Simply the best!

By Sweetwater Customer from WA on April 19, 2024

I've had my Spark40 for 2 years now and have found it to have the best sounds and most versatility of any small practice amp.

Awesome!

By Brett from Wisconsin on March 4, 2024 Music Background: Hobbyist

An awesome amp, with the app it is a game changer as it for me anyway gives practice a element of added fun playing with a sound track it gives a band feel. Helping with the rhythm and tempo. Not to mention all the different amp and effects combos. Plus it can be ran through a speaker cab. Awesome!

Great practice amp with a multitude of features.

WOW!

By James Alexander from Anderson, IN on January 30, 2024

Never owned an amp like this. Does AMAZING things. And, in opposition to what some say, it is definitely large enough for giving a small venue. Play in a jazz standards combo with keyboard and light percussion. Plenty loud for us. For doing Hendrix covers in a small venue? Probably not. But, it meets my needs perfectly.

Positive Grid Spark Combo Amp

By Sweetwater Customer on January 25, 2024 Music Background: Beginner

I'm a beginner with an acoustic and electric guitar and thus far, the Positive Grid Spark Combo Amp has been helpful in my quest to learn how to play. The associated app which you can search for nearly any song, is helpful and has ability to show chords and slow things down. It's also nice to be able to use the Positive Grid Spark Combo Amp as a pretty loud and clear Bluetooth speaker. A little expensive yes, but overall worth it to me due to its versatility.

Most Exciting Innovation To Modern Amplifiers

By Brian Ramos from Naples, FL on January 10, 2024 Music Background: Singer/ Songwriter/ Musician for the band afterHARLEY.

To start with, I'm not one for reviews. However, with the utmost sincerity I had to write a review many people like me needed to read. I have had my share of amplifiers over the years; Solid State, Tube, Hybrid, and have loved the versatility of tones I have accumulated over the years. I've even owned a Positive Grid Guitar and Bass Rack Amplifier. Unfortunately, due to the cost of living in my area rapidly outpacing wages, I was forced to place my collection in storage and get something that wasn't too loud, but could hold its own weight, and after hours and hours of reviews, videos, tutorials I was determined to try both a Fender Mustang GTX50, and the Positive Grid Spark 40.

After lengthy experiences with both amplifiers at a local music shop, the biggest and baddest of them all was this incredible amplifier. To start with, the biggest feature - Tone Cloud. After hours and hours of searching for artist after artist, I have yet to scratch the surface of the immense amount of stunning presets users have created. The social aspect of musicians is huge and what they've been able to create and share can all but guarantee that someone, somewhere, has created the foundation for you to build on and truly make any sound your own. Over 10,000 presets (an overwhelming number for anyone) will definitely keep you searching for inspiration, and building incredible tones. From tube emulations to solid state solutions, what positive grid has managed to accomplish with this amplifier surpasses what even the most critical tone junkies could ever fathom.

The construction and aesthetics are of both high caliber and beauty. The I/O, the wireless connectivity, the Bluetooth features, all work nearly flawlessly and get better with each firmware update and patch. The most incredible part is this amplifiers ability to not only handle and reproduce beautifully, but record in high fidelity bass and acoustic and electric guitars truly makes this the only amplifier you will ever need again. 5/5 stars on all of these features.

As for the cons, there is only one I could find. The sheer amount of bass heaviness. While it's perfectly balanced for bass and acoustic, electric guitars seem to muddy the waters when played through, and this is all due to the bass port just under the front grill. I managed to find forums of people stuffing socks or other semi porous materials into the bass port and that seemed to work wonders.

This amplifier may not be as clear or as loud as a tube amp, but that's okay. It doesn't need to be. It's a practice/recording amp, and what it does, it does best in its class. I definitely recommend the Spark 40 to anyone from beginners to the most experienced players who want to build and make their own sounds, practice at home or on the couch. Definitely worth every penny.

Great little amp

By Sweetwater Customer on January 2, 2024 Music Background: Playing music 30+ years

This thing is a ton of fun. The sound volume and quality that comes from this tiny little amp is astonishing. The tone cloud feature is really cool, and there's some great sounds to be had on it. It doesn't really weigh much, or take up any space, which makes it easy to move from room to room without hassle. If I had one complaint, I've noticed that a couple of the tone cloud tones cut out at low volume, but realized that slightly increasing the gain or volume in the spark app, then turning down the amp seems to solve the issue. I love that you can look up and play backing tracks through the amp so easily. Great practice tool, and will work out well for me at band practice, as my drummer practices with an electric kit. I can't recommend this amp enough. It is the best $ I've maybe ever spent on music equipment. I've got a really nice tube amp, the spark rivals it in tone quality, and can be turned down to a volume where my neighbors don't hear a thing. The most surprising feature is the ability to play music through the amp using Spotify. It sounds considerably better and is louder than another huge name blue tooth speaker I own that cost almost 2x as much. I've used it as a Bluetooth speaker, guitar amp, bass amp (best practice bass amp I've ever heard) and plugged it into the computer to try out the recording functionality, it has exceeded my expectations in every area. Get one, you won't regret it

Best Amp I have ever bought!!!!!

A product is a product...
But what really makes the difference is the real person that you have to rely on for help, information, and guidance.
Josh Kattner was my sales engineer for my first purchase from Sweetwater- the Spark 40. My experience with Josh and Sweetwater was a positive and reassuring one. I've developed a great level of confidence in Sweetwater and their staff. Despite Thanksgiving having been in the way, I received the Spark in less than a week and everything was perfect.
Thank you, Josh.

Excellent!

By Josh Tollison from Guntown, Ms on December 18, 2023

I was a little skeptical of this because I'm not a real tech savvy person. Super easy to use through the app and it sounds amazing. This amp will do it all. Not to mention the exceptional customer service

Excellent practice/recording amp

By Thomas Cox from APOPKA, FL on December 14, 2023

This is an excellent amp for practice and recording. Highly recommend this for NEW guitarists due to its chord progression tools.

Went way over expectations!

By Braxton on December 8, 2023

I kept hearing on YouTube people saying the sound is so much bigger in the room that what comes across on YouTube. It's true. The sound is big and beautiful. The reverb is amazing. The sound seems to come from all over the room. And, of course the software/app is every bit as awesome is the amp.

I'll add to that this is my second purchase from SweetWater because the shipping is amazing. They pack everything in a way that nothing will go wrong. And, one more thing... the tech on the phone that processed my order, Kevin Rowan, is super cool, patient, and knowledgable.

Spark Amp

Very good little amp. Good sounds and effects

A portable solution with plenty of bite.

By Rafael Lara-Martinez from Snoqualmie, WA on October 4, 2023 Music Background: Home studio. Prior live performance and studio experience.

I bought the Spark go on a whim and was shocked by how loud and clear it was, even with the bass. Stepped up to the spark 40 and I'm glad I did. I have heard about the low end issues with the spark 40, but honestly playing a bass through it so satisfying. Because of the beefiness to the low end. You can also use the app eq to cut down on this issue. I guess I'm trying to say, I don't mind it. Suit my playing style just fine. It's versatile, portable and loud enough to make it a decent practice amp. Very happy with my purchase.

Best Gear For Practice

By Sweetwater Customer on September 13, 2023

I've bought sooo much gear to get the sound that I wanted that I neglected to actually practice guitar. What sets this apart from all the other modelers and desktop amps is that the software is built around actually playing and practicing. And you still get some cool sounds out of it. I can't recommend it enough.

Positive Spark 40 - GREAT Amp

By Ron Jump from Lexington, KY on July 6, 2023

I bought the Spark 40 about seven weeks ago after seeing the amp online and doing my research on exactly what it was. It was shipped fast from Sweetwater (Great Service!!!). I have waited until now to do a review as I wanted to use it and play with it and get some experience with it. First, I used it without the app....and then with the app. I also bought a battery where I could take it anywhere and play it. I played it at a family reunion (one large room and no drums) with the battery and it was very loud and the volume was more than needed to do that, This is a great little amp!!! In using the app..it is more versatile...there are many pedals and amps to choose from. I went into the Tonecloud and downloaded a setting someone else made....it was so easy to do and it was gorgeous sounding. This amp is great for all the features it has. I have had no issues with it and I love it as a practice amp. Sweetwater is my number one store for buying music equipment. Sweetwater is Great Service, Great Support, items in stock and Fast shipping. I thank Chris Goldbach...for his help and great communication!!!

I had no idea!!!

By Dennis Walker from Fremont, MI on July 3, 2023

I bought this hoping it would be decent for bass. I was concerned about volume level. We'll the bass hasn't made it yet but this thing is just awesome for guitar! If you're curious, go for it! I haven't even touched the app and I'm just blown away. Plenty of volume. 30+ years slinging my axe through tube amps. If you're a tube fan, like myself, put your fears to rest.

Awesome!!

By Michael Ricono from HECTOR, AR on June 30, 2023 Music Background: Novice

Now understand... many of you are professionals and are used to quality equipment. Being a true hobbyist... This is truly a "fun" amp. Love the ability to experiment with different sounds without having to invest in a ton of hardware. I've only had the amp for a month, but I sure hope it continues to work like it currently does.

Amazing!

By Bob Davis from Fleetwood, NC on June 19, 2023

This is NOT a gigging amp! But if you want to practice through a Marshall, Hiwatt, Orange, Fender or any other amp you can think of, this is what you want. I have about 40 electric guitars, but I mostly play vintage Les Paul Juniors. Using a Marshall profile on the Spark, I can blow myself away with a wall of Marshall stacks - seriously, at a dangerous volume as I'm sitting 2 feet away from this thing. I'm 64, and typically app-averse for an old guy, but once I starting diving into all the control the Positive Grid software offers, it was like discovering an entirely new world of sound. I have a few other small amps - '63 Princeton, 3 Monkeys Sock Monkey, 3 Monkeys Orangutan, Jr, but I use this amp every single day. At a lower volume and with much more versatility. I can only offer it the highest praises. And it won't break the bank.

Better Late than Never.... Glad I am in the train now LOL...

By Marty from Los Angeles CA on March 3, 2023 Music Background: Singer Song writer

I am a bit late to get this pleasant companion LOL. Don't have to feed her and she treats me better than anyone and even listens to my commands.
This thing opened up all my lost channels. Now I can play with any band I want . Pretty amazing tones it has and all my guitars present themselves as anew. Tried it on my acoustics , Strats and Telles , my LP-s and PRS-s . The best sound that I got was from my Martin Dreadnought Acoustic Electric. Felt like I am in a concert hall. What can I say it is not a toy you cannot compare with tube amps but the versatility of its sounds will make you play in many genres and open up all your creative cells. Thanks to my great Sales Engineer Collin Blue who gave me a great service as usual....

The Best Practice Amp You'll Ever Own

By Joe Chandler from Tallulah, LA on January 31, 2023 Music Background: Untalented grinder

I love this thing. No, it's not a gigging amp, and you'll have to figure out those settings on your own, but for practicing in your living room, combined with the phone app, you can sound like all the people whose songs you're trying to learn. It's quite easy, too. Don't like your tone? Hit a button on your phone, and sound like someone completely different. It's a good sounding amp all on its own...definitely better than the Boss Cube I have, but amazing with the app. Only downside is that it's not battery powered, so portability suffers. This thing has made me a better player, because it's so much more fun to play along with songs when you sound like the song you're playing along to.

Fantastic Amp.. Even better service

By Anthony Nutile from TOWNSEND, MA on December 30, 2022 Music Background: Hobby Guitar Player of 37 years.

Lets start with the service... After receiving a few gift cards, I ordered the Amp on Christmas evening. Later, I went to Positive Grid's website to learn more about how to use it when it arrives. I found that their site was running a significant deal with a much lower price than I had just paid. I then went to the Sweetwater site and emailed Chris through the site asking if they would be able price match the sale Positive Grid was offering. Now keep in mind, I paid for half of the Amp with gift cards, so they knew that I was pretty much locked into buying the Amp from them. However, the following day (not only did the Amp ship right out) I received a voice mail and an email from Chris letting me know that they would be crediting the difference back to my credit card. Again, I was half expecting that he would offer me a credit to my gift cards, ensuring I still use the money with them, but he didn't... He applied it to my credit card... This is the kind of service that creates lifelong customers... And Chris has done that.

As for the Amp, it arrived in great condition 2 days later and when I say setting it up couldn't have been easier, it really couldn't have been easier. I downloaded the app to my iPhone and it asked if I wanted to sign in using my Apple ID. I chose that option and I was immediately signed in. I turned on the Amp and it immediately connected to my phone. I plugged in my guitar and within 2 minutes I was cranking away on this thing. The stock sounds a really good, but I ended up spending the next two hours scrolling through the sounds in cloud like a **** kid in a candy store! The sounds are uploaded by users, so they're a bit hit or miss, but who cares.. They're all free. Also, because it logged me in through my Apple ID, it pulled in my Apple Music and now I have access to all my music through the Spark app, which is great because it also serves as an amazing bluetooth speaker. Lastly, I was blown away by the apps integration to YouTube with a slew of suggested backing tracks to choose from. After I found the sound I wanted, I played along with several recommended backing tracks and let me say that this Amp has reignited my love of playing the guitar. OH! And I forgot to mention, when I went to listen to a song from my own playlist, it pulled up an instructional chart showing me the chords in real time with the sing in case I wanted to play along!! SIMPLY AMAZING... My only disappointment is that I can't give this service and product more than 5 stars. Thank you Sweetwater, you're the best!

Killer!

By JD3 from Florence, SC on November 30, 2022

Great little practice amp. Loaded with features and sounds awesome. The app will keep you engaged for hours. In the 3 weeks I've owned this, I've only just scratched the surface of the tonal possibilities. Sturdy and well made.

Positive Grid Spark Combo Amp

By Christopher Dale from Franklin, MA on November 11, 2022 Music Background: Old dog learning new tricks

If you want a very portable amp that you can set-up almost anywhere without lugging the heavyweight monster, then this amp succeeds and almost forces you to practice more! It is surprisingly loud and has a full sound especially given the size of the speakers. I easily managed to get the Spark app working on my crappy phone and in just minutes was playing a wide range of presets from the app library. Yes you can critique a number of aspects of this amp however the convenience of having this amp situated just about anywhere and thus being able to strap on a guitar and just play using a huge variety of sounds makes this a winner. I have probably doubled my daily guitar time. (PS : If you telework then don`t forget to mute your mike during zoom calls !)

The Best Practice Amp Yet!!

By Sweetwater Customer on October 6, 2022 Music Background: Guitar player for 54 years. 70s and 80s rock are naturally my thing, with a special emphasis on EVH. I also like country and some jazz too.

Clever features like the smart jam-along and chord analyzer are awesome, but for me it's the SOUNDS/TONES!! The amp models punch WAY above this price range. They sound authentically like real amps, including all the harmonic complexity you expect from a tube amp, and even project a huge 'size' for the tones beyond the amp's own small footprint. Even the sparkly clear tones impress and inspire hours of Tele playing for me, a first for this kind of amp. I'm an EVH acolyte and the 'Treadplate' model in this amp nails his brown sound from the first album, matching, or even besting, my EVH 5150 LBX-II 'lunchbox' tube amp. I also own two Yamaha THR amps, which I also love, but this thing is simply better, has more amp models and effects, and with its extra features, and significantly lower price, is a much better value too. The Positive Grid engineers deserve all the credit they have earned for creating this delicious little piece of kit. The various amps lack knobs like 'presence' and 'resonance', but there is an EQ pedal that operates post-amp that can be tweaked to natch those functions. It has dozens of effects instead of hundreds, but this simplifies tweaking. That said, I still use my actual analog phase 95 pedal ro get Eddie's tone as the modeled phaser effect isn't quite as authentic. Delay and reverb are wonderful though, sounding as good as those in my more expensive THR amps. Some complain that the tones are bass heavy but that, and the unit's slightly bigger speakers (for this genre), contribute to the tones having real girth. Again, use the EQ pedal to modify to taste. I believe that you can probably get just about any sound you want from this amp as delivered, but they also offer new amp models you can download for about $20 each, something no competitive amp offers. I can't recommend this thing enough. All of my other amps just sit now for my home playing; I play only the Spark. I'll soon be getting the multi-button footswitch for it too! GET ONE OF THESE AMPS….and return it if you don't like it. I'm betting that if you take the time to hook it up to your smartphone and tweak some tones of your own, that you won't be sending it back!!

The perfect practice solution.

By Matt Harris from Huntertown, IN on September 13, 2022

Whether I am sitting down work on some serious practice or I'm just trying to get a quick jam in, this amp is perfect. Sounds great and is easy to use. The app makes dialing in great tones super easy and quick. Super intuitive!

Outstanding Product/Service

By Doug Belew from Lawrenceville, GA on September 8, 2022

Josh set me up perfectly, answered all my questions and my candy arrived today in perfect condition.

He also got my home number erased from their records. My wife doesn't need to know that I bought another package of candy from Sweetwater.

Overall, the selection was very typical. One of each, in an almost hermitocally sealed package: Bit-O-Honey, Atomic Fire Ball, Smarties, Tootsie Roll and a peppermint. I could stand something other than the peppermint, but overall, a solid assortment and a great value.

Also, they included a complimentary Spark 40. I thought that was a nice touch.

The amp of the future! Totally worth all of the hype!

By Dennis from Fontana, CA on September 8, 2022 Music Background: Deathcore/Metalcore Vocalist and Guitarist

I bought this amp on a whim after seeing tons of YouTube videos singing its praises. To be honest, I was a bit letdown at first. I connected the amp to the app and used the "tone cloud" to find various metal tones for my guitar, but most of them sounded extremely fuzzy or extremely bass heavy. Most of the guitar tones sounded nothing like that I was shown in the YouTube videos, but then I realized all of the guitarists in those videos were plugging their amps through recording software and playing through their studio speakers which probably made a huge difference in sound. Thankfully, I discovered a recent update on the app that made a HUGE difference and made me appreciate this amp. Now, the amp models include the addition of an EQ pedal where you can better dial in your metal tones and it has certainly won me over now. The guitar tones now sound crushing even when playing straight through the amp. Color me impressed. I'm still discovering how to tweak the different pedals and amp settings to the get perfect sound. The sky is the limit and the possibilities are endless with this amp. I'm also blown away with how incredibly loud this amp is despite how tiny it is. I wasn't sure upon the first couple days after I picked up this amp, but I'm definitely a believer now.

WINNER

By K B from Washington State on August 31, 2022

Very impressive sound for something so compact. All the modeling features available are fun and intuitive.

Even if you just want plain and simple (THAT'S ME) and you aren't big on the modeling aspect, you can really dial in a tone and jam with this thing as a stand alone.

I like that it doubles as a bluetooth speaker. We use it for watching movies and sporting events in the living room when its not being a guitar amp. Its sounds tons bigger and better with a comparable JBL for the same task.

The unit has TWO bluetooth channels that show up on the discoverable devices list. And its because you can stream anything you want to the thing from your TV or what ever and also have it tethered to your phone or tablet for a metronome or modeling.

COOLER THAN I EXPECTED. I AM BUYING ANOTHER ONE.

Outstanding Amp!

By Sweetwater Customer on August 28, 2022

Our bandmate turned us onto this amplifier, and we haven't looked back! Being able to adjust virtual pedals remotely, play audio files through the amplifier while jamming along, amazing sound, small footprint, etc. Nothing bad to say about it. Get one and you won't regret it.

For a good time.....

By Doug from Springfield, IL on August 23, 2022 Music Background: My bar days are over. Now I just play for me

I have been looking at this amp for over a year and finally pulled the trigger.
I could not be more pleased with it.
The tones are great and it is more than enough amp to jam as loud as you could possibly want in the guitar room.
Well worth the hype.

Practice amp reinvented

By Howie from Cherry Valley, PA on August 10, 2022 Music Background: Experienced

Okay, The Positive Grid Spark is like the Tesla of practice amps. The designers completely re-thought the practice amp and came up with a smart New Age approach. The features are too many to mention. But the UX is outstanding and intuitive. On one hand, it's the simplest effects unit when coupled with an Apple device. The pre-sets are okay, but customizing them is a breeze. And the tonecloud offers thousands of what in many cases are high quality patches at the touch of a button. Explore the sounds of your favorite guitarist with the search feature. And the library seems to grow every week. Even without couplings the amp with an Apple device, it holds it's own as a standalone amp. And it's plenty loud for a practice amp. There are enough hardware knobs to explore tones to your hearts content. It's the most versatile piece of equipment in my rig. And it looks good enough to park on an end table and not suffer the ire of my interior designer wife. She even wants to use it as a Bluetooth speaker at her company Christmas party. This amp is a great bang for the buck.

To me it's a game charger!

By Dave on August 10, 2022 Music Background: play for 25 years, church gig

First and foremost, this amp SOUNDS great. It's dynamic, responsive and full of great tones. The effects (especially delay and reverb) are excellent, which I cannot say for my other smaller practice amps.

Secondly, the versatility and flexibility are unparalleled. Tweaking presets is very intuitive, and it is easy to customize, create, and share presets with other users. The option to integrate play-along tracks, jam tracks and pre-recorded music from streaming services is hugely valuable for someone like myself that teaches guitar lessons regularly.

Finally, the hardware is well made. It's high quality and gives you all of the tactile sensations you could ask for if you are more of a knob-turner rather than a screen-tapper.

Reasonably priced and worth every bit of it

By Marc on July 21, 2022 Music Background: Beyond beginner at 50

The Positive Grid Amp was recommended to me by a "real" musician as a great amp for a small indoor gathering or outdoors on a patio to entertain. Most important it is perfect for me as I learn new songs, download features that automatically select setting, and try to impress my wife and kids. It is a perfect "first" amp. I would not recommend less expensive amps that are short on features. I have done that and outgrew it quickly. This amp will last a lifetime.

I have been ,"out of the know" on the latest technology offered until a friend showed me her Spark. I fell in love with it immediately and had one on the way within minutes. Two weeks prior I had purchased a Fender amp and returned it after ordering mine from Sweetwater. Love everything about the amp and the company. The customer service is top drawer. So glad I discovered this outstanding source for all things musical!

Love the sound and power of this “little” amp!

By Eddie Lee on April 18, 2022

A better sounding amp for recording and performance that I haven't seen before in any modeling amp. Pairing it with the Spark app is easy and even easier to create and save your own preset sounds. Not to mention the choice of amp modeling is extensive with classic and modern amps and speaker configurations as well as hundreds of effects to use and modify to your own style and sound.

There is also a Jam Along feature that allows you to play along with your iTunes music while it displays the chords changes! You can also connect easily to any DAW for a clean and smooth transition to recording. All around flexibility and a sound to match and for the price, amazing !

Amazing tiny amp!

Beginner still trying to figure it out

By Ray Robinson from WI on December 19, 2023 Music Background: Still learning

The biggest reason I bought this amp was for the tones and ease of finding them, and it does just that very well. Later down the road I will worry about all the other features that it has to offer, but for right now I am completely blown away by the tone cloud. It offers me less time trying to figure out a tone on my pedal board which leaves me more time to practice. If there is one little complaint I have, it has to be the blue tooth speaker feature. There are no EQ adjustments and it just sounds a little too bassy(if thats a word) and flat. Overall I am glad I finally talked myself into this thing cause it is really a game changer

The sounds available just aren't as good as other products you can get however the usability of this thing as a practice amp just outclasses everything else out there.

Good Amp. Right Price

By Sweetwater Customer on March 15, 2024 Music Background: Novice at best

After some playtime with this amp I can say that it is definitely worth it for a good small practice amp. The features are nice and the app is easy to navigate. Would absolutely recommend this for anyone looking for a practice amp or small traveling gig amp at smaller venues.

Best practice amp I've owned!!

By Britton from TX on December 5, 2023 Music Background: Classically trained musician mostly in trumpet and voice. Love playing metal on guitar and bass.

Got this on a wim as it does it all. I love the app integration and do use. It as my audio interface for recording in my room. One note I will say is don't keep your phone connected to it while recording or it will disconnect from the pc when you get any kind of notification.

Definitive sound

Amazing sounds it will probably cover any style a little tricky getting the preset to leave you alone but once dialed in the Tone is there!

Positive Grid.....

By Bob t from CT on November 10, 2023 Music Background: Playing mostly Acoustic for 20 + years

I've been curious about these amps for a few years now wondering if the would be loud enough to practice with a full band. I've also been a little cautious about buying one as I've seen a lot of these being sold on Used sites. My Bass player showed up to practice with one a few weeks back that he received as a Birthday gift. The band was amazed at it's volume and clarity.
It's a great practice amp for the bass. I decided to buy one hoping that the Acoustic channel sounded as good as the bass setting. I received the Amp and after spending a good 2 hours trying to figure out how to get it working with the online Tone app, I was able to get some very nice clean acoustic sounds. I was also able to program a couple of the pre sets with a nice Electric country tone and a nice Blues Rock tone. So I'm so far very happy with it.
Re: all the used Positive Grid 40's I've seen for sale, I believe it's because 1, people get frustrated trying to learn how to set it up and 2 they over use the app and the tones don't sound good. I'm no expert but this is my gut feelings.....

functions quite well. already made a couple of mods to .10.5 v rechargeable battery pack for complete portability ran for 13+ hours and still going strong. I would have given 5 starsbit the only documentation is online.

The perfect home jamming amp.

Fantastic amp! With room for improvement

By Will from D.C. on February 16, 2023 Music Background: Rock, Metal, blues

This amp is super convenient for someone like me who isn't currently playing with others or in a band. It's perfect for my studio apartment and has headphone capabilities that make it possible to practice all hours of the day and night. The Spark phone app is what makes this amp special and very versatile. If you are on the fence about this amp you can download the free phone app and explore it without having the amp. The amplifier has great tones and you can change the effect pedals and preamps easily. The sound quality is surprisingly clear and strong. Makes my Les Paul sing and my Schecter in drop A growl. The metal tone options are very impressive and nasty, which is a plus.

My only gripes with this amp is 1, the bass tones are limited and are nothing to write home about. As a guitarist and bassist, bass being my primary instrument, I found the bass options disappointing, but not a deal breaker. And 2, the camera option in the app doesn't record audio from the amp via line in, it takes it from your phone/tablet mic which makes having an in-app camera sort of pointless. It would be cool if Spark updated this feature to allow to record line in tracks through the video feature to be able to make professional, high quality videos that way.

The amp does double as an interface so you can record through it and with what little I've played with this feature, it seems to work well! I've been using Logic and it seems to work just fine.

Great practice amp!

By Mark Burleson on June 25, 2022 Music Background: Intermediate hobby guitar player

This little amp will fool you. It's has quite a bit of power and can get pretty loud. It has a ton of great tones and a great app to interact with it. I still haven't figured out everything this amp will do but so far I love it. The only con I have is that it sometimes loses connection with my iPhone.

Spark is an awesome practice amp

By Chris Eriksen from NJ on June 14, 2022 Music Background: Guitar player

This thing is loud and sounds awesome! I really enjoy being able to play along with songs through it, but there are some negatives. Making a Spotify playlist and having it go directly to the Spark app is a great idea, but it doesn't play that specific track. It generally pulls a track from YouTube, which is not usually a big deal, but it's kind of annoying when it's not the same version you wanted to learn. The chord recognition works pretty well, but it's not perfect. There are so many sound options, I haven't gotten to nearly all of them, but I really like the versatility. It's not a stage amp, but I didn't buy it for that purpose and it's louder than you'll ever need in your home. The Bluetooth usually works great, but as with all technology, it sometimes disconnects and I have to reset everything to get it back up and running. Overall, you can't beat it for the price and you can use it as a really loud Bluetooth speaker for a party if you see fit.

This is awesome... Then I really listened to the sound

By Mark VonLaydon from NC on October 10, 2023 Music Background: Playing guitar 40yrs.

First off I purchased mine directly from Positive Grid but I do have some knowledge of the product. That said I loved this at first and it can do all kinds if things good but the sound from the amp has WAY TO MUCH BASS!!! I tried to use a stomp to EQ it out but it just sounds muddy. I love the the integration and effects but they need to look at the speakers that they packed in it. There has to be a away to fix this issue, unfortunately I do not think they will be able to use the existing configuration but I see some cool stuff coming as this is very revolutionary and unfortunately in the same way Adobe uses "revolutionary" that code for It fails to meet expectations. I have faith this will be worked out, so I have a "Positive" outlook on stuff from them to come. As for this unit Try to use an eq in your chain, it helped. have fun.

Good when it works

By Sweetwater Customer on August 10, 2023

Bought my spark during the pre-order. Models sounds are great, but mine had massive amounts of static and hum in any setting with distortion. Now 3 years into ownership the input jack doesn't work at all and the amp just hisses with static even with the guitar unplugged. Great potential if the quality control has gotten better. Never had a device last such a short amount of time.

Terrible App Ruined a Pretty Great Amp

By Paul Jones from Winter Garden, FL on November 11, 2022

I wanted a desktop amp for playing through headphones and went with this one. The sounds this thing can come up with are awesome (through headphones, anyway)! Plus you can play bass through the thing...makes sense as a lot of guitar players also own a bass or two. The bass tones don't sound too shabby either. The price makes it all a no brainer and I was quite happy until I noticed I would lose my bluetooth connection every now and again. Now I can't use the thing without it disconnecting on me. Every single time I use it, I have to stop practice or jamming, restart the app, find my preset, reload the song I was working on, find my place, then reset the loop and tempo. What a pain. This also happens whenever I use any of the features such as the metronome. It's made the amp unusable and has motivated me to just start building a real home studio. Maybe they'll fix the terrible app and I'll be able to use this thing as more than just a coaster for my coffee mug.

Compact little mud machine

By James Broskow from Columbia, MD on January 31, 2024

If you like endlessly fiddling with apps and never reaching anything but a muddy mess, this is for you. Picked this up amidst the hype on release as a practice item for the home office. As much as I tortured the device with EQ settings, could never get any usable tones out of this thing. It might be fun for a beginner to pretend that they are getting a variety of amps and effects, but the basic amp tones are so bad you'll quickly lose interest.

After a year or two I finally sold this at the local GC, so I got about half of my money back. I was ready to dump it at Goodwill.

I bought a little Orange CR35 to replace it and am very pleased with that decision--the best little solid state out there. If you want a modeler though, a small Fender or Vox or Blackstar will serve you so much better.

Time Wasted

By Joshua Cadotte from NEGAUNEE, MI on October 17, 2023

I've spent hours messing around with trying to pair this thing to different devices, downloading drivers and updating firmware. It is not user friendly when it comes using the Bluetooth or updating and downloading all the stuff you buy the amp for. The only thing i can get it to connect to is my phone. Wont connect to my chromebook. Also, you have to have a windows pc or mac to update the firmware. If you dont have either youre screwed on firmware updates. It also sounds like you're playing under water which sounds like crap. I wish I would have had time to screw around with it more when I first got it because it would have been returned. Now I'm stuck with a crappy sounding amp that is a pain to use how it is supposed to be used. I should have went with the Fender Mustang. Highly disappointed.

Common issue for a lot of people

By Sweetwater Customer on September 26, 2023

It is ok for a practice amp, but a LOT of people having major issues, no guitar sound suddenly, static noise, no reliable! They should recall faulty units ! I d never recommend this to anyone! Waste of money, sounds really bad as bluetooth speaker .

Save your money

By Sweetwater Customer from GA on August 18, 2023

You will get this and love it at first. It's convenient sounds good and with the available foot pedal you'll think this is great. It's small, easy to set up, and versatile.

Then one day it'll stop working. You'll turn it on and get no amp sounds whatever... Just a hissing sound. It'll be nothing short of a paper weight.

By that point either you'll get to fight with the warranty if it still applies or spend the shipping costs to have it sent in. First, however they'll tell you to reset it to factory settings or update the firmware but that does nothing.

Dont Buy You've Been Warned

By joel Mallory on July 6, 2023

I've had my"brick" not for for year and a half when it start having intermittent sound cut off lasting up to a couple of minutes while using my guitar or computer. There are a lot reviews concerning sound cut off after having it for a year off on various sites. I wish I would have seen those prior to my purchase.

PG's customer service is truly one of the worse I've encounter and it appears their customer service center is in India or someplace. PG lost my registration information and insisted I provided the order number, then the receipt while giving me the distinct impression they would take of it. If I didnt, then I'd have to pay to ship the Spark 40 to CT (at my cost) and pay between $ and $ for repair. After I tracked down my Amazon order and supplied it, they gave me the same non-warranty information. PG couldnt respond wtf they sought my information. "WT" is truly an imbecile beyond comprehension. "WT", standing alone, is a reason why you shouldnt engage with Pos Grid and their sorry --- products. Notwithstanding, having to ship the amp at your cost to the solely designated repair shop in CT is really a hassle!

Great til it stops working

By Steve Hanson on April 13, 2023

Apparently I have experienced the very common (per the Positive Grid user comments, just google positive grid spark screeching) where after working fine, it suddenly stops working with a guitar/bass and just screeches. It continues to be okay with aux and Bluetooth, it just doesn't work as an amplifier. Support, although courteous, hasn't given anyone on the post a real fix. Factory resets, updating firmware, new power cord are all suggested to no avail.

This isn't Sweetwater's fault (they are always great) but buyer beware.

Decent when it works!

By Sweetwater Customer from NJ on March 29, 2023

I've had this amp for three years and barely used it, maybe 10 hours on it total. It's a cool amp, but then one day it just died. All I get from it now is hiss. Even the Bluetooth effect is gone. Now it's a useless paper weight. Save your money and buy a Blackstar or Line 6 modeling amp.
