An HS Telecaster in All But Shape
This Limited-edition Stratocaster HS with Heavy Relic finishing defies traditional Fender conventions for a far more adventurous arrangement of Custom Shop specs. In fact, the only thing “Strat” about this 6-string lies in its comfortably contoured 2-piece ash body and the classic swooping headstock of its quartersawn maple ’66 oval C neck. The rest is pure HS Tele, starting with a Custom Shop hand-wound Telecaster single-coil in the bridge that’s paired with a neck-position Seymour Duncan ’59 humbucker — a pickup configuration that’s nearly as popular as the Tele’s original dual-single setup, as it provides you with both fiery bridge-position twang and warmer, PAF-style depth when you flip up to the neck slot. To really drive this guitar’s Tele inspiration home, the Custom Shop then loaded this guitar up with a string-through-body Tele RSD cutoff bridge, complete with brass compensated saddles for superior intonation accuracy and a mellow attack. What about playability? This Strat/Tele hybrid opts for a thoroughly modern 9.5–12-inch radius atop its AAA rosewood board, complete with 21 vintage-style small frets. Visually distinct, sonically superior, and built to the highest standards by the Fender top luthiers, this Limited-edition Stratocaster HS Heavy Relic stands in a Custom Shop class all its own.
This Tele/Strat hybrid’s HS pickup configuration recreates one of the most time-tested mods among Sweetwater's Tele adherents: a vintage-style humbucker in the neck slot to pair with the bite of the bridge position single-coil. For this Custom Shop creation, Fender started with a Seymour Duncan ’59 in the neck position, which delivers a far broader, fuller, and warmer tone than a traditional Fender single-coil. That said, the bridge slot’s hand-wound single-coil delivers pure Tele twang. Together, this perfect pairing offers everything from deep, jazzy cleans to sneering bridge-position sounds that slice right through any mix.
The Tele—style appointments continue the Custom Shop Limited-edition Stratocaster HS Heavy Relic’s hardware, which consists of a string-through-body Tele RSD Cutoff bridge. Essentially a Telecaster bridge setup without the ashtray foundation, this bridge’s brass saddles bolster this 6-string’s sound and response with the character of Leo Fender’s inaugural solidbody creation. What’s more, the RSD Cutoff bridge features compensated saddles to sharpen up the less-than-perfect intonation accuracy of old-school brass barrel saddles. Complete with a typical T-style 3-way switch and master volume/tone controls, this Strat is sure to feel right at home in the hands of any Tele fanatic.
A brand-new, broken-in classic
There’s a lot to be said about Fender’s intensive relicing process. And for a guitar like this, the relic’d finish gives your axe the travel-worn, broken-in feel you’ve always wanted. The master luthiers in the Fender Custom Shop expertly aged this guitar’s finish to accurately simulate decades of regular use onstage and in the studio. When you take this Strat out of the case for the first time, you’ll feel right at home — almost as if you were the original owner more than seven decades ago.
