1970 Holton H-179 Farkas Fixed Bell Professional Double French Horn with Large Bore, Original Wood Case, Nickel Silver
I got this horn new in 1970 and have owned it ever since. Serial 476755. The H-179 is Holton's flagship model. A new one costs well over 6K.
I've played it in many bands and orchestras. In every case, another hornist in the section would offer to buy this horn. Why? Because it has an extraordinarily rich tone. It plays easily through all registers with consistent intonation.
I babied this horn and always kept it in the case during breaks. It has remarkably few blemishes for its age. It comes in the original wood case with 2 mouthpieces: Holton Farkas MDC and Schilke 27. Both are from the 1970s.
This would be an awesome choice for anyone who appreciates the quality and craftsmanship of horns made during 1970s. It would be excellent for a student, great for a serious hornist heading to college, or a treat for the professional who wants a pro-level instrument with special qualities.
