XLR to 1/4" TRS Cables: Premium Sound for Stage and Studio

Balanced XLR to TRS cables are some of the most useful tools in your cable bag. These unsung heroes of the pro audio world are designed to cancel interference during transmission. By doing so, balanced cables are highly resistant to EMI/RFI noise and improve the overall stability of the signal.

How a Balanced XLR to TRS Cable Blocks Interference

How does a TRS to XLR cable achieve this feat? The secret lies in the cable’s balanced construction. A balanced cable, such as an XLR to TRS cable, contains three conductors to pass audio — a positive, a negative, and a ground. When the signal enters the cable, it is duplicated. One signal runs through the positive leg while the other runs through the negative leg in reverse polarity. At the destination device, the two signals are flipped to be in phase with each other again. If any interference occurs during transmission, the interference would be out of phase with itself, effectively removing it from the signal.

Common Uses for TRS to XLR Cables

Not sure if an XLR to TRS cable is right for your setup? Here are some common use-cases we've encountered in our home studios and live sound rigs:

  • Connecting active studio monitors to audio interfaces, mixers, or monitor controllers
  • Sending balanced DI box signals to cable snakes or stage boxes
  • Routing external mic preamps to line-level TRS interface inputs (usually requires XLRF to TRS)
  • Patching outboard rack compressors and EQs in and out of patchbays
  • Plugging dynamic microphones into mic-level 1/4“ preamp inputs (most common on vintage gear, DSLR adapters, and field recorders)

When It Comes to Cables, Invest In Quality (and Carry a Spare)

There are a couple of things you should look for when you’re searching for a TRS to XLR cable. You don’t want your brand-new XLR to TRS Cable to break right away, so make sure you find an XLR to TRS cable with a durable jacket. In the same way, you’ll want to make sure your TRS to XLR has high-quality connectors. A broken connector or damaged XLR to TRS cable is a surefire way to bring your show to a screeching halt. Be sure to have a backup XLR to TRS cable on hand at all times.
