OMG! Truly a BEAST! Has more usable gain than ANY AMP I have ever heard or played! It has a better sounding clean and a AWESOME SOUNDING reverb than Fender which IMHO says it ALL! Remember it was the ... read more [+]Bassman which the first Marshall was built on. I own 7 valve juniors, Peavey Penta, Line 6 Spider 4, Crate Glx1200 and a Tech 21 which is another sleeper but the So Cal has TOP SPOT on my Cab!! close [-]

When I first played on this in a shop I was simply amazed, and then when I got it home I was further blown away! It has excellent tonal adjustment, and the independent/interactive option is something ... read more [+]else altogether. I personally love the sound both channels produce, from purity of the clean to the almost grunge and classic overdrive of the gain.
All this for under a grand to boot! I'm not sure how it gets much better than this, but if it does... Wow close [-]

Outstanding

I gave this Amp 5 stars becauseI dont think there is a better Tube amp of its type in production for less than thousand dollars. In fact, since Peavey stopped making the low priced Windsor, there isnt... read more [+] even anything comparable. As the Windsor was a Marshall clone, the SO CAL 50 is a Soldano clone. In fact, it was designed by Soldano for Gibson, and apparently they just modified an existing model,(the SLO 100) and called it the SO CAL.The SO CAL is one of the second generation familly of world beater Epiphone tube amps, and the only one of them not part of the "vintage" line (the Valve Jr., Blues custom 30 and Valve Sr.), Since most Hi Gain 50 - 100 watt Tube Heads are wannabe Marshalls, its great that Epi didnt go that way with their Hi Gain head, its got a boutique, American, southern Clifornia sound all the way. Apropriately, Its tube driven spring reverb sounds as good as Ive ever heard on an amp, including vintage 1950's Fenders, and thats no exaggeration. I highly recommend this amp. close [-]

Amazing value

I bought one of these at the knockdown price of £200 (about $400) with a free 412s cabinet. I had to have it at that price but expected to have to upgrade components when the guarentee ran out. To my... read more [+] suprise, it doesn't need anything doing to it and sounds fantastic as it is. The reverb is good, although not quite deep enough for surf music. The gain is very good and plenty for my needs. It's quiet, powerful, the bass is good and it sounds as clean as a whistle with a good valve tone. I keep looking at other amps, but nothing I've tried betters it without spending over £1000, and even then it's still in good company. Epiphone sent me the schematic, and it's really well designed, using relays for switching and valves throughout.

DAMN GOOD AMP

If you're looking for,or wishing for a 50 watt tube head, I strongly suggest giving this So-Cal head a thorough audition. I bought one because of my overwhelmingly positive experience with my Epiphone... read more [+] Blues Custom 30.I play Les Pauls, and with them, I can get a really "woody" tone out of this amp, ala Billy Gibbons or Warren Haynes. It can be tweaked to produce a tighter metalic HM crunch as well. Clean tone is sweet and the tube driven spring reverb has amazing depth. The basic circuit of the So-Cal is the same as the BC 30 with one major difference, the So-Cal has Solid State rect, asdoes Marshall or Mesa. This increases the DC voltage and givesthe strong, Marshall type output. The other thing is, this amp has AMAZING clean and dirty headroom and honestly sounds as good turned way down as it does way up. I am COMPLETELY impressed with all of Epiphones tube amps. I heard that The So - Cal Is being discontinued. If thats true I cant imagine why, but it's all the more reason to buy one if you were thinking about it. This amp will become scarce on the used market, already is, and when it does, prices will not drop much, if at all. For 1200.00 this would be a fine amp. For 499.00,its a giveaway. I am that juiced on this amp.If you prefer combo's and twins, check out the blues custom. Its almost the same amp, but with 6L6 output tubes instead of this amps EL34's, and it has a Tube rectifier which lowers voltage and total output somewhat, but gives you gorgeous, magnificent compression, sustain and warmth in return.Get rid of the Line 6 Kiddy stuff and get some of this serious good stuff. no lie. close [-]
