EarthQuaker Devices The Depths V2 Optical Vibe Machine Pedal Reviews

Optical Vibe Effects Pedal with Intensity, Voice, Level, Rate, and Throb Controls, and Flexi Switch

The EarthQuaker Devices The Depths V2 optical vibe effects pedal reminds us that there is nothing quite like the sound of a guitar going through a great vibe. This second-generation model is even better than the original, with an updated flexi switch that allows for either momentary or latching operation. The Depths V2 offers all the tones heard on such iconic songs as Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" and Hendrix's "Machine Gun." It then adds Voice and Throb controls to take those sounds far into the future, and the 100% analog dry signal path and true bypass ensure your original guitar tone shines through. There aren't many vibe pedals with as much control as the EarthQuaker Devices The Depths V2.

Really cool Uni Vibe

By Sweetwater Customer from Arizona on March 10, 2023

I really enjoy playing this pedal. It sounds great and is more tweakable than your typical Uni Vibe. The throb and voice controls are welcome additions and can help get you into some new territory. The soft switch is really nice too and it has very little noise when clicked on. Highly recommend.

On a hunch

By Hoyt F Day from Ruidoso, NM on April 29, 2022

Was looking for a uni-vibe style pedal but more modern, bought this on a hunch. I use it all the time. Sounds great.

Great vibe

By Tom H from Minnesota on February 4, 2022 Music Background: Gigging local musician, 25 years of playing guitar

I'd been playing a deja vibe but wanted something warmer. This is it. Level knob means you can use it as a boost if you want. Has both a more chorusy flavor and vibrato tones depending on what you're feeling. The swirls are lush and psychedelic. Good times, give it a try!

My favorite sounding Univibe pedal

By Jarrod White from Plano, TX on October 21, 2021 Music Background: 17 years of playing in school/church/theatre/open mic-nights, and coffee shops

This is not the "best" univibe pedal on the market to me, overall as a total package. I would give that to the JHS Unicorn V2, simply because it has a tap tempo for dialing in the rate while the EQD Depths does not. Now, if EQD were to release a V3 with a tap tempo for the rate, I would buy it in a heartbeat. However, this pedal to me has undeniably the best sound of any univibe I have heard. It is fairly different in its approach to univibe - its more of what I would describe as an ambient univibe sound than a Jimi Hendrix univibe sound. Personally I like its sonic textures best, I just really wish it had a tap tempo knob. Being able to run the pedal at 18V for more dynamics and higher headroom is incredible too. Not many other pedals like that in this category.

Awesome pedal

By CF on June 24, 2021

Does not quite get the exact same "whoosh" that you would get from a Dejavibe or a Shin-Ei, but it does get close. More versatile than any other vibe I've personally ever tried. The hold/release function is a particularly nice touch. Works especially well stacked with fuzz, but also sounds great with clean tones. The construction, as always with EQD, is solid. Would definitely buy another one if anything ever managed to happen to this one

Ultimate VIBE Pedal!

By Amir Arslanagic on May 29, 2021

Bought one about year ago. Played and liked it a lot. Somehow got me a bug to try deja-vibe. Tried it and figured that I missed "The Depths". Returned and bought brand-new "Depths" pedal again. Thank you Sweetwater for working the deal painlessly. NOw, what is that I like here - it is hard to count it all... Versatility the most. Those recommended setups are super-great and work like charm. I always tweak my way slightly. It is easy to find your sound. And also, I need to mention that this pedal is lettle brighter than your standard famous vibe pedals. I like it that way.

Cool Vibes!

Love the effects of this pedal. Swimmy and swirly all the way. Tons of adjustment . Earthquaker makes some of my favorite pedals and this is no exception.

A delicious version of the Uni-Vibe

By Terence King from New York, NY on November 29, 2019

I've bought and tried a number of vibe pedals over the years, but none of them ever seemed to speak to me. This one is different. The sound is deep and luscious and very tweakable. The underlying vibe sound is just beautiful. This is the one for me.

So many sounds in this little box.....

By Terry T from USA on June 10, 2018 Music Background: Gigging Musician

I have tried so many chorus, phase, and vibe pedals and this pedal does the best of what they can and more. Gives you the Trower/Hendrix thing, and has a ton of other usable settings from subtle to whacked out. I love the momentary engage capability on the switch, for on-the-fly fills or accents. For someone fronting a 3-piece, that"s a handy option. All the knobs have such response and effect on the overall resulting sound, and there is a lot of interplay between the controls. Subtle adjustments yield big and exciting changes. It"s fun to add some echo and just strum chords on various settings. I love this little machine and it will be a staple on my pedal board.

Spectacular

By JUSTIN ALLEN RICHARDSON from IRVINE, CA on March 16, 2018 Music Background: Play for fun & enjoyment

I absolutely love this pedals. It can be set to do exactly what you want it to do. It plays very well with others of all types. The tones are great! It was definitely worth the money, and has proven to be invaluable on my board. EarthQuaker Devices has done it again.

Best I’ve used

By Eddie on February 2, 2018

I"m a bit of a pedal junkie for a bassist, and I"ve used a number of modulation pedals over the years. They sound good in my room, but fall flat in a live setting. Not this one. I run it 18v and it"s clean as can be. It can be used as a boost and has a lot of tonal flexibility. I use the flexi switch to do silly things with chords and synth patches. This is my fourth EQD pedal and of course I highly recommend it.

Not Quite a Classic Univibe, but Excellent

By Steve from NJ from NJ on May 28, 2018 Music Background: Semi Pro

Pedal offers a lot of options for dialing in great tones, the voice control is very helpful in achieving the sound you are looking for with different pickups. Throb control (to me) changes the placement of the peaks in the modulation.

Though the pedal doesn't sound like a classic univibe (I think the Fulltone Deja Vibe comes closest), the Depths pedal gets very close if you set it with a slower rate and lower intensity and offers the ability to get more extreme effects.

Quiet operation, solidly built.

Fantastic pedal; but NOT for folks looking for the original

By Jack from Minnesota on May 6, 2018

I bought this pedal a bit over a year ago or so (might have been the v1 pedal, v2 I don't think had come out). Before you read on know this: this is a fantastic pedal - it is its own beast and fits nicely within the broader EQD lexicon. It is not however, the pedal you are looking for if you want a 100% authentic replication of the original vibe circuitry - this won't get you there I guarantee it and neither will *most* pedals on the market. The univibe is really a finicky effect and you need to do your homework/try out a few to get a sense of what you like.

I bought this pedal full knowing that it was EQD's take (meaning not the same) on the classic incandescent lamp and photocells circuit; I was thrilled to see what they produced and still am impressed to this day. They were 100% correct when they said that this was their take on it though - it really is its own thing and some of the sounds you can get out of it are just so drippy and trippy (e.g. No Quarter - Zep). After much soul searching though I recently did go to a different pedal company to get a faithful recreation of the original circuit (which costed an arm and a leg) and I had to sell the Depths to partially fund it. Long story short: its a magnificent pedal if you know you're not looking for original circuitry and are adventuresome at heart; you can't go wrong with this. If you know you're looking for that classic vibe chew, then you should look into saving up some cash and hitting up some private pedal manufactures like Black Cat or Drybell.

Exactly What I'd Hoped For

By Matt Smith from Los Angeles on March 27, 2018 Music Background: Composer/Producer/Pianist/Educator

This was my first EQD pedal, but I've followed them for years. I love traditional sounding gear, and it's hard to beat something like a classic Uni-Vibe, but I think EQD really shines when they say "yeah, we're not doing that." It's not exactly a traditional vibe sound, and I doubt that it's intended to be used that way. It does the best thing a modern pedal can possibly do - it sounds like itself. It's really fairly unique, in my estimation. As such, I'm using it for a relatively unique application - the cello. It sounds great on guitar, keys, synths, what have you, but it's really beautifully at home on something really dark and rich (the "throb" function alone justifies this, but there's something about the way it's voiced that makes it sound...well, deep). My only criticisms of it are very minimal - I wish you could get a bit more extreme in terms of speed, and I'd sort of like to be able to control the specific shape of the oscillation. Those two things are VERY far down my list of priorities, though, because I bought this pedal expecting it to be THIS PEDAL, and it does exactly what it says it does in a way that I find 100% usable and absolutely breathtaking in the right context.

Decent effects

By Joeallev972 from Savannah, TX on February 25, 2022 Music Background: I just like jam

Cant complain too much about this one. Does what it says it does but it's missing a little mojo. Definitely worth a demo. EQD makes some quality pedals.

Almost there

By Jeff from NW Indiana on March 12, 2018 Music Background: 40 years guitar, rock and blues

This EQD pedal sounds good although, in my opinion, it does not have what I was looking for. It wasn"t that "chewy" vibe that I"m in search of.
