Tactile control of your mix with FireWire convenience
Computer-based DAWs seem to have virtually no limitations-except those imposed by using a mouse to do the job of dedicated hardware. ProjectMix I/O finally puts all that tactile control back under your fingertips. It also combines that control with M-Audio's acclaimed FireWire audio interface technology, eliminating clutter while integrating everything you need to transform your computer-based music system into a full-fledged digital audio workstation.

Analog and digital I/O with eight mic preamps
ProjectMix I/O gives you just about every kind of I/O you might need for a session-and at the same price as many control surfaces lacking audio altogether. Eight analog input channels all feature 1/4" balanced and XLR microphone inputs with individual mic/line switches. Of course, phantom power is provided for up to eight condenser mics and input 1 even features a front-panel instrument input so you easily plug a guitar or bass right in. 8 x 8 ADAT Lightpipe I/O brings the simultaneous input total to 16 and allows you to expand your system with devices like M-Audio's award winning Octane preamp. This allows for eight more channels of preamp via Lightpipe. 2 x 2 S/PDIF handles all your other digital connectivity, and word clock synchronizes ProjectMix with other digital devices.

MIDI I/O plus multiple monitoring options
ProjectMix I/O also serves as a 1 x 1 MIDI interface, allowing your computer to connect with MIDI hardware. Monitoring options include two 1/4" headphone outputs with separate volume controls for working with a partner, as well as two stereo output pairs for routing to monitors, processors and mixdown devices. There's even an A/B headphone source monitoring switch for cueing. ProjectMix I/O brings all of this to your computer with a single, simple FireWire connection.

Illuminated transport controls
Dedicated transport controls are another feature that makes doing sessions with ProjectMix I/O a breeze. You get illuminated controls for record, play, stop, fast forward, and rewind, plus a jog/shuttle wheel and locate buttons for easy project navigation. Sets of keys for in/out points, zoom, region nudge, looping and more will having your flying through sessions with incredible efficiency.

Very easy to use, with logical layout
M-Audio's design team gave a great deal of consideration as to what features would provide the most value in the ProjectMix I/O. They knew that cutting-edge features like high-resolution 10-bit touch-sensitive moving faders, large LCD display and mic/line switches on all channels were important. They also found that much of the expense of other units on the market owed to a dizzying number of controls that many users find daunting. M-Audio engineers opted for a streamlined design that places some ProjectMix I/O functions under the control of the keyboard and mouse, where they are best suited. The result is a controller that doesn't have much of a learning curve, is much more intuitive to use and comes in at an unbeatable price. Check out ProjectMix I/O for yourself - we think you'll agree.

10-bit touch-sensitive moving faders for precision
The motorized touch-sensitive faders on each of ProjectMix I/O's eight channel strips and master strip record and playback your changes, making for seamless mix automation. And touch sensitivity means that when you touch a fader in motion, it immediately disengages for manual control and re-engages automation when you release. This provides for both smoother operation and the elimination of motor burnout prevalent in older technologies. ProjectMix I/O's faders also feature higher resolution than other control surfaces in its price range.

Bank-switchable channel strips
ProjectMix I/O's eight channel strips can map to as many channels as your project by simply pressing the bank +/- and channel +/- controls. Each channel strip features all of the functions you'd expect to help you zip through sessions, including buttons for mic/line, record enable, mute, solo, and select. In addition to a touch-sensitive motorized fader, each of the ProjectMix I/O's strip has an endless rotary encoder knob whose function is assigned by one of 15 dedicated buttons for EQ, aux send and more. Related information is displayed in the LCD window directly above each encoder. The encoders and LCD double to control assigned plug-in parameters as well.

Pro Tools M-Powered Compatible
With Pro Tools M-Powered and an M-Audio interface, you can work anywhere, anytime with the industry standard in music production software! You can open sessions created in Pro Tools M-Powered software with any Windows XP or Mac OS X Digidesign Pro Tools TDM or LE system, giving you unprecedented production options for your music. Sweetwater Advice

Chris McCown
Eight mic pres, motorized faders, and compatibility with all major DAWs - the Project Mix I/O is an excellent choice for those seeking more connectivity than what they are currently using, or looking to integrate currently owned ADAT lightpipe-equipped gear to a control surface. Perfect for project studios, portable live recording rigs, and for anyone looking to step up to more I/O.

Excellent addition to the studio, easy and quick to understand

I had worries when I bought this due to the 1 person that reviewed this and said it was so-so. He obviously hasn't read the manual. Every problem he has with this is addressed in the manual, though ... read more [+]he is correct about the master fader. I love the project mix. It frees me from observiing changes I'm making on the screen to LISTENING to the changes. The manual is quick and easy to read. I learned how to use this in less than 4 hours. If I didn't choose to read the manual, I still would have been able to use this within 15 minutes. User friendly and smart design. It leaves the appropriate operations up to the mouse and the I/O features are amazing. It works with every plug-in I own (Waves/Ozone/Massey). I was very surprised at how much I like it. My friend just got the Digi 003 and this is a comparable product for the price. If you are thinking about it, do it. It works better with Pro-Tools M-powered than my M-Audio 1814. I haven't had one DAE error to date and Pro tools hasn't locked up on me once. Buy this. close [-]

I like it!

I've had the M-Audio Project Mix for close to a year now. It works great for tracking and mixing in my Sonar based home studio. Nice readout, nice faders that you can be way more precise with than a m... read more [+]ouse.

The master fader works in Sonar. My only gripe is the rewind botton won't work in Sonar or at least mine dos'nt. It would be cool if they made a nice overlay for the contoller, for specific platforms i.e. Pro-tools or Sonar ect... so I would'nt have to remember what some of the buttons do.

But overall I like using the Project Mix. It's definetly well made, sturdy, looks killer and hasn't given me any problems. Load software and drivers and get to recording and mixing. close [-]

Good stuff but not for me

Need to know first that I used to work with Motu 896 HD paired with Nuendo 2 without control surface. So I've learned how to make use of my (pc) keyboard eficiently. Then my studio brought a Projectmi... read more [+]x with a bunch of mac G5 dual screen. My first impression was: WOW, such a waste! For me, I will be very happy just for another screen to my pc and maybe any control surface only. But I'm only a worker and told that from now on our studio main gear should be mac based protools, with digidesign hardware as future improvement.
So I start to learn how to use all of that stuffs. My method was straight to practical, and if i got stuck, I look for it in the manual.
Projectmix was very easy to use, but I found several strange things like very lazy buttons that's need several tap to working (mutes, solos, arms and zooms). Also it's often makes protools behave strange after several hours. The occurence squence almost identical: begin with strange characters apear at the projectmix display and then followed by protools error, still responding but cannot play or record. Also sometime if I open a protool session, especially a big one, an error occured, telling that protools cannot comunicate with HUI device.
I've tried with my old system (nuendo, cubase, sonar, live+pc) and these two problems not occured, except for the lazy buttons.
And yes, the master fader was a waste with protools but not the case with nuendo, cubase, sonar and ableton live.
About sound quality, if we talk about converter, I think the main focus was in the analog to digital conversion, that's why most people called it converter. So pre amps was'nt my main considerations and except for testing purpose, I always use line ins for recording.
In this field I found Motu superior to Projectmix. In many cases I unable to change buffer size. The hardware control panel doesnt help much. I have no complain with latency, but once my session grows and too hard to handle in small buffer size there's no other solution than increasing it, and in this Projectmix control panel it is provided but I just cannot change it. This probably driver problem but there is no internet conection in the studio, I still using one that came with the package.
By the way, somehow I found Motu sounds better, but this was very subjective matter.
About control surface, well, like mentioned before, I used to work with keyboard and found no significant benefit on it except for a little profesional looks. close [-]

So So

When i first saw this in a magazine I instantly fell in love with it. After a year i picked one up. I must say my mixing gets done faster and i really feel like im working in a pro studio. Nothing lik... read more [+]e touching those faders. However the drawbacks of this unit make me wish Digi or M-audio had done a way better job. Fiirst of all You can't use the master fader in pro tools its controlled by one of the eight faders. Which is big upset for me. The jog wheel could have been used better for at least scrolling. and using plugins is very tiresome when trying to tweak them from the controll surface. Either i haven't read the manuel clearly or it just tell me how to skip between plugin parameters. However I"m still happy with my unit and wouldn't sell ituntil soemthing else better comes along. But for 1200 dollars in my opinion is way to much for the limited features they only allowed in this unit. close [-]
