Best in class!!
I've used these monitors for years and just bought my 4th set. I've used them around my studio as keyboard monitors for years, then discovered that you can use both the 1/4" and XLR inputs at the same time. I plug the keyboards into the 1/4" and the output of a secondary studio monitor controller into the XLR. I now have the output from my DAW wherever I'm at in the studio which makes recording the keyboard parts so much easier without having to wear headphones all day. The frequency response is amazing, the low end is by far better and more accurate than any other monitor in this class.
This is certainly an upgrade from my AV 40s.
These are standalone powered monitors, so you (probably) need to use these through an audio interface. I paired these with a Focusrite 2i2 and the sound quality is spectacular.
Nice
Just plugged them in and the clarity is amazing and flat as a pancake. Bravo M-Audio. Keep up the great work.
The best!!!
Very good sound quality
Expressive
Outstanding choice for monitors. The reputation and legacy of these is well deserved.
M Audio BX 8 So Nice
Listened to music all my life, heard a Pair of these at friends and they are So Powerful and Clean, Can put out more then your ears can handle.
I ran into the BX 5's, am happy.
Replacement PC speakers
Needed to replace passive speakers for my PC after the amp died. Decided to go with new powered speakers and skip the amp replacement. I have M-Audio A-40's and really liked them. The BX5 is the same size as the old speakers. The speaker setup was a little more than running speaker wire, since I needed a 3.5mm out to two 1/4" jack inputs cable. However, many cables only allowed for a speaker separation of a foot due to the construction of the cable. I found an inexpensive cable that allowed me to separate the cable enough for the speakers. When I ordered the speakers from Sweetwater, they showed in stock, but turned out they had just been sold while I ordered. But another set came in the next day and they were out the door and on their way. Installation was easy and the sound was better than I expected. You will not be disappointed. They can be played loud, but with the PC, I prefer quiet listening.
M-Audio BX5
Nice monitors for the price, clean sound w/ punchy bass
ZERO customer support
These speakers are just okay--especially if you like to have your mixes colored by a the output gear. BUT, god forbid anything goes wrong. The speakers cannot be replaced, because the bolt patterns, ohmage, and power ratings are impossible to match. So, when--not if--you blow a speaker, you will have to buy a complete new set. Better to go with Yamaha, or Adams--MUCH better sound, and they will always be able to help you when--again, not if--something goes wrong.
Disappointed
My first set of BX5's were purchased around 2005 because of a compelling review in a magazine article. And they turned out to be everything I'd hoped. Plenty of clarity, presence, and power--and mated well with a sub. I guarded this set in my home studio and mixed on them for years. The dispersion angles were a little narrow, but I learned to live in the sweet spot. Then they burned down to the woofer frames in the Paradise fire of November 2018. Sad day--but just order another set, right? So I did. But this current M-Audio BX5 D3 set is NOT like my original BX5's. To me, the latest version lack the beloved clarity of the first monitors, even sound a bit hollow. Back to Sweetwater.
