Genelec 8351B 3-way Coaxial Powered Studio Monitor - Dark Grey Reviews

Powered 3-way Studio Monitor with Dual Concealed 250W 8" Woofers, 150W 5" Midrange, and 150W .1" Metal Dome Tweeter (each)

With a upgraded high-frequency driver and more powerful integrated amplifiers, Genelec's 8351B is a noticeable improvement on the original 8351A model. These 3-way studio monitors combine dual 8" woofers with a 5" midrange speaker and a 1" high-frequency dome tweeter. Thanks to its ACW (Acoustically Concealed Woofer) design, the 8351B offers the kind of broad sweet spot engineers here at Sweetwater look for, while Genelec's unique DCW (Directivity Control Waveguide) delivers precision stereo imaging. On top of all of this, you also get the benefits of Genelec's SAM (Smart Active Monitor) technology, which lets you automatically calibrate your 8351B studio monitors to any control room or speaker configuration.

Finally, a room I can trust

By Dave Kampel from Chapel Hill NC on April 21, 2023 Music Background: Mastering Engineer

Installed a pair of Genelec 8351bs and a 7350A Sub, and after changing out some finicky ethernet cables, got GLM room correction working. Shot the room, which is small but well treated acoustically, with Genelec's supplied calibrated mic. Put up some of the "best" of my masters and was floored by how I've been letting untamed harsh peaks and mushy inconsistent bass out in the world. The frequency response is now nicely flat, and the stereo field is so detailed you can "see" where the vocalist, guitars, keyboards and backups are on the stage in front of you. It's great to be able to use MS (e.g., on the Neve Bus Processor) to unveil a lost element near a side while keeping the lead instrument crisp and present. The joy of mastering is restored!

Best investment!!!

These are just stunning to work on.
I'm only using one at the moment and blown away by my mixes now. Can't wait to have a pair!

WOW!

By David from Seattle on September 8, 2022

These are the best studio monitors I've ever heard. While it was a costly investment, I'm blown away at how accurate these are, with tight bass, full range, and the stereo image is amazing. It's a new level of detail I've never heard before, and mixes translate perfectly. I wish I had purchased them sooner, but I'm happy my search for speakers is over :)

I know I will enjoy working with these for many years to come.

Advice: Get the GLM, it makes a huge difference to dial-in everything to your room.

Amazing Monitors for Mixing and Mastering

By Nick from Los Angeles on April 21, 2021 Music Background: Composer

If you're like me, in a non-pro room at home, you need something like these. I owned the predecessor (8250A) for several years and can trust my mixes on any source. The room correction feature is a MUST unless you have special voodoo mixing powers. I have a rectangle room with an angled ceiling. I treated it well with Auralex. The correcting software read-out looks like a roller coaster track under 100Hz. I have a natural 15DB dip at 50Hz in my room. That's with bass traps from floor to ceiling in all corners. That should help you understand how little you can trust a non-pro room. The correcting software builds an EQ curve to flatten those issues.

This new model (8351B) sounds very similar to the old but you can hear the mids more defined and the crossover to lows is almost non-existent. Also the tweeters are an improvement. I immediately noticed better stereo separation on cymbals and high-hats. Another interesting tidbit, I've use Synthogy Ivory's Steinway every day since 2005. After using these speakers, I kept thinking, "What's that little noise every time I press the sustain pedal?" Turns out Ivory sampled the depression of the sustain pedal and I never noticed it until I got these speakers. It's that kind of detail that you start picking up.

No words

If you have the money, get these. I tested many monitors from ATC, PSI, PMC, Amphion, Barefoot etc all of which are AMAZING but the ATC SCM 45's and the Genelec 8351's stood out. I don't think I need to upgrade any more.
