From Our Research Team:

Super-Slim Home Monitors with Surprisingly Flat Response!

The TASCAM VL-S21 monitor system uses radically different loudspeaker technology to provide full-range sound from super slim speakers! VL-S21 monitors are an ideal solution for desktop monitors next to your computer screen or anywhere else space is tight.

TASCAM VL-S21 Monitor System at a Glance:
  • Affordable monitors with great sound
  • Revolutionary NXT technology drivers
  • Flat frequency response ideal for music

Affordable monitors with great sound
The TASCAM VL-S21 monitor system is different from many "affordable" speakers - it doesn't compromise sound quality for price! The VL-S21 sounds great whether the speakers are on your desktop, beside your keyboard workstation, or even mounted on the wall. This self-powered satellite system provides 5 watts per channel to the desktop speakers and 15 watts to the ported subwoofer. The VL-S21 desktop speakers are also remarkably thin, allowing these stylish speakers to be used anywhere at home or in the studio.

Revolutionary NXT technology drivers
The VL-S21's left and right speakers use special NXT technology drivers for full-range sound in a thin driver package. This approach improves on the traditional woofer-plus-tweeter design by eliminating the phase cancellation that occurs when using multiple drivers and crossovers. A single NXT driver covers a wider frequency range than traditional drivers. NXT technology drivers help the VL-S21 system provide wider dispersion, more uniform loudness and reduced room interaction than competing technologies.

Flat frequency response ideal for music
Unlike multimedia speakers designed for listening to MP3s and video games, the VL-S21 was designed with a flat frequency response for critical listening and mixing. They're ideal for home recording studios, practicing with TASCAM CD Trainers, or monitoring desktop and laptop computer recording systems. Created for musicians who need for an affordable speaker system that doesn't take up a lot of desk space, the VL-S21 is an excellent entry-level monitoring solution.

Tascam VL-S21 Features:
  • Dual satellite speakers and a subwoofer
  • 5W per channel to the Left/Right channels
  • 15W to the sub

Tascam VL-S21

I bought this speaker system after reading a good review in Tape Op several years ago. I had previously used a set of powered TEAC speakers that were not really suitable for monitoring.

... read more [+] I really disliked the VL-S21 at first--I felt they were very lacking in midrange and treble detail. After moving to a new apartment I tried setting them up differently.

Previously the satellite speakers had been about a foot apart, and I ran the volume control on the Tascams very low. This time I set the satellites about 3.5 feet apart and turned the volume on the amp up all the way. This really changed my perception of the sound: suddenly there was much more detail and clarity.

Since that time I've listened to a lot of music on them and I use them when recording. When I'm going out of town for the weekend I'll take the Tascams and my iPod, and while they don't put out like a PA system, they fill a medium sized room with enough OOMPH to get people dancing. I've had musician friends do a double take after walking into the room and expecting to see a larger system.

I haven't heard other speakers in this price range that have such a broad sweet spot and no phase weirdness in the midrange (due to the lack of separate mid/high drivers/crossover). It's very easy to place the thin satellites to minimize reflections.

Of course they're not perfect but I haven't heard speakers I'd want more in the under $200 range. They're cheap and portable--I'd like to get a couple more sets, one for a backup and one to give as a gift. close [-]

If you're on a budget

I've had these for about a year now. When I first got them I was blown away by the stereo width and stage depth these things have compared to regular computer speakers. There is a good amount of det... read more [+]ail in the sound quality, especially at the top end, however the bass is quite muddy. I mixed an album on these (which I wouldn't recommend) and then took my mixes to another studio and listened to them on Mackie HR624's. The Mackie's revealed a lot of detail that I didn't hear on the VL-S21's and I noticed that I had mixed the bass much too heavy on every track. I wouldn't recommend these for studio work, but for things like watching DVD's on your computer or listening to MP3's these are great for the money. close [-]
