Rode VideoMic Me-C USB-C Directional Microphone for Smartphones Reviews

Smartphone Cardioid Condenser Microphone with 20Hz-20kHz Pickup, USB-C Port, Mounting Clip, and Windshield

For location shooting to casual vlogging, the Rode VideoMic Me-C USB-C Directional Microphone for Smartphones can dramatically improve your camera audio. Its low-noise, 20Hz–20kHz aluminum pressure gradient, electric cardioid condenser faithfully captures sources directly in front of the mic. It also rejects ambient noise, which makes it perfect for noisy environments in which onboard mic audio can get drowned out. Application couldn't be simpler — simply plug the USB-C connector into your smartphone, mount with the included clip, and enjoy cleaner audio and more intelligible dialogue when shooting from the front or rear. A 3.5mm headphone output lets you monitor audio as you shoot for dependable results on the go, and a WS-9 furry windshield is included for crystal-clear audio captures in any environment. Capturing share-worthy camera audio from your mobile device doesn't get much easier than with the Rode VideoMic Me-C from Sweetwater.

high quality recording

By michael from Maryland on December 26, 2021 Music Background: guitarist and hobbie studio guy

The Rode VideoMic Me-C USB-C Directional Microphone for Smartphones is just what I was looking for :) The quality of my smartphones mic is ok, but when connected to the Rode Videomic is now outstandind. Easy to use right out of the box, my videos sound has improved dramatically ! It came with a added windshield, perfect for outside recording. Rode also has a recording app as well to further control the parameters and save recordings to a library ! Smartphone video must have :)

Improves Audio Quality of Your Phone 10-Fold

By Shravan Amin from VESTAL, NY on November 9, 2021

Title says it all. I use this for self-tape auditions and I don't have to worry about any lav mic wires and rustling noises from hooking it to my shirt. This thing picks up audio perfectly and rejects any other background noise pretty well, which is great if you're in an echo-y room.

Keep in mind the design doesn't go well with a case (the USB-C doesn't go all the way in). It still fits and registers as connected to my phone but it doesn't give you that "click" that it's in place completely. I actually got a USB-C female to USB-C male extender from Amazon that solves this problem. Otherwise it would have gotten full five stars.

I highly recommend for actors.

Rode VideoMic Me-C

By Bruce Veillette from Easthampton, MA on February 1, 2022 Music Background: Organist/VJ

I originally purchased the ME-C for my new Samsung A32 phone for video & audio. (Not
just audio)
After a lot of emails, back and forth with Rode & FiLMiC (A Pro video app), the conclusion
was that the VideoMic Me-C will only work on my Samsung A32 with the basic provided
camera app. The Samsung A32 has it's own headphone jack, but is disabled when the
VideoMic Me-C is connected to the phone's USB-C forcing you to use the jack on the rear
of the mic.

Pros:
• Good sound quality for the price.
• Make sure your phone is one of the ones tested with the VideoMic Me-C so that it will also work with a Pro Video App.

Cons:
• Make sure to update the mic software or you may be in for a distorted surprise.
• You will need to remove your case, as it does not fit with even the thinnest of cell phone
cases.
• The VideoMic Me-C will only work on my Samsung A32 with the basic provided camera app.
• Even though the Samsung A32 also has a headphone jack, it is disabled when the VideoMic Me-C is connected to the phone's USB-C.
• Make sure your phone is one of the ones tested with the VideoMic Me-C so that it will also
work with a Pro Video App.

Conclusion:
Good price and good sound quality.
All Rode would need to do is use a switching jack on the rear of the mic so when you don't
plug in there, it will revert back to the phones headphone jack.
So, for me this will be used as a back-up. ( See my review Zoom H1n)

Important: UPDATE FIRMWARE in Rode Reporter app

By Joseph from California on November 18, 2021

The first time I plugged the ME-C into my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy A71), the built-in camera immediately connected to it. I recorded some test videos with and without the ME-C plugged in and the difference was like night and day. I did a test Instagram Live with the ME-C and this also sounded great. However, after recording a longer video, I imported the file into my editing software and half of the audio was distorted... mind you, I had headphones connected to the ME-C during the entire recording and everything sounded fine at the time. SUPER DISAPPOINTING.

Luckily, I came across this video on YouTube – youtube.com/watch?v=nYJBmWL8Hjg – that said the distortion can be fixed by updating the firmware.

In a nutshell: Download the RODE Reporter app, plug in the ME-C, click on "Settings", and click on "Firmware update available 2.1.1". An "Update Complete" notification should come up.

Now that the firmware has been updated, I'm going to record a longer test to make sure the distortion doesn't happen again... we'll see!
