An amazing microphone, that is absolutely worth having!
I've never in my lifetime of recording anything, have ever previously used dynamic microphones.
Not until this year.
But for my first go around, I decided upon the Audio-Technica AT2040, which is a USB broadcast dynamic microphone.
First of all, I'd like to say that the quality of this microphone, at least with my voice, is simply amazing.
Especially when compared to some of the other condenser microphones that I've used previously, this one has a very nice noise floor over all and for me, at least, is a huge improvement over what I was previously working with.
Talking about four inches away from the microphone, and not recording at maximum volume, is a good idea to do to help with over all sensitivity.
Normalizing levels is always a good idea rather than recording at the loudest point possible, which can lead to clipping.
The microphone has a nice frequency response, too.
If you're looking for a microphone that will give you that broadcast quality sound, you can't possibly go wrong with the Audio-Technica AT2040!
Great option for a plug & play dynamic mic
I was looking for a dynamic microphone to use with my computer and have been very happy with the AT2040 USB.
It's got the usual Audio Technica high quality fit and finish. The AT2040 USB is solidly built: the metal grill does not flex and the controls aren't flimsy. Even the capacitive mute button works surprisingly well. I can push the mute button, slide my finger across it, and it doesn't accidentally mute or unmute. I like the mute indicator light and don't find it too bright or distracting.
I just use this mic for simple things like work calls and voice chat, but I think you could use this for podcasts or streaming no problem. This dynamic picks up less background (think keyboard clacks) than other USB condensers and the hypercardioid polar pattern helps even more. The built in pop filter does a decent job at rejecting plosives, though speaking across the mic instead of right into will help even more.
My favorite feature is having all the mixing controls you'd want right on the back of the mic. I've used the Shure MV7 for a good while, and while it sounds great, I never enjoyed all the fiddling required to use their Motiv software. The AT2040 USB is as simple as plug it in, play some computer audio, and adjust your dials so you can clearly hear yourself and your system audio.
This isn't a do everything mic, but I think it's great for its intended use. It sounds very nice and I think works even better with deep voices. For $100 less than an MV7, I think this is a great bang for buck. The mic as pictured is the AT2040 USB mounted to it's shock mount, the AT8458a. It'd be nice if the shock mount wasn't so pricey, but its not an essential upgrade.
