Miles ahead of the rest

This is built like a tank, fits in your pocket, sounds better than anything else out there, buy a $6 dock cable because the Apple dock has no hard-connection and you can forget all the other stuff.... read more [+] /> The studiotrack iOS for ipad, or 4 track for iphone work seamlessly, with no latency.......most of the cheap stuff, aka IK multimedia etc don't have any Apple certification for the dock, so your stuck with the headphone analog phone input.....go figure, really noisy.
I have had no problems using GuitarJack with garageband, but prefer the Guitartone/Studiotrack option from Sonoma Wire Works. If you want the best, get this unit, its the bomb!
PS. Don't start using it with non certified Apple products. in other words, if your budgets $20, save it for 8 weeks and buy GuitarJack, you'll have a Pro Audio- 2 instrument input device you can use for years to come. close [-]

This is a great interface with low/no noise and latency. I actually use this in a live situation to process my guitar. It works great with airturn Bluetooth pedals and the Jamup Pro XT app. I would re... read more [+]commend this to anyone who wants a great connection to their ipad. close [-]

Great... BUT... big but!

I'll keep this short and sweet:
Pros:
- Built like a tank
- With the 4-Track (purchased separately) you can make great recordings and also can be used with Garageband
- Th... read more [+]e electronics inside must be top notch as it records flawlessly

Con (Just one but a considerable one)
- Like I said; it's built like a tank and therefore a bit heavy... As a dongle its weight is its own worst enemy. Even the slightest movement or pull or literally breathing on it pulls it from the iPad (In fairness; I guess it stays better in place with the iPhone)... The solution? - I had to spend an extra $30 on a connector extension (which is yet to arrive) to solve the irritating bother of constant disconnects from my iPad due to the weight of the GuitarJack2.

Other wise it is a fine piece of equipment... just sorry I couldn't rate it a 5. close [-]

Excellent on paper, Poor in practice

The connectivity options are fantastic (it's more than just a guitar tool) and the AD/DA is superior to the other iOS product I have on hand (Fostex AR-4i) producing way less self-noise. The possibili... read more [+]ty of using it in the future at 24-bit was a main selling point for me. It also is powered by the iOS device making it *almost* super-portable (see below).

Too bad everything else didn't work out.

My first major gripe is the connector. The design of the GuitarJack means the body does not sit flush with any of the iOS devices I have (iPod Touch, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS). It also does not lock. This means the GuitarJack disconnects at the slightest movement. Even something as trivial as tapping the Home Button can disconnect the device. Apple is partially to blame because most of the new iOS devices have poor 30-pin placement BUT Sonoma Wireworks should have worn their thinking caps and either included an extension cable or made it cable-based in the first place. Instead, they sell an extension cable for an additional $30. Because of this, the GuitarJack has to sit absolutely still which makes it useless as a portable device.

Second, support for the device is limited. Several apps I tried it with had "issues" ranging from incorrect pitch detection (TC's Polytune) to not recognizing the GuitarJack at all (iK's line of apps). To get it to work with Positive Grid's JamUP (the guitar app I ultimately chose) I have to open the Sonoma WW app first. There is also no dedicated GuitarJack app for adjusting settings. You have to use their modeler or tone-shaper or recording app to switch inputs, adjust gain, etc... That's a lot of popping and fizzing going on in your ears if you're using a third-party app.

Third, the latency is pretty bad using the Sonoma applications. This may or may not be the fault of the hardware as I was able to overcome this deficiency with the JamUP app mentioned above.

There's lots of promise with this device but, without shelling out $30-40 extra dollars, it falls short of what could have been. close [-]
