Making me better

By Chuck B from Dayton, Ohio on April 17, 2024 Music Background: Over 35 years of band and home studio experience.

I did a lot of prep work before deciding on this amp, but I am so glad I did.
When I began my research, this was the amp I wanted, but I had concerns. I was worried about only having 4 on board sounds. I really hated the A/B style footswitch I was going to need. The 100 watt works with the better BOSS pedal but the 50 watt does not and I did not want to spend additional $ or more on the 100 watt. Thankfully I kept reading and watching comparison videos because I eventually found the solution to all my worries. I purchased the 50 watt amp, the Airstep Kat footswitch and the Katana Librian app. My phone now talks to my Airstep which talks to my amp. I now have all my sounds with me at all times.
The amp is amazing with great tones, easy portability and volume enough to play with a full band.
I mentioned in my title that it is making me better. It is true. I now practice more. I don't feel like I have to work as hard to make the guitar sound great, the amp takes care of that for me. It is exciting to be able to play all sorts of music and match tones.
Finally, along with being build my own tones in the BOSS tone lab, it is so much fun to go out on the BOSS TONE EXCHANGE website and download free tones other people have put together.
I could not be happier with this purchase and ad always Sweetwater is amazing.

Awesome value and sound

By Sweetwater Customer on April 15, 2024

Out of the box settings are good variety and 0.5watt mode for soft practicing at night or plug in head phones.

I have the 50 EX version with the foot switch plug, but you can run this with an air step foot pedal, usb b to phone cable and boss katana phone/tablet app.

The boss studios is great but using a phone vs computer is more Convenient.

Katana 50w mkll

By KB from AZ on April 8, 2024

Received my Katana a feww weeks ago and have used it well. So now I can give my two cents. This is by far the best amp for the money I've ever played. I'm not really big on the modeling programs but I'm sure if you're into the programs the are good. I'm more of playing clean and this amp is great clean. Also, the acoustic setting is realize. The Brown and more dirty settings are very good but fore me I just use my BD-2 Boss blues driver which goes fantastic with the Kanane. Nothing else. Finally the reverb at about 10 o clock and I'm in heaven. Very loud! Can't go wrong in my opinion

Boss 50 watt amp

By Bruce G from NJ on March 8, 2024 Music Background: Play bass, 6 string elec, keyboards.

Nice amp, it has some great sounds to play around with and find your settings. This amp replaced a 66 lb peavy amp, that still works great, but just got too heavy to cart around.

Enjoying Mucho

Fabulous amp

I got the MKII 100W model. Great sounds, great editing and geek-friendly interface. I'll be digging in for a long time but it's already a superb sonic journey.

Just ordered my Second Boss Katana-50 MkII!

By Timothy Barnes from Suffield, CT on February 22, 2024 Music Background: Guitarist of many years, enjoying time in a gigging band

This is an extremely versatile amplifier. I use it to gig, and I use it at home as well. The BOSS Tone Studio software enables you to get just about any sound you wish, and there are many YOUTUBE videos to inspire the numerous tones that you can dial in. Although it's a reasonable amp to carry from place to place, I actually bought two of them! My first in 2020, and my most recent in 2024. This allows me to leave one in the band practice space, and keep one at home for my own studio and travel. I've also owned 2 Fender Mustang amps, and unfortunately, both of them actually failed after using them for a time. This amp will not let you down!

Awesome!

By Kenneth Poteat from MARION, NC on February 14, 2024

Best you can get for the money and practice in my opinion. Love it and plenty of punch. Quality product for sure. Justin is a great for help and advice.
Thanks Sweetwater

Versatile Amp with good tone

By Sweetwater Customer on December 20, 2023 Music Background: 55 years experience

Thanks to Jason Filloramo I ordered this amp. I was looking at Peavey, Fender, and Marshall. This amp has so much to offer. I use it for practice and recording, but it's loud enough for small to medium venues. The built in effects are worth over $1000 dollars in stomp boxes. I bought it for my ES175, but with the Acoustic setting, it works great for my acoustic guitars as well.

Loud and crisp

Thought this amp was what I needed and it is!the thing is clear, loud and well built the controls are very nice and seem to work as they should from what I can tell.im happy with this purchase and have no complaints.

Loving it!

By Joshua Cadotte from NEGAUNEE, MI on November 30, 2023 Music Background: 3 years

First off, I want mention that I am a beginner and only play at home. I also do not have a lot of experience with amps. I wanted a modeling amp so I can play with many effects without spending a fortune on pedals. I bought the Spark 40 first and was happy with the effects, however the Bluetooth audio was horrendous and I had a lot of connectivity issues. Sweetwater was awesome to make the return super simple and I picked up the MKII. The sound quality is far superior to the Spark and there is much more control of the amp on the amp itself, rather than needing to use an app or software. Boss does have the Tone Studio software that appears pretty easy to use but I have not delved into it much yet. I've found this amp to be very user-friendly and I get awesome tones out of it. It also has an acoustic setting so it works great with my electric acoustic as well. I would definitely recommend for a hobbyist such as myself.

I'm mostly an acoustic guy. I don't really have a need for electric BUT, I was in the guitar store with my wife just lookin around and she developed a strong attachment to this particular Les Paul just out of the blue! Brought it home and she played it and played it, through our Marshall Acoustic amp. One day she looks at me and says, "I don't even know if this thing (the Guitar) is working. It just doesn't sound right." Turns out she was expecting all this crunch and wild rock noise to come out of her new toy but couldn't find it on the acoustic amp... small wonder. So we bought this Boss amp and now she thinks she is Nancy Wilson. Well, anything that keeps me in the guitar store and her good graces is a win. Feel Me?

The BOSS!!!

By wally samson sagui from Texas on August 16, 2023 Music Background: Beginner/Guitar/DJ

A little background info first. I decided to jump into the world of electric guitars, and needed a amp. Did not want something too big or expensive. Cristian and team recommended The Boss Katana. I'm new to electrics and this amp is easy to use and play with. Sounds great, and easy to adjust even for a beginner like me. Budget friendly and easy to use, this amp sounds great too.

Unbeatable

By Juan Pablo on August 8, 2023

The Katana is a great amplifier. No question about it. I suffer from Gear Acquisition Syndrome like many of us, but I have zero desire to upgrade amplifiers. The Katana sounds great, is dirt cheap, doesn't need to warm up, generates no heat, requires zero maintenance, etc. If it ever breaks, I will happily buy another one. The only thing I didn't like about the amp was its appearance, so I bought some grille cloth on eBay and switched it out. Now it looks a lot classier to me. I've added a picture.

I use it mostly for clean to lightly overdriven sounds with reverb and delay. It's super lush sounding. Just buy one and liberate yourself!

A lot of amp for a beginner!

By Eugene Shimabukuro from Mililani, Hawaii on August 1, 2023 Music Background: A retired senior, playing in my living room

July 26, 2023

Aloha Sweetwater!

I am a retired, senior who has had an interest in guitars since I was in high school during the early 70's! But there was no YouTube at the time and I got discouraged and lost interest within two years. When I retired three years ago, I found my daughter's guitar in the closet and realized that the desire to play was still in me!

I have bought most of my gear and took lessons at "Island Guitar" in Honolulu. Unfortunately, the shop struggled over the past three years and went out of business earlier this year. But, I am still meeting with my instructor every week. For the past two and a half years I have been practicing contemporary fingerpicking soloing on my Martin guitars. Most of my practice time is on my acoustic guitars but I also have a lot of interest on dialing in nice blues tones on my Fender Mexico Strat and my semi hollow Epiphone. My $ amp produced a nice clean tone but that was about it. I learned on YouTube that great tone comes from a great amplifier. I went to "Guitar Center" a few times to search for a new amp. But they just don't have enough workers and I was never able to talk to any sales person.

That's when I sent Brad Jahn an email. The next day, Damian Hyde reached out with options for an amplifier upgrade. I realize immediately that Damian had expert technical knowledge and skills to serve the best musicians. Damian knew just where I was coming from, and knew just what I was looking for. Many times, a beginner like me doesn't know what questions to ask. Damian made me feel very confident and excited to do my own online research. Prior to my shipment arriving, Damian sent me a YouTube link to get acquainted to Tone Studio. I appreciated using YouTube to help me understand, instead of sending reading material. Before contacting Sweetwater, I was considering the Fender Blues Junior, but Damian suggested that the Boss Katana is a very popular amp and would be a much better fit for me. I appreciate his guidance for the best value and versatility for me.

The Boss Katana is an affordable and exceptionally versatile amp! I placed my order during the Forth of July weekend and FedEx delivered right on time. I am dialing in the basic Gain, EQ and Effects controls in the clean and crunch amps models. I can hear the difference, the Variation button makes. I play in my living room, and everyone appreciates the .5 watt switch. 25 watt is perfect during the daytime hours. I have registered online with Roland but I have not yet logged on to Tone Studio. One feature I desire would be the "Cab Resonance" switch. I hope it is accessible in Tone Studio. Also, the large 12 inch speaker is a big plus for me!

Sweetwater emails keep me up to date with current events. But I really enjoy the instructional and gear demo videos! I will always consider Sweetwater when making purchases in the future. I will also be contacting Damian for guidance/instructions in the months to come. If anyone ever ask me about amplifiers, I will suggest, that they consider the Boss Katana and to contact Sweetwater!

Aloha!

An Excellent Value

By Mike from Pennsylvania on July 10, 2023

I bought this amp as secondary practice amp. Given the tube shortage, I didn't want to log long practice sessions on my Princeton or PRS MT15. I bought the Katana for "passable" practice tones, and it has surpassed my expectations.
First off, the amp can get a variety of usable tones right our of the box. With some know turning you can get everything from nice cleans to crunchy rhythm and searing leads. To get the most out of the amp, the Katana Tone Studio is a must. I'm pretty computer illiterate, and even I understand how this thing works. It lets you dial in an absurd range of tones from metal to ambient and even a good jazz tone.
I love the power switching and headphone out. As my practice amp, it's great that I can dial back the wattage for later night practice sessions without getting the cops called!
While I probably would not use this amp (at this time) as my first choice on a gig, I'd be happy to gig with it if I needed to. Its range of tones, Power, and portability make this a very versatile amp, and at this price it's a real value. One of the best-if not THE best- sounding amps of this kind at this price. Highly recommended.

Very Nice!

By Sweetwater Customer on June 9, 2023 Music Background: 14 years playing

I recently purchased a Jackson JS32Q from Guitar center and needed a good amp. I researched and decided to go with the Boss and I am very satisfied with it. It's easy to use and sounds fantastic. I'm used to playing on an orange amp with a les Paul guitar. Sweetwater always earns my business. I know that satisfaction is guaranteed with Sweetwater and their sales engineers really do care. I will forever only do business with Sweetwater for now on.

Excellent!

By BR Marshall from SE Ohio on May 31, 2023 Music Background: 40+ years guitaring

I've been guitaring 40+ years. I've played mostly acoustics during that time, but started on and have always had electrics. I bought the 50 Mk II in hopes of having a versatile, portable, and good sounding amp. The acoustic setting was also an important feature. I've had my Katana for a couple weeks now and am very pleased. My Taylor AE sounds very good through this amp and the ability to add effects such as reverb and delay is nice. It's much lighter than my Fishman Artist - the two would make a nice pair for small acoustic/vocal venues.

I also like the 4 electric options and they are as described. The "variation" voicings and gain knob give you near infinite tone options. I've just used it on "panel" so everything operates like a typical amp an old dog can dial in. I've played tube amps for a good while (mostly my Origin20H with pedals) and I'm very pleased it the tones and sound this amp produces. The ToneStudio maybe something I'll try at some point.

This amp has really impressed me and you get a lot for a great price. This is my new recommendation to students looking for a first amp or upgrade. I may sell a few other amps and get the 100w version so I can use my Ditto in the FX loop.

Very nice amp

By Sweetwater Customer from Texas on May 30, 2023

I really enjoy the amp I got, the sound is very crisp and loud, has good performance overall

I love this amp!

By Seth W. from IL on May 26, 2023

This is bar far the best solid state amp I own. It is a lot of fun and the tone options are endless. I have not put down my guitar since the amp arrived. I purchased another amp from Sweetwater just before this purchase... it was not a bad amp, but it was not exactly what I was looking for. After some more research I read some reviews about the Boss Katana line of amps and I thought it was more up my alley. I was specifically interested in an amp that had a power attenuator so I could get those heavy crunchy tones without making my families ears bleed So I reached out to Sweetwater and Lexie helped me out with an exchange. She has worked with me in the past and is always very helpeful. I exchanged with no issues at all and now I am enjoying this RAD amp. Thanks again to Lexie and all my friends at Sweetwater!

Wonderful amp for home

By Sean on May 24, 2023

Sometimes you have to return to something to fully appreciate it. I got out my Katana today after using my long time home amp with an 8" speaker and had such a wow moment at the first phrase I played with my strat, As an apartment dweller this amp will do nicely at television volume and it's been demonstrated to perform well with a live performance situation. Having that 12" speaker really adds something and the things I appreciate about the tonal focus of my smaller amp can be coaxed out of the Katana since I like what I call a textural sound. Nice tone and a useful collections of modeling settings. Today I feel like I've reconnected with a cherished, old friend.

Decent Combo

By Sweetwater Customer from MN on May 22, 2023

Summers in MN mean jamming on the deck, however I was tired of tearing down part of my main set up to bring upstairs/outside so landed on this amp - 1 stop shop for what i needed. Haven't even connected to the computer yet and the presets are keeping me happy since I purchased this a month ago. Way easy to use, and i love the different wattage settings, 50 has been a bit much yet, but the 5-25 are great for backyard jams or in the house without causing too many issues. The effects are sounding great, I do look fwd to tweaking them a bit, but so far it has more versatility than my Vox modeling amp, not necessarily that "boutique" sound i get from that, but this is a bit more modern sounding(which i didnt know i needed till i hooked it up) well worth it!.

I was very impressed with the sales team on picking this Boss 50 MK III. I had a text conversation with my salesman, David, over several days to get the right amp for my needs and budget. It was like talking to a friend over a beer. He was super helpful and I got the perfect amp and am really enjoying it. Thanks, John

Beginner player here. Took up guitar as therapy for neuropathy. Love the tones and flexibility of the eq and effects. Came highly recommended from my sweetwater engineer and for the money, i don't think there's a better value. Evidently it's also comfortable as my dog likes to use it as a pillow when the amp is by the couch.

Awesome

By Edward Hoffman from Charlestown, IN on April 17, 2023

This amp produces a variety of sounds. Definitely provides an avenue to search for your sound. The clean channel is my favorite so far. I'm just a beginner at guitar, this amp will allow me to grow with it and find more sounds as I progress.

The Best non tube Combo for Metal.

By Alec from California on March 13, 2023 Music Background: 15 years of trying to play guitar well.

First off, prior to purchasing this through Sweetwater, I already had some experience with it. It's the ultimate cost effective combo amp you can get. Period. The clean tones are immaculate, the multitude of effects are incredible and if I'm being honest, a bit overwhelming for my caveman plug and play chugging style. But where this amp truly excels is in the one area I need it heavy gnarly chunky metal riffs. And you don't even need to dial up much gain to get monster metal tones out of it. If you need a practice/bedroom amp to mess around with and you play heavy music, you're going to love it.

And of course, the experience purchasing through Sweetwater was as seemless as always. To say Kyle Zillioux has been an incredible pleasure to work with would be an understatement. It's the excellent communication and customer service I received through him that has made me a Sweetwater customer for life. If you're thinking about new gear, don't even hesitate to purchase through Sweetwater. And no, I wasn't paid to say that. They're legitimately the best.

In Love!

By Cymberly from Soldotna, AK on March 10, 2023 Music Background: Trumpet, guitar

This amp is everything I had hoped it would be and more!

I had watched a few video reviews before I made my final decision, and, let me tell you, half of them were pretty negative. I didn't have any hope left. Then I came across this business in the UK that made videos of their product. One of the first videos I watched was a Boss Katana demo/review, and I was sold.

I have no regrets in my choice. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY BOSS KATANA MK II 50W COMBO AMP.

Great Amp!

By Sweetwater Customer from Augusta, Ga on March 7, 2023 Music Background: I’m a long time musician, teacher and professional goof off.

I bought my son one of these months ago and I had to have one myself. I have bunches of other amps from Marshall half stacks to boutique hand wired amps. For a great all around sound, this amp is a great one to concider. If I'm playing jazz or fusion, blue grass or country, rock or speed metal, this amp has me covered. It's loud enough to use at small to medium sessions and quiet enough to use for practice without bothering other people. The sound effect are a great addition but why wouldn't they be, Boss made them. The amp is light weight and small enough that I can grab and go with ease unlike a lot of the other amps I have. This is definitely one of those amps that you're going to enjoy playing on as it makes it easier to achieve the sounds and tones you want with ease.

Better than it should be

By Sweetwater Customer from MI on March 1, 2023

All I can say is this sounds way better than a $269 amp should. in regards to the digital emulation all the modes sound very nice, but the acoustic is still a bit underwhelming but sounds betterr than 90% of similar amps for the price. This thing screams too you can take it to the full 50W and the neighborhood is gonna know, and it can take it. No cutting in or out, very little feedback distortion. You wont be dissapointed with this purchase

A no brainer

By Sweetwater Customer on February 24, 2023

For my application, this amp is a no brainer. First, the price is affordable, and it's loaded with boss effects etc. In my opinion , you can't go wrong with this guitar amp.

Great Purchase!

By Jason from Texas on February 24, 2023

I was looking for an amp to replace my 20w fender amp and decided to try the Katana due to the good reviews I read. One of the selling points for me was the ability to adjust the wattage and connect it to my laptop for basically unlimited tones.
The process of connecting the amp to my laptop was simple, and transferring tones to the amp couldn't have been easier.
The sound is also very nice. I rarely take it out of the 25w setting, as it is plenty loud when practicing by myself.
Overall, very satisfied with this amp.

Katana -50 MKll Having a lot of fun!!!

By Gills on February 20, 2023 Music Background: student

I'm trying to teach myself to play electric guitar and this amp has been the perfect match for me. I'm mainly focused on learning classic rock from the 70s and 80s. I especially enjoy trying to match the tones from my favorite guitarists and this amp is so versatile. There are so many affects to experiment with and if I can't dial in the perfect tones myself I'm connected to Boss Tone Studio where I can find some expertly crafted tones. I haven't really cranked it up yet as I practice in a small room but I plan to this summer. Maybe even take it out on my back deck and play a little AC DC and VH for the neighbors.

Excellent amp and an outstanding powered guitar cab

By Greg Witt from Dayton, O on January 24, 2023

The primary reason for buying this amp was to use it as a powered speaker for use with a Line 6 Pod Go. Before buying his amp, I was using an EHX Howitzer and routing the Pod Go through the effects loop of the Howitzer, which bypasses the tone stack and only uses the power amp, so no color from the pre-amp. I would also turn off the cab in Pod Go. While that worked pretty well, I still had to contend with the fact that I was limited to the single physical cab I use, which is a Fender 1x12 with an Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker.

The Boss Katana 50MKII changed everything - I run the Pod Go directly into the Katana Power Amp Input and I can use every cabinet and speaker combination available in the Pod Go.

The Katana sounds great, has enough power to gig in a small club or venue, and weighs less than my Blues Jr.

Plugging directly into the amp is great as well - plenty of good tone there to satisfy even the most supercilious tone aficionado.

TOO FUN!

By Eric from Frederick, MD on January 18, 2023

If you've reached my review, you've waited too long. Just get it. Better yet, get that new MKII EX or the 100 watt. They both have an effects loop. If you don't care about that and want a fun amp that has incredible sound, this is your amp.

Great product

By Justin L from Porum Oklahoma on January 13, 2023 Music Background: Total beginner

This thing sounds good. Maybe not for a beginner as I am because there is a lot of settings and way more things than I understand but if you are like me and don't like spending extra money to up grade you can buy it and learn as you go. But from what I can see and hear you can't fault the product. And the Sweetwater service 10 star Nick H. has answered every question I've had in a timely manner and believe it or not this product was delivered on Christmas Eve after ordering it just 3 or 4 days before hand. So don't be scared of the online experience with Sweeteater and if your not scared of a challenge to learn the amp sounds and looks great.

Fabulous amp

By Clay from Roanoke, VA on January 12, 2023 Music Background: 40 years of playing guitar

I have 3 other guitar amps in my inventory, which includes a Roland AC60 and a VOX VT40X. For electric guitar, some might give an edge to the VT40X amp over this Katana since my VOX has a tube for the pre-amp. But I've always found my VOX to just be confusing and not intuitive. In contrast, the Katana was easy to figure out and the software that you can download to further customize the tones is awesome too.

Love this amp!

Exceeded my expectations!

By H from Little River, SC on January 6, 2023

I have had the Katana 50 for only a couple of weeks and have not been able to use it daily, but I am completely impressed with the sound and versatility of this amp! The variations in sound, mix of built in effects, and ability to transform from a bedroom practice amp to a more than capable stage amp make this an obvious choice. I almost went with a 3 w Blackstar Fly. Choosing this instead after researching both was as smart a decision as I have ever made. The value can't be beat- and I haven't even mentioned the Boss Tone Library! You can't go wrong with this, unless you simply require more power.
Thank you, Sweetwater and my sales agent, Derek Schweizer! Best in the industry!

The BOSS!

By Sweetwater Customer on January 3, 2023

I only wish that I could give this amp a 6th star, it's that good. I love the sound and all of the features that come standard with it. The Boss tone studio software is really cool. I've only begun to scratch the surface so far, can't wait to really get to learn about it. The price was also fantastic for what you are getting. You will not go wrong with this amp.

Amazing little amp.

By Paul from Glasgow, KY on December 27, 2022 Music Background: Been playing guitar for about 20 years.

This is a great amp, with surprisingly authentic response/feel for a modeler. This amp is hyped to the moon, and while I do not agree with some statements made about it(it does not sound like a tube amp), it is insanely versatile and easy to use. It is also louder than an F18 going supersonic, if you need it to be. Great cleans, great distortion character from all the different amp models, and pretty much "only what you need" effect selection in Boss Tone Studio.
That said there are a couple things that I think need to be done, as the factory settings for the amps are quite bright and fizzy, some might even say harsh. To tame these, it's as easy as going into EQ(amp out) and setting a high cut somewhere between 6.3khz to 8khz. Some combinations of models and effects, I still like the sizzle, so I do this on a patch by patch basis. If you are a notorious hater of fizz, then you could do this in the global EQ, set, forget, and do everything from the panel fizz free.
If you are savvy you can download FxFloorBoard and gain access to some extra preamps.

Buy two and run them in stereo..

Great sound at a great price.

I teach guitar and gig with a couple of groups and this amp handles all of that and more. I get great jazz, metal, and crunchy tones in an easy to use grab n go sized package. The interface feels quality with a great analog like feel to the knobs. I'm recommending it as a practice amp for all of my students as it is a great acoustic amplifier too. 10/10

I bought this to be primarily used as an acoustic guitar amp. I wanted a little amp that makes my acoustic louder, and that had built-in effects. This amp has that, and does more. I now use this amp for my Strat and Les Paul when practicing in my apartment. It is easier to control the volume so that it doesn't disturb my neighbors, while maintaining the better than expected sound quality. I am impressed by the variety of effects in this little amp, especially the Blues Driver boost effect. I've never played that pedal before, so if that pedal sounds anything like the effect built into this amp, then I certainly need to get that pedal for my main pedal rig.

I have also used this for recording on my computer. I plugged it into my Mac via USB, and Logic Pro immediately asked if I wanted to use the Katana as the input device. I said "Yes" and then I recorded my guitar tracks with very little post processing.

I found a website that Boss/Roland has that lets people share their amp presets. I found and downloaded a preset that was supposed to make the amp sound like a Vox AC15, and when I loaded it into the amp, I was surprised to hear that it was pretty darn close to a Vox amp.

An Amp that sounds this good is a steal!

I do wish there was an easier way to adjust the effects. I'm not always near a computer, so it would be nice if there was an app that would let you adjust your effects further.

Awesome Amp for Aging Acoustic Amateur

By David A. from Brooklyn on December 19, 2022 Music Background: Amateur acoustic guitar player, new to electric guitars.

In case the title didn't make it clear, I'm am pushing 70 and have played acoustic guitars, strictly as an amateur, all my life. I wanted to explore the electric guitar world. This amp is perfect for me: the presets and the various controls make it easy for me to initially explore the fascinating range of sounds possible and the amp and accompanying app offer the possibility of years of additional experimentation and customization (very little of which is likely to happen in my case). The dynamic range is remarkable, with sound quality consistent from very low to blasting loud. No, I am not comparing this to other amps, I'm as far from being a professional as you could imagine, but if you're in my boat, I think this amp would make you as happy as it has made me.

Amazing!!!

By Sweetwater Customer on December 19, 2022

Although I'm primarily an acoustic guitar player I sometimes get gigs where an electric is required. I recently bought a PRS SE Hollowbody (astounding guitar!) and needed a small, portable amp and having previously owned a Boss Katana 100 this one looked perfect for my needs - and it is!! Fantastic sound, rich and natural (I only use a touch of reverb, no pedals), all the volume I need for small to medium sized rooms, and its light weight is appreciated! Even more amazing: you must be careful with the gain to avoid feedback, but it also sounds fine with acoustic/electric guitars, all with K&K pick-ups. The price is amazingly low for such a fine amp. This amp will be earning its keep in upcoming gigs and I have total confidence in its ability to do just about anything I need it to do. HIGHLY recommended!!

Extremely Versatile

By Jpleone from Spencer, MA on December 16, 2022 Music Background: Got a problem with it

I have had a real roller coaster ride with this amp love it one day not so much another day i was playing a strat and tele thru it and really had to mess with it to get a sound i liked even tried pedals, finally got a good heavy sound with the clean amp gain volume and eq turned up the strat was screaming but it just seemed like i couldnt bond with it and ended up getting a small tube amp which sounded great with that strat(v5 infinium)Now i have an h7 with humbuckers and that katana sounds so good with this guitar its amazing i mean scream or clean my buddy came in to see what the heck i was playing so the point is for the price of the katana mkii50 it really is a tremendous bargain worth anyone trying out it will impress you(eventualy)

Great Amp

By Thomas Tourville from Oklahoma on December 9, 2022 Music Background: Very little in playing a lot in repair guitar and amp repair.

I all ready had one and it works so good I purchased another to make a stereo system .

Bang for the buck.

By Jason from Nevada on December 7, 2022 Music Background: Just starting out & trying to get better every day.

I've only been playing guitar for a couple months so this is my first amp. I'm still exploring all of its capabilities but so far I could not be happier. I'm fortunate to have a good friend who's a very talented musician and he lets me play his guitars through it.
All the effects are precise and sound great at the 25 & 50 watt settings. The speaker drives hard and it sounds great pushing single coils and humbuckers
The ability at tweak and add to the preloaded effects with the Boss software just adds to this amps versatility and tremendous value.
Finally the build quality and attention to detail is amazing at this price point.

Boss Katana Mark ll 50

By Jerry from Florida on November 22, 2022 Music Background: Intermediate guitar player

Awesome amp. The 50 watts of power is plenty to fill any room or small event, with power to spare. Plenty of effects to experiment. Although this amp is great for electric guitars, I am impressed with the acoustic channel. Crisp and clear sounds when playing my acoustic electric. You cannot go wrong with this amp.

Really Great Amp!

By Dave on October 26, 2022 Music Background: Beginner / Definitely Amateur

Stopped in because I wanted to check out some smaller practice amps. I was looking at the Orange Crush 20 or maybe Fender Champion 20. My sales engineer recommended this amp, it was a little more expensive but does so much more. He demonstrated it in store for me and I was convinced! Got it home and tried it out and I was even more impressed. This amp does a great job from clean to crunch and has a ton of settings. It's got a good deep sound and it will definitely crank up the volume if you want it to. So glad I went in person and got this stellar suggestion, they always know more about what I want than I do and they were right as usual! So if you want a great smaller amp that sounds awesome with no pedals required this is the one.

The perfect small amp

By Samuel Moore from BEAUFORT, SC on October 19, 2022

This is an absolute machine. I can play it at 0.5 watt with perfect clarity at night and keep all the family happy, or I can blast it at 50 watts and make myself heard for a good half mile radius. It has five different amp presets that give it a huge variety of tone, so you can approximate many legendary sounds. Construction is solid, but it is not too heavy, so I can throw it in the trunk and cart it around with little headache. For the price, you can't go wrong.

This thing has it all. I mostly do home recordings and demos (you'll be surprised of the quality you can put nowa days from home studios). Anyways.. I blown away of what this little bad boy can put out. I liked it so much that I got the head and matching cabinet to jam live with my friends. The USB out is great!

Boss Katana-50 MkII

By Mike from Allen Park, MI on September 13, 2022

I am a beginner guitar player. I was using a borrowed "practice" amp from a neighbor. He suggested when I get my own amp to buy something decent that would last a long time. After reading/watching numerous reviews and consulting with my Sweetwater sales engineer I decided on the Boss Katana. It sounds a 1000% percent better than what I started with. The great sound quality makes practicing much more enjoyable. At my current skill level I don't need all the capabilities the amp has but hope to grow into them.

Really enjoying this amp

Perfect Practice Amp

By Steve P. from Phoenix AZ on August 23, 2022

I bought this as a backup amp for my Cabin. The brown tone setting out of this Katana is sweet! Plus the compression/attack is tight-better than what I get out of my 3X more expensive REVV G20. All the basic effects (reverb, delay, and modulation) are built-in so you can get by without any pedals. This amp is sooo good I bet prices will jump as people figure out how much bang for the buck you get with these lightweight beauties. I'm buying the 100w head Katana next. A BIG thank you to Matt Subers for continuing to provide excellent support and recommendations.

Excellent Amp

I got the amp this afternoon play with it for 3 hrs. The sound is just super great lots of control that you can change to shape the sound that you want, however, for someone like me who can be too lazy to twist the knob? just press channel 1 and boom you got that heavy crunch sound that is perfect. I just love it.

Amp does more than expected with some tweaking

By Sweetwater Customer on June 25, 2022

I've had this amp for a couple of years using the amp without some type of pedal is a mistake
If you can get your hands on a sans amp and plug the sans amp into the input and then plug
Your guitar into the sans amp, you will be amazed at the sound quality
I also put a sm 57 mike in front of my Samson g 800 pa the sound quality will be amazing
It does take sometime to get used to both the sans amp and your PA system
Remember this is a 50 watt solid state amp not a tube amp
I've done some gigs where I didn't even need 25 watts from the katana
Using the level and gain on the sans amp is more than you need for small gigs
I hope this review gives a different slant than some of the one and two star reviews

MY KATANA 50

By Don Martin from KY on May 25, 2022 Music Background: West Coast pro,.since l970...now retired.

So here's the scoop on my Katana...first off I've been playing for 50 years...B-3 guy but I have owned dozens of custom shop Fender and Gibson guitars and dozens of Fender/Roland amps during those 50 years..I know what good gears is jus' sayin....I just sold off my massive music gear collection and decided to keep one boutique guitar and one amp..so I bought this Katana..I know from doing my homework the only bad these amps bring with them is the fact that there are no, to my knowledge, schematics to repair them if they stop functioning..I believe this is a fact...so it arrived..plugged it in and was delighted with the effects and the sound output..I sold all my pedal boards with a multitude of effects collected over the years so my purchase of one of these amps was based on the effects offered as well. NOW TO THE GOOD: If you have any doubts that these amps at that price point aren't the best thing since white bread then you don't know jack! This amp is Sterling....little amp kicks major butt..clean...dirty..whatever I was just blown away with the tone etc...so, to me this is a great amp..yeah, if it stops working in two year warranty period from Sweetwater I'm good..Sweetwater will take care of it...if it stops working after that I'm like MEH! I'll buy another one..it's a great little amp..GET ONE!

I bought this amp two years ago from Luke at Sweetwater. I've got to say, two years in with daily usage for hours, this amp is great! It sounds and performs just as good today as it did when I unboxed it two years ago. I'm extremely happy with this amp. You cant go wrong with it.

Great tone!

By Bmicmcd from MA on May 24, 2022

This Boss Katana 50 sounds great! I don't perform outside my home so I don't need a stage amp. I went through several low-budget amps from a major guitar brand and they just did not sound good. Ah, but this Katana sounds super at low volume and high. Very satisfied.

So loud!!!

By Shawn Babel from Steubenville, OH on March 26, 2022

Perfect for acoustic-electric

By BNolin from Pittsburgh Pa on March 25, 2022 Music Background: play every day

I bought this amp a few years ago for my Strat, not really planning on using it for my acoustic Takamine. I was amazed how good the Tak sounded after adjusting the equalizer using the software. I can't play the Tak anymore unless it's plugged in. Did not see that coming.

And of course it's a great amp for the Strat... : )

Sick!!!

By Anthony from Georgia on March 23, 2022 Music Background: Metal/Hardcore

I'm sorry for the guys that gave this amp a bad review. I have been playing professional (signed on Epic Records) now for about 10 years and I was able to dial in the sickest metal tone (similar to Thy Art Is Murder) in about 3 minutes. For those who claim it sounds thin, turn up the bass and adjust your mids and highs accordingly, it's not that hard. Try adjusting them in positions you probably aren't use too. I had to run the bass almost all the way up, the highs almost completely off and the mids just over a quarter. FYI if your guitar is a load of crap, that's on you, nothing will sound good, (the same goes for cheap cables and pedals)...

If you can't get a sick metal sound out of this amp or any great sound for that matter, stop playing guitar...

Nothing comes close

By Sweetwater Customer on March 10, 2022

To start I appreciate that the customer service was there ever step of the way while this was being delivered. Now to the amp. I really appreciate the diverse sound effects you get from this amp. It's got controls which, after reading the owner's manual and some trial and error, make it easy to mimic the guitar sounds from your favorite songs. I've also enjoyed the feature which enables you to store those sounds which you make and then revisit them later. It's also good at keeping the usual buzz down when you turn to heavier metal. Be careful with the master volume. A "little" tweak goes a long way. To wrap up even if you've got a cheap or expensive guitar, this amp magnifies whatever you have. That's why I give it five stars.

By Serg A Mesa from FL on February 25, 2022 Music Background: Self Taught Guitarist

Im a beginning guitarist, started my self teaching with a Fender Squire and a small crate amp. I purchased my newest guitar Fender American Strat, from sweetwater and quickly realized the new guitar needed to be showcased thru a better amp. Ryan Haines @SW mentioned the different benefits of this amp among other amp. I am extremely pleased at how well the amp is constructed, the myriad of sound options and settings, not the least of which, how it does justice to the lows-highs-mids of my new guitar. Thanx Ryan & SW for the advice.

This amp. truly lives up to its expectations. setting up the amp was easy, the challenge for me was to figure out the different options available to fit my style and kick it up a notch or too.
The more time I spent learning the settings the easier it became. I was amazed at the power and performance level as I took it out to play on a road trip.
Not a professional musician, but enjoy playing with friends and this fits the bill.
the service I received from Sweetwater and its sales rep. was top notch.

I wanted to have a reliable and also tubeless amp as backup to the Hot Rod deluxe, just in case…of the unexpected. I Checked it out on YouTube, my ears told me yes but my brain thought impossible. I called Logan at Sweetwater and ordered it… and it's as loud and clean and dirty… and also lightweight. Will experiment with it chained via 'Y' jack with the deluxe. Happy with this little guy.

Overrated??

By Sweetwater Customer from NY on January 21, 2022

Nope. Under. If you have the patience this amp can do da*n near anything. You want a shortcut to cool sounds and tones? Get online and make the amp sound however you'd like with a vast array of preset sound options. Or ignore them. It sounds great on the clean setting with your pedals too. One of the least expensive amps has the best sound and the most options? I didn't believe it either.

Great Practice Amp

By MrTone from Charlotte, North Carolina on January 17, 2022 Music Background: Retired Guitar Tech

I bought this amp mainly for low volume practice. The amp has usable tone and volume that is loud enough to work for live use or practice. One of the best values out there.

Great practice amp

By Sweetwater Customer from Maryland on January 15, 2022

I bought this to have a secondary practice amp in my office. Considering I have a Victory tube half stack in the basement that cost 10x as much, I kinda hate how much I like playing through the Katana :).

It is the perfect practice amp though. I was quickly able to dial in and store jazz clean, bluesy twangy crunch and high gain lead tones that sound good and feel responsive to my playing. The clean tone is particularly impressive; it has plenty of bass and with a little reverb and delay it provides a nice full sound, especially on a neck pickup.

I did have to boost the bass (3 o'clock) and really cut the treble (9 o'clock) when dialing in my tone on all of the amp types (I usually have EQ pretty neutral) but after making those tweaks I think it sounds pretty good.

It is plenty loud for a practice amp, I don't think it would cut it playing with a full band or anything but if you just need something for a bedroom / apartment, etc. I don't think you will be disappointed with this amp.

USB connection is great for recording and syncing to the software (watch YouTube videos for help installing that). It's like having a host of Boss pedals and several amp models at your disposal. There's really nothing not to like, and the Mrs. is back to playing the guitar every day, which is great to see. Sweetwater's credit terms are unbeatable, too.

Boss Katana 50 MKll

Very impressed with the quality build, looks and multiple tones that can be obtained from this amp. Very easy to dial in clean, mild and heavy tones and the effects add a nice amount of additional ambiance to make any tone you are looking for. Have not tried the apps yet as there are hundreds of combinations you can use to find your tone with existing tone stacks. Maybe later. I have been playing many years and was looking for a smaller amp that had easy options and one could get straight ahead tones at good volumes. This is a top shelf amp and more so it has a good brand name -- Boss that make great sounding products.

By Michael Thompson from Omaha, NE on September 23, 2021 Music Background: 45yrs playing with occasional performig

I'm pretty much a tube amp guy,I can't work anymore and play a lot in a day,I need to get my amps serviced and can't afford to do it all the time so asked my rep Kevin Spunde about a couple solid state amps for practicing on and he said to go with the Katana. I am more than pleased with this amp, I got the 50 mkii because of price,if you can get the 100 or the head go for it. This is a fairly simple amp and out of box I can get about any sound I need and would be comfortable performing with it. I haven't used the tone app yet but will be even more pleased when I can fine tune it, but it's capable with factory settings for me, I would suggest the F6 footswitch, once you have things dialed in you have 4 channels set up to switch to playing on a footswitch. I am very happy with this amp and all the decent sounding tones I can achieve. Once it's set up to personal preference I'm able to use it like my tube amps, just play. Some pedal options are not for me but it has enough to choose from. For it's price it's a very decent amp in my opinion.

Great practice amp with lots of flexibility. Love the ability to combine effects. The Boss Katana-50 MkII is also plenty loud for small gigs.

I also started using the Boss Tone Studio on my Mac. However, you need to purchase a USB Type B cable because one isn't provided. But once you get connected, the software is very intuitive and you can easily save sounds.

For my needs, the Boss Katana-50 MkII is ideal.

I am so impressed with the boss Katana-50 MkII 1x12, It has limitless possibilities with all of the amp models w/variation button to give you 10 amp models... Then amazing effects available.. Then you have 4 presets a/b and Panel.. then you have the Tone Studio with live sets you can instantly change a preset to perfect combos of all effects.. Picked only by your imagination... You can also design your own personal Preset with even more effects than are available on the amp. You can record directly to a studio and will interface with a DAW... I own the Katana 50w 1x12 and the 100w 2x12 "IF" ever crank it all the way up you might not better have a pace maker...lol Note: the footswitch on the 50 could be better but the one for the 100 is awesome... I did alot of research when buying these amps.. I watched and listened to side by side demonstrations against every top amp out the Marshal, Fender, EVH etc... NOT ONE OF THEM SOUNDED BETTER!!

This Amp is an amazing value

By Rudy from Virginia on July 26, 2021

I have been unhappy with small at home practice amps, so I bought the Boss Katana MKII for home use, because it operates at 50 watts, 25 Watts and 0.5 watts. Also because it has the built-in effects. The price for this amp is excellent and it can be an amazing amp if you take the time to download the Tone Studio App and work with the configurations.

My first couple of times I played through it it was OK. The panel knobs and buttons has lots of choices, but I had to work hard to dial in the tones I wanted and the effects were merely OK.

I went online and downloaded the boss Tone Studio App to my MAC. WOW what a difference. The App gives you much more choices in tone and configuration choices in EQ as well as more effects and the detailed configuration of each effect. The effects are much better if you tweak them through Tone Studio.
There are 5 memory banks for saved configs that you can operate through the front panel and o/or the Tone Studio App.
There is bit of a learning curve to figure this out, but google search is your friend and between the manual and youtube videos, I was able to upgrade the Katana Software, download Tone Studio APP and dial in two really good memory banks with tones that you can take to a gig.
I am still working on others and I just purchased the foot switch to easy access all of the memory banks. Once you save the sounds you like for each bank, you don't have to use the App. You can use the front panel and foot switch to access those saved sounds.
Bottom line a 50 watt gig amp that super light in weight with 5 switchable channels with effects, not to mention home use as a practice amp.
This amp is bargain if you take the time work with it and get past the learning curve.

Lots of fun in a compact package

By Lee M. from South Bend, IN on June 23, 2021 Music Background: playing guitar since the Beatles arrived on the scene

I'm mostly a basement player and decided to sell my homebuilt tube amp for something smaller, lighter and more versatile. The Katana 50 fits the bill. Lots of sounds at your fingertips. I'm no more than a mediocre player so I can't make it sound as good as the Youtube videos but I can get some pretty cool sounds that make even my amateur playing sound decent. Looking forward to trying the Boss Tone Studio and downloading some patches for more exciting sounds.

So much boss

By David from SC on June 16, 2021 Music Background: Use to play in bands years ago just play around now

Still playing with it the sounds are very good. I like the clean setting with my strat in the 4 and 5 position. I like the crunch setting with my ESP. I definitely give it 5 stars.

Great amp for the money!

By Scott Stevens from San Diego area on June 6, 2021 Music Background: Former Bar Band guitarist, now retired, got my first Tele in 1965

It takes some effort to get Tone Studio up and running(Sweetwater's tutorial is a big help), but it's worth it. I find the "power amp in" works great. Lot's of online gurus will tell you the Katana's speaker is neither full range nor flat response, but in most cases it works fine with speaker sims, (which on most modelers you can turn off) at least the ones in my Boss GT1. Don't judge if you havent tried it yourself. AS others have pointed out, it also works well with pedals. I've used it with good results with a compressor and several overdrives. I've also had great results from the on-board overdrives. A Katana 50/GT-1 combination is not super expensive and hit way above its weight, along with giving you tremendous flexibility.

Unbelievable amp for the price. OMG, cannot believe what this amp can do for what it costs.

By Jeff Greenwell from EAGLEVILLE, TN on June 1, 2021 Music Background: you don't want to hear it

This amp sounds fantastic! .. and the controls and effects are mind blowing. The fact that you can control tone settings and apply tone patches with your computer or even at tablet, is just outstanding! .. You absolutely cannot go wrong with this amplifier. Amazing little piece of equipment for a fantastic price. I will likely buy it's big brother next. Great stuff!

Love this versatile and nice sounding Amp!

By Tim B from Suffield, CT on May 27, 2021 Music Background: Passionate Guitarist with Good Skills over Time

I bought this for my home studio, and enjoy using it to learn new songs and play along with tracks. It's a high-quality build and superior to my Fender amp which was relatively the same cost. The sounds are basic, but you can get what you need. Plenty of power at 50 watts.

Unbeatable for the money

By Sweetwater Customer on May 7, 2021 Music Background: Home player

This amp is perfect for those of us that play at home at moderate levels. I think it sounds great, and not just for the price. Honestly, it really makes me question whether the average player would ever need anything more than this. It's a legitimate bargain.

Katana 50 mkii

By Dustin Richards from San Diego on May 6, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist

I am so pleased with this amp. I'm not much of a computer guy so I'm not tweaking things too much with the tone studio. I mostly use the clean channel.... gain at 75%.... volume cranked .... a little boost ..... a little delay .... a little reverb. I still love my little fender super champ but this katana covers any base. I only wish I had got the 100 for the effects loop. Throw a looper in there. Super happy. Would highly recommend

Amazing Inexpensive amp!

By Mario Hernandez on April 21, 2021 Music Background: Intermediate guitarist

I'm an intermediate guitarist and want to replace my garbage generic amp, I got this amp due to the Hype on the internet and the hype was real, As soon I turned on the Brown channel, it was so much better than my distortion channel on my old amplifier, The clean channel is amazing! When I put the clean channel with reverb, delay, and chorus. The heavens open up. Really amazing amplifier for the price! This is honestly one of the best solid-state amps you can buy today.

The Swiss Army Knife of Amps

By Ted Tacconelli on April 17, 2021 Music Background: I'm a professional intermediate guitar player

This amp is magic in a box. You got 5 amp settings which include acoustic, clean, crunch, lead and brown. So it will appease any style you play or want to play. It can go from crystal clear cleans to searing over the top metal.
You can play the amp at 5 watts 25 watts or the total 50. 5 watts works perfect in my apartment complex. If I go to jam with my friends 25 watts works fine. I think 50 is overkill but it's there if I need it. Overall this amp will get the job done whatever you need it to do. I ordered this amp on Sunday April 11th and it arrived on Wednesday April 14th. Thank you Sweetwater and thank you Mike Conyers.

I probably will never outgrow this amp

By Keith Y from Washington on April 8, 2021 Music Background: Advanced Beginner / Intermediate

I really like this amp, it has so many options. It will take me some time to work through everything on this and for a newer less experienced player like myself, this is great! I can get tones I would never be able to without this. Open many styles of music (and playing) and new avenues of learning! I will probably never outgrow this amp. 50w is more than enough juice for me!

This amp is amazing has fx built in and you can change from 50w to 25w to .5w so you can be loud, medium, or quiet for any practice you desire and this amp cranks up when you want it to I've played nirvana to tool on this bad boy I love it and am happy with my purchase the reviews I've read are right I enjoy this amp more than my fender frontman I had and for the price you get more than you'd get with an mg marshall or an orange amp.

Beautiful Tone

By Dan P. from Central Ohio on March 29, 2021 Music Background: Intermediate, getting better every day

Since I'm not a gigging musician, just a retired guy who took up guitars again a few years ago, I don't need a Marshall stack or 1,000 watts in a 10 X 12 cabinet or something.
But I do appreciate good tone. And, increasingly, simplicity. I've owned a couple of digital amps, a Fender Champion 20 (terrific!) and a Marshall Code 25 (really good). I want something that can deliver a nice clean tone but also a slightly dirty one, just on the edge of breakup. The initial advantage of the Marshall was Bluetooth connectivity and almost limitless adjustability to shape the sound. But while I'm reasonably tech-savvy, I found I didn't really take advantage of it because it was too time consuming and that I essentially used only two or three settings out of 100 presents.
I wanted something that could deliver dynamic clean and dirty tones but not require an enormous amount of fiddling to get a sound I like. After reading dozens and dozens of reviews on the Boss Katana Mk II, I ordered it.
Of course, Sweetwater's legendary turnaround time had it at my door in a couple of days. I unpacked it, gave the manual a quick glance, plugged in my Strat and heard exactly what I wanted on the Clean setting. Clicking it over to the Crunch setting elicited some big smiles from me. It sounded glorious.
So I can see why the Katana gets such rave reviews. There are a ton of settings available if you hook it up to a computer and access the Boss Tone Studio. I haven't attempted it yet nor have I felt a need to. With the stock settings it's doing everything I wanted it to. And I love the ability to attenuate the power setting to .5 watts so I can play in my condo without setting off car alarms a half block away. At 50 watts, it's LOUD. But more often than not I play through headphones so as not to bother my wife or neighbors.
The Boss Katana 50 Mk II is everything everyone says it is: a relatively simple, beautifully designed amp that sounds more tube-like than most digital models. It's affordable, well built, has a ton of features if you delve deep into it, but you don't have to to achieve some great tones.
HIGHLY recommended!

Believe the Hype

By Bubba Ho Tep from Kent Ohio on March 28, 2021 Music Background: Playing, noodling and squealing for 30 years now. Semi-pro studio hack.

I've spent the past year singing the praises of the Fender Champ 50XL, and that is a good little amp, but mostly for its clean tones. Which are really great. Every time I threw a little dirt in the mix via its onboard effects, it got muddy. Sometimes you just wanna go metal, ya know?
This Katana is the perfect choice for everything from BB King to Megadeth tones, and everything in between. While the good, chimey clean tones are certainly here, the dirty tones are just KILLER. Also, none of the onboard effects sound overly "processed", and once dialed in, easy to store. The reverbs and delays are the best I've ever heard from a solid state amp, and I've been tone-chasing for 30 years. This amp really can do it all, and I haven't even tapped in to the Boss Tonelab yet.
This is really my new "desert island" amp, and WELL worth the money.

Great little amp!

Surprised by the performance of this Boss amp. Plenty of power for small rooms and outdoor dining patios. Amazingly works well on a big stage as well (used it at my church) utilizing the line out. Definitely a great buy! Thank you Sweetwater and Boss for a great product!

One of the best, for beginner or pro!

By Sweetwater Customer on March 21, 2021

Wanting a small, lightweight amp for grab and go, after reading so many positive reviews on the Katana, I decided to try the 50 watt 1x12 combo. When the amp arrived, it took only a few minutes to dial in and save four great sounding presets, without even opening the manual. The amp controls are extremely user friendly, no menus, only clearly labeled knobs to turn, and a few buttons to alter between three different sounds for each onboard effect, up to five effects simultaneously. Took the amp to band practice and it kept up with the full four piece band, replacing a Marshall 50 watt SS amp, with the Katana in the 25 watt mode, so more than enough volume to gig. Extremely pleased with this little amp, and Sweetwater as always.

Well worth the money

By Charlie Daniel from Michigan on March 17, 2021 Music Background: Drummer continuing to study guitar and music theory.

I tried to order a Marshall amp similar to the Katana but since they were out of stock for an extended period I spoke with my Sweetwater Rep and he suggested the Katana. I have to say I am seriously pleased with this amp. 50 amps is plenty of power for a small venue and at home I practice using headphones sometimes and the half watt setting without the headphones the rest of the time. This is my first personal amp. I had been using a Tom Sholz Guitar Ace & Line 6 Pocket Pod w/Audio-technica headphones; they are no match for the crispness and range of the Katana. The tone is the same with any of the three different watt settings. I use the 25 watt setting when alone at home so not to bother my wife, and it's addicting.

The response is fantastic and clean. The effects are basic but really are perfect for the majority of songs. Clean and Crunch are my favorites and mimic many professional's settings quite closely. The actual manufacturing quality put into this device is almost flawless and it seems to be heavy duty enough for much travelling.

I would definitely buy this amp again if for some reason I was disposed of it. I'm pleased that Sweetwater recommended this amp. Thanks Erik...!!!

This thing is a beast!

By Ron from Yuba City, CA on March 17, 2021

I concur with all the positive comments already given. Basically I'm an intermediate level player who likes to play rock god at home. This thing will inspire me for years to come. It has every effect I could ever want and the tones are amazing for such a compact piece of equipment. Awesome cleans up to some extreme high gain sounds. It's fun to dial in my own sounds and to explore all the free patches out there. My guitar collection includes a Fender MIM deluxe strat, Fender American deluxe tele, LTD Bill Kelliher BK-600, Gretsch G5420T hollow body and a Seagull S6 Original acoustic and they all sound great playing through it. I only wish I had bought this before all my other gear. I have a Mesa Boogie Mark V:25, lots of pedals and an Eleven Rack. I might end up selling those as I'll probably won't play them much again.

This amp sounds killer, I'm a tube amp collector but this was purchase for my 14 year old son because I was concerned with his ability to take care of a tube amp. I must say this thing sounds so good I would recommend it to anyone. The functions are amazing, especially the ability to reduce the wattage from 50 to 25 to 0.5 watts. and the onboard effects are perfect for him, he is really into EVH and he can get the sounds he wants out of this amp.

Great amp - Big versatile sound in a small package

By Frank from Lake Orion, MI on March 3, 2021 Music Background: Have taken money for performing

I was looking for a lightweight versatile practice amp I could drag around the house. This weighs in around 25lbs so it definitely qualifies. The package is compact.

I didn't expect as much as I got from this amp and it really wasn't on my radar until my Sweetwater Sales Engineer recommended it. This is where I really value the relationship between Sweetwater and its customers. I'm really glad I talked to the Sales Engineer and I'm really glad I got this amp.

The sound of this amp is amazing.

The clean channel is super-clear, but then there's a variation (just hit the "variation" button by the "Amp Type" knob) of the clean tone with a break-up that reminds me of my tube amp costing 5x this amp. The 12-inch speaker allows for a full range of sound; great lows and highs. You just won't get this kind of sound from the combos with smaller speakers in this price range, let alone this price plus $100-200. I'm really impressed with the sound of this solid state amp. It shows how far things have evolved with solid state amp tech.

The built-in Amp Types offer a wide variety of sounds. On top of that, you can run up to five of the built-in effects at any given time. The effects are basically presets by which you can dial in the effects' mix amounts for each and access variations of each preset using the buttons in the effects section of the controls. There is also a tap button for setting up delays.

If you need increased granularity beyond the presets in your effects controls, you can download Boss software and plug this amp into your computer via (unsupplied?) USB cable. This allows you to totally customize the built-in effects as if you were turning knobs on each of the 60-ish available pedals in this amp. This is definitely not why I got this amp, but I'm going to try this feature at some point. I've been able to get amazing sounds just by using the knobs on the amp itself (amp setting, gain, volume, OD, reverb, etc...), so I haven't even gone to the PC side of it yet after using it daily for weeks. Also, from what I understand, you can use the amp connected via USB to record the output of the Katana directly into your DAW. I haven't tried this yet either as it's not why I got this amp.

Independent of connecting this to your PC, you can save combined amp and effect settings to 2 banks of 2 different channels and access the four separate settings all with effects as desired via a footswitch/TRS cable (F/S doesn't have to be Boss and is sold separately) or by hand.

Additionally, and this may sound funny, but I'd like to highlight the power control switch. I keep things set at 0.5 watts for practice at home and it's still loud enough to disturb people through most of my house and allows full-on feedback at relatively lower volumes (compared to 25w or 50w). I tried it with my band at practice by which I can turn this switch to 25W or 50W with my band depending on how everyone has things set on a particular day and easily be heard in the mix.

If you're looking for a great combo amp for personal practice, band practice or small venues and don't need an effects loop, get this. If you need the effects loop, get the Katana 100w. Either way, anyone looking for a good-quality lightweight practice amp as I was would be happy with this amp.

The only amp you'll ever need.

By Dennis Woods from Riverside, CA on February 26, 2021 Music Background: Metal guitarist and vocalist

I don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said about this amp. I took a chance on this amp after I saw several well known guitarists on YouTube review this amp and sing its praises. Not only is this possibly the cheapest amp of its size, it's probably the loudest too. I heard that the 50 watts of this amp are measured in tube wattage so it's much louder than your average 50 watt solid state amp so you could easily do a small gig with this thing. It's also surprisingly lightweight and easy to carry around. I'd suggest spending an extra $... and get a dust cover to keep it clean. I'm a little sad that you can't use the Boss GA-FC foot controller with this amp, but I know the FS6 is compatible so I may eventually look into getting one so I can easily change channels. My favorite feature on the MKII are the variance settings which are basically a boosted/overdriven version of the selectable amp models. This allows me to take the "Brown" setting and boost with the variance button for an even more crushing and brutal metal tone. There's also an OD setting on the effects panel that allows you to boost your channels as well for an even deeper range of tone possibilities. If you don't want to spend a ton of money for a practice or even small gigging amp, look no further. This one has everything you need.

This has got to be one of the best performing Amps I have purchased. There is so much to this AMP that isn't even advertised. Built in Tuner. Boss Tone Studio software to create your own user tones as well as downloadable Live Set tones, AMP Tones, FX Tones all free to download. Pairs well with the Boss FS-6 foot switch and the FV-500L volume pedal. Definitely a great investment. Proof you don't have to spend a thousand dollars to achieve great tone.

Perfect for At-Home Studio Recording and Practicing

By Mark Shaw from Berlin, MD on February 16, 2021

I am blown away by the tone I can achieve with this little amp. These are NOT the Crate combo amps and metal zone distortion pedals we had as kids. This is a semi-professional little beast and I am shocked how well it sounds in my recordings. I was thinking this might be a decent practice amp at best, and I was going to roll the dice when it comes to recording. I gambled and I won big time. I use a Sennheiser E609 to drape over the Katana 50 and I am in love with the tone. The clean sounds in particular are just perfect for what I'm looking for. Just a little reverb and delay is all I need and I'm happy. The crunch channel sounds super deep and the low ends sound really good. Overall a very well balanced EQ. It does not take long to dial-in the sound you're looking for. I will definitely purchasing the optional foot pedal in the near future. If you have an at-home studio and limited on space and budget, this is a no brainer amp to purchase.

Don't listen to tech geeks who want to be self important by giving detailed "expert" reviews when they claim this is in any way inferior to a tube amp! This is 2021, this is a digital MODELING amp, this is state of the art software engineering and this is BOSS!! If you can't get great sound out of the Katana, you need to get some experience and schooling. For 50w and one 12" speaker it's loud enough to wake neighbors in my building ( not that I had lol). I'm meticulous about tone and although I will always love tube amps, the Boss Katana will do anything a tube amp will and more considering the built in Boss effects.

Excellent!!!

I have had this amp for about a week now and it has surpassed my expectations. It is plug and play ready with tons of tonal options. I haven't even tapped into the Boss Tone Studio Editor yet which I am sure will unlock many bells and whistles. It also takes pedals very well. I can run my looper pedal in front of the amp and with multiple loops, the signal is clear and not muffled. I love the headphone jack option for quiet playing. Overall, this amp is an incredible bargain.

I've had Boss Katana 50 for over a year now. It's a great home practice amp and super portable since it weights under 30 pounds.

I use it at home 1 - 2 hours everyday and for live performances. When I'm gigging I set the amp at the 25 watt setting mic it with a Sure SM57 mic.

The amp works great for acoustic and electric guitars (or piano) and it handles external effects well.

I highly recommend the Boss Katana 50 combo amp.

The Boss!

By Sweetwater Customer on January 12, 2021

I love this amp! Thank you Jimmy for making the suggestion. Not much to say here except that this product has a stellar reputation that lives up to the hype. It's incredibly flexible and it will work for beginners and advance players. The output control alone (0.5W, 25W, 50W) is worth the money if you don't want to wake up the kids (or the neighbors) late at night. I can even plug in my Gibson J-200 acoustic-electric, which was a nice surprise. You can also load tons of software, so you can enhance sounds effects, but that's for the more advance player. In short, you won't outgrow this amp anytime soon.

Awesome Amp with a Solid Build

I bought this to compliment a Mustang II that I bought some years ago. I wanted to have an amp at home, and one in a studio away from home. This one is a keeper. 50 watts is plenty of power, and the sound effects are well rounded. The build on this is very nice, and I appreciate working with Sweetwater to make this happen. Highly recommend for a home amp you can gig with!

INCREDIBLE AMP

By Simon on December 25, 2020

I absolutely love this amp. Easily the best overall amp that I've ever seen or heard. While it might not compare to the more expensive amps out there, this amp is very versatile for beginner guitarists and intermediate players. It has a host of built in sounds that every guitarist, regardless of skill level, can enjoy and vibe with. I must admire and shout out Sweetwater. They are the nicest, most helpful people I've ever met. Not only that, they were able to get my order to me much sooner than originally expected. For that, I commend them highly, and wish that more companies followed in their footsteps. Another thing, they included a little bag of candy in the box the amp came in, a "sweet touch" apparently. I just love that about them.

Let's just say without revealing too much I've got a little experience under my belt. I was 'lucky' enough to make my living playing music until I retired when karaoke took over.

Very good amp at incredibly low price

By Sweetwater Customer on December 12, 2020 Music Background: Guitarist, Piano and Cello, Audio Engineer student

I was looking for a good practice amp and one maybe for carrying to guitar lessons with. I turned it on and wasn't sure what to think.
At a low level the clean channel sounds a bit thin, but when the volume reasonably goes up its a good sound, I am very impressed about the distortion channels and as an alternative to the regular clean there is the acoustic mode which sounds fantastic even on an electric guitar. When this amp is anywhere from medium loud to loud the sound is very good, but it sounds especially much better when the effects are on. Right away before any additional setting up you have delay, octave and reverb and when combined with the regular setting they sound excellent. The distortion modes are great too when they are louder. I think this is one of the best amps you might get in this price range, for this price it is a great amp for practice and even in a jam session.

Awesome Amp

This amp sounds like it should cost way more. It has about everything you'd want, except a balanced line out. Gotta use a mic if you're using it live, but it's plenty loud. Nice tone, and very controllable. I would put. it up against amps in the $599+ area. Buy it. Solid purchase.

The reviews are true!

By Darren Willis from NC on November 7, 2020 Music Background: Amateur

If you look at online reviews of the Katana 50 watt amp you will see a lot of people really like it. I based my own decision to buy this amp on the many online reviews saying how great it is. After I've had it and played it I have to agree that this amp is really nice, so TRUST THE REVIEWS. You can achieve many different tones by adjusting the settings and the amp is extremely loud. It also has a headphone jack which is nice for practicing and not waking everyone up! The sound is also excellent through the headphones, not muddy or too bright. For more tones the Boss Katana tones app can be used.

If you are looking for an amp of this size I don't think you can buy a better one. By the way the price is terrific also!

I ordered this from Sweetwater and received it 3 days later so the shipping was fast and efficient. Couldn't be happier with my new amp.

Katana mk2 50

By Dennis from Medford Oregon on November 2, 2020 Music Background: Have played music professionally for 40 years

What a gem... sounds better than any tube amp I have bought and lighter going to blow the amp business apart for Boss no one can compete against this value. I have used it for a gig of 100 people the other day sounded clear and precise. Only thing foot switch is... and you do need it to use this baby right. And oh yes no amp cover... wish they put a reasonable package together so you could buy together.

Great amp

By Pete on October 11, 2020 Music Background: Been around

This amp is a bargain for the price great sounds so many combinations and acoustic setting too! Unless your making a living playing i can't imagine needing more i've had fender music man and marshall tube amps in the days of playing out and i'm well satisfied with this katana you can't go wrong with this one i've lost more money than that gambling

WOW

By Gage Pine from Elridge, MD on October 8, 2020 Music Background: Hobbiest 2 years of playing

This amp is fantastic. I was looking for some time for a good amp for my apartment that I can also use elsewhere. I play at .5W and its still plenty loud. I can only imagine how loud it gets on 50W! I purchased this after it was recommended by several people on a Facebook guitar group mentioned it. It sounds great on all settings, the effects are useful. I have really enjoyed it! If you are on the fence about it. Look up justinguitar's review on YouTube. He does a very in depth review and demonstrates all the sounds. It pushed me over the edge to buy it!

This is not a modeling amp people..

By Tim from Souther. INDIANA USA on September 1, 2020 Music Background: Been playing over 35 years. Lots of tube amps, etc.

These solid state amps rock. I've had the mk2 and mk2 now.
People keep saying this is a modeling amp, and it's not. It's solid state. It might use digital effects, but the gain and preamp are solid state. So it's analogue, but just not tube. It sounds 99.8% like a tube amp if you dial it in though with the fine studio and kr on the panel of the amp. The fine studio just allows more control of the effects, etc.

Best Bang for your Buck

By Jozef Frenock from Croydon, PA on August 1, 2020 Music Background: Hobbyist

This thing does everything I need it to. I mostly use this with my Mexican strat, and I use the Brown setting the most out of the other presets. The power control is so useful, especially since I play in a small room, so the .5W setting gets the most use. I haven't had the opportunity to take this thing out to jam with friends, but I already know I won't be drowned out by larger wattage amps. This amp really helped me track down my stratitis issue with my Mexican strat and I was able to adjust the pickups just right to get the best sound out of it. I'd recommend this amp to anyone who's looking for a decent travel amp, or just needs something smaller to play around with. Makes a great practice amp as well, with a VERY long lifespan.

Versatile, its reputation is deserved

By Sam on July 30, 2020 Music Background: Lifelong guitar enthusiast

I watched several YouTube amp comparisons and demos, and the Boss Katana amps are repeatedly given high praise. So I decided to buy one; I chose the Mark II because I prefer the concentric Effects knobs, and the variation button on the Amp Types to double the sound options. I would have purchased the 100W Mark II or the Artist if I didn't already own a large, high-powered Marshall Amp, where my primary pedalboard remains.

My review: Sounds great, plenty loud enough!, I am constantly finding new sounds by experimenting; easy and intuitive, portable enough to take with me on 5-day business trips that I drive to (I attach headphones in the hotel when I crank up the volume).

You will find that most YouTube videos mention but do not demonstrate the Acoustic amp type; since half my guitar collection is acoustic, I had to test it — and I wasn't disappointed. You can get some great sounds, and the other amp types are fun with an acoustic guitar too!

If you don't need portability, I do recommend one of the 100-watt Boss Katana Mk II versions; otherwise, buy the 50-watt. Unless you are playing for hundreds or more, there is plenty of sound from this fantastic amp. 5 stars!

Great Amp

Great Amp all around for apartment living. Great tones and the .5, 25, and 50 watt switching allows you to dial up or down to keep housemates or neighbors happy while maintaining sound quality

the hype is real

By Dave from Olathe, KS on July 23, 2020 Music Background: hobbyist

after watching several video reviews and reading a bunch more I decided to buy this amp. It is absolutely fantastic.
Great tones right out of the box, have yet to connect to my computer. the variable power settings and the master volume make it perfect for bedroom practices to small club performances. unbelievable value, best amp for the money hands down.
Personally I do not need an effects loop or 100watts of power, the Katana 50 mkII is all the amp I will ever need, and Sweetwater is the only place I would buy it from.

Grrag amp

By Jasmine from Alice, TX on July 19, 2020

Love this amp, theres so much you can do with it like making your own tones and putting them in the amp. It has a big sound too, it's a great practice amp aswell if that's what you're looking for. Has a channel 1, channel 2, and a bank A and B. Very good amp for the price I'd recommend it to anyone.

Abolutely Beautiful Tone

By Chet Gardiner from Honomalino, HI on July 12, 2020 Music Background: Performer (59 yrs), Recording production, engineering and session player (51 yrs) - Guitar, Bass and Vocals.

I originally ordered a Katana 100 but it was overkill - too big, too heavy and way louder than I needed. So my excellent friend at Sweetwater Billy Germano enabled me to rectify my lack of research, return it and buy the Katana 50 MkII instead.

In my short review of the Katana 100, I echoed every great review that was posted - it was all that and more. The same holds for this amplifier as well. I can detect a slight difference between the Waza speaker in the 100 vs the 12" in the 50, but the tone of the 50 is just as sweet for my purposes. Mostly recording, jamming and now that I've heard it, gigging!

I prefer clean sounds and this amp delivers. I can finally REALLY hear my SG Standard and the extra fancy efx boxes I've got - Chase Bliss Tonal Recall and Gravitas and EchoPlex delay. Although it's meant that I have to record using headphones instead of direct so I can put one of my studio mics on the amp - don't want to lose that tone.

Another very nice feature is the Boss Tone Studio. You can experiment with and tweak all of the parameters of the amp on a computer, store up to 4 patches that can be recalled using a dual footswitch and download some suggested sounds to try from Boss. I used a couple of those downloads as starting points to tweak my own. And the software is surprisingly easy to use -- excellent design and implementation.

I've owned and gigged with a '66 Fender Super, Ampeg, Mesa Boogie MkIV, Fender Blues Junior and Marshall and for the money, this amp is amazing, I've got efx pedals that cost more. I'm a very happy player.

Probably the best bang for the buck.

By Chang Hoi Koo from Cambridge, MA on July 9, 2020

At first, I thought 'Out of the box' sound was somewhat dull and disappointing, but with Tone Studio, everything changed. I was able to shape the tone to be very articulate, which is just the way I like it, and holy crap this amp is versatile. I purchased Katana Librarian app on my phone(was $8 or something) and it has all the features that tone studio offers so its good that I don't have to carry my laptop around. Volume is quite high, I can't go past 11 o'clock on my master even on 0.25w setting when I'm using it as practice in my living room(I live in an apartment). I was able to crank it up at my friend's garage and it sounded awesome and somehow felt that it was distinguishably louder than other solid-state/modeling amps I experienced with similar wattage. I frankly don't have a whole lot experience with high-end tube amplifier but I sure have owned and used plenty of budget amps, either solid-state or low-watt tube amps, over the years, and I can confidently say that this is absolutely the best sounding amp I have ever experienced within its price point.

Great Beginner Amp To Grow Into

By Brian Ulrey from Combined Locks, WI on July 1, 2020

I was looking for a solid amp that as a beginner I could use and grow into. The reviews that I had seen all pointed to this family of Boss amps. Boy were they right! This is a great amp that gives me the flexibility that I need as I grow as a player. The features that it has along with the built-in tones makes it a real fun workhorse. The ability to select three different power levels makes it a wonderful practice amp. Most of the time I must keep it quiet for the kids, but then other times you want to crank it up. The Tone studio software is OK. The only negative I would give is that the process to find other tones is a bit screwy. It takes a while to find user or social media groups that are creating and sharing them. But the upload and use of them is logical. All in all, a great amp that will be my go-to for an exceptionally long time. Highly recommend.

The Perfect Apartment Amp!

By Rob from Michigan on June 20, 2020 Music Background: Novice, at home player and songwriter.

I couldn't be happier with this amp; my apartment building is pretty packed, and the variable wattage settings just what I needs. I run .5w when practicing in the later evening, 25w when practicing during late day and early evenings, and once in awhile bust out the 50w setting when the parking lot is empty and it's the weekend!
I've not even remotely scratched the surface of the tone selections on this amp, and this is without me even accessing the software - my guitar instructor is very impressed with this amp as well, and is replacing his Orange 35 with a Katana.
You can't go wrong buying this for your gear setup - although I've not played out with this amp, I'm expecting the 50w setting would more than adequately cover a small coffeehouse or barroom.
Thanks to my Engineer, Keith Owen for being a great advisor and steering me to the right equipment for my needs!

If you're on the fence and thinking about getting a Katana, you will not regret it. This is the future of amps right here. It's got everything and more. If you want this amp fast, buy it here on Sweetwater because they ship it right out and you get it very quick!

The USB connectivity is the icing on the cake. You can update the effects inside the amp and use the katana as an interface, a plethora of effects and presets, amp sims, pedel-tones, etc.

I try to be versatile and play with every genre of music there is, but my heart is in Death Metal. This amp covers all grounds

I picked the guitar back up after a decade of not playing and decided to pick up a Strat pack to start. After 1 day I determined the amp needed an upgrade immediately. After some research I settled on this amp.... Greatest choice ever.

This thing is phenomenal. The tone is incredible, the effects are almost overbearing with what you can do and how much you have, the different wattage settings are incredible especially living in an apartment. I just can't get enough of this thing. If you need an amp beginner, intermediate, or pro I can't recommend it more.

I've been looking to downsize the rig a bit without sacrificing too much of my tone, so the reviews, recommendations and pricing of the Katana series sparked the intrigue of a skeptic. I'm still in awe about the size, versatility and overall functionality of this killer little amp!! The effects are great, but the thing that surprises me most is how much tube-like tone this thing has. Cleans can be mellow yet defined or snappy without being sharp; all the dirty stuff can be full without being muddy when you dial it in. The more I play around with it, the more I'm digging this little monster!! Great tones, great effects, great size, great value! So glad I bought this amp.

Boss Katana mkll 50 Watt Amplifier

When I first receive an amplifier, it usually takes a week at least to craft some great tones. This was my great surprise with the Boss Katana mkll. Within the first day of receiving it I was able to create some amazing sound patches. The Boss Tone Studio is the absolute key to fine tuning the tone patches! I am still very impressed with the sound along with the multitude of options! Great amp!

This amp is perfect for small spaces or live jam session. You can select how many watts you want to use. .25. .5 or the full 50. You can use your computer or phone to utilize Boss Tone Studios which gives you a ton more tones to work with. Even without BTS,the amp sounds amazing. Great price point.

Great amp

By Sweetwater Customer on April 5, 2020

This amp is great for the money that it cost. You can come up with a great sound for any guitar that you play through it. I even play my cigar box guitars through it. Also it's easy to operate and love the adjustable wattage. Oh yea the main reason I bought this amp was to play my acoustic guitar through and it sounds great.
Thanks to Chris Nunley at sweetwater for getting this to me quick.

Perfect for at home or with a band.

By Sweetwater Customer on April 4, 2020

At half a watt, this amp sounds surprisingly good, especially on the clean tones. The distortion sounds lack punch at that wattage, but adding some boost/delay/reverb to the clean channel is just marvelous. At 25 and 50 watts, I'm able to get amazing sounds from every amp variation, and the volume is more than enough to keep up with a heavy hitting drummer. Some combinations like Brown with Boost gave me a lot of feedback, but I have a cheap guitar with cheap pickups and no shielding, so take that for what you will.

I have not messed around with the software or connected it to my computer at all. It sounds excellent out of the box so I didn't bother. Having a presence knob would be nice for the 50 watt, but for the price, I couldn't say no to this budget beauty. If you feel like you really need the 100w or the 2x12, I'm sure you'll love the features, but the 50w is perfect for my needs.

The katana is versatile, easy to use, and sounds great. If you're looking for a beginner amp that will grow with you or a quality amp for live gigs, this amp will fit the bill. Highly recommended.

I was looking to buy a Peavey Invictive 120 Head and Cabinet, but decided to chill out, relax and think practical and I buy this little amp for practice, taking a chance. The 100w sounds really good. This one does too. I cranked it pretty loud and it's pretty solid. One thing I added was I split my signal and patched into the Boss and my Fender Rumble 50 Bass Amp at the same time. When I play distortion it sounds so amazing. It's like a concert with the low end from the Fender Rumble. I would highly recommend purchasing one of those as well just to add to your sound, or Boss should make an add on powered sub for this. It sounds like a real stack that you can practice with. My guitar is a Gibson Les Paul HP. The clean tones as well are good. The amp is good by itself, but not enough low end for my tastes, which I expect for the price and design. Adding the little Fender Rumble 50.. You guys don't even understand

Review

By David Wilczak from IL on February 22, 2020 Music Background: Guitarist for decades.

I just purchased a Boss Katana mk2 50 watt. I have to say something that I dislike. Reviews can have a major, major affect on sales. Even one bad review. I get discussed when I read a bad review. But it's based on either.
Not learning how to really use a product. Or because of some type of damage. Which one in every so many 1000s have. This is really life. There is no such thing as perfect. I've bought products that just weren't for me. No problem. That why we have to return things. Pretty simple. Hell! For $... I'm cool.

Continuing to be blown away

By Fred F. from Saint Louis, MO on February 8, 2020

I've had this amp for several months now. It has truly amazing sounds and can do a lot right out of the box. I'm really glad I got it from Sweetwater. Bryan Campbell quickly took care of a concern I had. I used to wonder why people sometimes thank their sales engineers by name in the reviews. Now I understand why. Bryan is part of Sweetwater's very different and better way of personally making sure things are done right.

Tons of Great Sounding Features!!

By Donny Pumphrey from Prattsville, AR on January 27, 2020

Boss has did a very good job with the Katana series. I've owned this amp for 2 months. I use this for practicing, recording, and small venue gigs. It sounds great!
As a tube amp guitarist for over 40 years, I was skeptical in purchasing this modeling amp because 15 years ago I bought a modeling amp and was not satisfied. With the Boss there is no lag, the emulated tube sounds are very accurate, and all the effects sound great (its Boss)! Another plus is the (free) easy to use Boss Studio. With Boss Studio, every single effect can be tweaked. I've very satisfied with this amp!

Unbelievable. I'm really impressed.

By Don Lessnau from Redford, MI on January 24, 2020

I must admit I didn't like it when I first played it. But I had set the volume and EQ like I was used to on my other amps. The BK doesn't work that way. Once you open up the gain and the volume, and then set the Master Volume on the low side....the tones are fantastic. Thick, warm and clean. Incredible. But you need to run the gain and volume way up and the master low. I am really glad I took a chance.

Impressive

By Ben from Montana on January 24, 2020 Music Background: Music School Dropout, 17 years guitar experience

I am a long time model amp user. I cut my teeth on the Line 6 Spider II some time back. This amp is not like the older modeling amps. It can still have that abrasive solid state distortion but you have to find it. Most of the tones are usable and pleasant right out of the gate. I would absolutely use this at a gig or a jam session. It’s perfect for late night practicing on the low watt setting. The computer program to tweak your settings is a must. Get this thing dialed in and you’ll wonder why you spent $$$ on a tube amp when this thing is almost just as good.

Amazing amp; amazing value!

By Jason Van Dyke from Minnesota on December 30, 2019 Music Background: Piano, voice, guitar

I haven't had too much time yet to play with all of the settings, but from what I've experienced so far, this amp is incredible! At a full 50 watts, I can hardly turn up the volume to 10 o'clock before it starts bothering other people in the room. More than capable for gigging a smaller venue! I'm also a huge fan of the on-board effects, and I'm glad an octave was one of the presets under FX, because I haven't ever really messed with octave even though I'd like to. My only complaint is that mine didn't come with a USB cable, so I had to order one from Amazon for $5 in order to access the other effects on Boss's Tone Studio. Not a huge problem, but it would have been nice to access everything right away! If you're thinking about getting this amp, I highly recommend it! Just make sure to also go pickup an A-to-B USB cable as well!

An Incredible Amp!

By Rob Zamites from Holt, MI on December 16, 2019 Music Background: I play a musician on TV

This is my second Boss amp (I have the Acoustic Live Singer 60w), as I needed something electric guitar specific. I took this little amp for a quick run with my '04 Fat Strat. To say I was blown away is an understatement - with the amp setting to 'Crunch', gain and volume halfway and the master at 2 o'clock, I played one single power chord.
And then the neighbors were blown away as well - the key here is that any amp can do this sort of thing, using full wattage. This little amp was set to the 0.5 watt setting.
I'm going to have to wait until midday on a weekend before I dare dime this beauty with my new Squier CV (yes, from Sweetwater as well, thanks Keith O.) and run through the 10 amp settings and 25 FX settings (you can chain 3 together!).
Do yourself a favor; if you're looking for a compact, lower wattage modeling amp, don't look further. This Katana will be all you ask for, and all you'll need.

I bought this Katana 50 MkII to replace my Vox VT40X. I had previously tried the Katana Artist and found it to be the best combo amp I've ever played through...it was just too big and heavy. With the new Mk II series all the best parts of that Artist are now available in the smaller versions of the Katana line. For me, this is the perfect amp. Small, powerful, and, best of all, totally flexible with GREAT sounding amps and effects. WELL DONE KATANA and WELL DONE SWEETWATER, for a seamless purchase and delivery experience.

I am by no means a professional guitarist, so please take that in stride; however, as a beginner I am very curious as to what this amp can do. For the price the quality and sounds are amazing. I really enjoy exploring the different tones I can get and I haven't even started programming online yet with the different effects I have available. At my skill level, this amp provides everything I need and an abundance more. Even if I was a gigging musician, I could see the Boss Katana being used at small venues.

BOSS Katana-50 MkII

By Sloppy Joe from Japan on November 3, 2019 Music Background: 45 years of playing blues and classic rock.

I was looking for an inexpensive solid-state amp I could use at home for practice with my electric guitars and for a local Hawaiian band with my acoustic-electric guitar. I poked around and found heard good things about the BOSS Katana-50 MkII with one 12-inch speaker... Lots of positive reviews and demo videos about the amp. I was intrigued by the myriad settings for the 60 programmable BOSS effects. So I bought it. I’ve played with the amp for a week now. It’s worth the money despite the steep learning curve for me. I’m just not used to playing an amp with so many settings. I’m still learning how to access all the combinations of effects, but the different amp settings makes the Katana-50 MkII a highly versatile sound machine. And it’s super quiet at rest. And I like the ability to change the power output from 50 watts to 0.5 watts. Handy for late-night practice. I can’t find anything wrong with this amp. I even connected a two-button Marshall footswitch sitting around, and it works with the amp! It’s lightweight, looks snazzy, and sounds great! A bargain... And Sweetwater once again came through with super service.

I admit it, I was a tube snob. I had heard a lot of good things about the Katana and really wasn't even looking for an amp. I had sold a few things on Reverb and had some extra money and stumbled across the MKII after it was released. Sweetwater is my favorite to order new from because of the excellent customer service, so that's who I bought it from.. This amp was really easy to dial in a great tone and the use of the Boss Tone Studio gives access to so many options. I really enjoy this amp because of the great tones and light weight. I haven't tried playing live with it yet but from other reviews I've read, it should do fine. Solid state has come a long way!

Great Amp for a Great Price

By Sweetwater Customer on March 30, 2023

It certainly measures up to all the hype I've seen on YouTube. Great tone and great effects.

Great amp! Will beat anything out there for the price!

By Dawson from Santa Cruz on January 18, 2023

The amp has a good amount of tone options. It also sounds very good for being a digital amp in this price range.
Build quality is also very good for the price. If you need a small sized practice amp for in home use without cranking massive volumes from your tube amps this is a great option.. my favorite amp will always be a jcm800 4 input 100w superlead but this works very well for me for in home use. some sounds from the amp sound kind of "thin" but thats expected from amps in this price range and you can easily mess with settings and dial it in to sound good.. its convenient having the 2 channels so you can set your favorite settings for on demand playing. These amps seem robust and reliable for the cost and you cant go wrong with it at all. not sure why people give this amp negative reviews for tone.. ( its a under 300$ amp for Christ sake. )
and i was expecting less of the amp and actually chose this over a 1200$ marshall in this same watt range and size range.. its literally just "good enough" and i dont see how you could ask anymore of it. id likely give it a 3 stars for tone but im giving it a 4 and 1/2 because this is not a "tube amp" and for the price range it sounds like a 4 1/2 stars in comparison to other amps on the market.

cant go wrong with it.

Wish I had this kind of amp when I first started playing 18 years ago.

By Pearson from South Carolina on January 12, 2023 Music Background: Recording Musician/Producer

I recently upgraded and repaired my old Epiphone Les Paul for my dad. The only amp he had at the time was my very first Fender Frontman 15G, so I got him this to have something hopefully a little better sounding to play through. Having never played anything in the Katana series, I assumed it would be better than the "beginner" amps I grew up with. I was honestly surprised with just how good this amp sounds, and I wish I had access to both the number and quality of sounds that this amp can provide when I first started playing. I was particularly pleased with the drive sounds. The different amp styles and boost combinations provide a wide range of gain from squeaky clean to almost high gain modern metal tones (not quite dirty enogh, but it gets close). You can crank the gain without that "can of bees" fizz that many associate with digital modeling combos, and the amp even reacts to picking dynamics and volume knob adjustments fairly well. The onboard effects on the amp serve as a great baseline introduction to the different types of effects out there for newer players to try out. I wish it came with a basic footswitch to toggle between dirt settings or to turn the effects on and off on the fly, but the front panel is fairly intuitive on its own. As this was a gift, I didn't get a chance to try the desktop editing software, but I would imagine this provides additional options and parameters for players looking for more customizability. Overall, a great sounding amp that both beginners and experienced players can enjoy, especially at this price point.

Great amp for practice

You can get some amazing tones with just the built-in effects, also works great with pedals.

Fantastic little amp!

By Melissa Brooks from Kennewick, WA on June 15, 2022 Music Background: Started playing a year and a half ago, mainly play death metal and related genres.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this amp! Despite it being only a 50w 1x12 this thing can not only get LOUD, but it sounds surprisingly good for being a solid state practice amp as well. And by plugging it into a computer and downloading the app for it you get a ton of extra options, digital pedals, etc to choose from.

Obviously it's no 5150 or mesa boogie, but for the price this thing rips!

Awesome amp

Great Little Amp that CAN

By Sweetwater Customer on February 18, 2022 Music Background: Semi pro guitar 50 years, semi pro engineer

This new 2nd version is a big improvement over the first version! The effects are better, the addition of the the 'variation' button is very useful. The stacked dual effects knobs and the ability to use more fx at once is a is fantastic. The 2 acoustic settings are 'good enough' for most situations. If you want more control, get an acoustic EQ (it's pretty much all in the mid-ranges anyway for acoustics IMHO) Also, the addition of the Line In to bypass the amp and only use the power section is great! No effects loop, but I don't need it personally. Powerful enough for small to medium gigs and to attenuate down for home too. For the money, you just can't beat this...hands down! A special call-out to Micheal Eads for all his great service over the years too!

So far so good with the Katana

By Sweetwater Customer on February 4, 2022 Music Background: amateur musician/bachelor's degree in music ed

This little lightweight amp packs a lot in a small package. I really like the controls and features. I bought this to replace a defective Peavey Classic 30 that has already blown two transformers in less than 5 years. A friend of mine has a Katana and speaks very highly of it. I have just received a TRS cable for my footswitch, so now I can access the channels without having to turn around and hit a button. Seems like a dedicated footswitch could be included with the amp, but the FS6 does the job. You just have to buy it separately and a TRS control cable. This is going to work great in my studio and should handle any gigs I might play. It's light and sounds great, just what I needed. If it will just be trouble free for a while, that will make it completely 5 stars.

Simply cannot be beat except in one area

By Kyle from New Jersey on November 20, 2021 Music Background: Bassist with minor guitar experience

I picked one of these up for my girlfriend as her first electric guitar amp and for all intents and in the most important areas it is perfect. All the modes sound awesome, especially the clean mode where she spends her most time. The EQ is very responsive and makes plenty of difference without being too sweeping. The adjustable power mode makes way more of a difference than I anticipated; in the 0.5 Watt mode she can play at a volume where she can hear herself through the speaker without disturbing her very noise sensitive cats. That same speaker by the way sounds awesome. On top of all that the Boss Tone Studio is very usable, albeit only with a laptop but my girlfriend and I had no trouble figuring it out, and the effects are all of the highest quality. With only a little bit of time she was able to dial in a clean and a dirty sound to fit all her playing needs; which range from like clean indy/drone style stuff all the way to say Make Yourself/Morning View era Incubus when it comes to heavier/high gain kind of stuff.

The only downside to the 50 Watt version does not accept the use of the GFC-10 footswitch that the 100 Watt versions do, meaning you can only use the FS6 footswitch with the amp. That means you can only have two channels with effects rather than five plus channels. For her that's no big deal, though for me that would make using the amp live a bit of a pain in the butt.

We have both been impressed with the Katana Mk2 50. It is bar none the best small solid state amplifier on the market and it is a must buy.

Unbelievable!

By Patrick Sneary from BANGOR, PA on November 6, 2021 Music Background: Just love to play!

Incredible amp, excellent tone! Great for practice solo, with a band or ready to gig. Needs more work to sound bad. Great variety. I shaved off half a star for 2 reasons. First, I feel if there are foot switches available, one should be included. Second, there should be an effects loop. Now I understand this is the cheaper of the line up and that this amp has its own effects. The effects are great, but maybe I want a different delay or reverb that isn't offered. Maybe I'm with a band and need to change channels from clean to dirty on the fly. I feel that these options aren't to costly to be included with the amp. You don't need the big fancy foot board. Just a channel switch. One button (as this is a 2 preset channel amp).
All I got for this amp. I say buy it if you need. Super versatile and exceptional for the price.

Great Gigging amp!

By Sweetwater Customer on October 31, 2021 Music Background: Semi pro

Bought this for practice but as I discovered this sounds so good with my pedalboard. I programmed Chanel 2 for the few high gain songs my band does. Get it and gig it, it's that good!

Good amp for the price .

By Dan on August 25, 2021 Music Background: Hobby

I bought the Boss Katina 50 MKII for playing at home. I use the 25 watt power setting and turn the volume down and it gives nice 1x12 sound without being cranked up . I mostly play the clean channel with a touch of reverb with my electric guitar.
I like the acoustic channel for my A/E guitar . Small adjustments on the tone and reverb is all that needs to be done when changing guitars . One amp for electric and acoustic electric is a good thing , and the price is easy on the wallet .

there can’t be any amp this size that could be this rad.

By rob from southern Oregon coast on June 24, 2021 Music Background: practicing musician

I love this amp . The only reason I did t get it the other her half a star is cause the amp comes with a phaser90 in two spots on bank a of fx , and another spot on bank b . same with a few other effects that are repeats. I can't get the studio to work. It because i'm not computer savvy . so though i like the presets and can tweek em a little , i'm basically not able to use much in the way of effects till i can get on the tone studio someday.

Katana

By Ryan Nicklas on June 22, 2021

Coming from my old Line 6 Spider (and then trying various free/cheap amp sims with Logic) this amp blew me away! It sounds great straight out of the box, the clean channel can get nice and sparkly, and the distorted channels are good for older and newer rock, and metal too (but if you're looking for a djent machine you should probably look elsewere).

You can really get into what this thing is capable of once you hook it up to your computer and start digging around the tone studio, but this is also where my biggest gripe comes in to play. Not all guitarists are the most tech savvy people on the planet and installing the firmware update required to use tone studio is not the most intuetive and took some time to figure out (I've linked the video I used to hopefully save you some time). But once you get it working I don't think any other amp (especally at this price) lets you dig this deep into the settings of each effect and sculpt your tone to this degree.

The 50 watt version is pleantly loud for home use and for playing smaller venues with a band (in fact I usually use it on the 25 watt setting when playing at home). It also has a headphone/record output for silent practice and a USB output for recording straight into your DAW of choice. These outputs let you use your choice of 3 cabinet impulse responses (Vintage, Modern, and Deep), I think they sound fine for practice or demos but if you have the ability to mic up the cab for recording I think it sounds significantly better (watch my video to see for yourself).

Amazing Practice Amp

By David Williamson from Sioux City, IA USA on April 17, 2021 Music Background: Retired professional musician turned very serious hobby studio musician. 35 years experience with many, many different amps.

I've had this model for a over a year now. It's berthing they said it would be. It covers every genera I play and then some with remarkable sound and feel. If you're looking for a great practice amp, and I own Positive Grids "Spark" amp too, this is the one. Only drawback is no foot controls for this 50w model effects. Channel switching only which is plenty for me. I personally use very few effects so that's not a big deal. The 100w version does have pedal board compatibility for effects for about another $100. I believe the 100w, also with variable amp wattage control, would prob turn this into full blown practice amp with a band. This little 50w could prob cut into the mix or you could mic it. Its oud and holds its tone at full volume. I'll try it in a full band setting practice and see how it does. I strongly recommend this amp for the quality and the cost.

Boss Katana 50

By Dave from PA on March 11, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist for over 30 yeras.

Took a break from playing for quite a few years. AMAZING how far modeling amps have closed the barrier to the true tube sound. The Boss Katana has that same creamy thick tone of tube amps. I know because I have owned many over the years. The 50 watt version is LOUD. Danny at Sweetwater was a HUGE help and super nice guy to deal with. The people there really care about you.

Believe the hype

By Brandon Moore from Fort Lauderdale, FL on March 10, 2021

There's a lot of hype around this amp. It lives up to it. I've been able to dial in Hendrix-like clean tones to 80s metal lead. I wish it had a presence knob, but I think this is an amp I'll be keeping for a long time. Oh, and the ability to use .05 watt is perfect for bedroom rocking.

Works great so far

By Sweetwater Customer from SF Bay Area on March 5, 2021

This is an amazingly versatile amp at a very reasonable price.

There is sooo much to tweak that I'm sure it will take some time for me to fully appreciate the depth of what you can do with it (I've only had it for a bit more than a week).

Bottom line though, it sounds great, and lets me dial in the sound to whatever I want to use for the mood of the music.

Everything You Need

By Al from CA on February 24, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist

Well, I am amazed at how great this amp is. I have not been keeping up with the musician and gig scene for more than a decade now. I wish this amp was available in the 90s and early 2000s. It has every BOSS effect you need, and then some.

Only gripe I have it is it doesn't have an effects loop but I suppose you can't have everything (unless it's the Mk2 100). But for the price, this is definitely more than worth it.

Be warned though, you may spend half of your playing time tweaking and fiddling with knobs instead of playing just to get the "perfect" tone.

Very, very good

By Sweetwater Customer from North Carolina on September 8, 2020 Music Background: Been playing a bunch of music a while

I had been playing through a Marshall code 25 and it was serviceable. My biggest issues were the clunky Bluetooth, most of the presets, and the interface on the amp itself. I had to do too much to play. Immediately after plugging in and playing on the brown and lead channels I was immediately satisfied. Ive only had it a month but I have found a use for all the channels. At first I found the clean a bit dark but decided to use it for more jazzy tones because it sounds more rounded. The wattage is perfect, I'm not playing any large venues, love the power attenuation. Effects are very good and once, I experimented and read the manual I was good. It is a great solution for me. The only thing I do not like is that I can only use either an expression pedal or the FS-6 and not both simultaneously. Shout out to Ashton Boyd, my sales rep, who is a top top representative for Sweetwater. I don't think I will trust many other people especially, with my gear needs. He never hesitates to answer my myriad of crazy questions!

It's Boss. What can you say?

By Johnny Smith from Kentucky on August 6, 2020 Music Background: Semi-Pro

This amp has exceeded my expectations on every level and I don't say that lightly. I'm a 30-year long musician and have had every amp made, so when I boast on this amp, it's the real deal. Great sound, Great features, Lightweight, and offers a simplistic easy to understand interface. This amp has the sparkling clean tones of a Fender amp and the growl of a Marshall all rolled into one. I would have given it a 5-star rating but the boss tone studio offers very few downloadable presets for the amp. That was the only lacking thing about this amplifier.

Small powerful and full of great sounds!

By Richard Henry from Atlanta on April 6, 2020 Music Background: Rock

I never leave reviews but with this boss katana mkii I made an exception, take this review with the knowledge that I only play at home so I keep the amp at a moderate volume level. I have turned it up occasionally and it can get loud for its size! I previously owned a Marshall code 50 and was never happy with the modeling sounds I was getting with it. I decided to give the the boss a try after reading the reviews and watching some video reviews online and man am I happy I did! The clean sounds are great and the brown sound is amazing, now the amp alone sounds great but if you really want to open up the potential of this amp download boss's tone studio to your computer and hook up the katana via usb to your computer and the amp turns into a monster! It's amazing the sounds with the tone studio and the katana you can get! I love shopping with Sweetwater and my guy max makes it really easy too!

Great-sounding combo amp

By Sweetwater Customer on March 13, 2020

This is a great-sounding, versatile little combo amp. And it's LOUD! For live use, you'll probably want a foot switch.

I took 1/2 star off because dialing in and accessing the many many Boss effects is not nearly as easy as stomping a foot pedal.

Dope

By Owen from Minnesota on February 29, 2020

Good sounding amp with lots of features and solid onboard effects. Takes pedals surprisingly well. Biggest complaint is that the Tone Studio software can be kind of clunky and hard to work with, but despite that it's still very powerful and allows you to really dial in every little detail of your tone. I would recommend buying a footswitch to make the most use out of it, especially if you plan to use it live.

The Versatile Katana 50

By Sweetwater Customer on December 29, 2019

This is just an incredible little amp. For years I’ve been a one-trick guitarist so to speak, with my Marshall plexi’s playing in a Chicago tribute band for the last 20 plus years. Where it was a simple guitar, cord, and cranked amp setup. So, I’m very used to that vintage tube tone, texture, and feel. My recent project, which I’m fortunate to be a part of, requires some more tones and effects than my current setup can provide, at a reasonable volume! So I researched and found this amp, the Katana 50. I was impressed with the tones and effects it was capable of producing, in one small, compact package. I’ve read reviews that folks think the amp sounds thin and tinny, well...at first I would agree, to a certain extent. But, once you connect the amp to the Boss Tone Studio and dial back the presence, model the cab to Vintage then dial in your tone from there....it gets pretty close to a tube amp sound and feel for a solid state amp!
In Boss Tone Studio you can create Livesets, which assigns your channels different tones and effects for different songs, etc. Then you use your foot switch to change between those channels. This, I found is helpful since the Katana 50 doesn’t have the footswitch capabilities that the Katana 100 has.
Last, the power scaling. I really like that you can adjust the wattage of the amp for any situation. The amp can get LOUD, but it can also be tamed. Love it, great all-around amp! Thank you MT!

Great versatile amp, huge bang for your buck

By Jamie on December 4, 2019

I have had this amp for almost two months, and I love it.
There is a lot going on with this amp, and for all that it does, they make a lot of it pretty simple and straightforward.
There is a slight initial learning curve with getting the firmware updated and making sure you have the drivers on your computer, if you are going to use it that way.
Some people don't, and can get everything they need from it out of the box. I want to be able to tweak everything. Boss provides all of the files and instructions you need to get started on their website, you just need to take your time and read carefully.

I am confused by some comments about it being limited out of the box - without hooking it up to a computer you have three types of boost, three types of modulation, three types of "effects", three types of delay, and three types of reverb, plus 5 amp 'types' each with two versions, and gain control - all of which can be dialed to the desired level, and all of which are pretty good quality, and you can save up to four preset sounds directly on the amp without using a computer.

Once you connect it to a computer, and to the Boss Tone Studio software, you have access to all the individual controls for each of those and the other (more than 60 total) effects options.
You also get access to a global EQ setting, noise suppression, presence, and cab style, as well as the ability to download and import presets.

Between the 10 amp styles (5 styles plus 'variation' mode of each), and the 60+ effects built into the amp, I can't imagine much you can't do with it. Pair with an expression pedal and an A/B foot switch and you're good to go. I do wish the 50 watt was compatible with the GA-FC foot switch which gives a lot more control without having to touch the amp, but I'll make do without it.

Is it as good as a $2,000 tube amp and $1,200 worth of pedals? Of course not.
But it's better than anything I've encountered in its price and range and well above in a lot of cases.

Definitely Meets Expectations

By Jason from Norwich, NY on November 25, 2019 Music Background: I play in a 5-piece band nearly everyweek.

I'm absolutely enjoying how versatile this amp is. I got it as a practice amp for my home, but it is LOUD. I almost never turn it off the .5 watt mode. Setting it 25 watts will make it easily heard upstairs. I own a Zoom G3Xn multi-effects pedal, but I wanted an amp that I could simply plug into, twist a few knobs, and dial in the tone I was hearing in my head. Boss delivered that. I was a little surprised that there wasn't more low end, but it will sit nicely in a mix with a full band because of that. Overall, really pleased with this purchase.

Best Combo Amp For The Money. Seriously.

By Texasaurus Records on October 20, 2019 Music Background: Playing live since 1981

I kind of moved backwards with a Katana combo, even though I upgraded to the newer Mk II version. I use a Katana head with various cabinets, from a Celestion loaded single 10" to Celestion loaded stereo 4x10", plus everything in-between. I demo'd the Katana combos, wasn't satisfied with the I/O options compared to the head, so I went with the head. This was when the Katana series first arrived, and that amp has endured 100's of gigs, 100's of studio hours.
Back to combo amps-I never found the I/O I wanted PLUS the superb tube mojo in a combo amp-we have just went with Fender and Marshall combos instead, although we added a Blackstar recently. Occasion arose, and I needed a decent combo amp for some road gigs and didn't want to cart a real tube amp and was looking around. A sales tech mentioned the Katana MK II. I was like... I already been there, didn't have desired overall I/O options, didn't want a 12" speaker, etc ad nauseum. He said...Just try it, you don't need all that I/O on these gigs. Pointed to a Strat and a Les Paul, I chose the Strat, so I could show that tech how the 12" messed up a good chimey, yet squanky, Strat 2 and 4 position vibe, and it would never work for this n that, etc. Well, egg on my face, ha ha to me, cuz that amp blew me away by just nailing an SRV/Texas Blues, dialed up in a heartbeat. Plus, everything else I could imagine. So, I gave the Les Paul a run at it, full tilt hard n heavy. Wow- Double amazing, this ain't no kiddie amp- but that is hard to reconcile with the reality of the performance vs price-point. They are GIVING these away, as far as I am concerned. Perfect choice for those gigs, it payed for itself via no tube replacement bill totalling $100's. It probably deserves a full 5 Star rating but I am stubbornly stuck on the limited I/O. Deal of the Century, I cannot imagine anyone paying more for less. I WILL say the Blackstar Silverline Series is a similar option, tube voicing/performance-wise, but that series cost more. Beginner or Pro, nuthin' beats a Katana 50 combo.

If you need a amplifier that you can turn on and turn off at whim this is a great amp get a little bit of Reverb play it at a loudness that sounds good which is whether it's at the 50 the 25 or the 0.5 they all work great are they things that I would change oh absolutely but if you're looking for an inexpensive amp maybe your first one maybe one that you want just to be able to have that turn off and turn off when you need to go it is solid state you can do that tubes you can't do that I run all to Vamps and you got to warm them up for a minimum of a half hour and after a show you have to let him rest for about an hour so if you're practicing every day and you need something that has a good sound and allow you to enjoy your practice this is the amp yes I did try some other amps before this one they didn't hold

Nice sounding solid state amplifier and its very light in weight

By william phillips from PITTSFIELD, MA on March 1, 2023

I use this amp for practice in our bass players basement. Its a smaller room so a large amplifier isn't required. I like the ability to switch from one tone to the next with realative ease. Great reverb, very good slap back echo and bass, treble and mid knobs that actually are well balanced when you need just a little more bass or treble you turn one of the equalizer knobs and you get just the bass, treble or mid you want. I like the ability to change the wattage output from 1 to 10 to 20 to 50 depending on what you are playing. Very good amp

Great Amp besides missing a couple of features

By Sweetwater Customer on April 5, 2022 Music Background: 25 year gigging guitarist

The amp is the best representation of my tube amps in this digital world. It is inexpensive and with the tube scare, I chose as a practice and gig backup. The only reason 4 stars selected is because of the lack of an effects loop and limited foot pedal capability.

Light weight, plenty of effects and I love the .5 watt setting when practicing at home

By William from Pittsfield MA on February 17, 2022 Music Background: 30+ years

I have only owned this for 2-3 weeks and I am still tyring to find more "sounds" that I would use live. I have 2 settings right now that I like and can use in a live situation.
The pros - Light weight, plenty of effects, still finding different sounds, love the .5 watt setting, other two settings 25W and 50W areloud enough to use live at small venues.
The cons - Thin sounding on the upper frets, especially on the B and E strings (clean sound-maybe I will find the right settings to fix this but haven't found it yet). Having to hook it up to your computer to "dial in different tones - yes, I'm old fashioned and like to turn the knobs to tweek my sound. Yes, I have listened to the you tube posts and the best ones are the ones in someones music studio. One or two others who "found" a great sound for their style of music. I play in a group where we play Classic Rock, Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Country, Country Rock, Country Swing and some Disco and I need an amp that will "work" with all these genre's. I have a gig this weekend and I bought an AB-Y pedal and will see how this works out. Maybe it will open up a new avenue with this dyed in the wool tube amp dude.

I love this amp because it offers so much in different types of distortion and effects. One of the reasons I bought this is because I can switch between 3 different watt settings. The 50 watt selection is extremely powerful and this little amp can be heard well above drums, bass guitar, and vocals. There is also a 0.5 watt selection which is great for playing in the bedroom. And it only weights 25 pounds so it's easy to move around. If you want everything in one package, then buy this amp! It cost far less than it should and it's an incredible deal! I love this amp and it's become my new favorite. I also use it sometimes as a preamp for my Marshall cabinet.

However, there is a negative side for me, and apparently many other guitar players who have purchased this amp. It's the downloading of the BOSS Tone Control software that allows you to download up to 60 additional affects from BOSS. The problem is with downloading the software, and not with the software itself (which is amazing). You have to go to the BOSS website for the download and there are directions on how to do it. But according to the directions on the website, if you download the software incorrectly you can possibly destroy your amp!! Not in the sense that it will blow up, but the software inside your amp may become damaged and your amp becomes a large doorstop. Thank goodness for Youtube! There are a number of videos there to explain how to do the download properly.

My only other complaint, but it doesn't affect my ratting of this amp, has to do with FedEx. Sweetwater shipped my amp on Sept 3. On Sept 9 my tracking showed that my amp arrived in Phoenix, which is where I live. FedEx sent me a message stating that they were delaying the delivery of my amp for 5 additional days to Sept. 14 with no explanation why!! I called FedEx and no one could tell me why my delivery was being delayed 5 additional days. So FedEx really failed on this delivery.

So Many Options

By Dan from Rockford, IL on July 16, 2021

This is my first amp, and it goes with my first electric. The number of options on this thing are a bit overwhelming, and it's going to take me a bit to really start to dig in and get the most out of it.

But I'm happy. This thing sounds great, and the number of effects that can be had on here are huge. I don't know what I'm doing yet, but once I get up to speed, I'm confident I'll be able to do whatever I dream up with it.

Great amp at a great price

By Elman Authement from Thibodaux, La. on April 12, 2021

Perfect amp for practice at home but loud enough for a small venue. I'm a big fan of Boss products and Tone Studio so having Tone Studio on the amp and an online community to share presets with is nice. I was mainly interested in the 'power amp in' jack behind the amp so that I could bypass the Katana's onboard effects and plug in my Boss Gt-100 or Boss GT-1 multi-effects pedals, allowing me to set tones on my pedals without the built in preamp settings affecting my tones. This is a great feature. Now if you're wanting to plug in a separate pedal into the effects chain, you'll want the Katana 100. Also the 100 has the capability to connect the GA-FC footswitch. This is the only reason I give the Katana 50 4 stars. The footswitch to works with the Katana Mkii 50 only allows for 4 presets. So if you're going to be gigging with this amp, you'll probably want the 100 watt or other Katana amps available. But if you're mainly using it for home practice and get togethers with friends, this will work great. I might add there is an app for Android users called the Katana Librarian that allows you to save a bunch of presets, and with the touch of preset file, it sends it to your amp. You do have to hardwire it from the amp to your phone or tablet though. But this app allows me to have tons of presets without having to use Tone Studio on my computer.

Great Amp w/ tons of extras

By Kirk from Chicago on March 6, 2021

This amp is great. Tons of features. I would highly recommend this. Living in an apartment setting I do have to say this amp is LOUD! Even on the lower wattage options. I crank it up when I hear the neighbors leave. I do use headphones AKG 270 studio sound great with it.
My only complaint is the Boss Tone Studio which increases the amps functions greatly are not compatible with an IPAD. I did find a non - Boss sanctioned android app the works pretty good with my phone. I guess I'll have to invest in a windows laptop to get the full value of the amp.

Better then I was thinking

By Jesus Estrada on January 24, 2021

Really don't have a complaint about the amp knobs work well sounds good packaging was great only thing that I didn't like was I was under the assumption that you would be able to use the Boss tone software with your Android device. And I got some barcode to scan but it don't work tried three different apps.

I love my deluxe rev & marshall 40 watt tube combo amp,But they're HEAVY!I can set up in no time at all,no boxes or peds, just amp cord & guitar.Great for small gigs, open Mike night,in&out stuff..... That's what I'm thinking. But I just got it so I'm sure there's much more to find.

Lived up to the hype

By Sweetwater Customer on December 12, 2020

I already have two tube amps that sound great but are too heavy to lug around. So o was looking for a light portable amp with decent sound. After reading a bunch of reviews, I tried the Boss Kitana at my local guitar store. It sounded better than I expected so I bought one... I've had it for a week now and while my tube amps are slightly better, the sound is really good for the price. It takes a little bit of tweaking to get the sound your looking for. Overall when you include the amps model settings and the effects this is a really great amp. If you are a new player looking for an amp you really can't go wrong with this one.

Solid for Solid State

By James from Minnesota on September 17, 2020 Music Background: Formerly a gigging musician but now play at home dad.

I bought this amp but returned it. That said, I think it's a great value for the money as the effects, cabinet and speaker all sound great, but I just didn't like the sound of the gain on this solid state amp. I've been playing tube amps only for 10+ years and I thought that solid state tone could sound closer to tube tone. I guess I got used to the smooth frequencies that apparently only tubes can provide. Again, for the money, I think this amp is great! It's perfect for those that are starting out and want to experiment with a bunch of sounds. Also the cleans sound good, it's just that gain that sounds harsh to my ears.

Great little amp with punch

By Rick Foxx from Shelton, Wa. on March 23, 2020 Music Background: Proffesional

I was impressed with this little amp from the moment I plugged it in...it has loads of tube like tone for your electric guitar or it's even great with just an acoustic guitar and a mic. One of the things that always bothered me about these types of modeling amps is that they sound great until you use your ear buds or headphones...then most of them suck... the tone changes and or it is just not loud enough and you can't turn it up anymore so your straining to hear anything or as i said it's just a crappy tone coming through the phones (I have really nice phones and buds so that's not it). I have a Blackstar id core 10, Marshall code 50, Fender mustang 11, Line 6 Spyder, Zoom G1 FOUR etc, etc and these only work well without earbuds or phones. To be honest I have purchased and tried dozens of other modeling amps and hand held modeling effects boxes as well and this amp is the only one that I can sit in front of the T.V., wear my ear buds and enjoy the tone I dial in as well as play live... I can even program in the exact tone I like and recall it with the push of a button every time I sit down to play. IMHO everyone needs this little amp in there arsenal...and hey, for just a little more cash they have this in a 100 watt version with a couple more features...the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I would really like to see this come with a pedal...but not a major deterrent. Kudos to you Boss keep up the good work.

Deal of the century

By Tim from Muddville on March 10, 2020 Music Background: Lifetime lover of of music

This amp is small, light, flexible and is loud enough to gig with. One complaint is that is does not have an included foot-switch.Its been years since I purchased a Line 6 Duotone for about six hundred bucks and it was not as punchy as this amp. If you get past the initial pain of installing the firmware this amp is great. There many videos out there to do this on YouTube as the Boss manuals are not exactly well written. The effects alone are worth the price of admission. The Univibe is pretty convincing and easy to use. The acoustic channel is great and my Yamaha AC5R sounds wonderful through it.The more time you spend with the Katana the more you will like it. In the mid nineties a multi effects floor pedal (Digitech RP5) was about the same price as the Katana 50...Now you get a direct recording interface, access to most of Boss effects, and a little amp that is loud enough to peel paint.

I'm kind of impressed.

By Wayne K. from New York City on March 9, 2020

Admittedly, I bought my Boss Katana 50 just to jump on the modelling amp bandwagon. I wasn't expecting much (despite the hype); but was pleasantly surprised by how far digital modeling technology has come in the past ten years. The control panel isn't as intuitive as it could be. The Vox Cambridge 50 is much easier to navigate. But the real reason I took a star off is that my ears can still tell that it's a digital modeling amp that I'm hearing. The harmonics in particular just don't sound right to me. My main amps are a VoxAC30 and AC15, which the Katana can't hold a candle to for sheer tonal bliss. But the Katana is a great "all in one package" grab & go amp for when you just want to head over to a friend's house to jam and don't want to be burdened with a ton of gear

Sounds great, a bit complicated to tap into effects

By J Stamp from Austin, TX on November 13, 2019 Music Background: Home noodler since college....

Pro: For the money, this amp sounds great at low and high volume. Comes with a lot of effects to play with.

Con: Difficult to tap into all of the effects. In the "Panel mode", aka manual mode, you do not get a lot to mess with. You are limited to 1 bank of two channels in that mode and only a few effects. Hooking to a computer, you get a huge amount of options and can change the channels at to about anything. But if a computer is not near, you are limited to change them. Either keep the amp near a computer or have a laptop ready.

Would be nice if there was a phone app that could make changes quickly.

Still would recommend, but could be beat by another company that solves the above "annoyances".

Strange amp

By Sweetwater Customer on October 27, 2019 Music Background: not new to playing guitar by any means

This is a strange amp to figure out. I knew this would be the case coming in though. Some youtube videos will help you figure out how to get the sounds you want. Great reviews were why I bought it. The price was good. I am not a fan of using a computer to edit, and this is built on that premise. Again I knew that going in. I wish I would have spent more money and got the 1oo, just so I could loop with it. But, I knew this would happen and I tell myself loop wit my other amps. Overall this is a unique amp and eventually you will find tones you like. Having the ability to use 5 effects is why I wanted it. And if you take the time to edit and save presets you can find lots more effects that aren't on the factory settings. You can also dial in those effects if you dive in. I wish I could access all the effects from the panel, but then the price point would be way up there. DOn't expect too much, and you should be surprised as to how much you get. I am happy and I didn't have to spend an arm and a leg for this amp. I like it.

Great amp once you dial in tones

By Jim dewd guitars from Lenzburg, IL on October 17, 2019 Music Background: YouTube guitarist/guitar instructor

I got this amp for practicing licks when I'm not home or giving guitar lessons and it's a really great sounding amp. Very portable and not super heavy so you can take it with you and it won't kill your back. I will say it's VERY TREBLE HEAVY! so it will take some time getting the tones dialed in. Once you have a nice tone dialed it this amp is super fun to jam out with and it's very loud for 50 watts. The effects are a really cool feature and the brown sound variation is my personal favorite channel at the moment ( think modern marshall tone). The cleans are super crystal clear and when the amp is pushed is has that perfect amount of break up that I've come to love from my tube amps. One thing this amp lacks is sustain but that's easily fixed by adding a boost. I wish a noise gate was included as there is some feedback but it's not a huge issue. all in all I would say this amp is great for everything I need it for and then some. There are little things that bother me but overall I'm very happy with this purchase and I would definitely recommend to any bedroom or giging musician.

Great Value

By Pete from Boston on August 20, 2021 Music Background: 35 years of tearing stuff up

I bought this after playing a 100W version for a few days at an out of town jam. I was very impressed how good it sounded with the Start I was playing. I bought the 50W because I really don't need another amp but thought I could replace my Vox Valvetronix 15W practice amp with it. I used it once at practice and while it sounded decent at home it was way too brittle for me even cutting almost all the highs out. Yes I know everything is tweakable but I have a bunch of small amps and a couple larger and don't need to waste time tweaking a practice amp. I am a tube snob but even my band mates were commenting on how brittle it was (using a Strat).
I put the Vox back and everyone agreed it sounded MUCH better. This is not a high end amp either but maybe the 100W is less brittle, I can't imagine they are any different.

So I did have a VERY positive experience with the 100W version but someone gave me that Vox amp and my main amp rig is about 6K worth of gear so there is no comparison. We practice as soft as possible these days (to save our ears hopefully) so I will stick with the Vox. It sounds much more natural to my ears but has its own strange artifacts (mostly the weird gate on everything).

This still a tremendous value for what you get, effects, acoustic amp, several flavors of regular amps, record out etc. I would probably suggest going right to the 100W. Some say there is a big sound difference but I don't know why.

Happy Jamming!

Great for the price but not exceptional

By Sweetwater Customer on May 21, 2020

I've only had this amp for 1 week. Put in about 3 hours with it.
I play a Fender Strat through it. (american deluxe? - the guitar that the american ultras replaced)
I'm been playing for 32 years.

It was so cheap I bought it on a whim because the interface has a "panel" option. I am getting rid of my Fender Mustang 3 because there is no panel option and because the Mustang 3 is just overkill on features.

The bad:
1. Thin sound...where's the beef? The old Mustang 3 kills this thing on sound quality (so far...I'm hoping maybe i just need more time on this amp to change my opinion of that)
2. The 5 gain settings seem like extensions of the gain knob...There is no major change in the flavor of your tone between the 5 settings.
3. Getting the sound from my head to the amp has been rough...that was a problem with the Mustang 3. The Fender had just too much stuff under the hood, and this amp seems only to give me one sound I like, no matter what I do.
4. The effects/gain "pedals" are not all accessible without a computer.

The good:
1. The panel is well laid out and easy to work with once you get it tailored to you through your computer.
2. There is a master eq you can adjust with your computer....I think I need to spend some time here.
3. For some reason this amp really accentuates the difference between the bridge and neck pickups on my guitar in a way the mustang 3 never did. The bridge pickup usually sounds like ace no matter what I do but this amp makes the bridge pickup a total monster...unbelievably good.

For the right person this might be a great amp, but it isn't really my cup of tea and I wouldn't buy this amp again.

Great Cleans!

By Cyrus F from Illinois on February 19, 2020 Music Background: Pro/Touring Guitarist, Producer, P&W Leader

I really dig the clean channel on this amp with pedals! As for the in-built gain, I can't say much for or against it. I don't play heavy stuff. But the crunch channel does have some nice off-clean sounds that you could get through a whole classic rock show with! I do really love the reverbs, especially the spring and modulated models. The other bonus is the power amp in! I ran direct on tour for years, and I have one particular amp sim pedal that I still love. I can stick it into the power amp in on the Katana and get those same sounds from the backline! Very cool. The last thing I'm pretty stoked about is the built-in parametric EQ. If you don't like some resonant frequency in the room, you can just tune it out. I've already found some frequencies I prefer to attenuate a bit, and I love that I have the power to do that right in the box! I would definitely say get the 100 if you want an all-in-one solution. The footswitch functionality on the little guy is pretty basic. But for pedals and portability, this thing rocks!

Not Impressed

By Sweetwater Customer on September 9, 2021

I received this amp as a requested gift. Its ok. I find that it sounds thin and too synthetic. I have 3 40watt Roland cubes which sound so much better. I was excited about the Boss Katana line but it has been dissapointing.

Good Amp, Terrible Overdrive/Distortion Sounds

By Shaun from Texas on February 15, 2020

I bought this amp to have something to mess around with at night so I wouldnt wake the neighbors, the wife and the kids. The effects on it, delay, reverb, modulation, etc. are fairly decent. The overdrives, distortions on this amp suck. Maybe I got a lemon, but the dirty channels are so fizzy and unuseable.I spent a good month messing around with it, tweaking the knobs, trying to find a decent overdrive sound out of this thing, but no luck. When I run dirt pedals through the clean channel, and the gain set low, the pedals sound pretty good. I have tried 4 different overdrives with this thing to boost the amp distortion thinking it might sound decent, but it still sounds like crap. All I hear is an annoying fizzy sound. I see where people are saying that this amp is good enough to gig with but I have to disagree with them unless you plan on running a preamp or dirt box through the clean channel. I mean... what do you expect?? Im not knocking on Boss, I love their products and have owned quite a few pedals over the years. This amp is pretty decent except for the overdrive/distortion.

All Hype

By frank ross from Bridgeville, PA on September 1, 2022

It's just a bedroom practice amp.

I didn’t love it…

By Sweetwater Customer on March 10, 2022 Music Background: Complete idiot with more gear than sense.

I didn't get to play much electric guitar for 3 years because I went back to college and worked full time. Once I got my new diploma, I was excited to get back at it. I plugged into my Fender Blues Jr…and after 15 minutes it just died. So, I pulled out my old Peavey Classic 30 I never play, and after 30 seconds it died too.

So, I took them to be repaired. For what that cost, I could have got a brand new amp.

Later, I was thinking I could have just got a Boss Katana for 1/2 of what it cost to fix those amps. So, for no good reason I ordered one.

I played with it, and I just didn't like it. I know it has received rave reviews - but I thought it kinda sucked. Granted - all the knobs and features were way over my head, and I only spent about 15 minutes playing with the knobs. After having it for a few weeks I decided it just wasn't for me.

Strange I didn't like it - I have a Katanna mini and I love it.

For what these cost. I'd save a few more bucks and shop used. I have seen some crazy deals on Fender Hot Rods with two tens, and other uses tube amps. You just have to be patient.

I could see this being big with kids and teenagers. For the cost you can get some metal tones, and it is affordable enough and it can hang in a crappy teenaged band. And it cuts down to 1/2 a watt - so your parent won't kill you when you are practicing at 3 AM - setting yourself up to get crap grades in high school and sabotage your future.

Its an amp I guess

By Jerry on November 18, 2020 Music Background: 1.5 years on guitar

If you're the type of person who uses a bunch of effects maybe this is the amp for you but if you're like me and just use distortion and maybe delay or reverb just get something else. I'm mainly a blues and rock kinda player and I couldn't get a sound I really liked out of this thing, the distortion just sounds kind of lifeless (weirdly enough I could get a nice Metallica sound). The effects are just strange, the three reverbs all sound the same as do the delays, the single knob controls make it challenging to get specific sounds with the effects, there is a tap tempo but its only for the delay despite there being several effects that would benefit from having tap tempo. The boosts are weird too, option one just adds more hum and makes my sound brighter, option two is actually helpful for a high gain sound and option three adds so much gain its unusable. Just save up another hundred bucks and get a used vox ac4, marshal MG or a fender super champ.

Not so good unless you want lots of bells and whistles

By Don Lessnau from Redford, MI on January 25, 2020

I have to amend my earlier review. I was too quick. At first, I liked it but after 3 hours, I didn't. Couldn't get any full, warm, clean tones except with the acoustic channel. The clean channel was very thin and I'd rarely use the others. And even with the 12" speakers, the 3 band EQ didn't offer much range. Even with the bass at 10 and the mids and treble rolled all the way back, it was still a pretty thin clean tone. Not my cup of tea.

Not enough for gigs at all

By Stephan Badreau from Houston on June 17, 2022 Music Background: Professional guitarist

I owned the katana 100 so I had good hopes for this one and the reviews seemed ok. It's not at all an amp for professionals no matter the size of the venue. The tones are passable. It's a good amp for teenage bedroom players though. I traded mine away after playing through for 30 minutes.
I still don't understand why Roland/Boss retired the Cube 80. Now that was a great amp.

Boss Katana-50 MkII 1x12 50-watt combo amp

In all fairness, this is probably a great amp. The onr that I got had some serious issues with unwanted modulation ettects. Even after talking with technical support at Sweetwater we could not fix the issue. Turns out that I had a defective amp. Kingsley Davis-Uzoe, my sales engineer was more than helpful in resolving this. I traded it in on a Line 6 Spider V.

loud buzzing on anything but clean channel.

By Thomas Cameron from Newtown, CT on February 6, 2023

I bought this amp several years ago. When set to anything other than clean the amp buzzes loudly and happens only when cables are connected (not a guitar issue). After much searching the software has a noise suppressor that helps this issue; however a computer is required to connect to the amp to address the problem. Would not buy this amp again and unless this issue is fixed would not recommend it at all.

Impossible to download and use Tone Studio

By Kevin on October 12, 2022

I have a Windows 11 computer and I know how to download software. Some observations:

Boss' website does not state clearly the order in which to download drivers, programs, etc. without doing a deep dive.

Once I figured that out, I downloaded the most up to date program and MK II update. I launched the app and it stated I do not have the most up to date version. I deleted all and reinstalled numerous times all with the same result.

The software would not let me make adjustments to the amp because of the non up to date version.

Overall, a very frustrating experience and I will be returning the amp.

Horrible Tone

I read the reviews and after watching the Antertons guy review it and play it...I thought, **** thats a lot of tone for the money...Im not sure if they tweeked the unit they demo, but mine literally sounds like a $6.00 clock radio. The hi gain is called brown and its pure garbage! And it never gets any better. I own a Spark and it eclipses this thing in every category...DO NOT BUY THIS OVER HYPED AMP!

Drivers don't work

By Trace on December 15, 2020

If you have windows 7, you will not get the drivers working properly. will not be able to record. will not be able to use the software to customize your sounds. The Boss website support is very poor and hard to understand. difficult to find what you need. the instructions refer to tabs and links that do not exist. I don't understand why they don't sign the drivers. so its a great little and but that is all it is, is an amp. none of the other functionality is practical or doable in windows 7 and there is now support for it. There are several "work arounds" but none are permanent. and a few won't work in windows 7.

I do not recommend.!

Hilariously bad sound.

By Dan from Portland on October 9, 2020 Music Background: 25 years of guitarring

I bought this amp because a friend of mine has the 100 watt version and raves about it and I was looking to get something smaller and lighter than my Fender Deville 212. This amp is definitely smaller and lighter, but the sound it produces on the lead and crunch channel is absolutely awful. The clean channel is ok at best (though not terrible). I guess this amp would be good for a 12 year old beginner on a budget, but for an adult who wants acceptable tone, this is not it.

Ok sound, worst programming ever seen!

By John Chauncey from Soddy Daisy, TN on April 16, 2020 Music Background: 30 yrs of metal

Got mine new... Fiddling with it, and fiddling with it and thought.., surely this isn't this difficult to navigate. After learning it, yep, sorriest I've ever seen. Recieved with out of date programming, not letting me into effects to adjust them, Unable to link amp to computer due to faulty programming. Even if I could, would have to follow a 50 step procedure, opening, downloading, extracting zip files, dropping and dragging sh!t from one folder to another. All just to update the program! Then I look over at my plug and play 15 yr old Fender Mustang... That I'm able to do 10x more operations with half as many control knobs and wonder… What... happened to the Boss corporation?! But it did sound ok a couple of times during the 5 hrs of my life I wasted on the piece...!

Hype

By Mike Lister from U.S. on December 20, 2019 Music Background: Playing for 45 years.

All the reviews stating how good and wonderful this amp is, is just hype. Lots of bells and whistles to tinker with but the tone just isn't there. The speaker is thin sounding, lots of plastic and the controls are not very ergonomic. Out of the box it sounds weak. If you work real hard through the library you can get a sound that is a bit better but honestly, it's not worth it. I hade a Peavey Vyper that was much more user friendly and sounded better, it also cost less to buy.

Don’t waste your money
