From Our Research Team:

An amazing songwriting tool!

Unlimited sound-on-sound recording! Many song ideas start out as a basic chord progression, then grow to include layer after layer of new parts. Now you can capture the inspiration and develop your ideas with the amazing Sound on Sound handheld/tabletop recorder from Korg. While it works wonderfully as a standard "point and shoot" recorder, the magic of the SOS is in its namesake.

The Sound on Sound recorder lets you record one part on top of another, an unlimited number of times, letting you transform a musical idea into a full-on song. Play in one guitar part, layer in another, then put bass underneath it all — how far you take it is up to you. Why not perform in 10 different guitar layers for a really standout sound? Whatever you do, the SOS has an undo/redo function that helps you make sure you're getting only the best takes.

It gets cooler, though. Once you connect the Sound on Sound to your computer, you can easily separate all the tracks and load them into your favorite DAW. That makes it an amazingly handy tool for the recording songwriter. You'll also appreciate the convenient angled design; the SOS fits comfortably in your hand but also sits nicely on the tabletop when you need a hands-free recording solution.

Fun, but beware it does not work as advertised

by sonofrino from Los Angeles, CA

Obviously, you are not going to record high quality audio with this thing, but you should expect that from a device at this price range. I accept that, and think this is a interesting and fun device.... read more [+] However, the instructions expressly state that you do not need headphones for this device which is FALSE. Once you record one track and then attempt to overdub with the internal microphone, you will NOT be able hear what you originally recorded without headphones. So, if you think you can sing into this device and overdub additional vocal parts using the internal microphone and without headphones, you are mistaken, although Korg clearly states that this is possible. I called Korg technical support and they confirmed that headphones are required when overdubbing using the internal microphone. Korg should do the right thing and explain that headphones are REQUIRED. close [-]

OK, But Not Great At All.

by Larry Handley from Louisville, KY
April 4, 2011
Music Background: Composer, Bassist
This is at best an "okay" device. It's bulky and wedge-shaped, and the overall size (which is hard to judge in pictures) makes it very inconvenient as a handheld/carry-around device. The display, beca... read more [+]use of the low resolution and strange font, is very hard to read in too many cases, and the menu system is atrocious; if there's a way to directly access a particular menu, I couldn't find it; it was necessary to go through them in a linear fashion, going through those you don't need to get to the one you do need. I also didn't like the fact that the various LEDs were behind the mesh; hard to see at an angle.

The sound wasn't bad, but one problem is that it's hard to set track levels, the result being that if you, like me, are lookng at this device because you want to hum several parts of a musical idea and have them layered over each other, the balance is so terrible that some parts are drowned out (some ideas come so quickly that there's just no time to pull out and hook up an instrument, and I often get some of my best ideas with I'm NOT at home anyway). Perhaps playing actual instruments would be better, who knows?

The speaker was hard to hear, even at full volume, but this could have been from recording at a lower mic level, but still, it should have been loud enough to hear well, even at the lowest mic level. I had to put the thing up to my ear and still could just barely hear it.

I suppose some of these issues might have been resolved if I had just played around with this more, but the overall feel and design just made it not worth it. I knew I'd be returning it a few minutes out of the box. Just not up to par. close [-]

Only spent 10 bucks on my first purchase, but you treated me as if was spending a grand. Being an independent business owner, I know all to well the importance of dedicated customer service which is the best way to win over the corporate chains. Tootsie Rolls always win me over too. I'm sure some much bigger purchases are in our future.
