The microKORG vocoder is an 8-band digital processor that analyzes a microphone input (modulator) and applies its characteristics to the internal synthesizer engine (carrier), allowing the keyboard to "talk" or "sing." It features formant holding/shifting, panning, level adjustments, and includes a dedicated gooseneck mic for classic robotic effects.
Key Features & Functionality:
8-Band Vocoder: The original microKORG features a 8-band vocoder that captures and reproduces vocal formants to produce classic, vintage-style robotic and talking synth sounds.
Formant Shift/Hold: Users can shift the filter frequencies (formant shift) to change the voice character (e.g., higher or lower pitch) and use the "Formant Hold" button to freeze a vocal character for continuous use.
Microphone Input: The included gooseneck microphone makes it easy to plug in and immediately use the vocoder. The audio input can also process external audio sources, not just voices.
Synthesis Integration: The vocoder operates by shaping the tonal character of the synthesizer's oscillators, providing a wide range of timbres, from retro to modern, often used in electronic music.
Controls & Presets: The "big funky knob" allows users to select from various vocoder presets, and the top panel provides quick access to adjusting filter bands.
MicroKORG2 Upgrade: The newer microKORG2 features an enhanced vocal processor that includes vocoder, hard-tune pitch correction, and harmony effects.
