Much Needed Enhancement to the User Interface

By Ray Ranstrom from EDMONDS, WA on July 18, 2023

This version of the Mackie 1402 the VLZ4 makes a good mixer even better. Mackie color highlighted all the indexes on the sliders and knobs. Big thank you shout out to Mackie. Up to now (I have owned one of each version so far) I have had to use a one horsehair brush with white latex paint to be able to see the indexes.

Mackie 1402 VLZ 4

I use this unit in live performance and so far I love it. The vocal response is fantastic. I use recorded stems in my act and their reproduction is outstanding.

Mackie 1402VLZ4

By Sweetwater Customer on July 27, 2021

I use this mixer for light duty studio audio production. It replaced an identical board that had been in daily use since the 1990s but had recently developed a hum in certain channels. This does exactly what I need it to do, and cleanly!

Solid, Quiet and fully featured

By T.W.Zimmerman from Kalamazoo on December 26, 2020 Music Background: Recording Engineer

Mackie still keeps the build quality are known for. This unit has a small foot print, but is still fully featured.
I am using this as a submixer for keyboards into my interface. While the preamps dose not have quite as
much top end as the interface, this unit is better at rejecting line noise. The preamps have decent gain.
The EQ section is functional, but not outstanding. It functions as a 2 bus sub mixer easily. The internal
power supply is a big improvement over other brands. My only 'negative; is the cent indent of the
pots (EQ) is hard to 'feel'. It's there, but easy to pass trough.

Mackie all the way

I have had this mixing board for over 2 years now and it has held up wonderfully. Very solid build, quiet, and clean.

My Last Great Mackie my old 1402VLZ has retired

By Michael Burns from Jacksonville, FL on June 22, 2016

I replaced my original Mackie 1402 VLZ that I bought I think in the early 90s. It lasted this long. I received the VLZ4 just an 1 hour ago and I just simply moved all my cables over. I tested out the Effects Send ad Return, my Mic and other inputs I am using. Yea Wow I am blown away. Mackie packaged this Mixer so nice Its about the best I have ever received for a piece of Electronic Gear. The Photos here on Sweetwater just give you a hint how awesome it looks. Mackie are just the best Mixers. I almost bought the 16 channel mixer I kinda am embarrassed to say for the Light you can put on it. The 1402 VLZ4 is so cool your gonna want that light. Thank you Sweetwater and Adam for selling me this Perfect Mixer. I received it in 3 days. I couldn't ask for any thing more.

Awesome

By Sweetwater Customer from Brandon, Mississippi on June 1, 2016

It's been many years since I've owned a mixer. I did a lot of research online, looking at mixers in various stores, and I kept coming back to this one. As many have said before, this mixer is built like a tank...fit finish, and function are second to none. I finally bit the bullet and made my purchase. For my purpose, getting ready to do video podcasts, voice-overs, and more, this is a board that will be around for awhile. Looking at getting the 802VLZ4 for portable use while I keep my 1402VLZ4 in my studio.

Love this mixer

By Sweetwater Customer on August 24, 2015 Music Background: Voiceover Recording

Love the redesign of the VLZ4 (versus the VLZ3). Seems a lot less bulky on my desk and the new color scheme looks awesome. As for the sound, it's just as good if not better than the vlz3 was. I prefer using an analog mixer like this running into a digital interface, vs. a firewire or usb mixer. They sound better and give you more control of your sound in my opinion. For a short time I had experimented with the Onyx 1220i firewire mixer, but was disappointed. So I paired this mixer with the Tascam US 4X4 usb interface and it's sounds great. I highly recommend this.

ONYX Preamps

By Ken O from Austin,Texas on May 8, 2018

I have become a true believer, regarding Mackie's ONYX preamp. We have the option of using several different USB interfaces for our mobile gigs, they all get the job done with zero hassles. I use an Audient iD14 if I only need a 2-2 interface and there is no need for MIDI, it has the best sounding headphone amp of the bunch. I use a Behringer UMC404HD when I need 4 channels input with inserts and MIDI, but usually I just need a 2x2 USB w MIDI. We have the usual blue and red USB interfaces, all satisfactory units, but when I used a Mackie Producer 2-2 USB w MIDI interface and ONYX preamps it made my ears/head swivel around and take notice. They are great preamps,a whole 'nuther ballgame, and I was thrilled to find the 1402VLZ4 mixer was loaded with them and also included inserts on the mono preamp channels. It is a perfect add-on to the Producer 2-2 USB interface. Between the two, I get 2-channel i/o USB, plus 14-ch analog mixer with a ton of routing options, and channel inserts for outboard gear. I use a set of Mackie monitors, CRBT4'. They are stellar, too. I got them just to have all Mackie gear, besides everything else from Mackie was top-notch...sure enough, even these desktop monitors shine--Mackie's got it going on!! I dock a 1/2 star because Mackie could have added longer throw faders like the Allen & Heath ZED mixer that is the rival to the 1402VLZ4, pricepoint and feature-wise. Both are great mixers but the ONYX preamps out-perform all others. Amazing preamps, especially when using the inserts...studio grade performance!

I already was a believer in Mackie quality

By KELUBO from Chicago on February 1, 2018 Music Background: gigging percussionist & vocalist

For years I'd been using (and continue to use) a Mackie 802-VLZ3. But I occasionally found the three XLR inputs of the smaller model to be limiting. The 1402-VLZ4 provides me with enough XLR inputs to mic everything as well as ample line-ins for peripheral electronics. The signal goes to powered Mackie speakers so you may ascertain that I already was a believer in Mackie quality. I wasn't blown away by the excellence of the 1402-VLZ4; I expected it.

Perfect

Nice mixer for my needs.

Mackie 1402VLZ4

By Lester Daffin from Maryland on March 13, 2016 Music Background: retired commercial broadcaster

This is the second 1402 I have. (first one is still working fine) These boards are literally bulletproof! Response, distortion and noise characteristics are excellent. Worked perfectly right out of the box and matches up with my outboard gear and computers with no problems. I would recommend Sweetwater Sound and Mackie gear to anyone looking to add to their audio gear.

Mackie VLZ4 series

By Jon on November 27, 2015 Music Background: Musician and Educator

I've worn two (1202 & 1402) of these out over a 30 year teaching career. I've just purchased my third. Absolutely the best desktop mixer for the money. The full array of I/O features make it extremely flexible and applicable to many situations and the preamps are as quiet as one can expect in this price range. The new 4 has improved dynamic range and things just seem to come alive when coming through this board. I only get this kind of response from my larger and much more expensive boards (Midas) I've tried a few other compact mixers, but am now happily returning to this one for what I know will be great results.

Mackie 1402VLZ4

I love the Mackie stuff. This mixer is the solution I needed for my studio, it's a summing talk back' headphone out put for my entire studio. I think it's great and would recommend it to anyone for a studio or a small mixer for live performance. it is very quiet and lots of routing options. the other nice thing about Mackie is, if you can imagine it you can patch it in to the Mackie and it will work. these are the most versatile mixers bar none.

Solid Build, Good Sound

By Ernest Buckley from Brooklyn, NY on June 19, 2016

I`ve been using the VLZ series for 11 years now, originally I was using the 1402 VLZ3 and then getting the VLZ4 in 2015 after losing the VLZ3 in a flood. I prefer the original buttons and color scheme of the VLZ3. I also prefer the traditional fader design on the VLZ3. However, the board is the same solid build quality and the mic pres are above par, considering your getting 6 pres plus a mixer for this price... its a bargain.

The EQ on the VLZ series are quite good when used minimally. A gentle -/+ 2dbs will be noticeable. The routing and I/Os section of this board is well thought out. This board is used primarily to monitor my external keyboards so its a bit much for my needs but its nice to know I have additional I/Os if need the need arises.

Needs lights!

By WJ from Ohio on August 25, 2023

I have had great experience with Mackie in the past -- 27 years -- and was looking forward to using this smaller version for portable venues. However, it is very difficult to use as there are no lights to indicate "mute" and "solo" as I was accustomed to on the previous board.
