Electro-Harmonix Bad Stone Phase Shifter Pedal Reviews

Phase Shifter with Rate, Feedback, Manual Shift, and Auto/Manual Controls

Electro-Harmonix Bad Stone Phase Shifter is a faithful reproduction of the '70s original with a few updates for modern guitar players. This classic pedal houses a six-stage phase shifter that gives your sound deep and lush phase tones. The manual phase mode lets you dial in the perfect filtered tone like a "cocked wah" sound. The Bad Stone also includes a feedback control, which allows you to contour the effect to taste. Take it from the Sweetwater crew - from slow swooshing sounds to fast warbles and even static filter tones, the Electro-Harmonix Bad Stone Phase Shifter has you covered.

By Pejo from Spencer on July 3, 2023 Music Background: Put a hurt on ya if I gotta

I got this pedal a little over a year ago and loved it gave a good review then it stated making interference noise and I gave it a bad review lol, called my sales guy and he hooked me up with sweetwater service team,I mailed them the pedal when they couldn't fix it they sent me a new pedal it prob was a fluke I got a bad one so all good with EH and Sweetwater,I wouldn't buy gear anywhere else!

NICE!

By Michael O'Daly from Easley, SC on January 5, 2023

I've had my eye on this phaser pedal for a while but then I came across a 1/2 price Warm Jet Phaser. After getting the warm Jet I noticed that it had horrible volume drop when engaged. I got the Bad Stone to see if that drop was inherent to other phasers. The Bad Stone had no volume drop and the phasing is everything I had hoped for. I really like the manual mode as well (probably the main reason I wanted the Bad Stone rather than the Small Stone).

Very pleased

I have owned the originals from the 70's,the bad stone and small stone and I love this one the most! The manual switch is awesome and it sounds great! I'm not getting any unwanted noise and the switch isn't popping on me(the originals did) so glad to get this totally impressed, buy it already

Grat Phaser

Old school EH style phasing that works great for me. I like the 6-step phasing as well as the range on the feedback and the rate knobs. Gets nice and drippy and is super smooth. Has a little bit of that old-school zappa vibe at certain settings which I really dig. And it combines wonderfully with my other effects for creating some cool sounds. Little bit of a pop when switched, but tis really not bad at all. No volume drop either. Basically inaudible when Im actually playing. Nice simple layout, super easy to use and it has a ice 3-dimensional sound when set right. Definitely the right phaser for my board and was what I Was looking for in a phaser. I haven't really tried the Manual shift feature yet, aside from just turning the knob with it on. Definitely some cool potential in that realm. But as a straight up phaser I really like the sound. Good sound and effect quality. Nice and rich and full.

The bad stone pedal

I think that this pedal is good addition to my pedalboard as this pedal has a very good range of settings to be used I think myself that it's a must have

The best

No. Really. The best.
Sounds LUSH. And the manual switch is such a great idea.

Vintage phaser sound

By Allen from Escanaba, Michigan on April 4, 2019 Music Background: 48 years of guitar/4 years of ukulele

Back in the 1970's I played a Small Stone. When it was time to get another phase shifter I didn't really think twice about going with EHX. The decision was whether to go with another Small Stone or bump to the Bad Stone. I took the plunge with the Bad Stone and don't regret doing so for one moment's time. The vintage phase shifter sound of this pedal is just amazing. And being able to lock it into any spot of the oscillation for specific effects is just cool. This is a great pedal for anyone's pedal board.

Great Stone

By Mike from New York on August 23, 2018 Music Background: Guitarist, vocalist, composer (over 30 years experience)

I have been using the Boss Phase Shifter (PH-3) for a few years now, great pedal very versatile. Just got the Bad Stone a couple of weeks ago. It does not have the versatility regarding settings of the PH-3, but it does have a real great sound all its own, a warm, rich sound and the parameters of the rate and feedback settings are quite wide. I also love the manual setting too - disconnects the LFO and allows you to dial in a range setting and freeze it - really cool. Would also like to mention Chris Barry - knowledgeable, professional, works very fast, and is very friendly - great customer service.

Bad Stone is bad to the bone!

Love this pedal. Sounds great through my Marshal!

Exactly as expected

By Jack Tozzi from West Springfield, MA on December 23, 2016

It was this or an MXR. I've owned MXRs in the past and wanted to try something different. The Bad Stone is a winner. Vintage sound with modern switching and, I hope, reliability. For the price, I don't see how you can go wrong.

Electro-Harmonix Bad Stone Phase Shifter

By Steve from Jennings, La on December 17, 2015 Music Background: 40 years playing guitar...........

Don't get me wrong I love the MXR Phase 90, who doesn't? But this pedal is much better...........I use it in the manual position with the shift at about 1 o'clock, it's usually on all the time. This is a great pedal and in the auto mode it has the MXR again with FeedBack knob. Price is great. If want a phase pedal, this is the one to get.

Love it

fair price point, good sound, and it can be powered by 9 bolt battery.

Reissue is better than the original

By Dickie Doom from Chicagoland on June 29, 2022 Music Background: semi retired bar stage cranker

I had a bad stone in the 1970's it was great then, but now the new version lets you sweep even lower frequencies for a greater palette of colors to paint with.

Phase shifting again

By Mark Brewer from Nebraska on April 8, 2022 Music Background: In country bands for 46 years

I haven't had a phase shifter in years but I play some waylon that really needed it.
This pedal is perfect for that

Excellent Phaser

By Stephen from Saratoga Springs, NU on August 24, 2020 Music Background: Playing since 1971.... home studio.

The Bad Stone phaser is an excellent phaser... much deeper than the Small
Stone. I do find that, to my ears, it is a bit metallic sounding as are most EHX modulation effects. The Pigtronix Envelope Phaser is warmer and more versatile.
As always, Aaron was immensely helpful.

Bad Stone Great Pedal

By Steve from Grand Rapids Mi on April 25, 2018 Music Background: 40 yrs Guitar and Bass

So i bought the Electro -Harmonix Bad Stone recently to replace Ibanez FL-9 ....
after a lot of research the Bad Stone seemed like the one to take a chance on
and… it's worth it....you get a two trick pony out of this pedal....in auto mode
I set the rate at 10 O'clock ...feedback at 10 O'clock as well and run it after my
EHX Soul Food ....not though the effects loop....and it sounds great just the
amount of sweep i was looking for....But it has a second trick...switch the toggle
to manual and the shift knob at around 8 O'clock and you get a filter type effect.
This pedal is already a permanent member of my pedal board...and the guys
at Sweetwater got it to me in less than 2 days from the time I paid for it so that's
FAST !!! .....I would recommend this pedal ...I have bought several EHX pedals
in last 10 years not all were great this one is a winner ...also like Soul Food Overdrive
and a Canyon Delay are permanent members of my pedal board and THERE MADE
IN USA ...another good reason to buy EHX.

Small Stone With Extra Versatility

By Eric Fisher from West Lafayette, Indiana on May 21, 2017

I was recently quite content to get another Small Stone to replace my long-gone original, but the Bad Stone came back on the scene and I ended up buying it instead. I won't overrated it, but it does just what the phase shifter should do, and some more.

I would say the overall sound is similar - essential 70-s-style phase shifting, with the added versatility of manually adjustable depth and better feedback control - to the Small Stone. The manual mode reminds me of the Electric Mistress filter matrix mode and can be dialed in to expand your lead tones, but I intend to buy a Mistress anyway as it has a much more pronounced 'stop' sound in the filter cycle effect if that's what you're looking for.

The Bad Stone would be better with a blend knob so it doesn't overpower the signal; it makes a bit of line noise as well. If your phase shifter needs are simple for guitar or bass, I'd stick with the Small Stone, but the Bad Stone does provide another level of control to work with. Either one provides great, funky phasing.

Cmon man

By Camarda from Spencer, MA on June 23, 2023 Music Background: Been playing over 50 yrs

I got this pedal a year ago and was very happy with it,then it just started making noises and I pulled it off my board and no more noise, ran it alone on battery and on a one spot and same issues so it's useless until I get it fixed and pretty disappointing when you have cheap pedals that hold up way better I def will be avoiding this company,I hate to bash anyone but it doesn't even say made in USA on this one it's like a $ pedal but it doesn't last like one, lesson learned

good, but intense

By Mike on January 27, 2020 Music Background: amateur noisemaker

Overall im happy, but it def isn't a flexible pedal. Even using the feedback control, its always VERY present. However for $... its a bargain for a super trippy pedal. it plays nice with reverb distortion and fuzz, it can also with the way it just takes a little manipulation. it does have a nice warm sound to it. construction is fantastic and bulletproof.

Great sound, bad switch

By Sweetwater Customer on February 8, 2016

My review of this is simple: it sounds wonderful - exactly as it should in a very simple nostalgic way. The price is excellent as well. Unfortunately, the switch makes a loud pop and that is the only reason for my 2.5 stars.

I bought one and returned it because of the popping switch. The replacement I received seemed better - until I got it on stage and the problem returned. I'm just going to keep it and live with it. Love the sound, hate the switch.

Also notable, Sweetwater was above and beyond in terms of their return policy and customer service. 5 stars for that!
