Great little box for oracticing

By Rich from Alabama on January 5, 2018 Music Background: played guitar 30 years, hard rock vocalist and frontman, former professional DJ

Firstly I want to thank Chris from Sweetwater.... amazing service.
Now for the trio..... it doesnt come with a manual but it can be downloaded online... I found it perfectly fine to understand and follow... I was making rhythms in minutes. I tried it before the firmware update and after.... the bass has definately been improved.... but only if they could have somehow got a metal selection on there too. However thats the only negative. I found the sound quality to be perfectly ample for practice... I also plugged a vox amplug 2 to the headpne out.... then plugged my headphones into the amplug.... ...the trio is just amazing really... and another $40 for the amplug... got a really great way to practice...
I found the unit very responsive to the string rhtym I played.... and although I missed the footswitch to stop the recording.... the result didnt show that.... the machine 'tidied' it all up.
you cabt go wrong with this. Ok its not recording quality drumming.... but its great for what it does well...... and thats a cracking little practice drum box

Fantastic Pedal

By Dwaine from Mt. Vernon, OH on December 4, 2017 Music Background: 50+ years, various bands throughout

There isn't much more anyone can say about this pedal. Just read the reviews. Everyone has nailed it! Easy to use, great for practicing and developing your musical aspirations. A pedal I will use everyday in conjunction with a RC3 looper, mixer and 8 track recorder.

Amaizing little trio

Could not believe the quality of this little pedal. Great options for bass and drum loops pre-built into the product. Super easy to use out of the box. Can't beat the price.

Just buy it

By Mickey on November 28, 2017

I got it outa the box. Laid down a quick little ditty and recorded into my Tascam DR-05 handheld recorder. Uploaded the file on my computer. Played it back thru an amp with stereo input adding lead guitar. Dumped onto computer. Repeated with keyboard. Sounds great! I've got a multi-track setup with these two little devices! No signal loss.

At this price - just buy it!

Easy practice

By Jazz junky from NYC on May 26, 2017 Music Background: Pro

I love this pedal!! I have been playing gigs for 30 years and always wanted to be able to practice looping chords without having to fire up my laptop. I know..it's not as flexible or creative like a band in the box, logic, garage band and it's not as flexible like the trio plus-obviously.. you can't save it to a SD card, it doesn't have this and that etc etc..but it so easy and fast to get to,that I can take this thing anywhere and just jam. It's also really cool that you can compose and switch between 3 sections of a song. I have an old looper I connected it to so I can add some chords to the loops and save them..just in case.I don't consider this device as a stand alone gig worthy backup machine. Theses loops are not gonna cut it, but for practice and songwriting? This can do A LOT! For real...

LOVE THIS PEDAL!

By Dale Crockett from London, OH on May 14, 2016

Another great Digitech creation. This pedal is a GREAT tool for practicing, and for songwriters as well. Not designed for "live" applications, but that's okay with me. I also have the Digitech JamMan 2 Stereo Looper, and I've got the Trio hooked up to the JamMan. That way, I can teach the Trio my chord progression, and then play along with it while creating a loop on the JamMan. Doing it this way would enable me to make some pretty simple but decent background tracks to some songs. I would suggest that if you buy this pedal, spend the extra $40 and get the FS3X Footswitch to control it. That way, you can have the Trio pedal up on the table or chair in front of you to easily tweak the genres, styles, etc. The only negative is that they didn't include an owners manual with it. But, you can easily find it online and download it.

Wonderful Practice Tool!

By Dan Smith from Utah on March 1, 2016

Been playing with my Trio pedal for a while now, and it's been amazing as a practice tool. After years of being a rhythm guitarist, I decided to start learning leads. With this pedal I can lay down a chord progression... any progression I want, in any key, and it will supply a bass line and drums that I can solo to. I've also used it for showcasing new riffs I've come up with and what they'd sound like in a band mix. It's an amazing pedal, especially for the price. LOVE it! Would absolutely recommend this to a friend.

TRIO

By Sweetwater Customer on January 17, 2016

I really like the Trio it is just what I was looking for.. I hook it up to my loop box and create my own tunes with bass, rhythm, keyboard and lead guitar its great for practicing or just making your own Jam sessions

Fun!!!!!

By J. from PA on January 15, 2016

I ve had the Trio for a while. It s excellent!! I ve taught it original songs that I ve written and a few covers too. I gave it 5 stars but there s a few things Digitech can do to improve upon this very cool n fun pedal. The main thing is they could add an SD card slot to save all the different rhythm ideas that the Trio and it s user come up with. This would make the Trio ideal. Imagine having an SD card filled with original songs or covers (bass n drums) and taking the Trio out in a public forum. Hours of entertainment!! As it is right now, it s a great pedal for playing at home or in your studio.

Band In a Box

This Effects Pedal is GREAT! It is fun to use and really helps my practice time to be more efficient and productive. There are so many combinations you can set up to maximise your learning ability to help you become more proficient on the guitar. It is a GREAT invest especially if you don't have the means of having other musicians to jam or rehearse with. I HIGHLY recommend this product.

This is going to be fun!

Just As Described................

By Paul Lemmer from Englewood, CO on December 18, 2015 Music Background: Experienced Semi-Pro Player and Vocalist.

Mine arrived only a week ago so I haven't been able to spend much time with it yet but I did want to say that it is everything that DigiTech promotes it to be. There's little sense in anyone criticizing the realism of the bass or drum tracks. They aren't for producing a recording so they're sufficient for the purpose. It's a practice tool or something to use to write or arrange a song around and when used for those purposes it does just fine. Actually even a little better than just fine. The amount of variation and control of genre, style, tempo, and even the volume of the bass and drum playback provides all that I can conceive of needing at the moment but DigiTech has also equipt it with a USB port to accommodate future updates or upgrades via downloads.

The build quality is top shelf (it's both sturdy and surprisingly heavy) and the proper power supply is included all very nicely and neatly packaged. By all means buy the FS3X Foot Switch as well. Some may criticize me if I said that is was essential so I'll just say that I would become frustrated very quickly if I didn't have it. It's much easier to place the pedal on a table, music stand, or the top of your amp so you can control and adjust the settings more conveniently and use the foot switch to operate the "learn" and "playback" modes.

As always the service from my rep Ian McGhee and the order processing and delivery were also top shelf. Now if they'd just list Bit-O-Honeys under accessories so I could order those in bulk I'd be the happiest customer on the planet. LOL

Score!

By Candid_X from Arizona on December 8, 2015 Music Background: Played in concert bands and orchastra, professional big band jazz and combos since age 14, a touring singer/song writer, now retired.

I love this little Trio. It’s a marriage of human input and teaching and prerecorded real time studio musicians in an ingenious piece of equipment. It’s a perfect device for someone like me, who no longer has the youthful energy to form or join a real band but can still jam creatively at home, and with help of a couple of mics and an inexpensive interface, and a free downloaded recording program, can produce some enjoyably creative sessions. It’s a wonderful era we live in. To create a simple piece like this, only a couple decades ago would have cost thousands of dollars, and dealing with band mates who never show up on time, and a drummer who can’t keep an unwavering tempo. And yet it doesn’t sound the least bit android or mechanical. Quite amazing. At 70, I'm still able to enjoy my favorite past time and keep my interactive neurons firing. Imo own experience, it beats playing over prerecorded backing tracks because I can also create the backing tracking tracks.

I strongly second the statement that learning how to teach the Trio your desired backing is a very important element in getting the most from it. KISS applies: keep it simple. Weird as it seems, in addition to being able to modify the resulting tracks by genre and style, this incredible little device seems somehow so intuitive, once the fundamental progressions are understood by the program, that it responds more like a live band rather than prerecorded bundle of bits and clips. Downright scary at times how it seems to change with the your own temperament and groove.

Thanks to Ken, my SW rep, for his knowledgeable assistance and recommendations, which inspire me to keep on playing, creating and recording new music.

DIGITECH TRIO BAND CREATOR

By Richard Jones from Winston-Salem, NC, USA on October 29, 2015 Music Background: 67 years

The Digitech Trio Band Creator is the practice partner/trainer I've been needing to help me learn and sharpen my skills. It works just as well with keyboard or guitar. Its a very simple pedal to operate, yet produces remarkable results. The Trio Band Creator reads, analyzes and produces bass and drum accompaniment in 7 different genres, 12 different styles per genre, in double- or half-time, in 3/4 and 4/4 time. My humble thanks to DigiTech and Sweetwater.

Digitech trio best yet

By Mike weaver from Myrtle beach sc on September 22, 2015

Digitech has a home run.!! I bought this pedal because i play solo . Alot of the time.. with this pedal i can have a backup band that always knows how to " fill in " with what im playing. When i find a chord progression i like i hook up my boss rc 30 looper to my digitech and loop my progression. That way i save it. I bought the fs3x foot switch with the pedal it makes using the digitech so much easier to use. When you buy your pedal down load the manual so you get full use of your new digitech pedal. You wont be disappointed. You can also download your progressions to your computer and save them. When you hook up to your amp run it as clean as possible in order to avoid distorting the drums.the drums an bass are pre-eq'd to sound best through a clean amp with typical e q settings. And have fun. Do take the time to down load the manual it's 28 page's but well worth it.wish i'd had one of these year's ago.!!!!

Perfect for Practice

Initial Impressions

By Fifthstone from Hartford on August 20, 2015

I'm on hiatus from live playing and picked this up, after reading all the reviews, to keep my timing tight and to help spur the songwriting process. I've only received it today and played with it for about 15 minute, so these are my initial impressions only.

But wow. What a cool pedal. I didn't even read the manual and was off and running. Does what I expected it to do, which is give me a tight backdrop on which to solo and write riffs. Combined with my Ditto Looper I can see this being one of the most high value pedals I've ever purchased. Waiting on my extension pedal to call in other parts on the fly. If there were a way to store patches as well, this could be a one man show's perfect partner.

Well-done Digitech!

DigiTech Trio Band Creator Pedal

By Stan from Boston on August 4, 2015

I really works well. Does everything claimed and then some. Put the effects thru a PA and the guitar thru a guitar amp and it sounds like a real band. Not cheesy or thin sounding at all. It is great for a singer and guitar/keyboard player to work on songs and get a little cover while learning them. The tempo can be set slower to learn the song and speed it up as you go. The drummer and bass player follow along like they don't have an opinion!

Trio with POD HD500

By Steve from Orange County, NY on July 8, 2015

Holy crap! Just got my Trio tonight and straight out of the box it is the most fun pedal I have ever used. Easy to setup and use, I got the extra 3 button switch to go with it. I set up a patch in my POD HD500 with my guitar in channel A and the FX loop in channel B feeding the Trio. Dummy plug in the Trio amp output and feed the Trio mixer output back into channel B. (that is only the drums and bass) Put a reverb after the bass and drums and center the mixer block. It sounds fantastic! Only through headphones so far but I am stoked.

Played a funky chord sequence and it picked it up perfectly. Sweep through the different styles and genres and get things I wouldn't have thought of on my own, all synced perfectly. Changes tempo no problem. This is going to take my practice, playing and song writing to a whole other level...

Trio

By Paul from N Dallas on July 8, 2015

I think many expect something different when they start using this band creator. The problem lies in teaching it and how you do that. Those who complain it does not render what they give it are being too complex, Simplify the teaching let it get the tempo you;re after and the basic root notes more so than trying to play fast chord chugga and whatnot. Learning to use it takes some time. Remember you can select different genre and style to what it comes up with to alter the rhythm. It will tend to play more bass notes on slower speed and changes each time the part is played with little embellishments and roll/fills on its own. I was amazed it changes bass tones and drums to various genres. Very, very cool device. I look forward to more advancements. Many are feeding the headphone out to a mixer for stereo fullness. Sound quality is OK for this level of cost and you can improve it if you know how. I am trying a BBE on mine, anyway, not a "beginner" toy, its how you are teaching it that is the problem.

Better Than I Expected!!!!

By Morgan Frechette from Florida on July 6, 2015

This. Is. My new best friend! This pedal is so enjoyable to play with. WOW. I must have for the learning guitar-player who doesn't have a lot of opportunity to play with others! It is comparable to one other drum-generating pedal (whose name I will not mention), however, this pedal produces flawless drum/bass grooves (unlike its buggy competitor) and is MUCH more affordable. This also includes bass, which its competitor does not. I love how you can adjust bass/drums levels to get the mix you want to hear. This thing is remarkable!

Digitech Trio

By Chase from Hawaii on June 25, 2015 Music Background: Guitar

I was sceptic about this pedal at first, but it was one of those take action kind of things and it ended up being my favorite pedal on my board. It responds so well to every little detail I play, each time it adds a bass line to the chords or notes I play it just gives me a little smile. It blows me away each time. I will defiantly be using this for playing at my restaurant gigs. I hope a future buyer is reading this, you won't be disappointed. Take action!

The Perfect Practice Tool!

By Mark Hughett from Texas on June 14, 2015 Music Background: Guitar Enthusiast

I received the Digitech TRIO from Sweetwater a little over 4 weeks ago and this awesome little box has made guitar practice not only more rewarding, but almost obsessive. It took less than 15 minutes to get set up and create my first jam session. My favorite feature is how the TRIO splits the bass and drum signals from the guitar signal. You can use an A/B effects switch box to send a clean guitar signal to the TRIO to get the rhythm pattern you want, then engage your pedal board and jam along using any amp. It works perfectly. It also sounds fantastic when you send the bass and drum signals to a mixer and PA speakers.

To change things up, I have been using the TRIO with my acoustic/electric guitar to improve my playing with the other genres. I plug the TRIO guitar output into channel one and the drums and bass into channel two on my Genz Benz Shenandoah 80LT. The stereo sound on the Genz Benz is fantastic, but any two-channel acoustic guitar amplifier that Sweetwater offers would perform just as well.

Hopefully, the next iteration of the TRIO will include the ability to select or add different percussion instruments, drum kits, bass sounds (maybe keyboards) and additional genres. For now, the TRIO is surprisingly affordable given its feature list and ease of use. Add that to Sweetwater’s legendary service and support and the TRIO is clearly a great investment.

Great to have such an amazing pedal. Can't get away from it. Got my own band for a couple of hundred dollars. The best thing is that it pays attention, listens, always in timing, So much fun. I have a Trio!!

What a blast!

By Kring from Connecticut on June 3, 2015 Music Background: Hobbiest

Blown away with this, Digitech has a winner! I've had it a month now and I use it every time I practice. I got together with another guitarist friend and we spent three hours running through song after song with only 30 seconds of setting the progression, then having a total blast going back and forth with Rhythm and Lead guitars, we even did multi-part songs. For the first incarnation it is perfect... and I can already see some opportunity to make the next version even greater with additional features. This pedal is going to try and be duplicated by many next year, but man the bar is high! This could be one of those classic pedals that most solo guitarists will eventually all have. What's even a nice little bonus i didn't expect; you can replace your bedroom amp with this pedal by using a headset or any speaker connected into the headphone jack and utilize the built in digital guitar FX to add clean, fat, boost, crunch to your playing, brilliant.... VERY VERY happy with this pedal.

Really good pedal for practice.

By Luis. from NY on June 1, 2015 Music Background: Hobbie.

This pedal works as advertised. It creates chord progressions base on what you play to it. It is very acurate with chords as well as your timing. Way better than a looper because it has different variations and is non-repetitive. Highly recommended.

rock it

By brian from new hamshire on May 31, 2015 Music Background: played out some mostly hobby fun

this pedal is great! it sounds good and is pretty easy to use. I only have had a little time to explore but see a lot of potential. you can use a pedal board with it. the trio first, then "amp" out to pedal board, the other out to another amp or PA. you need a dry signal to program it with the right (simple) chords for it to follow and your beat or rhythm is very important for timing. someone wanted to use a looper , to synchronize you need the looper in to program the trio and they will be in time.
it's fun and a great practice tool. it has amazing features and you will never run out of styles and beats. if you want some to play with.. play with your self ! buy it

best new pedal

By DEBORAH RAND from United States on May 22, 2015

Not a thorough review, but had to say something. Easy to use without looking at the manual. The quick manual is great. I scanned through the full manual in seconds to see if there was anything I was missing.
The lead guitar effect could be a little better but I simply put a distortion pedal in front for better results.
But this will definitely get you out of your rut if you don't play regularly with a band. After this, there probably is a next generation coming, not because this isn't awesome, but because what if you could make a bigger box with more functions?
Anyway, Many Kudos!

Great pedal: handle delicately

By Sweetwater Customer on January 2, 2018 Music Background: Playing since 1975

This is the best $ I've spent on gear ever. It is very easy to use and the bass/drum sounds are pretty good for the price. I love to develop my soloing in different styles and this is so much better than using a jam track off the web.

The only drawback is the construction. The housing is very tough, but the knobs are on very cheap plastic shaft pots. I picked up a cable and the Trio was hung up on it. The Trio fell just a few inches and the Style knob snapped off at the but holding the pot in place. I fixed it with some superglue, so it still works, but made me cringe that it would break so easily.

This is a fantastic tool. Much more fun than playing to a metronome, more versatile than playing to someone else's backing track. Easy to set up and use. The built-in effects are pretty good, but I plan to put this in my amp's effects loop so I can have all my favorite guitar tones and let the bass and drums bypass the preamp.

Love this pedal! Good for working on tune ideas but would be better if there was a way of saving your settings for songs. Maybe a program on your computer that you could transfer settings from your Trio, using the USB-mini connection already on the Trio. I'm sure those bright Digitech techs could come up with something. A few other reviewers mentioned adding a SD card slot, that would work to. How about it Digitech can you make that happen??

Huge potential

By Paul from Minnesota on December 26, 2015

I was up and running with this thing almost immediately. The drum and bass sounds are really good, way better than I could program myself. I can see the potential of this technology being integrated into digital recording workstations, and being a huge time saver for songwriters. The only problems I have had are that it can't anticipate the feel of your music. For example, it won't know if you are intending on your song being a ballad, or up tempo. Also, if you want to record a demo with stereo drums, the mixer output is only in mono. I did notice that the headphone output is stereo, so you may be able to convert the headphone output to stereo with a 3.5 mm to stereo 1/4 inch stereo cable. This device will 'remember' the last 'song' you played, but there is no way to store multiple songs (which is a bummer for 'live' performances). Otherwise, this is a fantastic 'jam' device, and I am having a blast with it.

I have had this for while now and it works very well once you get the hand of teaching it. I do a solo act and I have taught it many of the songs that I do (My arrangements) and then recorded them in my DAW to use as backing tracks. They sound pretty good.
I would not use this live as you really don't know what you are gonna get back until you listen and tweak the learning piece. Although it would be fine for a free for all Jam...just play along with whatever comes back. I would give this a solid 5 if it had more memory. It would be nice to be able to save the finished tracks in the device for recall later as it is tedious to re-teach it and get the same results, although I have done it. It is a remarkable piece of technology. I can't wait for the next version

Great pedal

A solo guitarist best friend

By Robert Blower from New Era on October 22, 2015 Music Background: Guitarist

Excellent pedal for the lone musician guitarist. Simple to set up and provides a very good rhythm background for jamming and practicing rifts. By reading most of the reviews, and applying the suggestions I have learned what this pedal is capable off. The most important thing is to use a basic chord progressions when getting started. Perhaps, just a IV I progression ,or vamp. If you start out with a lot of chord noodling, or fancy embellishments don't expect the pedal to compensate. My only beef with this pedal was the playback. The first couple of times the pedal function was flawless, and I was stoked. but the following day I couldn't get the thing to replay no matter what I tried. I eventually had to return it for another one. Even the replaced one gave me a problem. Thankfully, the good people at Sweetwater put me in touch with a service tech from Digi- Tech. I Learned that when this problem happens its best to totally reboot the unit. The only problem is that this process is not in any of the literature that comes with the unit or, mentioned in the on line manual. If this happens to your pedal, I suggest calling Dig Tech directly, and ask how to reboot the unit. Would I recommend the unit, most definitely!! the enjoyment of using the pedal far out ways the initial problems with the playback.

Best Band I Ever Played With

By Jay Peters from Kent, WA. on August 5, 2015 Music Background: Hobbyist

I've had the Digitech Trio for a couple of weeks now, so I have messed around with it quite a bit. It is a lot of fun and quite intuitive to use. I find it more useful for just fun jamming and helping me to hone chord progressions, but I prefer to use my Boss looper for that pedal's ability to record in some circumstances where I may have laid down something I want to layer onto later on. All in all though, i am happy with my Digitech purchase. As always, a shout out to Nick LaMendola my Sweetwater Engineer, for his great customer service!

One of my favorite purchases

By Kevin from Granite Bay, CA on July 12, 2015 Music Background: Hobbyist

Dollar for dollar, this is my favorite musical purchase I have made. This pedal is incredible! I am blown away by how easy it is to use and the quality of the sound it creates. I was playing within a couple of minutes of plugging it in. Very realistic sounding drum and bass lines. I have mine set up so that the drum and bass output go straight to a mixing board and the guitar goes through my Line 6 Amplifi FX100 (the "Guitar FX" on the pedal are pretty weak, so that is a knock if you are going to use the pedal alone straight to a mixer or an amp). Makes me feel like I have a band right there in my little music room. It is so much more fun to noodle around and practice when you have great music to play along with. My suggestions for improvement would be to improve the guitar FX sounds from the unit- this would make it more fun to travel with and use with headphones. Also I think it would be great if there was an option to have a rhythm guitar track as well, to give an even more full background to play lead along with. It would not surprise me if that comes out in a software update of some sort.

Easy to use with great results

By Curtis from Vermont on July 2, 2015

First - a shout out to Yuval for the always stellar service! I have tried to get a bass and drums into my mixes, usually only fair results. I have used drums loops, octave pedals of all sorts etc. the trio has made the board uncluttered and effective. Other pedals are in the drawer doubtfully waiting their turn again. The trio has pushed my playing forward at a rate previously unknown. My timing is better, voicing of leads has improved and I eagerly explore different styles.
The trio has many prime features that have already been noted. Thanks to Yuval and Sweetwater once again.

New TRIO Band In A Box

By Ron Eld from Stow, MA on June 21, 2015 Music Background: Playing badly for 40 yrs.

Still experimenting and testing all the cool stuff this little box does. I was convinced at one point it was broken or had a manufacturing glitch. It would not record at one point. I tried and tried but it would not create a loop. It turns out it does not like modeling amps like a Fender Mustang IV. If you select a preset it will not record a loop. That's not documented anywhere either. I still cannot determine what guitarFX are present when the green LED is lit. That's not documented either. I think it's going to be a while before everything to know about the TRIO is available.

TRIO + FS3X Footswitch = Addictive + Creative + Fun

By Sweetwater Customer on June 11, 2015

I purchased the 3-button FS3X footswitch with the TRIO pedal and am glad I did because the TRIO turned out to be a good pedal and the footswitch makes it even better. (I really like the $180 pedal, but even more-so with the $50 footswitch).
Similar to other reviewers, my experience is the pedal is super-easy to use, does what it says, and has (to me) pretty good sounds and variety. I do like it as an alternative to looping, since looping can start to sound all the same (maybe that's because I'm not a great looper). Also, the headphone, amp, AND mixer outputs allow me to use it in several settings.
The only thing it didn't do was have the ability to keep playing the guitar input that it "learned" from. For some reason, I expected that to be able to keep playing if I wanted it to (like a looper on top of the bass and drums that the TRIO comes up with). It's still a very cool pedal without that.

I think it is a great pedal and sounds great. DON,T have to worry about a bass player or a drummer,. Plenty of styles to choose from. there will always be some kind of sound and style that you will like. I ran into a little problem but sweet water was right on top of it. I have a good sales engineer, Tyler B, and he straightened it out in minutes. that is why I will always go to sweet water for my music supplies. Real Fun

By Sweetwater Customer on May 30, 2015

I must admit, at first seeing this inexpensive processor based box for the first time, It looked like a toy. getting one and playing with it I found it has a real believable sound through a P.A. and Amp, The bass tracked the chords perfectly, the beat was not always ideal but easy enough to change, it has no brake/pause feature this can be a big limitation in some songs, the band plays continuous with seamless change from memory's 1,2 and 3 for Blues and pop it does a nice job, it is fun to work on songs change them around and have the Trio give a idea of what it would sound like, it's also great for students to work on timing and riff's, The Trio also does a nice fill in when band members don't show up, Trio turns out to be a real fun well made pedal, I do recommend the FS3X Foot switch. easier to change song parts and start/stop.

Such fun!

A Practice and Songwriting Tool

By Howard Stevenson from Kissimmee, FL on May 27, 2015 Music Background: Hobbist

This was not I expected. I am not sure what I expected but I thought I could use this with my pedal board and my looper. It not going to work with a looper very well because it can't synchronize. And you can't play pedals in front of it because it can get confused as to the chords and mess up the progression and beat. So it has to go in front of the pedal board. But it is still and great tool, just not what I thought it was.
This is not a guitar effect, although it has effects. This is not a looping pedal, although it does play loops. It is a unique tool. All you have to do is play a chord progression and then it will play it back with great sounding drums and a realistic sounding bass player. It has almost endless variations in genre and style. It's easy to figure out. And it is great with head phones.
I used progressions from the song I like to play and it sounded good. It was better when I made up progressions myself and came up with new and original melodies. Too bad I didn't write them down or record myself. Now, is it worth $179? That depends on how much you like to practice because that is the purpose of the Trio Band Creator.

Great Pedal

By Michael from Coeur d'Alene, ID on May 24, 2015 Music Background: 30+ years playing

I'm using this pedal to learn my solos in a cover band and practice new licks, I absolutely love it.

Take some time with it.

By Mike from Houston TX on May 1, 2015 Music Background: Hopeless jammer

This is a great little pedal for jamming and practicing. I haven't tried recording with it yet, but I plan to try soon. The best feature is one they never talk about in the sales pitch. The 2 separate outs allow you to run your guitar signal into your rig, uncolored by the pedal, while you run the bass and drums from the pedal into your PA. That feature alone bumps the usability of this pedal up by a factor of 10. The drum tracks are stellar. A person can easily drop 5 bills on a machine that only plays static beats and takes a PHD to program. This thing follows you with incredible accuracy and even some flair for a much better price. It will even drop in fills if you let the last note of your rhythm hang a little. The bass takes some getting used to. After the first distracted, frustrating night I spent trying to mess with this through headphones I wrote a less than favorable review on MF. Since then I have had time to use it with my rig and take enough time to get what I hoped to get that first night. There are a couple pieces of advice I will offer. Keep it simple when you are letting it learn your rhythm. The more complex your rhythm, the more the bass player will go nuts, so much so that you will think Les Claypool is in there playing Avant guard jazz on the high frets. Keep your rhythms short too. If you only need one bar, only play one bar. you can always add your complexity after you get usable drum and bass parts. Actually, this thing does such a good job that it picks up those nuances in your playing. That's not a bad thing, but it can throw you off if your trying to build a rhythm section to record over. Where this thing excels is practicing lead. The bass and drum are so spot on with the rhythm you played, it will inform your lead playing. It actually helps you match the two styles of your playing so that you notice it almost immediately. All in all this is a great pedal that takes some time to learn. You have to learn how to teach it so that you can get it to do what you want to hear. Once it teaches you how to teach, the sky is the limit.

Awesome pedal

By Greg from Kansas on April 28, 2015

Nicely designed for music creation.

By Jeff from Sonoma coast on January 4, 2018 Music Background: saw Bob Dylan play Highlands twice in 2000 (Santa Cruz and Glasgow)

The Trio is a sweet little device when you can't find (or don't want to deal with) a bassist and a drummer.

A couple tips.

1. Update the software, it's a big improvement
2. I like to play through the unit on an acoustic with a pickup, and use my stereo for the bass and drums, no amp required

Digitech Trio

By BillyPhilly on January 1, 2018

Had this pedal working 5 minutes after getting it hooked up. Recorded 3 parts to Eagles Lyin' Eyes - intro, verse, chorus. The pedal constructed the bass and drum parts by "listening" to me play the rhytym parts in G. Pedal is quiet, no unusual noise. Result - surprisingly accurate bass and drums parts based off your chord playing and timing. So this pedal could be useful for learning a new song, singing along to the parts you've already put into the pedal or possibly song writing where you want more than your guitar to have a bigger sound. The pedal is limited to a maximum of 3 parts at any given time so not good for live performance use. You need the foot pedal to move seemlessly between the 3 parts otherwise you are stopping to press the part buttons. Overall, I like it!

Mono out only?

By Ron Septimus from CA. on December 26, 2017

Maybe I'm missing something but there seems to be no stereo out. When you plug into the unit via mixer it all comes from one side. This unit would be ideal if the output was stereo. Sound from a single guitar amp sounds tinny and cheap. It sounds much better using the mixer out but it's mono. Why would they do this? Otherwise it's a great practice tool. Mono Out ... almost a thumbs down.

This pedal is so much fun. I can put in a chord progression and then noodle over it for hours trying different grooves. The bass styles are great. Sounds like a real bass player sometimes. (The r&b bass styles are especially good.) The only thing that would make it better is more memory slots (which I think you get with the Trio+.) I could easily do a solo lounge gig with more memory slots.

By Paul Campo from Lynn Ma on October 14, 2017 Music Background: Play a little of everything guitar, drum, guitar and keyboard

It is great for its purpose. The pedal for it could be better to the fact if it could Pick a beat forward and backwards instead of going around the whole dial in one direction direction. Other than that it does what it says it supposed to do. Wish it had one more style, metal. All in all a great pedal.

I like it

By Sweetwater Customer on July 22, 2016

After an hour or two, I learned that you cannot get too fancy
with the chording guitar. You have to play a simple chord
progression for the bass and drum to follow along. "All Along The
Watchtower" would be a good example. A basic 4 chord intro
would seem easy enough, but, I have to slightly modify the drum
part to speed up/slow down for my leads. I enjoy the Trio Band
pedal, it is a good jam box.

Excellent practice pedal. Do not try to confuse it with chord and rhythmic changes. Save that for comping with the drums/bass. Soloing on the bass line makes you listen to the changes. The newer one was just a little too pricey for what I need it for but it has a built n looper and is more of a performance pedal.

Trio for backing tracks

By Arthur from NJ on January 20, 2016 Music Background: Gigging part time for many years

Trio is capable of improving your chops when used to replace jam partners. It will improve your timing and meter, which is something that human jam-mates may be incapable of helping you with. It doesn't get tired of playing the same song over and over until you get your lead parts polished. Trio would have accelerated my progress as a player immensely when I was starting out and is still a useful tool for me 30 years into playing guitar.
I use Trio to create backing tracks which I record into my DAW. I title the wave files and put them in a folder on the desktop of my tablet. I put the tablet on a music stand, scroll through the backing tracks in the folder, select the one I want to play and send that to the PA as an accompaniment for solo gigs.
The drum and bass sounds are decent, but not mind blowing. I can tweak them in my DAW before finalizing the backing tracks. Using Trio to create backing tracks makes my solo and duo performances more interesting and more fun for me and the listeners.
I hope that digitech comes out with pro version which has more processing power and will provide more realistic sounding backing tracks. I would be willing to pay twice or three times as much if they offered that.

Gotta Love a Good Timekeeper

By Jay Jernigan from Springfield, TN on December 23, 2015

I was aware when I ordered the Trio that it had certain limitations, so there is no fuss there. Within 20 minutes of opening the box, I had figured it out and had my first song in. Using the footswitch was another learning curve, but I managed. Used it to make a couple of You Tube videos, and that was fun. As a serious live or recording tool, its limitations may be too great to overcome, but it is a boatload of fun! If I might, I would suggest to DigiTech that they upgrade to a system that store more parts, perhaps on an SD card, and make it a solo performer's dream come true. Four stars for a great first effort!

Yes, it's Casio-esque. Irrelevant. If you want to work your chops against drums-n-bass, this is the basics at its best!

Only put it at 4 because they should've added a single-layer loop on it so you could have the full rhythm section. Still an incredible value if you want a practice mate you don't have to buy beer for.

Terrific Trio

By DennisNv from Lake Tahoe Area on August 14, 2015 Music Background: Musician and composer, mainly guitar and keyboards.

This handy bass and drum back-up creator is a very useful tool for all manner of guitar players but especially for those who compose music. It's the fastest way I know of to get a complete, very useable rhythm into my DAW. In addition, it is soooo easy to use. In the first few hours after opening the package three songs that had existed only in my head were stored safely in my DAW where I no longer needed to worry about the ideas evaporating into thin air. The unit makes zero noise, the drum and bass sounds are excellent, the drum and bass lines are rock solid and the feature set reminds me of a Swiss Army knife. I typically have my guitar plugged into the TRIO and the TRIO plugged into my audio interface so if I wake up in the middle of the night with a song in my head I can get the rhythm, bass and drums stored into a project in fifteen minutes or less. What would have made this tool "blow me away" would be if it stored the rhythm guitar along with the bass and drum so it all played back together but that might be asking too much from such a small gadget. Another feature I would have liked it to have would be a stereo output with the bass and drums routed separately. The TRIO definitely deserved the best of show award it received at Winter NAMM 2015 and I don't foresee anybody regret purchasing one.

Great Practice/Studio Tool

By Half-Blind Charlie from Cleveland, GA on June 30, 2015 Music Background: Guitar (Intermediate/Beginner) - Harmonica (Experienced)

Let me preface this review by saying that harmonica is my primary instrument. Until about 2 1/2 years I was half of a blues duo gigging every other week. When the duo broke up I decided to try to learn guitar and become a solo act. That is my background for this review.

Since I am a solo act (playing for fun and self-taught) there are things that I need help with. One of them is timing. A metronome helps but does not give you that "live band" feel. This pedal does. This pedal offers a large enough variety of genres and styles to keep even the most experienced player happy. The sounds are as accurate as you can expect from a sub $200.00 pedal. The adjustments are very helpful in setting the tone/mood of the tune.

The bad. You need a footswitch if you plan to use a second part - which most songs have. It is all but impossible - unless you are extremely proficient and already have excellent timing - to get by without one. It takes me anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to prepare to play a single song. This makes the pedal impossible to gig with. I figured this out before purchasing so take that into consideration. (The guy in the video is extremely well versed in both guitar and this pedal. His video is meant to get you to buy.) If you do recording and/or enjoy playing with a band this is as good a solution as is currently available.

All in all I am having a blast exploring the new options that are available to me. When it comes to hard-core practice I do no use the pedal because it is a waste of time - for me anyway. Know what you are buying and use it for what it is intended and you will be as happy as I am.

Not ready for live or recording applications

By Anthem from Omaha on November 20, 2017 Music Background: Professional

I bought this with the idea of using it for recording backing tracks to my guitar and vocals. Way too uncontrollable for a live or recording application. Great for practicing. Sound quality is great. Has a mind of it's own and puts inconsistent parts in that are sometimes way too busy and non-repeatable in the background. Big learning curve as well. I am giving this 3 stars just because of it's innovative approach and the sound quality, however, it's not very practical or consistent to use in any kind of audience-related application. They have some additional issues to work out that I imagine they will, over time. Great idea; needs refinement. Cable for optional foot pedal controller does not fit correctly! How can a product be sent out like that! Paid much more than this list for mine; a testament to the fact they have to discount them to clear them out.

Good but limited

By Sweetwater Customer on January 19, 2016

As others note, this is a good practice tool. I had hoped to use it live as well and it is too limited for that. If there were some way (any way) to load songs at least one at a time to use (sparingly) for a live show. The USB port suggests itself but anything that would allow a few songs to be pre-recorded (set up) would allow live use.

I worked with the machine in my studio, and was amazed at what it can do with such a little box. Sounded great and the drums can be edited somewhat to your preference. I wanted to use it on my single gigs but you need the 3 switch pedal that is advertised, but not yet available. I will wait for a creator that has everything, so one can use it on stage. I am looking around for others now.

A decent device but . .

By Terry Angelli from Malden, MA on August 18, 2015 Music Background: Advanced player, semi-pro.

After getting beyond the initial difficulties of getting the device to record (the so called manual is ONE page) a friend and I sat with the Trio on several occasions. I decided to return it, here's why.

Once a recording is made it is difficult to find the place to start playing on anything more complex than a I-IV-V type of song. There should be a demarcation point with perhaps a light or audible click that could be turned on or off. This would clearly indicate where you can jump in to start playing. Otherwise you sit listening waiting for the spot to jump in and it's easy to miss.

The bass is overly complex. There should be a simple bass line and then the user should have the option to make it more sophisticated.

The Style knob has the percussion all over the place and I get it, it varies the style of playing. However when attempting to record and play to a blues tune I struggled to find an appropriate setting.

The thought of using this device in a live situation is not an option at least not for me. It takes so long to set it once you've recorded you're passage. Imagine stopping for two or three minutes (or more) between songs to set the device in a live situation! You would lose the audience.

The recordings aren't bankable. So once you've dialed in a good setting you can't save it to recall it for use later. And when you've found a decent percussion and bass setting and you want to use it again with different chords, without touching the dials the bass and drum lines are changed.

Songs that have a bridge in a different key require using the second or third "bank" that has that song portion and without the foot pedal you have to stop playing to push the button.

While I appreciate the merits of this device and can see it's usefulness it's just not for me

May not be what you want!

By Jay from Mississipi Gulf Coast on May 20, 2015 Music Background: Studio owner and Stage performer

The TRIO pedal does exactly what it advertised. Depending on your use for the unit, may cause one to order the optional pedal controller. Although the opt pedal is not necessary to achieve what it is suppose to do. Expect to spend considerable time (varys) to master this unit. Play simple chords FIRST, and teach the pedal. Remember, this is a dumb box that must "learn" your song. It probably will play back something you didn't expect because YOU didn't teach it. Practice!!!! By adjusting the tempo and using the "alt" button you will begin to see and hear the variations of drum and Bass parts.
I gave it a three star because, while I think this pedal is excellent for general practice ,especially for beginners or someone to have a rhytmn machine, it does not have the quality drum and Bass sounds I'd prefer. Of course, at the cost of this pedal, one should not expect top of the line sound such as other products available at Sweetwater. I throughly tested this unit through a full line stereo PA for best highs and lows. When we played simple general chords, nothing fancy, we found that it did NOT play back the kind of patterns we expected. It did play back very well just not what we thought is correct. Too many Bass notes played back. After adjusting the tempo and ALT button it kind of settled down. This is definitely not for the stage performer because one has to teach/load a new song each time for it to play.
Summary, its great for a practice unit (reason for this unit) but a bit disappointing when comes to sound quality and the inability to select Bass patterns!

Good, but not what I expected.

By Ron from Hutchinson on December 12, 2016

I guess I was expecting too much. I bought a vocal harmonizer last year and loved it. I thought this was on the same path but it wasn't. It does not follow you, you program it, and it does exactly what you program it to do. You cannot change anything on the fly,. Not for live performance. You get one song, with chorus and bridge. Great for practicing and recording, but not live performing. It is still pretty cool.

This is one of those good ideas that is doomed to collect dust on a shelf. It might spark creativity on the occasional song, but it is awkward to use and requires fresh programming for every song. It also lacks the spontaneity or creativity of real players. It's certainly useless for performance - an occasional practice toy at best.

Great Pedal, just not for me

By Gary C from Maryland on October 12, 2015 Music Background: 50 years on guitar, part-time to full time pro.

Just a quick note about the TRIO. I can sure see who it won an award from NAMM University. But for me, it wasn't something that I couldn't live without. If you're a songwriter, this thing will really do a job for you fleshing out new ideas. If you're a novice to advanced beginner, it is fun being able to play along and learn what it means to integrate into a band. It does a decent job with the drums (fairly simplistic) and bass (way too busy even with a straight 12 bar blues and it seems to be playing IMHO about an octave too high) and what is generated is musically correct. For me, it would've been better to have some memory to save songs and at least a minimal looper (to record rhythm guitar) so you could turn the band on and wail away on lead. I would've liked to see a separate output for the drums and bass. You could teach it, snag off the drum track and then record your own bass line, but while you can split the guitar output alone, the bass / drums always come from a single output. The styles and variants of those styles are pretty much standard and again can get a little busy. You can get around some of that by slowing down the tempo to thin it out, but then you're playing a slower song. I can't see this being used in a live performance situation unless you're playing one song that you just "taught" it.

Don't get me wrong...I love DigiTech and have been using their stuff for many years and will continue to. In my hands on evaluation...this pedal is a niche item that some folks will love and some won't. It does what it does very well...it just wasn't my cup of tea and for my practice time and skill improvement jam tracks are more practical than the TRIO.

Wow But....

By Sweetwater Customer on July 16, 2015

To be worth the $
There are 3 things that are absolutely Necessary updates for the Trio.
1. The Bass is way tooooo Busy.. It needs a Straight Bass line. That Only changes when chord changes. IE: No changing bass notes during a Chord. 'AAAAAAA GG DDDD(if that is how the Chords are played). Simpleton Mode needed.
Every Style Has too many Bass note Changes during 1 Chord.
2. Sync Bass and Drums for Tracks. No body wants Both on 1 track. So there needs to be a 1 measure count in or something for recording each part.
3. Timing needs to be Absolute for every style!!!!! And Parts 1,2,3 ** A setting of Free Timing or set timing to track Part 1. Needs to be added.
When changing to 1 of the 12 styles. Timing is sometimes Lost . Even playing in with a metranome clicking. Part 1 and part 2 Seldom are the Same timing!!!!!! or even Close! This Causes problems! I am forced to play the whole song in to part 1 most of the time. Out side of that It is fun.
Things that would be nice
Tap Tempo or metronome.
When part is stopped. Revert to Beginning of part. Not pick up where it was when part stopped . This is just Stupid!

Digitech trio band creator padal

By Jay Tysver from Wisconsin on October 24, 2017

The biggest problem I would have is cords and extra stuff that u don't have room for on stage. Plus rockers like me is just another thing to look out for or trip and tell so for safety on stage I feel unsafe

Noisy pedal

By J. Pereira from Plymouth, MA on October 7, 2017 Music Background: Home picking since 1988

I like what this pedal can do and being someone who just plays at the house comes in handy.

When I first got the pedal I set it up at the end of my pedal chain (which the instructions doesn't tell you this) and my amp on the clean channel as stated in the instructions. The drums sounded like I was playing it through an AM radio station. I also don't like that you can't power the unit on or off unless you unplug the PSU. Then I went from the amp jack to amp (again at the end of the pedal chain) and then with the mixer jack went to my Focusrite and it was night and day. However now I'm getting an awful hum from the pedal through my guitar amp. I removed the Trio and hum goes away.

No aux input

By Sweetwater Customer on October 5, 2016

Why doesn't it have an Aux Input! That's the best part of my JamMan looper. You can loop parts of song, like the Violin or Sexophone into your playing

Cool pedal

By Del from Texas on August 21, 2015

This pedal is good if you compose or just want to jam with backing tracks. It's not feasible to use live due to very limited memory.

Junk Pedal!

By Quan from Houston on May 8, 2015 Music Background: 25 years playing the guitar!

This pedal is good for one thing is for people who are beginners who want to learn how to keep a beat and play with the bass. I play a very easy rock rhythm the trio can't even give me a right beat or a right bass line! The bass line add to many note. If you are a speed or heavy fast metal guitar player that like to play fast rhythm like 16 note well just for get it because the trio do not have double bass drum. These drum beat in the trio are basic drum beat. When I first saw the demo on YouTube about the Trio it said what ever rhythm you play the trio will write a drum beat and bass line for you? I don't think so! The trio will give you a drum beat and bass line but it won't be what u want to hear! what they are giving you are some beat and bass line that don't even match with your rhythm! If you are a Pro musicians you do not want to buy this junk Pedal and try to compose music. Is not a bad pedal for beginners people. Who would want to play a rhythm in just one bar and keep the rhythm easy? Thanks

Reliability Questionable

By Disappointed from Greenfield, IN on October 13, 2017

My son and I both have Trio pedals and, while they have not been used heavily, both have quit working. When they worked, they were a great practice tool and my son also used his for a couple of songs when performing live. I am currently looking into getting them repaired, but at the current $99 price new, replacement might make more sense. Unfortunately, given the apparently lack of reliability, replacement is not an option.

Lacking Major Features

By GMx from CA on January 23, 2016 Music Background: extensive

I rate it as sub-average because it lacks such an obvious and easy-to-implement feature as saving your work. Sure, you can put in some leg work and program three song parts - by the way, you really can't work efficiently without the "optional" (read: expensive) footswitch - and when you do it you can jam all night long, but you can't save your pedal settings or song anywhere when you decide to work on the next piece.
So you can't really use it live, and you wouldn't use this for recording, which leaves you with just a practice tool that costs $180 and requires an additional footswitch... which translates into a minimally useful rip-off. Yeah, the drum & bass sounds are OK, and you can get some passable accompaniment on the fly, but without the save/restore (and perhaps some RAM so you can store some songs on a SIMM or something), this is a worthless little toy that costs WAY too much for what it does.

Right For Some, Not For Others

By Sweetwater Customer on December 13, 2017

Others have provided excellent reviews, however this review is only for my needs and my opinion. First, let me state that the pedal itself does work as advertised. However, there are a few issues which prevent me from getting my full use and "value for the buck". First, the pedal would be even more useful if it followed your chord changes on the spur of the moment -- I know that pitch detection technology can readily do that these days and is that fast, because we see autotune detection at near-instant speeds from other pedal brands like TC Helicon. Heck, this pedal can instantly change drum parts and other band stylings on the fly at the push of a button, so it doesn't seem like too far of a stretch if they had programmed this capability from the start. At present, everything must be manually controlled. So, you are stuck with this robotic chord progression that you have to manually put in and if you need another or a change of any kind in the song, you must manually program that in too. Yes, you can program additional band "parts" such as Verse or Chorus, but if I'm going to do that, why don't I just program some midi tracks for use onstage live? Why can't it follow me intelligently? at least then I can have endings, which this pedal cannot do. All in all I think its a great pedal if you're going over / brainstorming riffs and rhythms for songwriting, or just need quick and easy bass and drum loops on the fly for simple chord patterns without need for much intricacy. However, for any further robust or complex duties, you may as well just stick to pre-recorded tracks or real musicians.

Sound quality is terrible

By Molly on October 5, 2017 Music Background: Hobbyist

First I tried the Trio, then the Trio Plus and finally, the SDRUM. Each time I was hoping that DigiTech would release something with decent quality. Unfortunately, all three products sound pretty terrible. And if it doesn't sound good, it doesn't really matter what it can do, in my opinion.

Unsatisfied

By Not happy with this. on September 11, 2017

It doesn't record the guitar though. I thought it would record rhythm track so I could practice lead guitar but I guess not as it didn't come with user Manuel like the guy in the video talks about the user Manuel explains stuff. Hmmmm might be sending this back.

Not too happy

By Lee Scallion from Hot Springs Arkansas on October 11, 2016

First one was so fun for a week or two then it wouldn't work anymore . Got another and was having a blast. Then after a couple of months the peddle switch stopped functioning. Wow loved it. Bad luck?????????

Throw it on the pile

By Jon-Paul Hutchins from Phoenix, AZ on April 30, 2016 Music Background: former pro/current hobbyist

I have been making tracks to play along with in Logic. This pedal looked like a great alternative. It does what it says, but the tones are just awful. the drums were piercing and the base distorted. I tried different combinations of settings on the trio, different amps, different guitars and I still got that piercing 90's piccolo snare. Wincing to the beat, this pedal gets thrown on the pile with other well intentioned gimmicks. Another expensive education.

Not What I Expected

By James on March 24, 2016

Since I don't play out, I looked forward to this pedal as a way to create and record songs. It tends to overpower what you are trying to do by too much improvisation. Specifically the bass. I'm sorry I invested in it.

digitech trio coll but not for performance

By Tim on October 20, 2015

The pedal was very cool but it is a luxury item to jam with only. it does not have memory for using it for a performance.and training it is not done well on the fly.I play mostly covers and backing tracks are available by computer and the internet.Nice but not for me.
