API made some sweet improvements on this classic preamp. It’s my favorite of all the rack or 500 series API preamps, but life stuff, gotta sell.
Why is it my favorite? The VU meters are nice and they change color w the signal so they can be read far away. VU metering is a much more natural way to meter because the needle follows a similar scale as human hearing, unlike peak meters. I also love the 3:1 compressor feature cause it really never sounds bad, it lets you pull a lot more range of API tone, and can be used as a compressor during mix time too.
I don’t think I need to speak much about what an API sounds like, but what I have noticed is that SSL and Neve and others have been bought out and pursuing the consumer market / lowering quality, using cheaper components, different circuits etc … API is one of the few classic companies that have been steady like a rock since the beginning. That confidence, I think, makes me a better engineer. A seed of doubt can throw me off sometimes, so I like the reliability and of course the sound.
Anyway, this was bought in late 2024, it has very low hours, you can see there’s no rack screw rash etc. Always kept in AC and humidity controlled room. It has zero issues, never has, and I gave it a solid test thru and checked calibration before listing, tho it did not need any adjustments.
I’m an engineer whos been working for 25 years+, so I know how to respect gear and I baby all my stuff.
I do have the box and materials and the original unused power cable etc. They aren’t photo’d yet. But I’ll update when i grab boxes for all the things i’m selling. Pretty much as minty and fresh of a unit u can get wo buying a brand new one.
Need an XLR or any little extras, just let me know… I’ll toss em in, no charge.
Also happy to talk shop, give advice, help w setup if u need it / tips on getting the most out of ur gear.
I ship insured UPS and usually have it out within 24hrs.
I’m open to reasonable offers (reasonable!) , and I’ll try to accommodate any extra needs as best I can. I have hundreds of transactions on site, gear and audio is pretty much my whole life.
