Gibson Kirk Hammett "Greeny" Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar - Greeny Burst Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Greeny Burst

Most legendary guitars become famous in the hands of a single player, but “Greeny” can claim three. From Peter Green to Gary Moore to Kirk Hammett, the 1959 Les Paul originally made famous by the Fleetwood Mac co-founder has been regularly honored by Gibson with museum-grade replications, sporting every nick, scratch, and dent of the original. Now, for the first time, the Gibson Kirk Hammett “Greeny” brings the instrument’s iconic tone and signature looks into the company’s standard production line! This guitar flaunts a superlative set of specs common among ’59-style Les Pauls, including a warm-sounding mahogany body, an AAA flame maple top, a chunky late ’50s mahogany neck, and a sleek Indian rosewood fingerboard. However, the Kirk Hammett “Greeny” Les Paul Standard features two Greenybucker pickups, with the neck pickup boasting a flipped-magnet construction, providing you with a spot-on emulation of the “magic” out-of-phase bite that’s graced countless classic tracks across all three guitarists’ careers. After many long years of extremely limited-run Gibson Custom creations, the Gibson Kirk Hammett “Greeny” Les Paul Standard finally brings the fabled tone of the original instrument to the masses.

More than satisfied!

By DP from Houston, TX on January 3, 2024 Music Background: Playing for over 30 years

Couldn't be more happy and satisfied with my Greeny Les Paul! Perfect setup straight out of the box. Pickups sound great. I'm a rock/blues player and this thing has sustain for days. I made sure to wait and pick a top that had some distinctive character. This is my first guitar with a satin finish and I have to say I prefer not only the neck feel but the overall look of the finish. The Greeny appointments definitely give this guitar character and make it stand out. Don't listen to the negative reviews. Try it out for yourself and I think you will be pleasantly suprised.

A real player

By David from IL on December 22, 2023 Music Background: 30 years playing

I was skeptical after reading some of the bad reviews but Sweetwater has a great return policy so I wasn't worried. Wow! What an incredible guitar. The setup is perfect, action and fretboard are ideal for my fingers. My Greeny has no scrape marks and all of the details are dialed in as I would expect. A good test of any electric guitar is to hear how it sounds acoustic. This one chimes perfectly. The flamed maple top is killer and I made sure to pick a good one. I prefer the satin finish over a gaudy gloss and it pays off with the neck feel. I purchased a demo with no cosmetic defects so deduct another $ and I'm a happy guy. Time to shred.

Love it!!

Bought this in Oct 2023. I've hated Gibson for 30+ years. I ordered this to try it figuring I'd return it and I fell in love the second I opened the case. It's amazing beyond words.

Awesome Kirk Hammett "Greeny" Les Paul

By Calvin Simmons from Saint Cloud, FL on December 18, 2023

I am absolutely amazed at how awesome my new Gibson Kirk Hammett "Greeny" Les Paul is! It's stunning to look at, plays extremely well, absolutely is flawless, and arrived in excellent condition. I'd like to give a huge shout out to Jimmy Hart from Sweetwater for his top notch professional customer service and assistance. Seems like I've been searching for years to find the perfect Gibson Les Paul for me and this is the one! I love the way it plays, feels, and looks. The neck is perfect for my hands and the pickups sound great in every position! Thank you once again Jimmy Hart and Sweetwater for knocking it out of the park again! I highly recommend this guitar to others. If you're undecided about whether to buy this or not, go for it! You won't be disappointed.

This guitar exceeded my expectations, plays and sounds fantastic. A special shout out to my sales engineer Jeff Bohan who always is very meticulous to make sure everything is just right and that we are satisfied.

Piece of history

By Michael Atwood from Phoenix AZ on October 25, 2023

This is the first Gibson guitar that I have ever purchased and it is really nice I had concerns because I have seen so many bad stories about Gibson guitars quality control but the one I purchased doesn't have any of those issues. My normal sales rep Tad had a well deserved day off but Cody the gentlemen that helped me was really good looking at other guitars in the inventory that I could not see and he found a great piece for me. This was an investment purchase and I can't say enough good things about the Sweetwater staff and customer service which I believe is the best in the industry.

A Cool Masterpiece , The Greeny ...

By Marty from Los Angeles CA on September 15, 2023 Music Background: Singer Song writer

After playing for 3 months
I can easily say its a great guitar .
No matter what anyone says I would suggest to play the instrument for a while and then make your judgement .
It doesn't need constant tuning . I read in previous Review someone praising the guitar and the pickups and still staying negative saying it's a regular standard Les Paul. My review will say a $50K or 20k Greeny . What a saving and a pleasure . The Guitar is worth every penny and if I had the money wouldn't mind to pay the higher prices. I feel blessed and lucky of owning "My Greeny" . I enjoy playing it every day and I don't think I will stop doing it in a near future. By the way it records very well. Great tone and everything ...

Fantastic Les Paul

By Barry from Washington State on August 18, 2023 Music Background: Lifetime musician

I've owned around 30 Les Paul's and this guitar is fantastic. With these "Greeny Buckers" it sounds like a beast with gain and clean & articulate without. By far my favorite Les Paul i own, and I've got ten of them. I got an absolute one of a kind top on mine, but it seems all of the "greeny's" Sweetwater gets are fantastic. Get one, you'll love it!

Kick Butt Les Paul! ( Chefs Kiss )

By John Jodoin from OSSIPEE, NH on June 26, 2023

This guitar is a players guitar. The " Greeny "'thing is great and a cool story but this model is just a really kick butt Les Paul. Every time is clean , articulate. Toss a little sauce on it and she has swag! This Les Paul does a thing and it's nice and inspiring. It makes me want to play it. Just don't think twice about it. If you're a player , play this , you'll love it. Thanks again Cory great experience from beginning to end.

Greeny

By Chris from New Hampshire on April 19, 2023 Music Background: Been playing over 40 years

Guitar came in 2 days. And it's beautiful. It's a stand alone guitar though. If you want greeny experience you need to spend on the custom shop one. Having said that, this is the nicest Les Paul I have ever played and I have played alot. I love this guitar. So glad I pulled the trigger. I gotta thank my salesman Riley for holding it for me. If you're looking for a Les Paul then you should definitely try this one. Thanks for everything Riley

Greeny, an interesting purchase

By Bush Wookie on September 19, 2023 Music Background: New to the game

Metallica is on a role this year and what a nice way to move into the autumn with a "unique" Gibson Les Paul Standard!

I'll be honest, I'm currently set on playing various Marshall and Gibson LP's.

And I tell you folks, Greeny is a beautiful guitar. It feels chunky, I love the weight, but it plays smooth, clean and bright.

Im currently using it with a 1985 Marshall JCM800 50w dual channel reverb, with a 12" Vintage Celestion 30.
Guitar + Amp = Rock n Roll (pedals not required but wah will definitely be a nice addition)

But wait!!!! Greeny blew my socks off with a Marshall Origin 20 w/ a 2x12 cab!!! It sounded beautiful. I wish I had a reverb option with that combo. Straight guitar to cab.

Anyways! How I figured it out??!

I found a Greeny up for a listing "Demo" at a L&M online and I figured it was worth the hour drive to check it out. And it was, I spotted her immediately!

So I was like, lets do this wise. I grabbed Greeny, a Slash Appetite and a random LP Stnd off the rack. Hooked up a JCM800 100W w/ a 2x12 Hugh&Ket Cab.

Folks… every guitar has it's own feel, it's own snarl or bite.
Purchasing a guitar for thousands of dollars is no joke. It's important to take time to do your individual research before purchasing.

And to be honest if I were to rate the guitars 1-3 it would be:

#1 Random LP Stnd - that guitar sounded more like Slash's remake Appetite. It was a Burgandy Maple Top w/ Cream PGrd. This guitar was a what you'd expect in a Les Paul.

#2 Greeny - the moment you hold the guitar you can feel its beefiness. The out of phase tone was a new thing to me, I had never heard it or played it. And to be honest I was intrigued to learn more.

#3 Appetite - no doubt it's a great guitar. Slash is one of my favourite guitar players and this guitar is no joke! You want those sexy R&fnR tones well you won't have difficulty with any of Slash's line.

At the end of the day!! Greeny won because it brought something new to the Gibson Les Paul Standard table. I get to play my favourite Metallica riffs on a guitar that can bring heavy and melodic tones on a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.

Greeny is a beautiful guitar and I am thoroughly happy with the guitar but at the end of the day everything is personal preference. This was yet another another fun guitar hunt adventure and I hope this helps!!!

Keep Rockin folks!!!

Plekked Greeny - Should Stay in Tune Better

By S Dixit from BRENTWOOD, TN on January 18, 2024

Got to experience the Custom Shop weathered version of this guitar, but could not justify the price tag. Wife got me this guitar as a consolation. Nice instrument. Bit heavy. Tones are nice, especially w the "Greeny" mod position. Got the plek add-on. Honestly a bit disappointed about the set up. Guitar has some trouble staying in tune even with minimal playing. String tension on the high E feels off (and sometimes frets out). Very surprised given the reputation Sweetwater has for attention to detail. Clear difference between this and the Custom Shop version (w a $ price difference, mind you.) Overall its a fine guitar with a less than ideal set up.

Not up to Gibson standards

By Rory Jackson from LAS VEGAS, NV on August 16, 2023

Unfortunately, this just felt like a Gibson faded with a AAA top on it with Greeny pickups. Nothing special about it really. The matte neck felt good. The pickups sounded great too. I would stick with a normal standard unless you really want the greeny pickups, which again sounded great.
