From Our Research Team:

Amazing Sound And Design!

The latest addition to Blue's award-winning family of handbuilt microphones is sure to turn some heads! The Ball, so-named for its unique shape and inimitable Blue styling, is Blue's first offering in the dynamic mic category. But a phantom-powered dynamic?

Phantom Power - Smooth Sound
Most recordists know that conventional dynamic mics do not require external DC power. Rather, they employ a relatively simple circuit and derive their output voltage through electromagnetic induction. While this makes them rugged, reliable and easier to operate than their electrostatic counterparts, they also present the user with a unique set of problems. Chief among these is frequency-dependent variable resistance which has dramatic effects on the transducer's acoustic balance, phase coherence, noise specification and overall output. Blue engineers solved this problem by incorporating a phantom powered proprietary active balancing circuit in the Ball's output stage. This circuit maintains a constant pure-resistive 50- ohm load across the useable frequency spectrum yielding an exceptionally smooth and open sound previously unheard of in a dynamic microphone.

High SPLs? No Problem!
Additionally, as a dynamic mic, The Ball is capable of handling extremely high sound pressure levels without distortion, making it the ideal choice for studio, stage, broadcast, film or any other applications where reliability, versatility and the utmost sound quality is required.

Just got it today!

I just rec. my BLUE Ball today. I had the opportunity to take it to a gig tonight and try it out live on saxophone, voice, and trombone. Contrary to one of the earlier reviews, the mic has a shock mou... read more [+]nt that you can purchase separately (BLUE Ringer).
The mic certainly lived up to my expectations for a $100 mic. It had much more character on sax and bone than a sm57 (less generic). It worked well as a backup vocal mic as well. I plan on picking up at least one more of these. close [-]

Just got mine...

Well for the new price ($109) it is certainly worth the money, $200 was pushing it. I got mine...right before the price lowered (but it was a b-day present, so oh well...but considering picking up an... read more [+]other one). I've been using it on guitar amps, voice, and even to pick up a little fret/pick noise in mic-ing an electric guitar (so its good at picking up subtle details). I do agree that its got a little bit of a self noise issue...but only if you really crank the gain will it be noticeable. close [-]

it's a negative review

Music Background:
Well, I red all positive reviews arround and figured I need two (I record interviews often and need 2 identical mics) the first thing I noticed was the dramatic difference between the two. Compared to Shure SM58, Blue Ball has much more selfnoise, there is no way to shock mount it and it picks up a lot of noise with its body. It's much more sensitive to pops. Body is made of plastic, electronics pick up hum from electrical wires. Basically, you don't need it. look at other dynamic mics. close [-]

Blue "the Ball"

by Eric from CT

Contrary to it's descr iption, this mic is not good for everything. It does, however, sound incredible in front of cabs (guit/bass) as well as anything percussion. It's SPL handling is great... read more [+]-- and with that toughness it maintains that condenser sound very well. Very detailed sound, so beware where you put it!! It will pick up lots of ambience and light transients! Recommended use: hand drums, jazz guitar amps, kick drum and stringed instruments. For the price, you owe it to yourself to just have one handy. It's a breeze to use and set-up, however it will never replace your SM57 or MD421. For a pair of benjamins though, it's a great price on a mic that you'll find a use for. close [-]

VERY Preliminary Ball info

by Barry Werger from LA, CA

Music Background:
Just a quick note since I haven't seen reviews of the Ball anywhere, and myself had questions I hoped someone would answer... I recently received mine, but haven't had much of a chance to do... read more [+] more than a quick test. First impressions: it's not as plasticky as the computer-generated images look... it's heavy, beautifully textured! Sound so far seems excellent, though I've only tested so far on pan flute, cowbell, and bad voice. The "swivel" mount allows the mic to tilt vertically only, but is quite useful. The "power" light on the front is interesting... close [-]
