Prismatic Low-end Power Meets Malleable Musicality

When your 3-decade discography spans a polychromic palette of rap, funk, rock, metal, punk, and even electronic-tinged-prog hues, designing a signature bass to keep up is no small task. But for the low-end force behind Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, 7D7D, and more, Ernie Ball Music Man rose to the challenge with the Tim Commerford Artist Series StingRay Bass. This uncompromising 4-string machine is primed for sonic firepower — available in both active and passive configurations, each loaded with a single, bridge-mounted StingRay Special Neodymium humbucker for searing, mix-cutting tone. For Sweetwater’s gigging bassists, Tim’s performance-first philosophy shines through in thoughtful features like individual string mutes and a height-adjustable finger ramp. Crafted with premium ash, roasted maple, and ebony tonewoods, the Ernie Ball Music Man Tim Commerford Artist Series StingRay Bass delivers a deluge of customizable and kaleidoscopic tone-sculpting tools that roar through any mix. Only one question remains: active or passive?

Active engineering and passive pliability: choose your player

As longtime Ernie Ball Music Man bassists will observe, EBMM and active bass preamps are practically synonymous, which makes the diversity of Tim Commerford's StingRay basses all the more exciting. Both the passive and active models drive your tones via the bridge-mounted Music Man StingRay Special Neodymium humbucker. While this powerhouse pickup conjures immensely high-octane tones, this is where the similarities of sonic circuitry depart. Across the brace of bass styles, myriad performance possibilities are waiting to be discovered, with a spectrum of tone tailoring always on tap.

Passive: The passive control layout includes a volume knob, tone knob, and a 3-way rotary selector, plus a push-push passive volume boost conveniently built into the volume knob. The 3-way selector offers access to series, parallel, and single-coil voicings, delivering raw, organic tones with powerful character and dynamic range.

Built for excellence, designed for dynamism

The tone-shaping possibilities afforded across the active and passive Tim Commerford StingRay basses offer an exciting assemblage of aural exploration. Still, their value is only as important as the instrument’s foundations. Tim and Ernie Ball Music Man’s luthiers spared no effort to compile the optimum tonewood arrangement. An ash body functions as the StingRay’s aural anchor, tethering your tones to laser-focused voicing, strong fundamentals, and resounding resonance, with clean notes largely free of overtones. The roasted maple neck invokes a smoldering full-spectrum brilliance that’s teeming with heat, while the natural note-separating capabilities of maple ensure every string sings with precision. An ebony fretboard completes the bass’s tonewood triumvirate, endowing this signature StingRay with bell-like precision, virtually endless sustain, and a crystalline presence that maintains power without sacrificing precision, punching through every register.

String mutes, an adjustable ramp, and a no-holds-barred bass

Any randomly selected track from Tim Commerford’s diverse discography would yield a smorgasbord of sonic stylings, which is why he partnered with Music Man to ensure his signature StingRay could thrive in every shade of his galvanizing playstyles. The C-shaped roasted maple neck joins the body with a 5-bolt attachment and a meticulously sculpted heel, while the neck is finished with gunstock oil and hand-rubbed with a special wax blend, culminating in a marriage of speed, power, comfort, and control that effortlessly supports virtually every player. What’s more, the use of roasted maple provides a superior dimensional stability, compared to non-roasted varieties of maple, greatly enhancing its resilience to the elements, safeguarding it from twisting and warping.

Music Man-made hardware bookends this StingRay’s 34-inch scale. The tuners include tapered string posts and a clover-shaped design that’s been ergonomically optimized for streamlined tuning. Meanwhile, the string-through-body bridge boasts vintage steel saddles and a hardened-steel bridge plate. These attributes maximize stability and sustain, and the inclusion of a compensated Melamine nut enhances intonation and keeps your sound buzz-free. Above the pickup, you’ll find a Tim Commerford-exclusive finger ramp, custom-built to be fully height adjustable, while the bridge is outfitted with eye-grabbing mute pads, augmenting the aural aperture of your instrument, from all-attack, no-sustain punch to enduringly rich resonance.

Tim Commerford: Rage, Audioslave, Future User, Wakarat, 7D7D, and more

With over three decades of genre-defying bass work, Tim Commerford’s versatility speaks louder than time alone. That same adaptability is baked into the design of his Ernie Ball Music Man Artist Series StingRay Bass, which is built to match his high-powered, shape-shifting style. Tim’s career took off when he joined forces with guitarist Tom Morello, vocalist Zack de la Rocha, and drummer Brad Wilk, forming Rage Against the Machine in 1992. After eight explosive years, the band (minus de la Rocha) teamed up with Chris Cornell to form Audioslave, debuting in 2002 with a powerful post-grunge/metal sound. Following three studio albums with Audioslave and a brief RATM reunion, Tim co-founded the progressive/electronic project Future User, the punk-influenced Wakrat, and 7D7D. He subsequently joined Morello and Wilk in Prophets of Rage, a rap-metal supergroup with Chuck D and B-Real, solidifying his reputation as one of rock’s most innovative and genre-blending bassists.
