Great For Midi Expression

By Dave Siebels from Burbank, CA on August 19, 2022 Music Background: Film composer, keyboard player and jazz artist

Just received my DVP Volume pedal. I am using it as a midi expression controller with Digital performer. As an organ player, I am particular about volume pedals and this one has a perfect feel and sweep. It is smooth and feels solid and substantial. I have used many volume/expression pedals over the years and this is by far the best I have tried.

This product was recommended by my sales engineer Randy. It is well built, sturdy and volume control pedal is very smooth.

My 2nd One

By Bobby Lane from Asheville, NC on July 11, 2019 Music Background: pro guitarist for 25+ years

this is an excellent volume/expression pedal.. I've had one for my volume pedal for a few years.. and it's worked great.. so recently when I needed to replace my expression pedal this was a no brainer.. and Greg Savino who has been my sales associate for many years took good care of me and got the shipment out very quickly.. so props first to Dunlop on an excellent product.. and props to Greg and the Sweetwater company.. with me they have a loyal customer.

It’s a good one!

I think it"s a great pedal! I typically use it for swells at my church for ambience...it gets the job done!! The construction is pretty tough which is awesome! I recommend this to anyone looking around for a "quality volume pedal!"

Great decision!

This arrived today to replace my VP JR that hasn't been the same since I replaced the string. I swapped it out on my board real quick before a musical theater rehearsal where I'm riding the volume pedal for the whole show. The Volume X feels fantastic and I'm convinced that my tone also had more clarity. I was using the tuner out on both the VP JR and the Volume X.

I did have hesitancy about the Volume X before I bought it but I didn't want to spring for a $300 volume pedal. This significantly surpassed my expectations and now I regret that I didn't buy this sooner.

1.5 years later. Smooth and Reliable!

By Peter Birchenough from Hawaii on September 22, 2017 Music Background: Worship guitarist at New Hope Oahu Sand Island; Owner of Mach One Guitar Academy

Been using the Volume X for over a year now (bought in 4/16) and am really happy with it as a volume pedal. It's sturdy and smooth just like you would want. There is no noise in this pedal, it doesn't suck your tone and it stays where you put it. I really like the ability to plug in my tuner without it being in my chain AND having it on all the time.

I read a review about someone who purchased an early unit and said that it eventually became loose and wouldn't stay where they had it. This concerned me, so I wrote Dunlop before purchasing and Jon Fryman, Dunlops Electronics Technician wrote me immediately and said that they did have this problem early on and had since fixed the issue. He even sent me a picture showing me where the problematic bushing were on the early model and explained the fix in detail. Wow! Super pleased with Dunlop support and again I have never had an issue with this pedal after a year and a half.

In fact, the reason I am writing today is because I'm thinking about buying a second as an expression pedal for my Strymon.

6 month review

Great pedal, very smooth. Currently using as a volume pedal my board and very happy after 6 months of use. No noticeable changes in tone. Very reliable.

Dunlop Volume (X) review

By Marc from Denver, CO on August 4, 2016 Music Background: Bass player, 20 years experience

This passive volume pedal is one of the best I've played on. I run my tuner off the pedal to keep the tuner out of my chain. I can also use the volume pedal as an expression! Rugged and yet sleek design. A must have on a pedal board.

Best Volume Pedal Ever!

I've tried them all and this one is simply the best and most versatile of them all.

Perfect

By Eric from USA on January 14, 2014 Music Background: Musician

No tone suck at all! Super smooth pedal. I was previously using an Ernie Ball Jr. The Jr is a great pedal too but over time the pot wore out and the string started to stretch. I realize they have repair kits but after 10 years it was time for something new. This pedal is all that and a bag of chips. Same size and form factor as my dunlop jerry cantrell wah. 5 stars on this one!!

Spooty quality. Do not last very long

By Christopher Cutter from Oceanside, CA on May 23, 2020

This is my third or so pedal. The first one suddenly lost all resistance on the treadle and no longer would stay in the up position. I had bought that used and it was old. I sent it back to Dunlop in Benicia and waited a few weeks only to have it sent back not fixed. Sent it back again and they realized it was not fixable. They nicely offered me another a new one at a discount. I got the mini. But then I had another full size one and the metal band on the swing arm busted and that was not fixable Now I have the mini, (which is nice but not as easy to control), and my brand new full size one and guess what? It goes "crunch, crackle" as I push it all the way down. Still usable but the thing started doing this right when it went out of warranty. The housings are built solid as brick house, but the guts are fragile.

Quality is everything. Get it together, Dunlop.

Very disappointed

By Mark Anderson from Washington on June 18, 2017

After using this pedal about 10 times, it started making a crackling sound when the toe end of the pedal is completely depressed. The pedal was never exposed to dust, dirt or water: it is in pristine condition. To fix it I glued a shim under the toe to limit the travel by about 3/16". It was an easy solution, but one I shouldn't have had to make on what is essentially a new pedal.

Disappointed

By Sweetwater Customer from IN on October 21, 2018 Music Background: 11 years of guitar playing

I had this pedal for a day before it went out on me. I bought it brand new and within less than 24 hours the traction went out on the pedal. I was really disappointed because I had been wanting this for a while and it was bad after just a few hours of use. I like dunlop but I was just disappointed with this.

Dunlop Volume X Expression Pedal

By Andy from United States on January 18, 2015 Music Background: Touring musician

Previously owned a DVP1 and that pedal was bullet proof. Years of use and still going strong. Received this for Christmas and it lasted 20 days. The friction unit gave out. Sending back to sweetwater for a replacment.

Perhaps a defect?

By Raymond Cho from Cerritos, CA on October 24, 2021

I bought this pedal new and it worked as expected for a few months. It was always stored in my pedal board case. Never abused. However after about the 1 year mark after warranty expired, this pedal stopped working properly. The volume control isn't smooth. It will be muted if I put my foot down. The moment I lift my foot, the signal pops in abruptly at like 80% until at top position it will go to 100% volume.

So basically, it can't do swells anymore which is what I bought this for. It's muted with my foot down, 80%, and 100%. No smooth transitions. Useless now.

Consistent problems

By Karlin Wiens from CA on July 24, 2019

I got one, wary of the problem of crackling issues that was reported by other reviewers, but decided to try one out. Sure enough, there are crackling and shorting issues right at the point of being pushed at full volume. So, decided to return and try to get another one, because I actually like this pedal and sure enough, same problem. Don't waste your money rolling the dice on this. Dunlop, you have a great pedal that consistently does not work. A little quality control would go a long way.

Dunlop Volume X

By Dave from Texas Gulf Coast on December 21, 2015 Music Background: Professional Musician

This pedal has really smooth sweep for a volume pedal. However, they break too easy. I am writing this review while "on Hold" waiting to talk to a Sweetwater rep. Two in a row have broke . The 1st one went bad with in a month. This one lasted about three months. What happens is the pedal will stop holding in position. ( no matter how tight I adjusted the tension control) it just falls to the full on position. This is the second one that did this in less than six months of less than normal use. " I do not constantly ride this pedal nor do I use it at every gig" I feel that this is a design flaw. Though Sweet water will fix it free for the next 2 years. I am already out shipping cost to send it to them. The function of this pedal is very good. The design and durability totally suck! I will soon purchase another brand as I do not trust this pedal at all.

ohhhh, really, Dunlop?

By David Cayce from Ringwood, NJ on February 18, 2015 Music Background: Pro Musician

Yeah, almost a decent pedal... there's just one HUGE problem: it's not switchable between the volume & expression sides. You have to get down on the floor and completely reroute the guitar signal to switch from expression to volume, or invest in an elaborate by-pass AB switching configuration, giving up valuable pedalboard real estate. What Dunlop has done here is the equivalent of designing a really nice car that the driver has to come to a complete stop in order to shift gears in.

Just a little on the extremely dumb side, Dunlop, rendering the Volume (X) extremely worthless.

Great until it broke during Live playing

By Dale Cross from Raleigh on February 8, 2015 Music Background: Working musician

Thought this was a great pedal until it locked up on me during our last song. It stuck in the up position, so I had NO volume. I reached underneath and felt what I thought was a ribbon near the shaft mechanism. Due to how tight my pedalboard is and how secure everything is mounted, I couldn't bypass it to finish the song. Not good in front of an audience!!! I may have had it a year and take extremely good care of my equipment. Stays mounted on my board which is kept cased when not in use. This was not abused at all. After looking at it closer, the thin metal ribbon that has some type of sensor on it, snapped in two. Apparently it rotated around a roller. I would think for $120 this would last longer than a year. I only use it on the weekends. I bought an Ernie Ball last night, will not be using Dunlop in the future due to poor quality.
