Live or Recording: Amazing

by Rob A. from Schenectady, NY USA

I have had this product for a while now and I’m a faithful Zoom fan…starting with the Zoom 505. This unit is built like a tank…and looks like one! Right out of the box, the pre-stored patches will i... read more [+]mmediately grab your interest and the classic Zoom features (ZNR) are available at your fingertips.

The learning curve on this unit is mid-level steep, but it’s worth it to explore the manual and dive into the available features. For instance, when playing live or recording direct, you will want to make sure you are on the right setting as it does make a difference.

The A/B Channel switch is a great feature and when set-up properly, you can toggle between the two in a live performance and take a solo, and then immediately revert back to your rhythm patch. The options with effects, tone and eq are endless.

I’ve recorded direct with this and without amps, this unit mimics a warm tube amp. The warmness is controlled via the accelerator and energizer functions and trust me, you’ll hear the difference. The effects and patches are in no way processed. The reverbs are warm and roomy as well as the delays and other spacial effects. The amp features are numerous and easily tweaked to your liking. So many effects and such little time! But, you’ll find yourself exploring new tones and possibilities long after your purchase

As indicated, it’s built like a tank and I’ve had no issues thus far. Creating, storing and naming patches are a breeze when you get the hang of it. The manual is easy to follow and provides useful shortcuts and tips. Also, the amps, stomp-boxes, effects are singled out in the manual which is nice to see what options the unit has.

So, if you are direct recording or playing live, this is a versatile unit that has it all….and, has it all for the best price out there. Hats off to Zoom for continually providing a solid product for the money. close [-]

With two tubes you can't go wrong.

With 32 bit DSP, 24 bit A/D/A conversion and 96 kHz sampling I think Zoom has nailed the modeling thing. Spend a little time reading the manual, USB the unit to a computer, and then plug in the MIDI c... read more [+]ables to use the software editor.

By way of comparison, I was still using my trusty Johnson J-Station then going into Logic's Amp Designer and getting great results. I was hesitant to upgrade my amp modeling setup because I wanted my next purchase to be my last in this regard. I was contemplating Digi's Orange Rack Box, but at $900 I just couldn't justify the cost. Sure ProTools LE was included but PT ain't my favorite DAW.

The G9.2tt is simply incredible. You have your choice of all-tube distortion to all-Solid State or a combination of both at the preamp stage. Polish it off with a final tube at the output stage. Twist the knobs to add a little or a lot. Including real tubes makes all the difference. No starved-plate design here - you're guaranteed to hear the tubes in action. In the software editor enable the Cabinet effect, pick a cabinet type, select your mic type and move it around on screen. Before too long you'll have a killer amp going.

You could get a plug-in like Revalver but having real-world knobs to twist always beats the virtual thing for me. I'm more than happy with all the included effects, but I am more of a minimalist when it comes to using Reverb, Chorus, Flanger, etc. Just enough to get the job done but not enough that it's obvious. Having a multi-effects pedal is nice and convenient but buy the G9.2tt for all the different distortions you can create.

A digital connection like the usual S/P DIF or TOSLINK connection would have been a nice touch but the USB connection works just fine as is.

One design flaw that Zoom can easily fix with an update is: the tube and solid state levels for ea. patch are not stored with ea. patch. Say you have a nice, distorted tube amp sound going, well when you press the CH A/B button for your clean amp, you get all the distorted tube sound that you had on your distorted amp. Just a minor inconvenience but not enough to keep me from singing its praises.

From Clean to Mean, there's no sound you can't create with this unit.

The thing is built like a tank and should last for many, many years. The $299 asking price is practically a steal for a modeling amp with two actual tubes.

You'll be glad you bought it. close [-]

Zoom G9.2tt

I was in a gigging band a few years back, and have been recording music at home for over 15 years, and in all of that time, I don't think I have ever been satisfied with my guitar sound. That just ch... read more [+]anged.
I received the Zoom unit about three weeks ago, and I find a reason to like it more every day. Right out of the box, this thing is inspirational. Great sounds, and really quiet. I mainly use a mid 90's Strat, but even my old Ibanez RG570 sounded awesome through the G9.2tt.
As good as this unit sounded coming through my Fender amp, I was even happier when I did some direct recording. The clean patches sound beautiful, and the preamps on this thing are amazing. I may never put a mic in front of my amp again.
I haven't owned a bunch of multi FX units like some of the other guys who reviewed here, so I can't compare it to other units. But for the price, I can't imagine anything sounding better or having more flexibility. A very, very useful recording tool. close [-]

I play in various bands playing covers from ear friendly blues, rock, reggae to heart-pounding, ear shattering metal music and this GEM really provide me with all the tones specific for each genre!!I hardly use any of my analog pedals!!
The Z-pedal feels to me like a vast tonal universe as ZOOM promise the limit would only be to the users imagination.Imagine,8 effect types can be use at once on the z-pedal alone + 4 on the left pedal!!WOW!!
There are 2 channels with independent pre-amp/Eq settings and the pre-amp really captured sound it represents!!If your after tones of your fave artists or to craft ur own trademark, this is the cheapest way to start with.
Man, If i tell you more this space will not suffice,.Go out and get one, It`ll save u a room space and I`m sure ur excess pedals will make great Gifts!! close [-]
