 or perhaps a short (really short) cable with male on one end and female on the other. It works great with all my other guitars that have more or less standard jacks. This may be a deal breaker because one of the guitars it doesn't fit happens to be my #1.

Boss WL-20

By Rob from Troy, MI on August 13, 2018

The product works great when it maintains a positive connection with your instrument, amp or pedal. It doesn't work with my Polytune 3 though (first pedal on my board) or my Fender HM Strat. Fortunately I have other guitars and it works just fine with them and I can put another pedal first in my chain as a work around. As always Sweetwater and Ed Nystrom's customer service is second to none.

The Good and the bad

By Barrie Dempsey from McMinnville, OR on April 18, 2022

First off, I'm just trying to get rid of one wire when I take my electric to my one man show. I use a looper and record my Jam Man (loaded with my custom rhythms) along with my acoustic guitar playing chords. Then I play flute or leads and slide with my electric. So I will keep a USB cable connected to power the receiver at my peddle board because it ran out of juice the first time I used it. (I Trade one wire for another). I bought "Boss" because I trust the name and still do but, I don't know why the receiver can't keep a charge for a lousy 3 hours.
Sweetwater rocks however.***** Thanks Jeff.

Out of the box this thing works great. However, I discovered an interesting kink that our friends at Sweetwater are investigating: When plugged into my Cry Baby Wah (first pedal in chain) it works perfectly UNTIL I switch on the wah, then there is no sound - the transmitter/receiver connection is not a problem, but the receiver > wah doesn't work. I suspect the issue is the TRS plug connection to the wah. Using a TRS > TS adapter doesn't fix it. I'll post back when Sweetwater and Boss let me know what they find.

Ok But Not what I Expected

By UNK from Washington DC on April 2, 2023 Music Background: Bass Player/ Jass/ Gospel/ R&B / specialty is Playing GOGO Music 22yrs.

I bought the Boss Wireless system and it Did not stand up to my expectations, and maybe it's the way I am using it, I play for a GOGO BAND and it's has more of the Heavy Metal feel and when I attack my Bass it Clips out and I can tell that it's wireless cause the sound drops. probably better for Jass, or R&B.

Incredible

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and I don't know why I didn't buy it sooner. This product is wonderful, freedom and perfect sound, I recommend it to everyone!

won't do everything I need

By Sweetwater Customer on March 3, 2021

I can not get the transmitter to continuously function when connected to the output of a pedal, mixer or fx processor. It will carry the signal for 3 min then it goes into standby mode.

So let's say you have two sets of receivers and transmitters and you use the first transmitter in the guitar, all good so far, receiver #1 into the fx chain, still good, transmitter #2 to output of fx chain/mixer/processor, good for 3min then standby kicks in, not good.

Bottom line is the only way to get a transmitter to work properly is to plug it into a guitar.

So I check to see if my Line6 G10 transmitter can work with these same units outputs, works perfectly.

Good, but NOT perfect

By Greg from South Carolina on March 8, 2019 Music Background: 30+ year player, semi-pro, actively gigging and recording

I've been using this for many months, mainly live gigs and rehearsal. I was using an all digital rig and sometimes using my setup as backline, IEMs, FOH feed the whole gamut. I recently switched to a tube amp and was using the WL20 exclusively. I thought something was OFF with the amp, it's a Marshall Mini Jubilee and the overdrive was very harsh, not pleasing at all. I tried a ton of different things, all different volumes, etc.
Finally I really started to pay attention to signals, noise, noise reduction, etc. I also play a pretty bright Tele that adds to all of the above. Long story short, the WL20 is a major contributing factor to a very unpleasant high end and shallow / frail / hollow mids on the overdrive channel of the amp. I can compensate but rolling off presence and treble, but the fact is straight in with a cable is the TONE I expect.
One positive for the WL20 is that it actually decreases extraneous noise from the guitar in my rig (which is already grounded properly) and it's significant vs. a cable.
Overall, I really like the unit and simplicity and it has been very solid live. I will continue to use it for both electric and acoustic live shows, but now I know exactly what to look out for and how to try and compensate.
Great deal for the money.

Doesn't hold up like other Boss Products

By TomS from DeSoto on January 5, 2023 Music Background: Acoustic performer/ singer

Hasn't charged correctly for over year, sometimes it charges sometimes it doesn't, nothing like finding out at the job. Works Great when it works. I expect more from Boss equipment.

Receiver has SAD battery life!

By ellis whitley on November 24, 2020

If fully charger the receiver that plug into amp MIGHT do a 4 hr show. I unplug it from amp during breaks or it won't last 4-5 hours during setup and show. Also will not charge if fast enough if you were to have two shows in one day. DON'T forget your guitar cable....

Sounds great, WHEN it works.

By Don R from Great Falls, Montana on February 9, 2019 Music Background: String slinging in all genres since the 80's.

I love the idea of this thing, and in my opinion it is designed and implemented well. The sound is great, and i made sure to really compare plugged/wireless tones as best as i could.

The main problem for me, and what caused met o return it was that the signal would disconnect/reconnect repeatedly. It would sound like your guitar signal would drop in and out on its own. I'm not sure what caused this, as i turned off anything electrical/wireless that i could find in the house.

I REALLY wanted to keep this, but could not go even a full 60 seconds without signal loss. If you are one of the lucky ones who experience no technical problems, then yes, this item is very well worth getting.

I however, am still surfing the Sweetwater website for something else.

Boss wireless guitar transmitter

By Bill Preston from Brighton, MI on August 22, 2023 Music Background: 40+ years performing and pleasure guitar playing

This product has a poor battery life. For a $ purchase, I feel the limited life of only one year is disappointing at best. Also, the product cannot be repaired or new battery installed. Basically it is a disposable product. I would not recommend it for the price of $.

Boss WL Wireless Guitar System

By Cory from Marathon Florida on November 16, 2020 Music Background: Full time, touring, recording musican

I didn't have high or unrealistic expectations, however over the past almost two years I've had countless disappointing results. I would say this makes a fun little practice tool or convenience for things that don't matter, however even that is disrupted by the lack of functionality. I don't live in a particularly frequency noisy part of the country. I live on an island, I play on beaches, tiki bars etc. Any routers, WIFI or bluetooth signals, basically all the things that surround us daily interrupt the signal causing garble, underwater sounds. I'd love to say it's infrequent, but the fact is it's almost impossible to use even for practice, nothing breaks your vibe like your signal garbling when you're trying to jam to your favorite solo. I gave up gigging with this even for small gigs where I'm 3ft away from the receiver, even on an island, the places have wifi and that's enough to make this not for gigs. As mentioned above practice is even frustrating sometime. My favorite use for this is taking into a guitar shop and being able to plug and play instruments and amps without asking for a cable ;-)

Worked Great Until It Didn't

By Michael Ciano from Whitman, MA on November 19, 2018 Music Background: Professional

I'll start by saying I absolutely loved the WL-20 for its non-existent footprint and undetectable latency. I wasn't crazy about the receiver sticking out of the guitar but I was willing to live with it. The using worked flawlessly for 3 months... until the day it JUST STOPPED PAIRING. For no clear reason, the receiver and transmitter just stopped seeing each other. They both still charge, both LEDS indicators are green but just simply will no longer pair. It failed ON A GIG, which is extra irritating. We'll see what the warranty handles. I may be willing to give it another chance just for the convenience of thew form factor.

No Battery Life

The "as advertised" 12 hour battery life, I find to be two hours. I am in the process of an exchange or a return.

Pop and done

By Richard H. Cromer from Cutler, Indiana on May 3, 2019 Music Background: Just a self taught guitar player enjoying the jams in the area.

I've had mine for a while and used it while in Florida with my small battery powered Peavey amp just for practice from time to time and was very happy with how it performed. No wires to stumble over. Now home from Florida and able to use it on a bigger amp which I did not have in Florida. Got my telecaster out and plugged Boss WL-20 into my Fender Frontman Reverb amp played a couple minutes and I heard a pop and that was the end of my wireless system. Amp still works fine but no receiver to plug into the amp as it is done. Maybe the reverb amp had something to do with it. I now must go back to my Line 6 Wireless which I have no problem with doing. Not happy with the Boss WL-20 System any longer. Won't even try to replace it. Would be too much hassle I suppose. Buy at your own risk.

No Battery Life

By Ray on December 8, 2018

I purchased a Boss guitar WL-T wireless from Sweetwater. The "advertised" battery life was SO far off, I exchanged it for another. The replacement was just as bad. Not only can"t the batteries not be replaced, but they only last a couple of hours per charge, not the 12 hours as the manufacturer states. In my opinion, Boss introduced this way too early and early adopters are disappointed guinea pigs. As a person with two bad experiences, I would warn people to stay away from this product. It has been a huge disappointment.

Not Good

By Sweetwater Customer on September 5, 2018 Music Background: Experienced

This worked well for about the first 3 weeks after receipt. Since then, the transmitter is sporadic - sometimes it will connect with receiver, other times it will just not connect. It's too unreliable, both for practice and live performance, and there are no changeable batteries so you really have no way to fix on your own. I'm returning the product and demanding my money back.

Waste of money

By Frank Welter from Toledo Ohio on August 30, 2023

Receiver battery had very little life even when new.
Used very little over a couple years and the receiver won't even charge. Transmitter button too short and won't work on many guitars.
Don't waste your money

Crapped out once again

By Barrie Dempsey from McMinnville, OR on August 17, 2023 Music Background: Giging singer/songwriter

On a gig and wanted to have fun with my Boss WL-20 guitar wireless. I had charged both receiver and transmitter a full day and a half before but when I went to use it the red light was flashing on the receiver and would work. I even had a USB charge on it at the gig. Still wouldn't work. I tried syncing the two together and thought maybe that was the problem. Nope. Ended up using a cable. Next day using it at home working so far.

Don’t go there

By George from Nashville on November 25, 2022 Music Background: 50 years of rock and roll

Bought this system because I'm a Boss fan, I own many Boss pedals that work great. This product works until it won't stay charged or won't charge at all. Went through 2 before I threw in the towel. I would give this 1/8 of a star if that was an option. Sweetwater took care of me on this because they always do. Got a Shure system that runs on AAs. When the battery dies on the Boss it's game over. #anythingbut

Worst System Ever!

By Sweetwater Customer from CA on May 24, 2022

Since the first time I used this system, I've been disappointed. BOSS should know better. This system simply doesn't work. I stand 4 feet from the receiver, and it's a constant battle to keep a consistent signal. It's incredible!

This is rubbish…..

By Arun Seetharam from Coral Springs, FL on November 4, 2021 Music Background: Long time guitarist

I have been using this since a year……the only good part of this is the battery life. Otherwise very annoying. The transmitter and receiver keeps breaking and it can not function normally if there is an obstacle between the transmitter and the receiver. Starts breaking again.

And $ for this? That's just rubbish, There are much better ones at half the price. Like line 6.

Does not work where there is WiFi around - and WiFi is ubiquitous - so what's the point?

By Jon from Washington DC on September 19, 2020 Music Background: Very famous in my apartment

I really wanted this to work but it constantly drops signal every few seconds, making this useless. Roland/Boss's response is that it doesn't work well where there is WiFi around. But WiFi is everywhere - so what's the point?

Boss WL-20 Wireless Guitar System

By Sweetwater Customer on March 21, 2020

Bought one and after paying found out it was on backorder. Took about 6 weeks to get it delivered. I tried on on my Fender Blues Junior with tele and Taylor acoustic, through the PA with Taylor, through Baggs Para DI through PA with Taylor and with passive Fender Jazz Bass through Aguilar amp and cab. Much signal loss even sitting right on top of the units. I would not waste my time with this rig. The clerk at store said a lot of them are being returned and recommended Xvive due to many satisfied customers.

NO BATTERY REPLACEMENT

By Sweetwater Customer on August 9, 2018

The unit itself is OK and a convenient size however, after contacting Boss a few times they finally admitted the batteries are NOT replaceable and don't know the battery life would be they emailed me back and said I quote:

"The WL-20 Manufacturer Warranty is for 1 Year Parts 90 Days Labor.
If you have an issue with the WL-20 Battery within Manufacturer Warranty Terms then it can be serviced/replaced by our Roland Boss Factory Service Department.
We unfortunately can't provide you with the information regarding how long the unit will last this may change and may differ depending on usage."

In my internet research I found this information again I quote:

"The typical estimated life of a Lithium-Ion battery is about two to three years or 300 to 500 charge cycles, whichever occurs first. One charge cycle is a period of use from fully charged, to fully discharged, and fully recharged again."
Also I quote:
"If the voltage of a lithium-ion cell drops below a certain level, it's ruined. Lithium-ion batteries age. They only last two to three years, even if they are sitting on a shelf unused. So do not "avoid using" the battery with the thought that the battery pack will last five years".

This means when the WL-20 won't hold a charge anymore after the warranty period you have buy a new one. These are one shot devices and I am disappointed at this. I might try to return it and continue to use my current wireless. With replaceable batteries.
